Evo 3D seriously over heating... - HTC EVO 3D

Tittle says it all, phone gets extremely hot is this happening to anyone else? Should I go an get a replacement I am still under my 30 day...
Phone gets hot from the bottom of the camera up mostly basically the upper half, everything gets hot- screen, camera even worst on the metal outline around the top

I get this as well. I hadn't noticed it, as my phone has been inside an otterbox case since day one, until this morning when I removed it to clean the screen while it was on the charger. Unfortunately I'm no longer withing the 30 days. I read somewhere that if the temperature gets too high the phone will automatically shut off to prevent from damage, can someone confirm this.

@carlost24, I'd just take it back and get a new one, that's what I did.
Happened to me a few times and each time I noticed it the phone was off, and of course really warm.
I finally took it back after a week because of that and other random freezing and rebooting issues. So far the new one hasn't given me any problems.

happens to me every few days
battery gets super hot, about 50 degrees, using elixir widget readings

I can't confirm that it shuts down, however you will see the led blink red and green until it cools.

I've noticed my phone gets very hot sometimes too, though it is very intermittent - when I had the Shift it happened as well.

Had to take my first one back due to this. It finally got so hot the last time it turned off and wouldn't come back on. I guess it fried the insides. My 2nd one has been fine

Just making sure, with the people having overheating issues, are you running a custom ROM/Kernel? Are you overclocked? Just wanted to make sure.

No problems here.

Yes and yes, however it has been happening since Day 1.

this happen to my if I use Skype video call for more than 10 min... phone shutoff =(

This only tends to happen when your bashing your CPU while on the charger. Very normal due to the fact that your probably not on stock speeds. Especially if your using performance governor, your just asking for a.meltdown. For me playing hi-res games while on the charger tends to shoot my temp through the roof. Try underclocking a little while charging or try to not use a app that requires a lot of CPU to run while charging. Also turning down your brightness and or disabling radios helps a lot also. Just to confirm, while the leds will start to blink green and red, the phone will shut down if it gets to hot for comfort. Most of the time I don't notice my phone being that hot due to the active seidio case. Without a case though I could understand wanting to know the deal on the very very hot feeling temps.

Happened to me and it fried my effin sd card

i havent really felt mine heat up too much. just normal usage heat.
does anyone know what is actually causing this? such as defective batteries or abnormal cpu usage?

Strange because mine only overheats while it charges over night and ONLY when my cameras are facing down. If I flip the phone over no heat issues.
It gets warm if I play a CPU demanding game while on the charger, but my old fascinate did the same thing.

No it is not normal if it is over heating take it back get another one that is what i did and the tech there told me it is a defect on some phones from factory so if anyone is having that issue bring it back my new one is working better than the other

I don't think no one denies the fact that it could be a defective device. Were just here to help him trouble shot before he rushes to the store and start b!tching to the sprint rep about having a screwed up phone.

I saw first hand this happen to my cousins evo3d. I was about to root it until i found out he took the update and now his HBOOT was at 1.5 so i left it on my desk and left the room. When i came back the phone was extremely hot, i then tried to turn it on and nothing. Hurry up and took out the battery and let everything cool down, then plugged it back in and luckily everything booted back up except now it showed that the battery was depleted when it was full. Told him to contact sprint cuz from all that i read, its a known issue and they will replace it. Hopefully he gets a new one w/o the 1.5 HBOOT since he didnt want to go through HTCDEV.com

i have noticed it only when i use the 3g radio for video or anything that continually pulls data, if i stream the same video on wifi the phone stays cool.

This happened to me last night for the first time.
I had it plugged in it had been plugged in for about 3 hours. I was sleeping and I woke up to the phone beeping and LED blinking red and green.
Batterylife widget said "overheat". The battery was only at 34 percent and it was higher than that when I plugged it in.
My first instinct was unplug and pull out the battery. The phone was scalding hot! I took my TPU case off and the case was so hot that it was almost as flexible as a silicone case. The screen glass was so hot I could barely touch it. Surprisingly, the battery itself was not that hot, the phone was significantly hotter.
I left the phone unplugged and battery out for about 2 hours.
Everything seems ok, but IDK what the hell happened.
BTW, my phone is bone stock, not even rooted.

Phone will not turn on

Yesterday, I was at the beach, phone was fine, later i go into the bag of things I brought out to check my shiny new Evo 3D, only to find it turned off, and I haven't been able to get a thing working all day, won't come on, wont give me a startup vibrate, screen flash, charge light, or anything. No water damage either I've checked the water indicator and nothing is different. Any ideas on how to get it back up and running.
Also, my girlfriends OG Evo will come on, but no screen, screen will not show anything even though capacitive buttons glow a normal, no water damage on her phone either.
Yes I posted this yesterday but under a weird title
Yes I have battery pulled
Yes I have tried a new SD card, and completely removing the SD
Don't know what else to try
Please help
Maybe the sun borked something in the units. I don't know if you left it baking in the sun but I know that leaving it in direct sunlight for prolonged period of time can wreak major havoc on LCD screens.
When you plug in the device you do you at least get a charge light indicator?
I'd suggest cooling down the device but since you said this was yesterday I don't see how this could help you.
Battery pull, fan cool down, wait an hour, reassemble and try again.

The sun could of baked your phones both of them depending on how hot it was at the beach . I know the sun will **** up a lcd screen. Since your both having issues im guessing it was from the sun so I would take it to sprint and get it checked out .

I went to a sprint store today, they cant touch it until 30 days, I'm not sure how it could have gotten so overheated, It was left in the bottom of the bag, and everything else down there was fairly cool, i tried cooling it over the ac though.
And no, no charge light at all
question
How many days have you had it... Seems like a defective phone from the get go to me. I would be pissed if I bought a new phone and it died in 2 days. Return the phone and don't take no for an answer!!! They should give you another one.

I agree. Take the 3vo back demand an exchange. Take the evo back separately (maybe different store altogether) and have the tech fix it or do the insurance deal.

Hey I am having the same Problem (diff circumstances, not beach temps I am in Chicago) I was at my friends apt tonight showing off the EVO 3D when the screen just went black! The phone said it had over 70% battery remaining. It has been about 3 hours since and the phone will not turn back on. I have taken out the battery plugged in power and done it all backwards too. I don't know what to do right now. I got this phone TODAY!!!

Did you do the OTA update ? Isn't there a hard reset ? I haven't messed with the OTA yet. Got my phone today from sprint online. Anyways I know the HTC touch pro 2 had a SLEEP issue it was called the SOD screen of death phone would turn screen off and you couldnt get it to wake up at all. You had to pull battery multiple times to get the sucker to work.

I have been trying to hard reset my device all night now! I have been trying this method: google search EVO 3D hard reset and its the first link... basicly it says hold down your vol down button then hold the power button but nothing happens for me.
but to no avail! I have tried taking the batt out multiple times and press the power button. I have tried keeping the batt out with the power cord plugged in. nothing is working!

they just dont wanna becuz they might have to swap you and theres no referbs yet so they would have to give a new one and dont want to cuz they would rather sell it
so they have to take a look at it call CS 1800 theyll walk you threw all the stuff you tried (that didnt work) once its doesnt work with their help thell issue you a repair ticket and then the store will have to look at
Efff that...RETURN both phones as defective.
my evoG had 3 returns before i was happy.
Today my 3d decided to turn off and not turn back on after selecting an application. had to pull the battery to get it back up again..
HW002.. I will be taking mine back in .. seems enough people are having the device just shutdown on them for no good reason.
Remove the sdcard then try and boot the phone.
I ordered it online on the 21st, So what I really want to know, is if i take it to a corporate store with the box and all items that came with it, will they allow me to swap it there, or will I have to call CS and have them send a replacement?

Droid RAZR Overheating Issues

I purchased a Droid RAZR on the day it was released and it has been running just fine. As of right now I am satisfied but I ran into something that worried me slightly.
Earlier today I had my phone in the Kickstand case/belt clip and hadn't used it for about an hour. When I took the phone out of the belt clip it was scolding hot. Battery, screen, all of it. I regretfully didn't have something to monitor the temperature to check what it had gotten to, but it was nearing pain just to hold.
Has anyone else been running into overheating problems with their RAZR of this magnitude or does anyone know any cause/solutions? Any input would be appreciated.
Sounds like you had 4g turned on and a lot of activity going on
also sounds like it got hot, i did not "overheat".
My razr gets warm in the case too... Does your case have a magnetic closer thing? Mine does and I am wondering if that is playing a part as I know old motorola droids (Droid 1 ) would not play nice with magnetic cases.
Mine has never been got hot. Not even warm...
But I've heard that many of you are experiencing problems like this so, maybe, it's my device the exception.
P.S.: Always running in HSPA+ with data connected. It got a little warm after 30 minutes of playing on WebTop (on my ATRIX LapDock)
I noticed this today. Went without my otterbox on an after 10 min of listening to pandora the thing was almost to hot to touch. Going to exchange this.

And there were not a lot of activities going on. Up until that point I had made a phone call. That was it. And I checked to see what was active and there wasnt aanything that shouldn't have been.

Mine is XT910 and it is kinda cold even after surfing HSPDA+ for 15mins. The 4G LTE radio in the XT912 aka Droid Razr should be the cause of this issue. I believe they'll roll maintenance updates soon enough to fix this kind of baseband issues.
My device too has been getting hot. I have the Droid Razr. It will overheat with no case, weather i am streaming in 4g or not. constantly losing 4g connection. also once it is over heating it will begin to powercycle. I have also noticed now due to the over heating the kevlar backing now has a huge air bubble underneath it where it has come detached. you can run your finger across hte bottom and just hear the popping sound of it moving around.
Check in Display Settings if In-Pocket detection is ticked. You never know. It is an active process if ticked.
For the past couple days I've noticed when I am in bed I've been using my fiance's EVO 3D charger and it's been heating up the screen pretty good, hot enough to really feel it on your palm of hand, not warm, i'm talking hot. I unplug it, shut it down and within minutes it's cool again.
is this an LTE phone?
I noticed the phone get hot (noticeably hotter than expected) the first day of use when I was hammering LTE and opening/closing things. I didn't use LTE a lot after that. I used the (google) navigator app in the car for a good 11 hours straight and it barely got warm but using 3g.
Since then, I've installed the leaked update which contains a new radio and updates the os to 2.3.6. I've been running 4G and It hasn't been anywhere close to hot. It might get SLIGHTLY warm while downloading/watching some youtube vids but it seems much improved.
No such issues with mine. Scolding hot? You sure you are not exaggerating a little?

Just how 'high' do you think the voltage is on the battery? I have used various chargers and they all work fine.
I had to echange my Razr after 2 weeks because the camera kept freezing but 4-5 times I would feel my pocket get hot. It was very hot and would partially drain the battery quick. Only have 3G in my area. I would reboot it and it would cool down. The new Razr has always stayed cool.
I've had similar problems in the past with my phone randomly becoming extremely hot and the battery dying within a few hours. I eventually downloaded an app called Android System Info on the market. It will tell you exactly what processes are running and how much of the CPU they are using. I found out that a process named android.process.media was starting and hogging 70% or more of my CPU at random intervals. After some research I figured out this was possibly caused by my phone attempting to sync with the media on my micro SD card and failing, but continuously retrying.

Disregard that message as it is ridiculous.
If the Razr couldn't be used with a standard micro-usb charger then they would have put a proprietary charger port on it. And secondly, even the cheapest plug-in charger has far more juice than what a laptop USB port provides.
When I first received my RAZR, it too became very, very hot at times. Uncomfortably hot. To the point where I feared for internal components. On the plus side, some of those 'black blotches' under the screen seemed to disappear.
As above, narrowed it down to the media scanner. Solution was initially to use the phone without an SD card, but that was hardly a long term fix. In the end, I rooted, froze the terrible Blur music app, hid as many folders as possible with .nomedia files, and used the feature of PowerAMP that disables the system media scanner for its database.
Have not had the same problem on 2.3.6 firmware, thankfully.

Phone got extremely hot last night

So the past couple of nights I have been using sleep as android to track my sleep patterns. Worked well every night until last. I waited for the screen to turn off than put half the phone under my pillow to keep it from falling off the bed. This morning I went to go turn off the App and my phone was burning hot. It was showing a black screen. I could not even hold the phone in my hand it was so hot. I have auto screen off enabled for 1 minute.
I waited about 20 mins and the phone finally booted up., it would just display the LG logo real quick and sit at black screen Untill it cooled off.
My questions are is this because it was under my pillow charging? I know this phone has a temp sensor, but can't find a temp sensor that work's. I know this because if I have the screen at full brightness after a while playing a game the screen will dim, ill go into settings and try to bump it up and it says temp to high please try again later. So I know this phone has some sort of safe guards. How come my phone was burning hot, shouldn't it have turned itself off. Also can this happen even not being under my pillow? Im nervous about leaving my phone chargeing when I sleep for fear its going to burst into flames lol.
Just curious if anyone has ever had this phone get so hot you could not hold it? Phone seems to be working fine, is there away to make sure this phone never gets that hot again?

Best guess is, yes. Don't put your phone under your pillow. The beat has nowhere to go basically it just keeps around the phone.

Check your battery, it may be three cause for this problem. The battery is what heats up the phone the most, if it is leaking, or damaged in any way then it can cause this
Also try cleaning any vents on your phone, they may be clogged, not allowing dissipation of heat
Alternatively, check which kernel and cpu governor you are using, if it is terribly inefficient it can be causing the cpu to stay at high frequencies, which can cause it to increase its TDP footprint

If I helped you, please hit the thanks button!
How would I check my battery on the og since it's internal. Vents were probably blocked since it was under a pillow. Phone is brand new running nocturnal and sk8ters kernel with set cpu governor on on-demand.

I have to be honest with you guys. The only time my phone gets hot is when I play intense games or download a 200+ MB file. Other than that it's always cool, and I'm using a case.
Don't leave your phone under a pillow, turn it off when you can, try and use darker colors/lower the screen brightness as much as possible, and give it a break every so often...

You could check the battery by sending it to lg, or check for any sort of liquid seeping from the phone. As for the governor, try setting it to a more conservative setting, on demand can result in it pulling max resources all the time and this can cause the heating. Apart from that, don't keep it under a pillow, in a leather case, or in tight jeans. Keeping it in the sun in a car can also be problematic

Mine got super hot when I first got it. It would do it randomly on occasion, but normally in recovery, however over time (and after flashing updated recoveries) I've been noticing less and less of a problem. Using sk8's kernel also seemed to help.

Have had same problem w- sleep as android app also
At first I thought it was from being under the pillow as well. So I made sure not to put it there the next night, but had it on the bed. It still got pretty hot, just not as hot.
Next, I let the app run all night next to me on the nightstand and it still got pretty warm, but then you don't reliable stats. I then made sure the app was off for a couple of nights and the phone was at a normal temp in the mornings.
There is definitely something different with my phone when running this particular app.

Overheating then Brick

Today my stock phone with JB overheated. I got a message on the screen that said the phone was shutting down for my protection. I was in the process of installing apps from the Play store. Six hours later it will still not turn back on. My battery was around 25% or so.
If it is not plugged in then no combination of button presses will produce any result.
If it is plugged in then it boots to the first logo flash and then reboots.
If it is plugged in and I boot to download mode then it flashes the download mode screen and reboots.
If it is plugged in and I hold down the power button then the power button flashes rapidly.
I left off for a couple hours and then plugged it in for a couple hours just in case it did need to charge, but it did not produce any change in results.
I am fairly certain that the fix described in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2039707 will work. I can also just return my phone since it is only one day old.
However it looks like there might be a fair number of people having this issue so I would like to look into preventative measures so that it does not have to happen. Other than not using the phone if it starts to get hot, does anyone have any ideas of where to check? Are there any files that can be changed to help the phone not get stuck in the pre-boot phase? I know we can change the temp that the phone shuts down at, but given that my phone actually was pretty hot I doubt that is a good solution.
Get a new phone and immediately turn on eco mode. My phone has never gotten hot during heavy usage and you won't notice any difference performance wise. You may notice better battery life, although, I haven't seen much improvement.

That is what I did with my first phone (I have two). I didn't on this phone because I wanted to see if there was any performance difference I could notice. It didn't seem any faster, but I only got to use it about 45 minutes before it overheated.
I will most likely return it, but I really do want to see what I can do to help out the people that won't have that option. I like fixing things so it is a hard choice.

This one. I sat and stared at my screen for 15 minutes trying to decide the best and shortest way to word that. I guess I failed.
I ended up returning my phone. I turned on Eco mode as soon as I could as was suggested. I noticed my phone was starting to get just as hot as before so I double checked and Eco mode had turned off. I am keeping an eye on it, but I have still had it get pretty hot a couple times. Mostly when I am downloading a lot and have the screen on. I'm staying safe by not using it for long periods of time, but that is going to get old pretty quick )= If it is a bad batch thing I suppose it would make sense that this one is bad too since I got it from the same store just two days apart.
I scared to see what is going to happen when I use LTE for the first time tomorrow lol.
My first LGOG did this. Within a week of purchase.

How hot are we talking here for it to over heat. I've been up to 71°c on the CPU and 46°c on the battery. It felt really hot to the touch. But it continued to work.

I posted a mod in the dev section that should resolve this issue. Just choose optimized stock for a regular experience that'll appropriately throttle to maintain a reasonable temp.

[Q] Anyone want to take a stab at explaining what happened to my OG?

Ok so basically heres what happened. I download the app sleepybot onto my phone. (Can't link I'm new, its called sleepybot)
Last night I turn it on, it dims the screen down super low, I tell it to wake me up between 7:30 and 8:30, put it under my pillow charging and go to sleep. This morning I wake up, go to check the time and almost burn my hand because my OG is F'CKING HOT! I'm not exaggerating, it was hot on every surface to the point where I had to play hot potato with it, no joke. I'm drinking hot coffee while writing this, and it was as hot as the cup I'm holding, front and back as well as all four sides. HOT. I immediately unplugged it and tried to slowly cool it down by blowing on it (I didn't want to cool it to fast and crack the glass). After about ten minutes, I start trying to turn it on. -LG Logo, followed by black screen-. Over the course of the next hour I plug it in, put it on top of a fan to keep it cool, and try and let it charge up. Nothing but the LG Logo then black. No fastboot, recovery, or anything, but download mode still works.
So I go online and start messing around reading, notice that it seems like I've got a softbrick on my hands. Download that EZBin software with the LG stuff, put it into download, and after failing with the first EZBin I successfully booted straight back into my normal software using the EZBin(ALT). Phone is currently charging, running completely normally, and most importantly no longer going super nova.
Everything seems back to normal which I'm happy about, just curious if anyone knows A- Why my phone overheated to such a degree (Like seriously it was I'd guess around 180F) and B- Why my phone essentially soft bricked itself afterwards. I'm on stock ATT JB, rooted with a custom kernel, OC'ed to 1.7Ghz but UV'ed and its not on the performance governor so it downclocks down to 192Mhz.
TLDR: Leave phone charging overnight, wake up with it ridiculously hot and soft bricked. Use awesome LG Dev software to unbrick it. Confused as to wtf happened.

Wild ass guess. Some app kept the device wake locked at max clock. Max clock plus charging plus no air flow under pillow (best way to kill a phone is charging it under your pillow... Don't do it) = pocket inferno. Wouldn't boot due to over-temp protection working...

The over temp protection would stay kicked in even well after the phone has returned to a normal operating temp?

How did you determine "normal" temp? Exterior touch? Internal temp might still be high? Or maybe there is a built in delay? Like I said... Wild ass guess.

I angled a fan upwards and let the OG sit on it for about half an hour. It was cool to touch, not the slightest bit warm. I can see the overheat protection keeping it from booting, but it stayed 'soft bricked' for about an hour and a half after the incident, well over an hour after it had cooled. I'm sure I won't get a concrete answer which is fine, I was just curious to see if anybody knew more or had had something similar happen.
Which kernel are you running?
My phone gets warm while charging. If you were in fact charging it under a pillow, then it would cook the phone as mentioned above. Once the temp hits a certain point, the CPU will crash, causing a reboot, or sleep of death. Its not impossible that the CPU crash corrupted vital data, or a partition table. I'd say that's most likely what happened.

Moral of the story.. Don't do that again
