Hello guys, I wanna ask if anyone uses swap and understand whether it's suitable for use. I'm trying out swap right now but can't really see any difference.
Does anyone know what application can see what processes were swapped out or in?
http://zerocredibility.wordpress.com/2009/08/24/why-android-swap-doesnt-make-sense/
I have read that, thank you. I use swap just in case I'm multitasking too much, you see. But apparently not many users are using swap around here.

Well , I can't help in swap but I can help in Multi-tasking .
V6 SuperCharger's Multitasking settings helped me alot .
Now I can use Dolphin Browser HD and 4 other tasks each time (except Music , it delays )
Swap may be useful if you're using a Class 10 SD and you're running a lot of apps/tabs with a lot going on but I wouldn't bother myself.

Hey,
are u using a script with modified swap/vm values?
Care to try one out?
Cheers
You were using the first flash rom then? I mean, when the music got lag?
I'm using coderom with v6 in agressive 1. This is amazing, ahaha I had at least 6 apps opens with music, and everything just fine.
Thumbs up for v6 !! ahaha
About swap, I dont really know if it works, all comes about how you use your phone (i guess) since the values of swapinnes you can give to it.
I have swap on, but dont notice any difference. I dont remove it because.. why would I do that? ahah maybe someday It will be useful . I have swapinnes at 60 btw.
Cheers

i used swap.. set it to 0 so it only swaps when needed. using a kingston class 4 16gb i can say it slowed down my system, vey noticable that it's becoming very laggy.. so i uninstalled it and just let them ram scripts manage the RAM

Zero shouldn't be using any swap at all.. the recommended is 10 and it does get used for me sometimes.

Ok so i have 3 questions in 1 thread!
I have a X10 mini pro 2.1 (U20i):
1- Has anyone "currentwidget" working on this phone?!
I installed it and the widget shows always Error (i have root access).
Any help is appreciated!
2- How to maximize battery consumption!?! It's barely holding 15hrs of minimal use!!! Wiped the battstats and didn't have so much improvement!
Any help is appreciated!
3- I need arabic support for the phone! Does somebody have it working?!? Where can i find libs, frameworks...?!
Any help is appreciated!
Thanks

I'm guessing like the other 50+ viewers they didn't know what you were asking until they actually viewed your post. Consumption, Battery, Arabic doesn't give much away. For all we know, you could have been asking about memory usage, buying a new battery, and an arabic font pack!

Ok, this is the solution to about half of your problems .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/announcement.php?f=263#td_post_81
And let's see if I can answer those questions!
1. It does not work, at least the one in the market... It's for the nexus one, there is a ported version for the vibrant too, but I'm not sure if it will work either. Anyway, it's a bit of a stupid program, go buy System Panel.
2. It is more about running proceses than anything. Best app you could download to see what is running wildly, System Panel (and yes, pay for it), or just take some other task killer, like Advanced Task Killer, and see what runs without you wanting too. You should uninstall that crap. Start with Timescape. That app is truly pure crap.
Ah, also, put the widget Power Control (which come included) and try to keep everything deactivated as long as you can. Each of those things SWALLOW battery, more than eat. Put APNdroid, and keep internet deactivated too. Download Setcpu (it's free in this forum) and put the minimum Hz to 128 (the minimum you can put).
What else... eliminate all the SE **** you can and whenever you are not using the phone, kill all the running apps with Advanced Task Killer. Or you can use Autokiller, didn't work for me.
Put a battery percentage icon too. You will notice when something is eating your battery with it. If you don't want a theme, use Battery Indicator.
3. Sorry, don't know what the hell I could use that for. Open a thread for this.
EDIT: looked att your profiel, and man, you are no noob, why the hell are you asking how to improve your battery? It is a standard, androids consume if you let them, nothing else. If you really need battery, underclock it with setcpu and problem solved.

First of all thanks for your reply!
About current consumption I'll try also "battery monitor widget" to see if it works!
Man i asked those bcz i'm not a perfect noob (we all are noobs at some point); i'm concentrating my efforts on my HD2 and i dont have so much time for this X10 minipro; so i asked bcz maybe there is some kind of a trick or a known bud/problem that may decrease battery consumption!
About downclocking, my own experience (and many others) shows that it doesn't affect battery much (barely 5 to 10% so it's not worth it) and besides it introduces instabilities so i prefer not to tweak anything about CPU.
However i thank for re-introducing the autokiller memory to my mind bcz i completely forgot it although i'm using it on my HD2!!! hahaha
Oh, no problem then, dude ^^ mm downclocking does work for me, i believe :/ anyway, the best memory optimizer is autokiller, trust me in that see you around!!

To me the name this thread looked as if you´ve found a piece of software which solves these three problems.
Just to address your battery problem - no there is no solution unless you cut off data transmission or use GPRS instead of 3G. 15 hours is decent time.
Can´t say anything about Arabic, though.

But sometimes when you need answers you need good ways to ask the questions!
My battery lasted many hours longer after disabling data traffic. I only enable data traffic when needed then immediately disable it again. There's a built in widget to enable/disable data traffic.

For the short time that I was running oxide vs Eclipse in antutu I noticed huge differences in the SD speeds. For Eclipse SD write 6.1 and Read of 7.1 (not sure if antutu is benching internal or external now) Oxide I was getting write speeds of 19 and read 22. SD speed increase doesn't seem to do much, that or it only affects the internal speed perhaps? Is there anything that I can add to the build.prop or any flashable file that would truly increase the speed? I did see in the changelog credits were given to navendrob for sd speed increase. Any suggestions? Thank you.

Curious if this tweak does anything for performance as in will my apps load faster and run smoother? Or is it really just for copying and moving files? Not that my apps take long to load mist of the time.

Thanks. I just checked twice. First time read was 15 second was 17.
Also one more quest I forgot. Is this tweaking the internal or external sd? When I try to choose which sd to test in antutu it has /sdcard and then the bunch of /usb ones that I see in script manager at /mnt. So im wondering if moving my app to media area un application management is putting the app on my external or just a special spot on the internal. They really made this sd card crap confusing Hahaha it could have been a lot mire simpler
And also is there a way to check ny external sd speed if this IS my internal.
And do I need an app2sd app from market to actually put my apps that support that on the external if moving to media area is just a special internal space?
And thanks again for ya help mike.

Do you have any scripts running?
Have you tried making superuser forget sdboost and then allow It again.
Just trying for the simple first.
do u have the sdflip hack to switch which sd cards your phone recognized where?
Any specific tweaks you have going on?
I am also ob eclipse rom but ver.2.1 not the newest since I didn't have any problems on it and that's all the new version fixed was accounts and camera.
Also I see navendrob has the sd increase included in the init.d hack (BSR flashable) I just haven't tried it yet because I am running scripts and have my phone set to what I want right now. That would be the only tweak I wanna try at least tonight. Im hoping to try and get it separate from the others somehow.
Don't know if you want to try that out and just delete sdboost app if it works.
I am curious if oxide had the tweak that switches how your phone views the sd cards.

Thanks for all your responses. I am curious as well if that's what Oxide does, cause I got GREAT speeds on my SD. Another thing of interest on nenamark on oxide i got like 54-56 fps vs 46-47 on Eclipse. But after a reboot on Oxide the frames drop back down to 46-47 on nenamark. However as per the SD speeds they are quite good. I tried the SD program first, then the init hack as well. Both have same results, but slight increases. I also installed the blurbuild prop zip as well. Hmm..

Yeah I did the build.prop zip earlier and on top of that I run v6 update 9to with megaram2 setting with oom grouping fix and htk launcher. Also have safer KAK running also and my phone is runnin really nice right now. I will be tweaking some of it here and there. I haven't tried oxide yet. I have it downloaded just haven't wanted to switch yet.
Probly will try it at some point after a nandroid and all but am busy with other things for now.
Which sd program ar u talking about? The one that switch recognition?
I found that the build prop edit alone from navendrob made my.music skips return until I ran v6 with it. It did make my phone pretty snappy but I find it even better complimented with v6.
Its like good beer and cheese. It just goes together

I see a whole lot of bloatware that should be removed and will free up RAM.
high ram usage but almost no lag.
@Claytop: you should remove some bloatware. Free ram will be ok. This why I wish S3 has 1.3-1.5GB of Ram!

As this is my first Samsung product I am not sure what it bloatware and what is needed!
Surely it just has the same things installed as every other?
And as for effecting performance, the interface does seem slightly laggier then when i first opened it up yesterday, it just seems to have started today
I assume you're a windows user?
If this isn't affecting the performance of your phone when the device is doing exactly what it should, it's using the ram instead of wasting it.

You dont have to reboot so often but sometimes it stops all the apps running on the backround
I will see how it goes..
Just one other thing, I have noticed that on my battery info page, i have used 67% of my battery with the screen being the main hog(understandably) with 48% but Cell Standby is running at 37%
Is that a normal figure you would expect to see or is it too high?
Just what it says. I've had my Galaxy S3 for 4 days and I've noticed that I only ever have about 100mbs (out of 800) free on my phone at any one time.
On my SGS2 I have over 300mb even with many games/apps running.
Sure my SGS3 is far faster than my SGS2 but when it comes to Web surfing and watching flash videos on pages, as well as just browsing around the home screen sometimes the phone gets so low on memory that it just starts to randomly kill apps that I have open. Apps like: Avast (which I don't use for the Anti-virus but for the extensive Anti-theft protection), Viber - which I use for making and receiving VoIP calls and Tasker. Which I use for automating things.
Surely a phone like this needs RAM I'm sure. But leaving me with just 100mbs spare for everything else can't be right can it?
I don't have many things running. Just the normal stuff. The main point is that my SGS2 could easily handle all this.
Anyone else having the same problem? Is there anything I can do? I use the Opera Mobile (not lite) browser.
I'd be happy to provide more information if needed. I'm pretty gutted over this. Battery life is lovely but the phone's performance grinds to a total halt when it clears its RAM... Which I never did manually on my SGS2 because it drains battery when it caches everything instantly again anyway.
Thanks so much in advance.
P.S. I can't find a 'task manager' app anywhere. I know if hold down the home button that I can access the task manager by pressing 'task manager' but that doesn't show me anything useful like what the SGS2 does. I can't exit apps or see how much RAM and CPU they are using or anything. Does the SGS3 really not have this option??
Touchwiz for s3 is heavy! Normally you shouldn't worry about ram on Android but touchwiz is really little much... I would recommend cm9 maybe.. Lightweight and fast

Hey thanks a lot for your reply!
I will never be flashing a custom Rom over this phone. I like it the way that it is. I'm using Nova Launcher not TwLauncher.
Surely touchwiz can't be that big of a RAM hog. I have 4.0.3 on my SGS2 how can 4.0.4 be so much worse?
Edit: Obviously free RAM is wasted RAM but did you even read my post at all??? My phone keeps running out of RAM and killing apps, then reloading them instantly which slows down my phone to a halt and excessively drains my battery...
Ram handling is clearly flawed in SGS 3, lets hope the is no HW bug.
Hopefully future updates will fix the leaking memory.
Does people think that android is windows, or why someone allways complain about low ram? People, please learn how android ram management really works.

What are you even doing here? I'm running custom rom and the killing of apps is gone.
To those people spamming about "free ram is wasted ram" that is true BUT samsung set their priorities wrong to start killing apps you use, since touchwiz is pretty big it kills the apps you need instead. On cm9 the ram can be used for cache for stuff you actually need and use. This dude having issues with multitasking due to bad priorities wich is solved by mods / custom roms.. If you not are willing to try that I have no clue why you ask in xda for help.

Maybe free ram in android is wasted ram, but only if the ram is used for USEFUL apps. Samsung have made a lot of stupid apps run in the background at all time, like softwareupdate, Chaton, some clud service process, AllShare Service, and a lot more (google maps also run at any given time, eating 30 mb of ram). All of this apps run in the background and take up a lot of ram, even tho I NEVER use this apps. All of these running apps, prevent the apps that I USE from being kept in the ram, and thus leads to a longer load time (f.x. Handcent SMS take a sec or 2 to load if it is not already loaded in the ram). What I did was to download Autostarts from the market and prevent these apps from starting up by themself, and thus I made room for the apps I use to be kept in the ram. However, be carefull, disabling apps from starting up (especially system apps), can cause problems!

If someone has 300MB free ram and is asking about freeing up more ram this makes sense.
If free ram is always <100mb then there's a memory management problem.
OP try disabling unused apps in the app manager, streamline startup apps and use gemini to turn off auto launching of unneeded apps.
On stock I used to have about 150-200MB free ram at boot. With CM9 and 10 i get 300-400MB free RAM at boot.

Just freeze all of the bloatware. Install a good custom kernel (eg Siyah) and move on! No one to blame but yourself for not doing that or wanting to.
Android is doing its job just fine with memory. It's just bogged down by Samsung and vendor crapware.
Be lucky you ain't in the US, DHS big brother software becoming mandatory soon lol

I can see that from just normal use. If any webpage is open with any sort of flash container my SGS3 just starts killing background apps and throwing "Low RAM" errors. I wonder if Jelly Bean will fix this issue?

Excuse me but not everyone who asks questions in the XDA forums are idiots. I don't know what's with the attitude here of everyone with a couple of hundred posts but I'm not impressed. Knowing how RAM management works has NOTHING to do with this thread. The complaint in question here is that my phone is constantly running out of RAM and when it does it starts to kill background apps to free RAM which in turn grinds my phone down to a halt, and drains the battery excessively. Are you just here to get your post count up or something?

UGHHHH!!! READ WHOLE DAMN POST! NOT JUST THE THREAD LINE.. I don't care about if my phone has 3MB of RAM free all the time or not as long as it works without a hitch, what I care about is that my phone is killing background apps that I need open and then constantly reloading them over and over when I'm web browsing and sometimes when I'm just at the home-screen.

XDA isn't just about modding/using custom roms etc. There are multiple sections on the forums here for discussion about other topics. Including asking general questions about the device... I use ROMs on my other phones where I can because I love them and I don't mind the constant updating I have to do. But on this phone, I don't want to use partially-unstable roms that require me to constantly flash my phone over and over again just to get features that are already working fine in the general release version. There is no guarantee that this problem will be fixed in a rom anyway and some of us don't like breaking our warranty. Even if it's child's-play to return the phone back to stock settings and renew the warranty.

I've frozen all of these... 'Talkback, OTA Updates, Bluetooth (I never use it) as well as turned off NFC and a bunch of other things etc. etc. etc. I don't have that much running in the background but my phone still bounces between 330MBs (after killing everything) of free RAM and under >90. (2 mins later after everything has reloaded) To which it then starts throwing warnings and killing apps I need.

^This. THANKYOU! Finally someone who didn't just read the tagline and post stupid retorts like "This isn't Windows" etc. I thought I was being plenty clear enough when I stated that the problem I was talking about was the fact that the phone goes from blisteringly fast, to painstakingly slow whilst browsing.
Disabling ALL addons (Javascript, Flash etc). from running while browsing stops this from happening 99.9% of the time. I also removed Tasker, much to my displeasure and froze a few more apps and it seems to happen less now but I'm still hovering around the 'workable' part of my phone. Which makes me feel a bit displeased because I didn't buy a phone to be limited by what I can do with it...

Thanks for being another jackass who posts unhelpful crap in threads without actually reading them at all. You might think you're doing people a favor but you're not, and if that's how you roll, then forums aren't the place for you.

It's hard to freeze bloatware when you have a bunch of people posting in forums that they don't know half of what the apps on the SGS3 do and if they are safe to freeze or not. I've done some searches but it seems that most people are generally confused about what is safe or not to freeze. Same thing happened with the SGS2. When I got it I googled (and found this place) what I could freeze and found people nitpicking over what they should, and shouldn't freeze. I have frozen everything that I've found is safe to, from multiple threads on the forums here.
I'll go and read a thread though as to why it's a good idea to flash a new kernel. I'd rather not have any restrictions as it is anyway, so that will be my next step, thanks!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thanks a ton to anyone who gave me the time of day and didn't just slam up some copypaste drama that has nothing to do with this thread. Free RAM is wasted RAM but when there isn't enough free RAM that background apps start getting killed (and usually instantly reloaded) then it goes without saying phone gets slower, battery drains faster, performance loss etc.
Excuse my retarded attitude but this isn't even the 10th time here I've had to dodge people who just post crap without even reading anything, and then just move on and do the same thing over and over.
I'm going to flash a new kernel, cross my fingers and freeze a few more apps, turn plug-ins to 'on demand' and cross my fingers again.
Thanks again to everyone who really helped and peace. I added thanks to you guys.

yeah. stop think like windows (even though windows 7 ram management is good). andoid load it's system/app in ram to provide faster response. but once you need it more, it will clear unused app to free more ram..not to worry about that..

The problem begins when it start killing apps you are using instead of killing those bloated apps.

Are you rooted?
If yes:
1 freeze all the bloatware
2 install v6supercharger and set lowmemorykiller values as low as possible
3 install hardswap script
4 you are done...
Now, make your own search, it is all in xda.
I gave you the hint, Nov it is up to you

What's it do?
It makes your phone FAST... super snappy with better multitasking!
It rearranges and fixes the OOM Groupings and Priorites and lowmemorykiller values.
So basically, it's a COMPLETE MEMORY MANAGEMENT FIX!
It's the ONLY one of it's kind
NO LAUNCHER REDRAWS, faster than ever, multitasking is better... why?
Because it works with the lowmemorykiller and letting it work the way it's meant to work.
Also, because of the rearrangement, it works the same on all roms!
The problem with using minfree tweakers like AMM or AKMO is that it doesn't work the same on all roms.
Secondary apps may be in slot 3 on some roms but in slot 5 in others!
That's why you hear people comment "I tried AKMO but it didn't do anything..."
Most likely it didn't do anything because the apps weren't sitting where they were expected to be.
So fasten your seat belts and enjoy the ride!
