[Q] Atrix 4.5.91 Factory Reset/Master Clear Clarification - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I'm having a hard time finding a definitive answer on how to flash back to stock on an Atrix. This is my friends phone, so I know little about the device, but am familiar with modding (own a captivate).
She updated to 4.5.91 OTA gingerbread, and her phone has been acting funny lately. I was planning on doing a factory reset/master clear, but I don't know if it would reset the phone to it's state before the download of gingerbread (and hard bricking, what I've been reading about a lot). The phone is stock, non unlocked and no root (don't want either).
So I suppose the TL;DR is, can you master clear/factory reset a phone on 4.5.91 and would it be ok? How do you backup contacts/etc without a custom recovery?
Thanks

Yes you can factory reset without bricking, and your contacts are usually backed up to your gmail account. As far as backing up "etc", be more specific.

thanks man as i said this id my first android device but i am familiear with jailbreaking on ios but have been told that it is a lot esier to brick something on the android side of things not sure if it is true.
but im refering to the options the phone has on restoring
I have Gingerblur 4.5 installed, I did a factory restore so that I could get the new OTA Gingerbread update from AT&T but it's still showing gingerblur after I did the restore...
Should I do the flash of sbf 1.26? I'm so confused, I stopped following XDA for a couple months and I don't know what to do for fear of bricking my phone. Getting lost in these threads. I just wanna go back to stock with Gingerbread...

If you're on GingerBlur...a factory reset will NOT return you to stock. you have to flash back to, yes, 1.26 and OTA all the way to Gingerbread.

[Q] What's the risk in installing the prerooted p3droid gingerbread

What chance is there of me bricking my phone by doing sbfing, rooting, installing custom recovery, and then applying p3's custom update? Have there been reports of people irreversibly bricking their phones by doing any of this? I am trying to assess the risk of doing this.
Just sbf and factory reset and don't install anything but system recovery and you will be fine
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA Premium App
There should be little risk but one thing you should know is that you take a risk anytime you modify your phone from it's factory condition. With that said, make sure your have Gingerbreak.apk and MOTODX2_Bootstrap_signed.apk in the root of your SDCard (external card). SBF to factory so that you have a clean plate to start with... think of it as going to a buffet... you must use a clean plate each trip Once you root and install the bootstrap you'll want to boot into recovery then do a data wipe to make sure you don't run into trouble. Then simply install the zip. It will take about 5 minutes or less.
P.S. Make sure to put the update in the same place you put the other two files.

Pretty much every dev has in their sig something about putting your phone at risk any time you modify the system, that being said i am a total noob at this stuff and i got it right first try, even having to sbf back from 2.3.3. As long as you are careful and follow all directions you shouldnt have a problem. i suggest doing an android factory reset after SBFing to 2.2.2 and before rooting it, then root, bootstrap, upgrade and do ANOTHER factory reset through recovery. after doing all that mine is BEAUTIFUL
Well I sucked it up and finally did it. No more than an hour from start to finish, excluding sbf download time, including time to read, reread, and read again the instructions.
Could not have gone smoother.
Somehow my apps just started downloading. Does that make sense? Is it because I had moved the apps to the media area?
Did you back up your apps to google? That could explain your apps being restored.

[Q] Return AT&T Atrix to factory, locked condition?

Hi guys, posting for my wife here. She has an Atrix, running Cherry Pi 0.7 currently (unlocked bootloader, romracer recovery, etc). The touchscreen is completely borked, doing all kinds of weird things. I know it's a hardware issue, i have tried flashing 3 different roms, 4 different keyboards, and multiple wipe/reinstalls of roms. Always does the same stuff with the touchscreen - not responding to input, random multiple presses of qqqqqqqq when trying to type, soft buttons not working, etc.
i want to return the phone to complete stock so i can send it in to Motorola to be either repaired or exchanged. I cannot find any insrructions for this for an AT&T Atrix. How can i get back to stock os, factory recovery, and locked bootloader like when it was new? I tried search, but cant find exactly what im looking for. Can someone help me out, please? Thanks.
its been said before that once you're unlocked, you're always unlocked. Flash a fruitcake for a stock setting.

If you haven't updated to OTA 2.3.4, you can SBF flash 2.2.2 and it will restore your phone to default.
Note: It will remain unlocked, but it won't show the "Unlocked" text during boot.
This way you might get lucky and they fix it without noticing that it's unlocked.
Good luck.

Not pudding, I meant SBF flash full stock 2.2.2 rom.
BUT YOU CAN ONLY DO IT IF YOU HAVEN"T UPGRADED TO OFFICIAL OTA 2.3.4!
Or you will HARD BRICK! LOL.

guess that's a little moot in this case since he's sending it back to motorola anyways lol
The other suggestion is to sbf flash the 2.3.4 sbf, still may risk hard bricking since it's not really confirmed if it's safe since most of the hard bricks have from sbfing backwards.

Lol hes returning back to Moto anyways ha ha! I'll try it out, I fastbooted to Gingerbread (via Kenn) So I never did the OTA.... so I guess I am safe.
Per this post, you can tell if you've flashed OTA 2.3.4. If it has been flashed already, then DO NOT downgrade to a official 2.2.2 build.

Its safe. I have done it. U can sbf the 2.3.4 (4.5.91) over 2.3.4 (4.5.91) even after ota. I used the pudding sbf and did not brick my phone. Even still, same rules apply, your risk.

Yeah but doesn't using the pudding 2.3.4 (4.5.91) still makes you have the "Unlocked" thing on the boot setting? which is what the OP wants to avoid so if he takes it to like AT&T if they see it and see Unlocked they will void the warranty, I am pretty sure the retail story wont extract his phone to see if the fuse it sparked and unlocked.
Thanks for the replies, guys. I basically need to get back to 2.3.4 with no "unlocked" logo on boot. I'm pretty sure they won't go and check bootloader status for touchscreen issues (I hope).
If I sbf the factory 4.5.91 will it remove the unlock logo and restore webtop, etc?
If I flash the fruitcake version, does that get rid of the unlock logo?
I guess that's my main concern so I can return for repair, just getting it back to appear normal. Thanks again.

I am not sure about the sbf, but I can tell you for sure fruitcake will not get rid of the unlock logo, flashing a fruitcake is only a stock ROM.

No. Only if you haven't upgraded via ota update. If you did, then there is no way of removing "unlocked" yet.

Just a thought... did you ever back up your PDS partition?
Touchscreen issues sometimes are due to pds issues. If you have made a backup, wouldn't be a bad idea to try restoring it to see if that fixes your issue.
If you didn't back it up, take a look at this thread with a pds file that helped others.

Probably a long shot but, I used to have very similar issues with other phones in the past when I've had a screen protector on for awhile and it gets scratched up. Maybe try remove the screen protector if there is one and see what happens.
If it is going back for repair. why not intentionally hard brick it? The first thing they will do is the full blown factory flash, erasing all evidence.
If you do this, make certain you give them a story that somehow describes both the actual problem and the bricked condition (else they might think the un-bricking fixed it and not catch the other issue.
EDIT: Maybe not all evidence, the fuse that was blown when you unlocked a 2.3.4 might be a real hardware type fuse and never be cleared. Don't know.
My device is doing this exact same thing and I'm in the same position you are in. I never backed up the PDS partition, but a backup using the image in the linked thread did not solve the problem. Nor did flashing multiple new ROMs.
I'm not sure if this is a hardware or software problem. It problem seems to go away if you lock the screen a few times, but then later reapers.
Sorry to hijack this thread, but does anyone know if replacing the digitizer will fix this problem? Since I'm in New Zealand this would be an economic solution as shipping to and from the US is pricey.

Ok, I have the same issue as you, I was able to fix the "unlocked" logo ( I havn't taken it back to AT&T yet for warranty, but I will update when I do). So this is what I did, when I upgraded to 4.5.91 I fastbooted it instead of OTA or flashing it, I also unlocked my bootloader by using pudding. Assuming if you did the same, then will be able to flash the official 4.5.91 via SBF ( I wasnt going to try 1.8.3 because I didn't want to risk the brick). I got the 4.5.91 sbf from this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125944 ... My phone is still rooted, but the "unlocked" logo is now gone and I flashed fruitcakes so It looks completly stocked now! I hope this helps, I dont think you will fool motorola if you send it in for repairs, but I am pretty sure you can get by with that if you have to return it to the store for warranty reasons! Good luck : )

I just saw this. I ended up using the stock 2.3.4 sbf, and then doing a factory reset in the privacy menu. Now has all the stock info in the "about phone" section. I'll let you all know how it goes. Thanks for the suggestions.
Just got back from AT&T! they said it was a software issue! They gave me the warranty and gave me a refurbished Atrix with 1.8.3, stock froyo on it! I'll stay OTA until CM7 comes out of pre-beta then see how to root it after OTA : )

Can I upgrade to Stock ICS directly from 2.3.4?

Hello - I didn't like the updates I heard about in the factory 2.3.6 ROM update, so I skipped it. And, I'm rooted.
So, a few questions:
Can I upgrade directly from 2.3.4 to ICS from a rooted phone? Or do I need to step-up to 2.3.6 first?
Do I need to actually unroot before I do any of this?
Can I re-root once I go ICS?
I've heard that the best bet is to do a factory reset after upgrading to ICS. If I do this, is the best bet to do a Titanium Backup app & data backup/restore process? Are there any better solutions to capture all my data that I'd lose with a reset?
Any info/insights greatly appreciated. Note: I have searched far and wide on XDA for answers to these questions, but I could not find any direct answers that made me feel confident enough to move forward. So, any direct response appreciated.
Thx.

1. yes, you can upgrade straight from 2.3.4 I've done it.
2. you don't need to unroot before - the upgrade will unroot you.
3. your best bet is NOT TO FACTORY RESET AFTER UPGRADE - IT COULD BRICK YOU BECAUSE OF A KNOWN BUG IN FACTORY KERNEL
4. If you want rooted version of upgrade look for the odin.heimdall version the Creepyncrawly put in the development section.
or you could try Semi UCLE5 that i have linked in the signature. It looks like the stock upgrade but it is smoother, among other things.
Good luck!
Jon first of all, you can always upgrade to any new update regardless of your Android version so it's a Yes to your first question. Secondly, whenever you update to a stock ROM your device gets unrooted itself so you'll have to root it again.

Jack Man & uetfreak - thanks! Great feedback.
A couple follow-on questions for Jack Man:
I've read about the kernel bug, but THANK YOU for reminding me that it would affect a simple factory reset. Yeesh, that's a pretty serious bug when a standard reset could brick a phone. So, one remedy, as you say, is to go with UCLE5. Smoother sounds ideal to me (I've heard that ICS on GS2 is a bit jittery on the homescreens, which totally stinks). But if I go with OCLE5, that's a custom ROM so that means I'll lose the ability to do the OEM upgrade to keep all my apps & data intact, correct?
If that's correct, what's the best way to ensure all my settings, contacts, apps, data can be easily restored on a wiped phone? I have Titanium Backup + Root. I assume I'd keep root with OCLE5? And would I just run a TB restore on apps & data (and not system settings)? Are there any system settings I can backup/restore safely between ROMs/OS versions?
I've never flashed a custom ROM so I don't know how y'all keep all your stuff intact as you switch around!
Thx.

Well, first, since you have never flashed a custom rom I would suggest reading until you're sick of reading before flashing. It will pay off in the long run. Regarding flashing from 2.3.4 up to Custom UCLE5 and keeping all of your apps and contacts - I'm not sure how that would go, honestly. For me, my contacts and calendar are saved on my computer through MSOutlook and I sync them with MyPhoneExplorer without any problems. Most of the apps I use (which is not a lot at all) I don't bother backing up when I flash roms and wipe data clean. I have backed up some in the past with Titanium Backup (pro version is worth it), but only if I know absolutely that I need the data from them. Otherwise, I have just done fresh installs of apps because I have read so much about people having ROM issues from restoring apps with titanium.
About losing the ability to do the OEM upgrade - If you ever want to you can, it'll just take time, and yes, you would have to wipe data anyway to go back to 2.3.4 then use KIES. Kind of a pain if you ask me. Plus, ask anyone here on custom stuff - once you go with a custom ROM, you won't want to go back to stock - EVER.
Hope this helps. feel free to pm me if you need. I'll be on the road for the next few days. remember - READ as much as you can. start with the "stickies" in the top of the main thread with a little pin on the left.
p.s. one more thing. Get yourself a usb jig. it's only a few buck online. once you start flashing roms you may want to try other ones. If you make a mistake somewhere, a jig can get you out of a jam quick.
Make sure to factory reset after. Ive read many problems with notifications messing up until the reset was done. I've done it no problems. On two seperate s2 i777s. Its always best to do this after a big update to the next version

Good idea. I do resets if I come from gingerbread too. But I know with this ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1650948) you have to make sure you have the kernel that is based off of the stock kernel - AJ's kernel to safely factory reset. I think you will get a boot loop if you factory reset with the Siyah installed. I could be wrong, but I remember getting a boot loop on mine when I had siyah installed. Maybe it was because i did a reset from settings/back up and reset/factory reset and then formatted the sd card (since I had so much useless crap on there, luckily backed up on my pc).

You're kidding right? No do not tell him to factory reset with the stock kernel. If his phone has the big he could burn out his emmc chip. Then he would need to pay mobile tech videos to jtag it.

you have to flash iOS on your phone first before you can upgrade to cupcake, immediately update to donut before rebooting, then you have to go through eclair, froyo, and you will find yourself at gingerbread. DO NOT REBOOT AFTER FLASHING GINGERBREAD!! you have to flash ICS during the shutdown process....if you miss your cue, you will have to start all over

just got this modded Atrix from a friend. i think it is unlocked, cause its now running a custom ROM (dont know what it is though). it's also rooted now. well i dont want to go on and mod this phone myself for now cause im still studying how to.
i want to do a factory reset, cause of the google account. i cant get to remove it's sync. when i try to press remove account it just says i need to do factory reset cause some apps still uses the account. question is, what will happen if i reset my phone? will it become locked again? or may unrooted?
sry for the noob question.
What rom is it running? Technically, a factory reset is just a soft reset that deletes user data etc., and doesn't unroot your phone.

honestly, i dont know what rom it has right now. any ideas how to identify? well does factory reset remove the unlocked status of the phone?
The boot animation could provide some hints as to what ROM is installed. Settings > About is a good place to look too. As for other questions, I think you need to do a LOT more reading and learning. You seem to be confused about several aspects of a phone that have absolutely nothing to do with each other. For example: factory reset, lock/unlock, root - none of those have anything to do with the other. Next, you keep saying "lock" or "unlock" but you don't specify WHICH lock/unlock (yes, there are several).
In short - you can do a factory reset without any worries, and then you should probably get on to reading about concepts and terminology of an Android phone (since a lot of this is actually not even Atrix-specific).
