Possible to spoof Gingerbread as Honeycomb? - TouchPad General

Is it possible to spoof Gingerbread as Honeycomb to be able to access More tablet optimized apps? Or are there too many system differences for GB to even run HC apps?

The apps would just force close on you, HC apps rely on HC APIs that Gingerbread obviously doesn't have.
ICS is not too far away for us, and then tablet apps ahoy!

Are android apps phone specific?

I hope i wrote this thread in the right place...
What I was wondering is are the apks downloaded from the internet phone specific or can i just run the apks into any android os phone. For instance if i download an apk from the internet, is it only meant for a certain android device or i can run that apk in the hero,g1 and basically anything android
apps arent device dependant, within boundarys. different screen resolutions can cause trouble, so there might be high and low resolution versions of an app. it is scalable, but you know how it is, doesn't always work like planned.
so answer is no, apps are not specific, and yes, this is the right place
Thanks for the reply. Should have asked this earlier but so long as its for the android there shouldnt be any risk of bricking my phone right??(this goes as far as apk are concern)
no, a default APK cannot brick your phone, like from a small puzzle game or something..
well, there maybe some device specific apps, like the HTC battery widget, doesn't work on the Villian 5.1 sprint port, cause the famework is sprint, and the app is made for the Hero, so it simply won't install..
but there shouldn't be any problems, with default games/apps or something
thanks so much...
The only real specifications come down to the OS your running as for example os 1.5 ran differently to OS 2.0 some apps won't run without modifications.
I think google try to reduce these problems as much as they can though.
Some apps have hardware restrictions for example google earth, can be installed on a hero but it wont run.
Other apps won't be visible in the market if your missing something like a camera (won't see camera apps).
But on the whole just install and see if it works

Why apps unavailable?

Why are a ton of Android Apps "not compatible with this device"? it's so annoying...
Is there a way they can be "compatible"
Your options:
1. Install on another device, push the apk to your tablet via email
2. Use a hacked market app (if there is one for the flyer) to download any app
3. Change the preferences file on your Flyer so that market thinks you have a different device (hard mode from #2)

What version of the Market App, would this be? Sorry, I'm new to the HTC Flyer. I just bought it last Friday.
--Thanks
Try Amazon App market for android or Aptoid, they are a bit more flexible on some apps, but you won't find all apps there.
Sometime certain apps are made for certain devices or certain resolutions. The android market being that we run android 2.3. It thinks we have an oversize phone and some apps aren't able to pan out or zoom to a certain factor to where it will take up all of our screen estate. some apps i tried that work on my phone on 2.3 look pixelated and low in detail on my tablet because was mad for a less resolution. Or its just simply not for our device. Just install apps you have on your android and see how they look to you and see if they work. Just takes trial and error.
I've side loaded all the apps that I need/want and so far so good.
I have had the same issue with some apps, I had them on my Galaxy Tab, but not for my Evo view. The cool thing is ASTRO Manager now has a backup in the newest update. If you have another android device, like I have the Evo 3D, so I take the app on there, back it up and from there you can share it via email or bluetooth. I did it last nite to put Handcent and a few others on my View.
Installing HC will fix the problem with "small screens" in apps... but will break other apps - gameloft games and some that are intended to be run @ the original screen ratio

when you rooted, which form of debloating did you choose?

When you are able to access the root, it asks you a bunch of questions. (someone please post the screenshot, I cant find it.) It asks to what extent of debloating do you want. Debloat a little, debloat everything but keep nook features, debloat all nook to make it 100% android tablet.
What did everyone pick? any problems with the 100% android tablet?
Since our Nook is technically my wife's and she likes the Nook stock setup, I would choose no debloating, then use Ti Backup to remove only what I don't want.
If it were mine, I would do a full debloat and have an Android tab...
I chose the debloat that took out the second most information. First root ever for me, went fairly well. In hindsight, I wish I chose the "debloat-to-the-max" option.
Also I need to do more research, but I don't want my NT to run a launcher...I want a true, complete Honeycomb (ICS when available) tablet.
Yes, I would like to see some comments on that too.
For example, the Nook comes with an installed app for Pandora. Works fine. Now I know that I can install an "ad free" version but the ads are tiny and since I'm only listening it doesn't matter.
Someone please correct me if I I am missing the point.
I am rooted and have installed a bbunch of apps including alternate readers but I have not uninstalled anything.

I chose the full debloat the first time, but decided that it was potentially too much, and chose to not debloat at all the second time.
After a few hours of bricking, bootlooping and rerooting, I've eventually settled on the "standard" debloat, a.k.a. option 1, where it takes out the trivial stuff. I think I would be happier with all the rest of the B&N apps gone (it's not like I have money to go and buy anything on them), but that's easy enough to fix with root.
I chose to not debloat as those BN apps not really bother me.
I chose the full debloating option. Everything works fine for me as I don't use any B&N content.

When you say Nook's stock setup do you mean the stock OS "launcher" Are you able to see the Android Market and android apps in the stock Nook Tablet OS app view?
I ask b/c my first go at I installed the honeycomb launcher and my girl didn't like this. She wanted the Nook to look the same but just have the android market app/icon alongside the nook app store icon. And any apps she downloads from the Android Market will show up in the stock nook app view. Is this how your setup works?
I don't debloat since I use mine as a book reader. For me it is too small for browsing and video, I use my transformer for those tasks.

I replied to your PM, but in short, no, side loaded Apps and Apps DLed from Android Market and Amazon App Market do not show up in the Nook "Library" so the can not be added the stock Nook home pages. I have some ideas to try, but it might be a few more days before my wife lets me experiment again!
I originally rooted about 3 weeks ago before debloating. Last night I re-rooted and choose the "standard" debloat, a.k.a. option 1, as that still gives me access to the B&N store as I do like to read and occasionally buy a book from there when I can't check it out from the library using Overdrive.

I rooted, minimal debloat (buhbye netflix / pandora, kept the reader stuff. I love this tablet more than any gadget I own.
CAPSLOCK IS HOW I FEEL INSIDE
I used Media de-bloat (Pandora, Netflix) but those apps are still installed on my NT
I tried all of the methods and ended up with max debloat.
I didn't debloat, but use Indirect's post on debloater, and manually uninstall each on titanium backup. You can probably uninstall a few more if you like, ie google talk, cartalk, and some various services that you don't think you need. I do notice that once you debloat, your owner/account name will show "Unavailable", fyi.
I chose option 2. Press enter to continue. Any other to abort. Gotta love the hackers.
No de-bloat. Just rooted and blocked with gapps and every app from my phone that made sense. Used the backup on phone and restore on nook with Titanium.
No de-bloat, as I want the standard Nook setup with the freedom to download what I want. I used the Nook Color App Manager and now have all my 3rd party apps on my Nook home screen. I'm thinking of scraping the Homecatcher program, since I can easily launch the Go Launcher EX from my homescreen.

Spoof another (non-rooted) device to install apps?

I have a rooted tablet (Acer Iconia One 8 B1-810) and wanted a way of accessing all apps (eg. Monese banking app) as it's my only android device. Is there a way of faking/spoofing which phone/device it appears as to Play store/apps? Is there an alternative to market helper which I read is no longer being developed? Will a BuildProp Editor reliably solve these problems? If so which is best?
Also is there a reliable/simple way of hiding/temporarily disabling root for apps that detect it?
Bump?

Does it still make sense to root or are too many apps (eg banking) incompatible now?

In the early days of Android, I always rooted my phones.
Then, the combination of:
more functionalities no longer requiring root (at the beginning you needed it to take screenshots and to enable bluetooth on flight mode, for instance) , and
more and more apps not working with root (especially banking apps)
have meant I stopped rooting my phones a while ago.
What are your views and experiences? What apps do you find incompatible with root? How do you handle that?
My concern is that, even if I could confirm that my banking apps work with a rooted version of my phone now, I could never have any guarantee that a future app update won't be incompatible.
