Hi,
The most thing I want to do is adding more freq. steps in my NEO.
As you may know, the default stepping is:
112880, 245760, 368640, 76800, 86400, 10240
All I want is something between 368640 & 76800, maybe 51200, so I can make it more powersaving in some situations.
I see there is hacked kernel out here, I'm looking at DooMKernel.
My question is, can I just flash the kernel to the original rom? Or I must flash a third party rom so it can support thirdparty kernel?
I know I must unlock first, just not sure if it's possible to keep the system without re-install whole thing.

Hello,
I have searched the forum for 2 days with all possible keywords but not able to find a guide for noobs, hence posting this one. Please excuse if I have missed already existing thread.
Just bought a SGS2. Greatly happy with its performance but it has HongKong specific OS and there are lot of apps in Chinese which cannot be removed even upon factory reset. Also, the first boot starts with Chinese I wanted to change it to English, I don't mind getting any data wiped of as it is still very new. It seems to be already rooted as I can see a word root in the kernel version. Also, it has a word ZSK4 in the kernel version. I checked lot of threads and there are guides on how to change the kernel, firmware and rooting. But I don't find what should I change and also should I change the kernel or firmware and should I root it again.
Can you please guide me.

This should help - the noobiest noob guide, and very good it is too.
Newer firmwares have come out since then - check here.
Just Root your device. Keep the Stock firmware atm as you don't have much idea about Custom ROM's. To root, just follow Chainfire's method, can't be any simpler than that,

Thanks guys for these links, to noob's guide really is great. I got 3 questions now .
1. Can I change the kernel and firmware to any other of my choice so that it can be used in another country (i.e. India)
2. Default language of the phone depends on kernel or firmware?
3. The apps in my phone now are I guess, in the firmware, so changing it should help in getting rid of them, right?

1. Yes you can use any Kernel from any country as long as it is for SGS2 with the correct hardware.
2. Language depends on the system rom, it is not in the Kernel, except for UTF-8 support in file system.
3. Apps installed are stored in userdata partition, if the ROM is similar, the settings and apps can be used in the next rom as long as userdata partition is not wiped.
Example for 3:
Using Stock ROM
Flash rooted kernel, apps installed are not erased
Flash ROM (Samsung derivative such as Lite'ning, SkyROM) which are based from Stock, userdata partition is not erased, apps and settings are maintained.
Flash CM7 ROM (Not a derivative of stock rom), userdata partition is not erase, might suffer weird issues or might not boot due to data in userdata partition, recommended to format userdata, internal rom partition (full wipe).
Thanks a ton guys, I successfully changed the ROM to a complete English one!
Hello peeps
i just had a some more questions regarding the above subjects..
Am I right in knowing that you need compatible kernels to flash certain roms and for those to work?
And am I correct in believing that I can flash any kernel to my phone? (well SGS2's)
If so, when I want to flash a new kernel.. do I need to preload the zip file of compatible rom so i can flash it straight away? (because otherwise i will have a kernel and a rom that is not compatible?)
and with csc and modems..
when im in romkitchen do i need to select the specific options depending on my physical phone and location or kernel and rom?
thanks
1. no, you can mix and match roms and kernals.
ist flash the rom you like which comes with its own kernal, then you can flash another kernal like siyah on top of that to give some improvements.
2. almost any sgs 2 will work some will not read the developers comments, they will state if the rom will cause problems with certain versions of the phone.
3. answered in the above items.
4. csc and modem do depend on location, try to load csc and modems that work for your region of country, there are plenty of threads that answer the location question.
Hello all, I've got some questions
1. What does rooting mean? (And what does it?)
2. How can I hack/jailbreak my X10 mini?
3. How can I install ROMs? (and what is the most stable one for the x10 mini?)
4. Where do I can see what firmware my x10 mini is?
5. Is it safe to hack/jailbreak my phone?
6. What is the easiest way of hacking/jealbreaking the x10 mini?
These are all the questions I have for now (If I didn't forgot some) And I have read the stickies before, but I didn't get any wiser of them.
Hm, let's see
1. Rooting means getting complete access to your phone and perform actions not allowed before. THIS WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY. (There are ways to unroot and make the phone look like it has never been rooted before if you need to send it to assistance).
2. It depends what you mean with hack/jailbreak. Rooting is already a way of hacking it. If you wanna play some more with your phone, you can install a custom ROM and tweak its perfomance by raising CPU clock and so on.
3. Every ROM has its requirements and steps to be installed. AFAIK, all of them requires rooting, a specific firmware (ALWAYS CHECK FW VERSION BEFORE INSTALLING A CUSTOM ROM) and/or baseband version. Make sure your phone complies with all of them before even trying to install a custom ROM on it, or it will get bricked. There are a lot of custom ROMs with stable versions, just check the threads.
4. Settings > About phone > Page bottom
5. It voids your warranty and you may brick you phone, so do it at your own risk.
6. There are a lot of softwares to do that, just search in the threads.
If you looked the stickies and got no answer, I'm afraid I have to ask you to do it again and look better, the answers are all around.
Thanks for the information, I guess I rooted it because I now have an app called 'Superuser'. So can I get safely a ROM installed or do I have to do more? I also read something about kernel and stuff, what does that mean? Is it necessary for my phone?
Yes, if you want to use a custom ROM, you have to install the proper kernel. For MiniCM7, which is the one I use, you need nAa kernel (it also works with other ROMs).
ATTENTION REQUIRED: if you wanna try a custom ROM, you'll need to unlock your phone's bootloader. You can also search threads about it. If you try to flash a custom kernel without unlocking the bootloader, you'll brick your phone.

Like title ask, wich way for flashing new firmware is safest?
But wich way is better for device?
And wich way is cleanest (dont stay bargabe files from previous version, etc) ?
Any way, write dear member yours opininon abot this diferent ways flashing ROMs.
Regards
Rom flashing tool depends upon the rom instructions not on what you like .
None are of less risk if instructions followed .
jje
- for mods and stuff i would use TWRP or CWM
- i perfer odin for flashing stock.
...it's up to you.

If you want my 2 pence worth of an opinion...
Never touch Odin...lots of possibilities of something going wrong and very difficult to recover...
Don't know about Mobile Odin..never used it..
Custom Recovery FTW...generally ROMs or mods interact only with the system, data and boot partition and hence the probability of anything messing up with the EFS partition and Bootloader is minimal..however Odin interacts with the Bootloader while flashing so the chance of it getting screwed are larger..
However, It is me and I like to see what I am flashing..(which is easier with CWM)..so that I know what may go wrong...
best rom?
It all depends
It all depends on what you want out of it, I personally run stock but that's because I'm having alot of trouble, which I believe is due to my phone and not to the rom. Be aware that some roms don't include the Ultra Stamina mode. If you need root then you have to check if the rom supports Magisk or SuperSu. They all differ in their own way and you might just have to try some of them to get a clear image. I personally like the concept and poison roms, but that's just my personal prefrence and I haven't tried them all.
