My phone spends more time in "screen off" state at 384mhz than it does in "deep sleep" overnight. I checked BetterBatteryStats and noticed that msm_otg is on 40% of the time. could this be the culprit or does the phone not normally go into deep sleep?
this is also the one on top of the stats on my phone. what does this msm_otg do anyway?

See here...its just that it lies in the kernel layer of our phones.

Did you ever figure this out? I'm running stock JellyBean on my Sprint Galaxy S III and it just started happening seemingly out of nowhere.
I found this post in the BetterBatteryStats thread.
Which ROM and kernel are you running?

I've never used a custom ROM or kernel. It's stock everything.
From settings-> about:
Android version: 4.1.1
Baseband version: L710VPBLJ7
Kernel version: 3.0.31-329968 [email protected] #1 SMP PREEMPT Tue Oct 16 22:37:51 KST 2012
Build number: JRO03L.L710VPBLJ7
Hardware version: L710.14
If it's truly being caused by OTG host support your SGS3 has that built-in, but it is only available with custom kernels on the Evo 3D. The description of the driver seems to indicate that it may be more generically related to USB operations.

Thanks for the help. It seems too coincidental that this just happened at the same time that I upgraded from ICS to JB and most other people don't have battery issues since upgrading. Been trying to figure out other things, but to no avail. I wish there was a way to disable OTG host support to see if that is indeed causing it.

Sorry for being a noob (new to the world of android)
I've followed and re-read (at least 3x) the guide to flash the kernel, watched the video (twice) and "flashed" the kernel the through these processes more than 10 times.
I've tried both the v2 and v3 versions of the easy kernel flasher and have tried to flash the kernel after a full wipe.
I still cannot seem to have the kernel flashed.
I've done many searches, so I hope its okay for me to ask what I may be doing wrong. On the forums, i see that the latest kernel from xboarder should say (on the 2nd line) "[email protected]" or something but this is still what my kernel says:
Kernel version:
2.6.35.13-g52e85af
[email protected] #1
SMP PREEMPT Wed Oct 26 21:56:13 CST 2011
I also have 1 more question: what does CRT on and CRT off mean?

CRT on and off gives it a look like an old analog television set going on and off. When you flash a new kernel, you should flash it twice and restart your phone a twice after flashing it. That seems to fix it for most people.
flash this using cwm and you should be good to go.

Like I said, flash twice, restart twice. Glad you're good to go.
I too am having issues with getting a kernel flashed - Using Xboarder's Beastmod 2.2 kernel, but it still shows up from [email protected]
My procedure for doing it was:
reboot into bootloader, choose fastboot, fastboot flash boot boot.img, reboot bootloader, fastboot flash boot boot.img, then reboot twice. (Never booting into the android system)
Still stuck with the stock HTC kernel.
Just to clarify: I've got beastmod working right now apparently too, so I don't know exactly what's going on. I'm assuming that the kernel is necessary for it to work, but apparently I'm still on stock HTC kernel.
- I've done the HTCDev bootloader unlock. I've installed latest CWM too. Looking for guidance on wtf is happening. (Also, if it matters - WIND Amaze, HBoot 1.90.0008, S-ON.)

I can't seem to download any of the kernels from the www.multiuploads.com link? Can someone help me here?
Also, if I'm trying to install the QuikSense v2.1 Rom, can I use either the kernel 2.1.0 (by Xboarder) or the faux123 one? My main goal is to be able to wifi hotspot without Tmobile's interference.
Many thanks in advance.
IDK if anyone has had this issue before, but I purchased a GT-I9300 and it is missing all the samsung apps (all the S-Apps and other things that make the S3 the S3). I called Samsung and told them what happened, and they wanted to shaft me with $50. Anybody got any idea what I can do for this? Everything else works fine. I am going to try saywhatt's apps to see if I can get all the stuff I am missing on the phone in. Just in case anyone else has an idea as to what to do in my case.

Like I said before, tried googling & I'm double checking that I am taking the correct steps to put the right stuff on there on here. I'm currently trying to fish out the .apk's I may need to install but I need to look through the manual to see what I am missing. I previously had a G2X which I managed to get to CM 10 thanks to the wizards here, but I just got this phone, and it seems to be running ICS. It just doesn't have as many apps as it should out of the box.
Another thing I think may be worthy of noting is that it has "Samsung Apps" in the home screen but it says it does not install.
Thanks again for the swift responses.

This is knock off device and not a real S3 The reason they are not there is that most likely the device doesnt have the hardware to support it. Thos device normally come with around 500 mb of ram and that is not even close to enough to run the samsung apps. Mix in that 4.1.9 is not an official build of android so you most likely will have issues with google based apps.

Once Samsung gets it they will return it to you unaltered. The min they see it is a knock off device they will refuse to do anything with it.
As for the IMEI that is easily faked and knock offs are known to use copied IMEI numbers to fool the buyers into thinking it is legit. If I were you I would toss it on Ebay and get another device.
Too many people looking for a cheap high end device and they end up with a POS that is equal to a toaster. Please make sure you know what you are buying before you buy it. You will find almost no help/support/or anything for those devices anywhere.
I got a HTC one M8, which was rooted and has a custom ROM with the following specs
Android Version: 4.4.4
Baseband Version: 1.12.21331931.LA21G_20.28A.4145.00L
Kernel Version: [email protected] #11 Sun Jun 29 11:47:06 PDT 2014
Build Number SkyDragon GPE V3.0.1
Questions are:
1. Is this a stable version of Skydragon ROM?
2. At times the camera app crashes. is this a known issue? Do i need to update this ROM to a newer version? (Is there a newer version available?)
3. Launching the OTA updater app gives me a "Error Fetching update info: Invalid ROM (SkyDragonGpe-3.0.1) and device(htc_m8) combo. Is this a known issue as well?
I am not able to find the details regarding the build elsewhere. The phone was rooted, (I was unaware of this when i bought the phone). Any insights would be appreciated.

Didn't mean to thank the post. If you don't like how the rom is performing then try another. That's the beauty of being rooted. If you want to keep a Google play edition rom, try sinless. There are several versions depending on what you want. Or you could flash a RUU and return to stock unrooted.

Do you mean you can't find the ROM thread? If so, here it is: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2706391
You can search the thread to see if there is any mention of camera issues (I did a quick look, and didn't see anything jump out at me). Or just flash another ROM as previously suggested, to see if that fixes the camera issue.

I would complain to the seller, even if you are okay with it being modded, rooted, etc. I would also mention the camera issue, in the event you can't fix it in software and its a hardware issue (in which you should seek to get a refund, exchange, etc.).
The seller not informing you the phone is modded, rooted, etc. is at a minimum a breach of common sense; at most its deceptive.
Also, this thread should have been posted in Q&A, so I've notified the mods to move it.
Theoretically, what would happen if I tried to flash a Nexus 9 5.1.1 image to my Apex TM785CH tablet with Kitkat? I'm 99% sure it would brick although it might just work. If this is not possible, is there any way to get 5.1.1 on my device? Are there any universal Lollipop images? The manufacturer has not released any updates for the device.
Thanks
You would brick. Each device has to have a kernel built just for that device. You could try and make an Aosp based rom if you had kernel source for the device.

That may be the best option, however I wouldn't know where to start with making a rom. I don't know if this information is worth anything:
Settings -> About Tablet
Model: TM785CH

IFWI Version: F9.EE
Kernel Version: 3.10.20, Mon, June 16 15:15:25 CST 2014
Build Number: V1.00_20140616
Your best bet would be to find out if the OEM released the kernel source. Just hope the device is not a Chinese device.

So their customer service responded and basically said that the device hardware is only compatible with Android 4.4 and there will be no future updates.
I think this is the end of the road as nobody makes custom roms for this device.
