[Q] Changin kernals on CM7 Touchpad - TouchPad General

Are we able to apply any kernal made for ASOP (Cyanogen) for use on our CM7 Touchpads? I have a Sensation and have tried several kernals such as faux, bricked, and Tiamat, and would like to also use these on the touchpad. I just don't want to mess anything up.

when you don't want to mess things up..... do your homework and read. show us the AOSP Kernel you want to apply and we tell you if it will work (I would say 100% no)
ps.: questions don't belong in development section

Not sure of you are trolling or if you really asking this question? Please read before posting questions and post them in q&a. Two
Different products and categories can't use same kernels unless they usE same hardware components etc

I think its cuz the drivers are proprietery but I know for sure its cuz Samsung jumbles up the source code so it makes it harder to combine the cm7 code with the Samsung code

I've wondered the same thing.. perhaps has something to do with the framework? Still no 'official' leak of the Gingerbread source for the Samsung Fascinate.. maybe someone can fill us in?
It has nothing to do with the bootloader. All an unlocked bootloader does is allows you to install custom ROMs and kernels without having to use elaborate workarounds like they use for the Droid X (and even then, there's no way to install custom kernels). The problem, as stated before, is with the proprietary code Samsung uses for its device drivers.
Incidentally, all questions belong in the Q&A section, even those having to do with development. The Development section is for posting ROMs, kernels, and mods, along with the occasional step-by-step guide.

Well, considering that cm7 is gingerbread and that means .35 kernels (GB kernels). And our current functioning cm7's are using hacked. 32 kernels (froyo kernels), I'm amazed any of it functions. Jt and kaos have done an amazing job combining something that wasn't supposed to be together.

As others have said, it's Samsung's proprietary code and stuff. But I have a question for you? Is that the case with the Galaxy S2 as well? I know they didn't use their proprietary RFS file system, is it the same with everything else?

If you jump on over to the Galaxy S II Android Development forum and scroll down far enough, you'll find a thread for an AOSP ROM. In the OP you'll find a very familiar list of things that don't work. That tells me that Samsung has still not repented of its wayward ways and is still using proprietary code for its device drivers.

All OEM manufacturers use proprietary code, even HTC does. What really matters is how much did they change from the stock AOSP code, and how easy is it to reverse engineer the stuff that they did change that is needed. Samsung made a lot of stupid changes in our AOSP code that are unique to the Fascinate (like padding data) which makes trying to get AOSP working that much harder.

[Q] Almost ashamed to ask, but what are the "top" ROM's?

I browsed through the development section and there is SO MUCH STUFF THERE. :/
Even if I read it all I would still not really get a good answer to my question:
What are the most popular, consistently maintained and stable ROM's out there that aren't heavily themed (I like AOSP or close, not MIUI)?
I've used CyanogenMod on my Nexus but it's still in experimental phase for SG2 and I don't really want to start off my new uberphone with broken stuff.
So far from what I've gathered is that Villainrom is at least consistently maintained, but their website is almost devoid of any information in regards to looks and features.
Batista70(?) also sounds like a relatively popular choice?
I realize this sounds like a completely idiotic question from someone that's too lazy to read, but honestly to answer this question you can't just read for a few hours, you need to have been around the community for a longer time to get the feel of everything.

You are correct if you want an honest opinion look yourself try them their are a billion users asking the same question with the same answer their is no best rom .
Why not start with the simplest rom that you understand what's on it and how to flash it .
Then work your way through others .
jje
Atm, i think the best roms (no one over the other, they all good the same)
Batista70 Foxhoud 2.0
Villainrom 3.0
Leomar 2.7
those are the roms i personally tested, and looks like also the most "used" by the community.
Im sorry if i didnt listed someone else rom, it's only because i didnt tested personally.
All the 3 are KI3 (2.3.5) based, so they may have few bugs/instability since 2.3.5 is less than 1 week old.
For the KH3 (2.3.4) every rom is very stable and works fine, i personally tested:
Cognition 1.5.1
Lite'ning 6.1
Checkrom v3
If you want a not perfect (few bugs) but totally different rom, i suggest you to try gangsterjoop Miui 1.9.23 or Galnet Miui 1.9.23

That was actually more a roll of the eyes to this type of question. It gets answers like yours (no offence meant) where people just tell you what they use. Not many people have done extensive testing of every single available ROM, but people still keep asking these lame questions.
Also 'best' is very personal, unless one gives certain criteria.
I agree I'm new here and the selection is daunting. I've HAD,
HTC Tattoo
HTC Desire
ZTE Blade
Moto Defy
HTC HD2
Sony X10
This phones section seems even bigger than the HD2 forum!
Ephumuris
the best rom out there with regarding battery life and looks is..................
the one that will suit your needs and that YOU have to find out and experiment buddy.
its all good for us to tell you which one is good but unless you dont try for yourself you wont know..
but if you want a choice i recommend VillainRom or Batista two that i use back and forth or even CheckRom
but whatever you do make sure you read through each roms thread and take it from there...happy flashing

NEW ANDROID DEVELOPMENT FORUM

Hey Guys, just a heads up, but we got the green light for the new forum to be added. The Administrators have decided to name them:
AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Android Development
AT& Samsung Galaxy S II Ported Development
So obviously all Hellraised and Flashoholic ROMs will go into the Ported Dev Forum and all the i777/AT&T Original based ROMs will stay in the Android Dev Forum.
Its looking like it will be created and setup for us this weekend, so prepare for both forums to be easier to navigate and it wont seem so crazy in just one forum for development.
Does that include bases that were built from i9100 firmwares?
XWLA4 bases for example, since we just got a wave of them.
You edited your post after I quoted you... roms that are build from the ground up (no matter the base) will stay in Original.
So what is left then, cause I still only see ShoStock and UnNamed as being the only ones still on AT&T base.
Then Entropy's & Siyah's kernel, scripts, as the other stuff that would belong here.
Unless I am missing something.
I think I am going to like this, but boy is it going to empty out the Original Dev. forum. I can think of maybe 5 ROMS that will stay.
Roms that are just Hellraised or flashoholic'd will be moved to ported... because they were just ported.
All roms, like for instance Binnacle because Pirateghost did it from the ground up (even though its an i9100 base) will stay in Android Development. He didnt port over an already existing i9100 rom.

Makes sense, thanks Red. You should put that info in the main post, for dummies like me.
Chris: I bought this phone fairly early, so I was flashing design-gears roms (2 of them here). There's Serendipity/UnNamed which are also veterans. ShoStock came a bit later. Theres also little ones here and there that died out quick.
Yea I know about Serendipity, but that hasn't been touched in forever.
Shostock is still updating, while UnNamed might not be its still has a good fanbase, I think someone is trying to resurrect the rom though if I read the posts correctly.
I am happy for the changes though.
Sick liking it
Yeah, my interpretation of it is:
If you started with I9100 stock firmware, and started doing things from the ground up (such as following my Sh1tROM guide) are still original development.
If some other person created a ROM and you ported it - it's Ported.
That leaves cases where the original I9100 firmware developer hellraises and posts here - I believe that it can stay, since it is still that developer's original work.
Wish you had that guide earlier, would have made it easier on me.

Then your thread goes in the trash and we tell you to start over, but do not collect $200.
Uh, it depends on how close it is to the rom that you ripped off... if its just a clean Samsung base (dosent matter what phone it was for) and you did everything else, then it goes in Original. If it s just a hybrid of this rom and that rom that has already been created, then it goes in Ported.

Segregate the ported/hellraised i9100 roms from the i777 AT&T custom roms!

I still think that all i9100 roms should go into the new forum.
That way those of us who are looking forward to AT&T/i777 custom roms
will not be confused by seeing a lot of i9100 custom roms in the forum
ported/hellraised or not.
In any case my suggestion is to have a seperate i777/AT&T custom rom forum.
(at first that's what I thought you were talkiing about)

The issue with this, which has already been mentioned in this thread by others, is that the Original Android Development would be empty with about 4 roms and 2 kernels, while the other Ported forum would be super busy because 94% of all of our roms are currently based off of i9100 firmware... so it really wouldnt be offloading the mass chaos that we are currently experiencing.
Think about when ICS drops for the i9100, the Ported forum will be BOOMING while the Original will be dead, so it defeats the purpose of creating a new forum.

[Q] Why do most ICS ROMs have TouchWiz stuff in them?

My phone is an HTC Desire Z, but my sister has an SII. Long story short, she heard about Android 4 and it's cool features, and wants to try them out. Her phone is rooted, and I flashed a couple ICS ROMs, but have noticed that they are a mishmash of AOSP and Samsung stuff.
For my phone, we've got a few pure ICS builds, and a few ICS + Sense 4/3.6 builds. The differentiation is quite plain to see. Coming to the SII threads, I don't really know if I'm on the right forum, since there are like three different Android Development threads.
Can someone help me? I just want pure AOSP. Like CM9. No TouchWiz stuff.

Install CM9 then. Can't get any more like CM9 than CM9.
There is me trying to find ICS actually with TW.
G development is separate as its a different hardware .
Original Development is as it says .
Android Development is basically cut and paste and not original .

CM9? For what I know that's not ready yet... is it?
I mean, in the Desire Z development section, we're still in Beta stage. Camera stuff isn't really okay yet.
Can't speak for CM9, but I can speak for D4 rom (which is based off the latest CM9 nightlies anyway). Everything is working (except HDMI out, I believe). Battery life is acceptable, and no random crashes or anything like that.

Learn to search and read and you'll find answers.
You never know, your searching might eventually lead you to things like http://teamhacksung.org/wiki/index.php/CyanogenMod9:GT-I9100:Nightly:Known_issues maybe even a development thread and at a stretch a Q&A thread.
Good luck on your quest.

First thing, please post problems in Q&A section. Second thing, there is no best rom in XDA. If you want a rom that suits you then test different roms, there is a massive collection of them! Thirdly, Jelly Blast is a banned rom and Jelly Bean based roms for this phone don't exist. Fourth Thing, To tweak CPU a custom Kernal is needed. I can see it is your first time and hopefully you will learn!

Because OP ask For Best
Thread closed
@Sanamy , "Best Rom" threads are frowned upon a XDA. Why? Because what is good for some people, may not be good for you.
Also, best rom threads cause arguments between loyal users of specific roms, and basically have absolutely nothing to do with development, which is what XDA is all about. Not to mention it's just another thread that clogs up the "search" feature.
My advice on making your choice;
1) Read the OP and the last 10 pages of the ROM thread. You'll get an understanding of how the latest release is running.
2) Determine your needs. If you're looking for a gaming rom, then you'll probably want a kernel that's OC'd CPU and GPU.
3) Try a few different ROMs. All devices are NOT the same, and behave differently with different ROMs.
Above all, READ and UNDERSTAND the flashing requirements until you know them well, and understand what you're getting into. Don't be afraid to ask a specific "n00b" question. Most of the folks are here to help, although you will get a couple of "bad apples" who prefer you use the search feature before asking (this is of course, the proper way).
And to some of you "Old Hands", and you know who you are, don;t be so harsh. You also were new to XDA at one time, and probably posted the same (Do I really need to research and post some of your "n00b" posts when you first joined?)
To the other user that actually helped, thanks.
