So I rooted my tab using odin. I just recently flashed a rom and decided to revert to the backup I made after gaining root. After the backup finished installing I went to install apps such as titanium back up and I get the "unable to gain root permissions" schpeal. Did I lose my root?

Edit: it seems performing a factory reset/wipe removes root. With cwm installed in backups, you can simply re flash root.zip.

Hi.
I'm on .21 rooted version (i've restored root by voodoo root keeper) but without CWM recovery and with locked bootloader.
Now, i want to do a factory reset. Then, can i be able to restore my root by voodoo root keeper??
thanks!
no one?
Factory reset is only a data wipe - there is no spare /system backup which might get restored. You should not loose root.
I rooted my phone a while back and installed CWM recovery. I flashed several Roms successfuly. However when I installed my new ROM( currently omnirom) the supersu app is no longer there. I wanted to try titanium backup but when I installed it, it says I don't have root access. I redownloaded the supersu app and the install keeps failing. So I have a few questions.
1. How did I lose root access to my phone?
2. Can I install custom Roms without root access?
3. What steps should I take to regain root access?
BTW my phone model is galaxy s3 i9300 model.
If you still have access to the recovery you can probably just reflash your ROM and gapps, clean cache and dalvik cage and should be up and running again.

I still have access to CWM but my problem is how to get titanium backup to recognize my phone as having root access.
I got that. If you reflash your ROM and gapps with just deleting cache and dalvik cache and *NOT* data, you won't lose any apps and probably regain root access. Make a backup from within the recovery though. I can't tell you why titanium doesn't make a root prompt appear but this way you will probably fix it
---------- Post added at 01:48 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:47 AM ----------
Also there is possibly an option under development settings where you can choose if apps are granted root privileges. You'll want to check that option.
These are screen shots of what i see when using supersu and titanium backup. I will try your suggestion of reflashing my rom and gapps and see if that helps with anything.

I tried this suggestion and I still don't have root access. Have no idea what else I should do.
Ok I got it to work by manually downloading supersu from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053
and flashing it from my recovery.
I had my phone rooted and successfully got superuser access. From Rom manager, using cwm, i planned to backup my rom as i was intending to flash a custom rom in a few days. When i started the backup, my phone rebooted into cwm and the backup was finished in like 2-3 minutes.
It rebooted again but to the cwm and not android. I cleared cache and dalvik cache. Still rebooting into cwm. I tried restoring from sdcard using my backup of ROM. But it gives a md5 mismatch error. Please help me to figure this out! And access my android. I dont want a new rom. :crying:
Worked it out myself! Thanks!

So I am going to sell my MDK Galaxy S4, currently running Hyperdrive 17.1. I want to keep the unlocked bootloader and root and just have fresh install of HD 17.1 but want to wipe everything off the phone (personal data, etc). Is there an easy way to do this?
Pretty sure there should be an option in which ever recovery you are using for deleting ALL data, including data/media, which is your data. If not, you could just Odin back to MDK and call it a day.

Right, but would doing that delete my ROM, etc, etc? Don't want to brick anything

As long as you don't format /system you will be fine. In TWRP under wipe there's a button that says "format data" which is what you're looking for. Even if you were to accidentally delete your ROM there's Odin.

"format data" wipes the system partition. What I've always done when selling Samsung devices is to use Odin. In your case, use Odin full wipe MDK tar file. Then reroot it (towelroot should work, the MDL prerelease kernel & motochopper are probably not necessary anymore) and use TiBu to freeze SDM, so the phone doesn't OTA update. The only way you can truly get rid of data anyway is to overwrite the physical storage that previously held that data. Just "wiping" only deletes the hooks that find and unscramble the actual data, thus all of that information is still recoverable until overwritten.

Feeling dumb but do you have a link on how to do this?
Format Data- Get into recovery, hit wipe tab, hit format data, type in yes and hit enter.
Use Odin to flash MDK full wipe tar file- Here's a guide on how http://forums.androidcentral.com/sp...08-guide-how-flash-tar-files-odin-3-07-a.html , use this file http://forums.androidcentral.com/sp...08-guide-how-flash-tar-files-odin-3-07-a.html
Root- www.towelroot.com It's the easiest root method I've ever done. Simple apk install. I've never used it on MDK because it wasn't available the last time I had to root this build. Should work though. If it doesn't follow this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2290798
Use TiBu to freeze SDM- Titanium Backup is an app in the play store... Use this guide http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...JC-toJzafMsLe5GMgSdiofQ&bvm=bv.72197243,d.aWw
Now that you understand how to do it, look for SDM and freeze it. It will stop the phone from trying to take an OTA update.
If you want to get a custom recovery back on there, use flashify (app in play store) to flash the latest TWRP image.

Oops here you go: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2289325
I have an International Samsung galaxy S3 (GT0I9300) which is about 2 years old.
I tried rooting it using chainfire's odin installation method. The link I used is this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=33305784&postcount=2.
I followed all the steps correctly. All went fine until the red android came up on my phone. Then after all the process was completed, odin also showed done! But, my phone did not bootup. It is looping in the Samsung logo bootup screen.
I tried all possible methods to turn on the phone, but it still stays in the boot screen itself.
Also my phone is not going to recovery mode when i press <VolUp>+<Home>+<Power button> so that i can wipe cache data, instead it just displays the android recovery logo for a second and reboots again and loops in Samsung logo screen.
I have very valuable data stored in the phone which is not backed up!!
This phone is my daily driver, so I would require some urgent help regarding this...
Please, give me a solution to make my phone work normally as before and also help to root it if possible without any hassle!!
Thank you!

Couple of things you could try (1) flash a stock rom with odin this should restore your phone but you will lose your data (2) flash a custom recovery with Odin either Cwm,PhilZ, or Twrp when finished flashing you can boot into recovery and wipe cache etc.

Thank you for your reply!
Will flashing CWM or any of those custom recovery and wiping the cache help in rebooting normally as before? Because I don't want to get into another trouble. Can you kindly give me a link to it? And how to remove that custom recovery if i wont require it?

Link here please read instructions fully >> http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...covery-clockworkmod-touch-6-0-3-2-gt-t1719744 << Ideally you should wipe cache and data to stop a boot loop (but obviously you don't want to lose any data) so try wiping cache to see if that works. Even though you are stuck in a bootloop the cf auto root flash might have worked so you can try to backup data in recovery and see what happens.
To remove custom recovery you will have to reflash stock rom with Odin and you may have to accept the fact you may lose your data if it won't backup in recovery.

Alright!! Thank you!!
I'll try this method and reply if it is working.
@tallman, I just flashed the clockworkmod recovery and wiped the cache partition.
Then as you mentioned I also tried backing up from backup/restore option.
The cache is wiped properly.
When i tired backing up, i saw two or three lines of message log from CWM and then device just boots up and is stuck at Samsung logo boot screen itself again.
Any other solutions?

@tallman, Thanks for the advise!
Why didn't the root work?? I thought the root worked as CWM requires root permission right?
Is there any other way to just bootup my device without having to flash a new ROM?? What is the reason for the root access to be denied? Can it never be rooted?
PS: Because I don't wanna lose any data. I had about 250-300 apps which I have been using and had saved a lot of info in them.

Yes you can boot to cwm again and wipe data cache etc but like I said all options now involve loosing your data.Plus this is not guaranteed to work depending on what whent wrong with your cf Auto -Root flash. That is why I suggested flashing back to stock with Odin this will return your phone to how it was before it was messed up (minus your data of course).

I'll wipe the data or flash a new rom.
Will stock rom not require root access?
Is flashing a custom Rom same as flashing the stock Rom?
Anyone else have any other suggestion?

Sorry just saw your question about cwm requiring root..No Cwm or any custom recovery does not reqire root, recovery is a separate partition root is acquired through your rom. Technically you can flash a custom recovery and a custom rom without root because root is included in all custom roms. You need root to access system files that is why cwm failed to backup your data because it needs access to your system which it cannot have without root.Stock roms don't have root built in that is why you need to root them to access system files unlike custom roms which like I said have root built in to them

So I guess I'll be flashing a custom rom with kitkat as I'll be losing the data anyways.
All the data in external sd will be intact right?

Yes ext sd will be fine this is where you will need to put your custom Rom anyway to flash it.Please read all the guides in the stickies before you start to make sure you know what you are doing. Also read the stickies about backing up your efs (VERY IMPORTANT) because if you don't back it up then you may have major problems later if you run into problems.

Anyways, I'll wait a few more days and try to figure out a way to restore my existing stock rom to work.
If not there is no other choice left but to flash a new one...
Is there any way to root my phone again and try backing up the data?? Will it work?
Or is there any working recovery software so that i can create an image of the memory?
