I recently bought an HTC Hero and the last several days I have been looking to "root" it and put a custom rom on it.
I have the non-cdma, european version of the HTC Hero
Firmware - 1.5 version
Build # - 2.73.405.5
I would like to root it using Windows 7 but I can do it on XP if need be but I have been reading so many different things on you have to have this firmware version or this build number on this operating system so I guess what I am trying to ask is is what would be the best tutorial to follow in order to root my Hero and put a custom rom on it with the info I have given above? If anyone needs any other information just let me know.
Thanks!

Use BTDAG's guide linked in my signature. Read the whole thing through then bookmark it.
And I HIGHLY recommend using an XP machine. I wasted HOURS on my Win7, but worked 1st time on my XP one.
I appreciate the help! I've read through this guide before but I am not sure if I would have to use the "Gold Card Procedure" or not. I'll be using a 1GB Sandisk SD card if that helps.

Just start at the beginning. If it throws up errors then you will need to use the goldcard method. If you do run into problems write down what happens and what error messages you get so guys on here can help out without guessing.
I got it! I installed the Villian rom though. Is there any rom that is better?
For Android 2.1 that comes very highly recommended by a lot of people on here.
Im using MCR3.2 but its 1.5.
But have a play,... swap and change every few days. and do Nandroid backups before you switch.
Have fun.
Im not too impressed with the Villian rom... Its so laggy. Im going to try the MCR3.2 and see how that works out.
You could try mr_bang 2 beta 2, I found it very responsive and 100% functional (no gps or by issues).

Do it, do it, do it.
It was the first and only ROM i've flashed,... I cant see what else I could possibly need from another ROM,... and this new overclock kernal now makes it... well i dont even know what to say, its actually like having an upgrade, its just so fast!!!!
Good to know guys. I appreciate all the help. XDA has been good to me ha
Tell me about it,... I'd still be using a Nokia if it wasn't for this site!!!!
Saw a couple threads on Rooting but wanted to see if someone could post a link to the newest and best method for rooting a TB. I have rooted multiple Evos through ADB and through the 1-click root method. Have flashed Radios through bootloader and Kernals through Recovery and can almost do all of that with my eyes closed on my Evo. Girlfriend just bought a used TB last night and I want to root it but dont want to brick the thing. The Evo is near impossible to brick but saw mention of bricking the TB. Any help is greatly appeciated. I want to put her on a near stock rom be it Froyo or GB.
EDIT: Also what is this MR1 and MR2 that I keep seeing? IF it is rom versions then how do I know which one she has?
I rooted my phone when i bought it the week it came out. Then, I dropped my phone last week and had to get a insurance replacement, which i then also rooted.
I found, out of all the write-ups, the ADB Windows Rooting writeup on androidcentral was by far the best...and didn't require me to install all sorts of extra crap on my computer.
Just follow the steps and root and then pick a rom and follow the steps to install. Don't worry about the verizon produced updates...
PS - I like Gingerremix 2.0 the best...find it in the dev. section of this site.

Go into phone status and check it the same way you would on your Evo.
The easiest rooting method I know of?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1005292
I used this even with the MR2 radio and a GB ROM. It does take a couple updates to certain things like Superuser and CWM Recovery, but those are simple.
MR1 is the first OTA that came for the Bolts, and the MR2 is the upcoming OTA. You for sure dont have the mr2 on there if its not rooted and used. The bricking issues were from a leaked radio. Ive not read anyone bricking their phone otherwise. Well, as long as theyve followed directions anyways. After that, you can browse this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1081930
Tons of choices there for her.
However, if you know ADB(I personally dont), I would just do the ADB method posted here:

Thanks to both of you for the replies. Even bigger thanks to the autoroot method McLabia. I'm going to try that out in just a minute!

Just realize that there have been problems with the auto-root version. It is highly recommended to do it manually.

READ THE PDF IN THE FIRST POST. If you do, you wont have any issues. You may have to do things once or twice, but dont stress it. Sometimes it doesnt take, not sure why, but it wont give your phone any issues as long as you follow the directions he put up.
Im always happy to help someone named Stanglifemike. My uncle that passed away in November was known as Mustang Mike. lol. He rebuilt, restored and fixed Mustangs(64.5-72 ONLY).
I used the Wiki method using ADB. It was my first time using ADB and I had no problems.
Just download the files and follow the instructions line by line.

Thats awesome about your uncle being into Mustangs, I have been for years. Sorry to hear that he passed away.
Havent rooted yet. Working during the day and then teaching automotive at a tech school at night. Gonna do it this weekend. Thanks for asking bro
Yes, I have already read and seen this post:

I rooted my Thunderbolt using revolutionary a couple of days ago, so now I'm looking to install my first ROM.
Looking at the step-by-step guide above, the installation seems very straight-forward. I just have a couple of questions.
The link to the radios/extras is down. What radio should I download, and where can I get it? Do I need to install a new radio to use this ROM?
Thanks.

How would I be able to find out?
Everything I have on my phone is still the same. The only thing I have done was root my phone.
I have the Gingerbread OTA update installed, that has the 2.3.4 version of Android on it.
I don't know if that's adequate information, so please let me know what you need and I'll try my best to give it to you.
I've been flashing for several years, from the Fascinate to the GNex to the Note 2. I am trying to get my Fascinate running JB for my son to use. I just can't seem to get it there and am finally asking for some help. I've tried several guides that have you go from stock GB to root, to Hacksung Build 1, then I get stuck. Nothing I try seems to do anything except cause a bootloop or a stuck Samsung logo. I can't find a guide that would walk through from GB to JB for the Fascinate. I appreciate anyone who can walk me through it.

Thank you. I ordered a faster sdcard, since mine was a class 2. I'll try the instructions on this guide once I get the new card.

Thank you again for pointing me to that guide. I think my problem all along was my class 2 sdcard. I kept getting errors when trying to flash roms and gapps. My class 10 came in today, I followed the guide and it worked flawlessly. I really appreciate you heading me in the right direction.

I used the info from over here and it worked a treat!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2228613
When you have turned on the debugging, you will need to switch to win 8, go to device manager and get windows to search for the asus driver. Do all this while docked of course as that is the usb connection. I also turned off asus sync on the tablet first, don't know if that makes any difference.
Have to say I'm loving the AIO, even more so now the tablet is rooted ?

There's some more info over here, a small but growing forum for us big tablet users
http://www.transformerforums.com/forum/asus-transformer-aio-p1801-forum/
Some folks saying they couldn't get the root to take after updating the firmware, I'm glad you succeeded though, I haven't had to re-root as I already had the original firmware installed and did the root keeper before upgrading last time.
Be interesting to know what firmware you were on before rooting, maybe some others just weren't following the instructions precisely enough?

Yeah the roots definitely taken ad blockaway and super super are definitely working. I hadn't installed any updates as I read what you said about that.
Not sure how I can check the firmware? I will definitely check out that site.
Thanks any more tips

well, finnaly got unlocked P1801-T with TWRP installed)
i've use to about 7 ROM's (from TF300 and TF700) - flashing no problem, loading, launcher - everithing works fine.. except wifi and camera))
so, if anyone of us can make working port from TF700 or TF300, we can easily flash it and test it)
*pardon my english
