[Q] G Tab OS Upgrade? - G Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi...
Would someone please let me know what options are available for my G Tab as far as upgrading to the latest OS?
Following are the details of my tab as it is now.
One of the first G Tabs.
Model Number: VEGan-TAB-v1.0b5.1.1 (done this the day I purchased it)
Android Version: 2.2
Kernel Version: 2.6.32.9-dirty <> [email protected] #6
Build Number: harmony 2.2 FRF91 20101123.172729
Software & directions please.
Thank you,
John & Pauline

Is there a reason you can't read the G Tablet Android Development forum?

Yes there is...
I have Adult ADD and my comprehension and retention is very poor. I am afraid that If I rely on my interpretation, I may get it wrong.
I feel that a direct response to my questions would be more accurate for me and that I would have less of a chance of making a mistake.
Thanks,
John

There's no such thing as "Adult ADD". The name of the disorder is abbreviated ADHD, and there's no distinction between childhood and adult forms apart from the age of the patient. I have ADHD, too, and that didn't keep me from getting an advanced degree (I went to medical school, did a psychiatry residency and fellowship, and ended up specializing in treating adults with ADHD) or figuring out my tablet.
You really shouldn't rely on other people to make your choices for you whether you have ADHD or not.
In this case, the number of options is very large. Each of them is different and better-suited for different situations. We know absolutely nothing about how you use your tablet, so are not in a position to select a ROM. If we did have that information, nobody would still be able to make the perfect recommendation for you since everyone has different opinions about the best solution for a given problem.
This would be like asking "what's the best car" without specifying your needs or budget and also asking which color and options you should pick. You just have to do the work yourself.
Most of us pick a firmware after having installed and tried a number of alternatives. Some people literally install a new one daily.
A good place to start in your deliberations is to ask yourself what your current firmware isn't doing for you that you think a different firmware would do. Do you really need to change, or do you just want something newer for its own sake?

There is no such beast as the "Latest OS." There are roms based on newer and older versions of android. Each have their own pros and cons. Read up on each Rom, decide based on your individual needs, and flash it (following one of the dozens of available tutorials, or the developer's instructions).

Sure there is, depending on how you define it.
There's the latest official firmware from nVidia, which is relatively recent.
There's also the most recent official release of Android, which isn't even available for the g-Tablet.
Overall, though, I agree with what I think is your real point: the OP is asking a question to which he's never going to get a satisfactory answer because there are too many different interpretations of what "latest OS" might mean.

I will be greatly appreciative of the one answering my questions, and fellow newbies will hopefully be too.

So what you're saying is that everyones taste is different?
Of course I understand that everyones taste is different when it comes to the launchers, thats why I asked which one do YOU recommend. Don't feel like downloading them all.
When it comes to roms though, how can you say everyone's taste is different. I asked which ROMS have the fastest results (quadrant score) and lags the least. That has nothing to do with that everyones taste is different
The point being with everyone's taste being different is that regardless of what we recommend, you are still going to keep on switching based on the opinions, hence there is no difference between us telling you what is best, to you finding what is best, you're still going to experiment. Anyways I prefer tw.
Rom? I don't know. Really i could care less about benchmarks, I could cheat off one to make my phone look like god and yours a piece of crap, and at the end of the day, they still run the same. Frankly they are all the same to me, no difference in speed, etc, just a different UI. It's not hard to try a couple and compare, try it. Unless spending a couple of bandwidth downloading roms and sitting down and trying a a rom for an hour is totally a workout for you then I see no reason for this thread.
Root? Does it matter? If you can read and understand it shouldn't matter which technique unless you are in some ways mentally deficient. There is nothing big to rooting, you only need to be able to read.
ICS? That isn't even going to come out officially anytime next month or so. Maybe next year, but not this year. So if a couple of months is a short time to you, then please, don't flash a custom rom and wait a couple of months for the iCS release.
All of this will depend on you and what suits your needs... from rom kernel radio launcher tweaks... blah so many variables....
Closed like all others...
Flash away tweak find feel some reward for DIY ;-)

[Q] What 2do after unboxing galaxy note ?

Hey all,
I am switching frm BB to android and am quite excited for it. I ordered note for at&t frm amazon.com for 200$$...seems to be a good price.
Now being completely new to the android world and to the world of rooting, flashing, etc. I would appreciate some help or opinions.
After reading various forums and threads, the first things I will do after getting my device is to root it. I will use rootgalaxynote dot com for that.
Next comes upgrading to ICS. This is where I am confused. There are so many versions, how do you guyz figure out which one is the best or the latest. It was soo easy in blackberry, there was a linear numbering system where 7.1 is better than 7.0 and so on. But in adroid, there are sooo many different names like onlyone, noteworthy, cm9, saurom...how to choose one and which one is the latest ?
Next, I have to enable free tethering to my laptop. I had this app on my BB from tether.com, but I don't know which app to use on Note and how to make it work. Any help will be highly appreciated.
Lastly, it would be gr8 if you could let me know what more to do to make my note more useful and efficient with good signal strength and battery life. Also recommendations for the must-have apps would be great.
Thank you.

First off...Welcome.
All of the names you listed are ROMs. They all run on the latest ICS leak 4.0.4. But since you're new to android, Id recommend stock ICS.
The latest ICS leak is called UCLE2. If you want to try it out stock ICS first before flashing roms, you need to download the ICS UCLE2 leaked "tar" file. http://www.ponack.net/designgears/leaks/SGH-I717UCLE2_74A55FA71D15964F9EC9E9489B34DE4E.exe
Be sure to download this file from your computer, not your phone.
I ffound some instructions on how To do it. Make sure you READ it atleast 5 times before actually doing it. ALSO, Be sure to have all the files you need before attempting. If you get confused, search it up on XDA...as most people have already posted it. If not, don't hesitate to ask.

-Once you go NOTE, you'd say 4 inches a Joke
-iOS = inspiring Outdated Software
i'll just copy/paste this from another thread as it applies here.

I would have to advise waiting a while.
1. Keep in mind what it means to root a phone. You are giving yourself the highest access and control priveleges on your devise and remaining at that privelage level from here on out. In the IT world this is actually a huge nono for security. Look at what you are downloading. What does the app want for permissions? Why does a live wallpaper need full network access ? Why does it need to be able to keep the phone from sleeping? Malware for android is on the rise but a rooted phone is by far the most vulnerable. With android, the security of our devises rests on us not being brain dead like iFail users. In return we get nearly unlimited potential on what can be ran on our phones.
2. People forget that this is xda DEVELOPERS. If you are expecting a 100% polished and refined product without hickups here and there then you are in the wrong place. Yes the roms are fantastic. We have some real talent working on the galaxy note but don't expect the moon.
3. Don't start trying to root and flash until you are comfortable with the terminology that gets tossed around. If you don't know what CWM stands for then you haven't studied enough. Guides to accomplish flashing and rooting exist but trying to follow along with no concept of what is going on can lead to a lot of frustration if not disaster. If you don't understand why you need to do something, don't do it.

i know you're eager but enjoy your stock rom for a while. also you may not appreciate the responses you will get asking these most basic of questions. all of them have answers easily available in these subforums either by browsing or the search function. those questions have been answered 1000+ times so dont be suprised when no one jumps to give you the answers. this is xda DEVELOPERS (i.e. advanced users) not Noobs 'r Us. have fun learning as we all did.

ROM selection guidance for Xperia Ray

We have a problem: there are a ridiculous number of ROMs available, spanning 6 different versions of Android, each with their own pros and cons. There are so many choices that I imagine it must be completely overwhelming to someone who is new to custom ROMs, coming here to try to breathe life back into their device. (I find it overwhelming and I've been on XDA since 2007.)
So, I'm asking those of you who have tried and tested the many ROMs available for the Xperia Ray to please share the wisdom of your experience for the benefit of all.
This isn't a "what ROM is best" thread, because I know that specific ROMs fit specific purposes, i.e. if you absolutely want the latest Android features, you want a Kitkat ROM (perhaps at the expensive of speed). The idea is more to give people a place to start looking, i.e. if they know they need FM radio they should rule out any ROM based on Android 4.1+, and some recommendations given specific needs. If you recommend specific ROMs, please try to mention at least 2 different ones (and if you're the author, please disclose that so we know you're plugging your own ROM).
To spark your thoughts, consider your answers to any of the following questions. If we get enough people answering, I'll edit this post to add in general consensus answers to have a quick guide in place for other users looking for a new ROM.
Q: What Android versions provide full functionality of stock hardware, i.e. FM radio, 720p video recording.
- My understanding is that for FM radio to work, you need to be on Gingerbread or ICS. (Not sure on 720p video.)
Q: What Android versions or specific ROMs are the fastest (as in quickly responsive UI)?
- My impression (from thread comments) is that Gingerbread is still the fastest, but suffers in terms of battery life.
Q: What Android versions generally have the best battery life?
Q: What Android versions or specific ROMs offer the best performance for gaming only?
Q: What ROMs offer the best combination of speed, stability and battery life for day-to-day use?
- For example, if you're giving the phone to your girlfriend, you can't go wrong with <insert recommendation> or <insert recommendation>.
If you can think of other questions to help people with their decision-making, feel free to mention them and I'll add them to the list.
These kind of questions aren't allowed on XDA, you'll just have to test them out like everyone else does. Just because I feel a certain ROM is better than another doesn't mean everyone else will agree.
As you said "it is not a best ROM thread" but the with the points you included the discussion will eventually reflect the same as being "Best ROM" according to someones' preference. And even If I keep this thread open suggesting all the users just to share their opinion it won't go good as it would expected considering the past history regarding the matter. So, I will close this thread to avoid any kind of anarchy and also to keep you out of the trouble in future, thanks for understanding..

Custom Kitkat ROM with empasis on battery life, or 4.x emulation for 1 app?

So I'll just pick one at random then? Thanks for the help...
There is a thread with links to all the stock firmware releases. But downgrading has been debated if its even possible. The procedure is detailed in a couple different posts from what I've read. I doubt you will be able to run a kk ROM with the a LL bootloader and modem.

There are still Cyanogenmod 11 (KitKat) builds in the unified development section, that's probably your best bet. As mgp53 pointed out it's difficult if not downright impossible to downgrade android versions using the official firmware, if you're already on 5.1.1

Thanks so much! I am pouring through it now... might take a bit since I don't see a column for version number http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5/unified-development#romList but I'll just sort by latest release and click on every single link manually till I see a 4.x that isn't a buggy PoS. I was originally hoping to steer clear of AOSP/CM because I heard the battery life isn't as good as TW or "superslim" style stripped-down stock fws, but at this point I will take what I can get. I've had terrible luck getting any kind of answers across multiple subforums on this site. Your post was the most useful by far. Thanks again.
Incoming rant...
It really is a shame that 1) the download links on the 600+ Infinity ROM thread are all dead, 2) SlimROM doesn't seem to exist in any meanful/useable state for the s5 even though they have tons of devices including the s3/s4, 3) Sick n Twi5ted for 4.x is a buggy PoS, 4) Liquidsmooth has major missing features such as no camera (You thought releasing a ROM on a 16megapixel flagship device with no camera function was OK enough to start asking for donations and then never got around to adding support for the camera? At least have the decency to put a list of major bugs and missing features in the OP. It is debateably fraudulent to put a donate button where the 'Major Issues' section should be and then not even have a disclaimer.
Users of this site really ought not to have to pour through 60-600 pages to find out major flaws on a ROM. In all the dozens of threads I've sifted through over the past week there was exactly ONE who was up front and honest including a section devoted to missing features/major bugs.
/end_rant
On the bright side, all this madness had led me to seriously consider developing my own ROM and that would probably be a good thing for me in general to learn anyway. Or alternatively I could create a website devoted to archiving older ROMs since there seems to be quite a few that have gone missing here. (think oldversion.com circa 2005)
Whatever I decide to contribute, there certainly is room for a lot of it here.

[Discussion / Poll] ZTE Bits And Bytes Poll (week of 1/15) - Let's Go Vote -

Hello everyone,
it seems like ZTE need our vote and voices and they have created a Poll , here is the info and link :
https://community.zteusa.com/polls/1618
Welcome to our weekly Bits And Bytes poll and discussion! Give your honest opinion, debate ferociously, and respect each other at all times...
Question: If you had to pick one, would you prefer stock Android or the ability to choose from various community-developed custom ROMs?
Context: In the complex world of mobile operating systems or anything really, there is no one-size-fits-all solution. However, many are in the camp that believe stock Android comes close. But there's also the camp that believes only custom ROMs are the way to go, enabling users to select from different permutations of stock Android. If you had to pick one option, which option floats your boat and why?
Action: 1. Select one of the options below and 2. reply to justify your reasoning. Although there is no correct answer, please provide sound reasoning to support your selection. After a week or so, your Mod Squad will soon identify and reward those with the most thoughtful responses!

I will vote stock Android since we are already unlocked, and with a stock Android image to work with anything is possible. Really don't understand why they picked these two options.
I'm so tired of these polls.
I agree, at least in the general ZTE forum every freaking thread is a stupid poll. At least this one is from ZTE itself.

This is so true. I didn't even find the ZTE pool yesterday. But when I came across this thread I realized there is one.
Their forum has become very cluttered since the price drop for the Axon-7 for Xmas...
