[Q] SMS commands -> action(s) - Galaxy Ace S5830 General

There are apps like kaspersky and Lost phone (+some other) who are able to wipe/lock/locate your phone using a simple sms command.
eg. "QNBTlockphone" which should trigger my phone to be locked by the app. But none of the apps ive tried worked. I checked the comments on the android market, they reported that the app works fine.
So did you ever try these kind of apps? Did they work? If yes, what ROM are you running?
If you wanna try it out:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.gadgetprojects.lostphone&feature=search_result
Free and it suppose to work according to the reviewers.

[Q] UEFA app

Greets Peoples
Usually I'm a searcher or a lurker on this forum but I find I have to put digits to keyboards as I find no answer on interweb or in this forum.
I am running 2.0.A.0.504 2.1-update1 on my X10i.
It has Jit installed and also Xrecovery.
Oh yeah phone is rooted too.
My issue is a strange one.
I have Anti-Virus free running on my phone and its alerts me when an app is being installed. All very good but...
For some reason my phone is installing the UEFA app.
It usually happens after a handset reboot. It automatically re-installs or even once, installed a second UEFA app onto my handset.
I uninstall it and sure enough after a reboot it installed again.
I can't find the apk file to remove that and have never had the UEFA app installed on this fw before. (It's rooted, why would I want unnecesary junk on it?)
This started happening since I installed the Multi-Touch onto the phone.
Now I'm pretty sure this shouldn't have caused this problem but I sure would like to find out what did?
Surely having the Auto-search enabled in settings wouldn't allow this without permission. Would it?
Anyway any thoughts or solutions would be great.
I'm not a soccer hater but "I" would like the choice of whether"I" want the app on my handset or not, not the other way around.
Any ideas?

Chinese virus?

I have noticed these chinese apps some how self installing on my S2.
Any idea how to get to the source of these unauthorized installs? (Lookout & AVG & NetQin don't detect them as malicious or find any reason for how they are getting on there).
Currently using KH3 + CFRoot.
Why do people give so little information when they post?
What Chinese apps? (Please provide a screen shot if the app name is in Chinese) .
This sounds really really bad.
Has this happened to any one else?
It should not be possible for this to happen.
Does your phone have any connection with China or have you installed any Chinese software?
If this is happening then you must have done something yourself to start the process. Nothing can install itself without your consent, unless there's malicious software that's bypassing the system and installing for you, but you would have had to install that first.
So, as above, a lot more information is needed. Personally, I'd just do a complete wipe and hard reset and never install anything from untrusted sources again, including warez, 3rd party app stores and the Chinese Market, which is known to have had dodgy software before now.
My friend got an S2 from China and it was preloaded with all those Chinese apps. Examples include QQ Security Suite and some other apps. I used Titanium Backup to uninstall but after each restart, the app re-appears!
I was surprised that Titanium couldn't uninstall. It says it uninstalled successfully but it just re-appears. The only thing I could do is to do a re-flash to a Hong Kong firmware without all those pre-loaded Chinese apps.
But before you wipe everything, please help us try and find out how it happened?
Again has this happened to any one else? Because I want to know if this could happen to my phone!
Mine also did this on stock rom i would uninstall samsung apps reboot and it would reappear on my menu. Is it possible the rom comes with an auto install script for the preloaded apps?

If you have CF-Root, you have super user installed. Review your permissions. You can also install LBE privacy guard and set permissions for all apps as well, including many system apps (you'll need to 'untrust' them first).

Sorry for the little information guys, was 5am and very tired
I deleted the second incarnation of the app as soon as I saw it (worried about personal details being taken etc.) however it if it reappears again then I will screenshot it.
Virus scanners don't detect them as malicious, when the program opened (after stealth install) I went through it, albeit in Chinese it looked like a legit program and the menu worked etc.
I have market 3.1.3 installed (got the apk off the internet) and a few apps that got removed from the market place (torrent clients and certain games I couldn't find etc.) so it could well have been put in them.
I'm thinking about a hard reset, not using titan backup to avoid it coming back and a re-flash.
Also my phone has no connection with China (purchased in the UK), this has only happened recently.
Is there any more info needed before reset etc.?
Looks like the suspect apps removed from the market may have been the cause.
Does anybody know if running as root alows all download apps to run with root permissions?

Issue is the damage seems to have been done, looks like I have no choice but to reflash etc. Need a virus scanner that has root so it can do a deeper scan.
Superuser is a lot like UAC on Windows Vista/7, it will popup and ask you to allow/deny.
Also is there any way to wipe the device while re flashing to ensure this gets removed?
I found a folder on my Internal Storage "QinqiQuan" (Google Image search pinpoints this as one of the apps) which translates in Chinese to English as "Infringement", however the app itself appears to be a legitimate Chinese social app so I'm not sure of my original concern regarding "Infringement" being copyright related etc.
Another few suspicious folders were "the9GameCenter" & "waze".
In future I'll be sticking the Market and official sites, even if that means doing without certain apps that aren't available on my handset/region

The apps themselves appear legitimate, but I didn't authorize the installs which is what worries me.
I wiped internal storage, wiped data and then re-flashed + CFRooted.
Hopefully what ever it was, won't come back
And how about the security in your computer? As we know, you can install an app in your phone via your market account using your computer. Perhaps someone is playing around with your market account. If this is the case, changing your password would be a good idea.

Can I freeze the phone dialer?

I have a TMO Vibrant that I want to give to my 8 year old daughter so she can play games on it. There's no SIM card, but of course she can still (accidentally) call 911. I would like to just freeze the phone app, but I want to be sure that I can safely (from the phone point of view) do so. In other words, will it break the phone if I freeze the phone app? I am also hoping it will get rid of the "No sim card installed. Emergency calls only" warnings that won't go away. Secondly, if I can freeze the phone app, what exactly is the phone app called in TB? I don't see it there. I am using MIUI 20330 on kernel 2.6.35.12, android 2.3.7

I'm not too sure about the missing SIM card alert, but freezing the dialer app is very easy too do, and shouldn't cause any problems. There are also multiple ways to accomplish the task, however, I believe the most effective way would be to "manually" freeze the app. This can be done by following these steps:
Download an app like Root Explorer, if you don't already have it or don't have the money, a free alternative is Super Manager.
Go to the root of the phone, the directory being "/".
Go into the "system" folder. (Directory: "/system")
Then go into the "app" folder. (Directory: "/system/app")
Look around until you find an app called "phone.apk".
Rename it to "phone.apk.bak". This will effectively freeze the phone app.
It might also not hurt to freeze the contacts app, various email clients (gmail & email), the messaging app (mms), and other like apps using the same method mentioned in the previous steps.
Once the apps are frozen, you can even delete the file explorer app you used so that those core system files can't be accessed by your daughter.
For further monitoring of your daughter's device, you could even try an app like APP Lock. With a little bit of in app tweaking, you can block access to phone settings and even require a password to install and uninstall apps.
Another suggestion, you may also want to look into this ROM, I have a feeling it may satisfy your needs... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1566651.
If you need any help or have a question, please, don't hesitate to ask.

Haha! For once, it's someone BEING ABLE to call 911 that's the problem. :silly:
That was really good help. Thanks. Anyone know how to make the "Emergency calls only" notification go away? There must be some app that looks for a SIM card that puts it up there. Or maybe it's baked into the kernel and it can't be disabled???
Uninstall sim tool kit or stk from titanium backup to get the notificqtion to go away

App Hacking (Tricking WhatsApp into thinking it's installed on an Android Device)

New to the forums. I just installed WhatsApp for the first time and was able to get chatting with certain people only. Afterwards, I just logged in to desktop whatsapp and uninstalled it on my phone only to realize I can not use it without having it installed. Is there any way to trick WhatsApp into thinking the number associated with the device has the app? How would I even begin to fix this issue?
Try with an android emulator, may have a bit of better luck. Install WhatsApp on the emulator and verify it with your phone number. I haven't personally tried this, but this should work if you need to run any mobile app on your computer you can use this method.

Question Changing Default Apps

I was wondering if anyone with the Find N can test to see if they can change the default apps and see if it sticks?
I always use Google Messages and Dialler and was hoping I was able to change them as have it stick. I know the issues with the Launcher and I am concerned that it will be the same with these other apps.
On a side note has anyone been able to get Android Auto to work?
What would the dab command be to set the default sms ?
I have found this:-
How to disable any pre-installed system app bloatware on Android without root
If you hate the bloatware or pre-installed apps on your Android smartphone, here's how to disable them even if Android doesn't normally let you.
www.xda-developers.com
Not sure if it will cause damage so perhaps use it with caution!
Hey bud! Just downloaded both Google Messages and Phone and was able to switch it to default. I used adb commands to remove all the bloatware, and it's wayyyy less chinese-y.
Only thing I still can't figure out is how to get Nova Launcher working, as I preferred how that ran before. That said, it's starting to feel way nicer now.
Are they actually sticking though and survive a reboot? Have you tried Android Auto?
How did you get rid of the default messaging app please post ads commands : )
I read in another sad forums that even after deleting the default sms app and installing google sms you will still get the pop up

I tried disabling the default sms app and using google messages did not work.. will not let me send texts via any app
So here's the deal, don't remove the default messaging app or replace it with Google messages. It won't work the way you think it will. I was able to remove the default messaging app via adb. You'll be able to set the Google messaging app to default. The issue is, every time you get a text, you'll get a pop-up saying something like "your default messaging app was changed back due to security". It'll do this every time you get a new text.

Are you getting the pop up giving you the security warning everytime you receive a message?
Yes. I gave up. Using oppos now.
Ah that is not great, does it allow RCS messaging at all? That may be a deal breaker for me!
There IS an option but only for heytap users only...
I received mine and the limitations are too great. The hardware is awesome, but is ruined by horrible software that is locked down so strictly. The messaging and Android Auto issues were the things that made the decision easy.
If this ever gets a International release I will be all over it, but unfortunately I cannot handle the limits.
