Here are some frequently asked questions about the G-Tablet. Where there are specific answers based on ROM, the ROM is listed prior to the answer.
How do I install Clockworkmod?
See Step 1 of THIS POST
OR watch THIS VIDEO
How do I boot into Clockworkmod?
With the device completely off (and not asleep/suspended), press the + volume button and the power button until the device turns on. If it is successfully booting into Clockworkmod, you will see a message at the top left of the screen saying booting recovery image.
How do I perform a wipe data/factory reset?
With Clockworkmod, select the third option in the menu "wipe data/factory reset" and press the Home key (second button down on the right side of the gTablet in landscape view). Then, confirm wipe by selecting "Yes - wipe data/factory reset" and press the Home key again.
How do I clear the cache?
With Clockworkmod, select the fourth option in the menu "wipe cache partition" and press the Home key (second button down on the right side of the gTablet in landscape view). Then, confirm wipe by selecting "Yes - Wipe Cache" and press the Home key again.
How do I install VEGAn-TAB/TnT Lite/Cyanogenmod?
See the very first post of THIS THREAD
Where can I find the different ROMs for the G-Tablet?
1) Stock by Viewsonic
2) Stock + Performance Pack by rothnic
3) Tnt Lite 4.1 by Roebeet
4) VEGAn-TAB beta 5.1 by gojimi, Roebeet and Rothic
5) Zpad Clean 3.0 by rothnic
6) CyanogenMod 6.1 Beta4 by bekriebel
7) CyanogenMod 7.0 RC0 beta3 by bittrix
8) Tnt G-Harmony-Gingerbread Elements by tjohnsonjr
9) Plus the great kernel enhancement by clemsyn.
Keyboard and Mouse Support
VEGAn-TAB: Yes; supports an external keyboard and mouse, but it is picky. I have tested three keyboards; only one worked (MS Natural Keyboard). The MS Arc and an old Compaq keyboard did not. All mouses tested worked fine (both wireless and wired).
TnT-Lite: In testing; will update when testing complete.
Cyanogenmod 6.1b4: Yes; According to iammuze, keyboard and mouse both work.
Wallpaper blurry
Some have pointed to applications that can possibly fix this (Wallpaper Set & Save, MultiPicture Live Wallpaper) but I have had limited success with both of these. A bit of experimenting with different wallpapers will yield a satisfactory wallpaper image until this is cleared up at a later time.
Screen resolution in landscape (horizontal) mode
1024 x 600. Remember that if you're making wallpaper, when using the G-Tab in portrait mode (vertically) will make the wallpaper shrink and there will be black bars on top and below the image. Best image size: 1024 x 1024.
How do I get a fully working Marketplace?
See Step 3 of THIS POST
Is there a difference between the marketplace that comes with most G-Tablet ROM builds or the new "improved" market?
The only difference is the appearance. In functionality, it is the same. The market hack is still required for the new improved marketplace (and reports are that it often takes more tries to make work than the standard market).
Problems with acore FC's
The problem is a corrupt contacts sqlite database. As the referenced post says, you'll be able to tell if thats the problem when there is a .db-journal file in the folder. The folder is /data/data/com.android.providers.contacts/databases/ *Note* this is not the data folder in sdcard, but the data folder in root (/).
Just delete the databases folder in /data/data/com.android.providers.contacts and restart. The contacts database will be rebuilt and re-synced.
Also, see THIS THREAD/FAQ
Why do I keep seeing repartitioning as a solution to install problems?
Because Viewsonic didn't partition the G-Tablets in a way that Android likes to live on. By repartitioning, Android feels happier and many issues/problems are resolved.
What is the recommended repartition ratio?
2GB/0MB is STRONGLY recommended for TnT Lite 3.00+
2GB/256MB is considered the default setup
4GB/256MB is used by many people, but see the aforementioned caveat regarding TnT Lite.
Why won't one of the devs answer my question/post?
Because they:
1. Have day jobs.
2. Are busy coding and fixing the next release of VEGAn-TAB.
3. Have seen your question 23 times already in this thread: the search function is your friend.
4. Are not being paid to read forums and go through 100's of posts, many of which ask the same question (although they do this out of the kindness of their hearts thankfully!!!).
Who are the devs working on the G-Tablet
VEGAn-TAB: Gojimi, Rothnic, and Roebeet
TnT-Lite: Roebeet
Cyanogenmod 6.1b4: bekriebel
I can't get X to work on my G-Tab. Can you fix it? (where x = desired ROM)
Maybe. Maybe not. Currently, VEGAn-TAB is in Beta which means that it's still in testing. While it may be stable and usable for most people, it doesn't mean that it will be completely stable for you. If you have problems, post them and be happy knowing that you're helping the community at-large. Some problems may not be reproducible, however. In that case, it may be a matter of a corrupt install, conflict with previous install, cache or data issue, etc.
Do the dev's accept donations for their work?
Some do; others don't. If you see a donate button on their profile, feel free. If not, they don't accept them.
How to get the stock VEGAn-TAB wallpaper without the letters?
See attached image in 1024 x 1024.
More Advanced Questions.
Can the startup "Viewsonic Birds" or "gTablet" screens be changed?
Yes they can. Follow the instructions in THIS POST.

These were grabbed from over-the-air updates. They are full recovery images that wipes everything except the user data.
To use this with a vanilla recovery, you need to rename the file to update.zip, copy it to the root of /sdcard, and also create a recovery folder with a file called "command" (see the 1.00 release for that file). When you run recovery, the command file will direct recovery to run the update.zip to update the system.

Great FAQ!
"Why won't one of the devs answer my question/post?" is so true. I scan this forum daily, but there is no way to keep up with all the questions that pop up (especially once it's back more than 2 pages). If you really need me, PM me - at least I'll eventually see the question. But, keep in mind that I get more PM's than you might realize, so it could take me some time to respond.
@ehunyadi as Robeet said Great FAQ. This will definitely help alot of people.
Now I just need to find free time at home to test out the vegan ROM.
Maybe this should be a sticky?

Thanks, guys.
I tried to change the title of this thread to encompass all flavors of G-Tab ROMs but I think only a mod can do that.
I am going to start including info about all the different ROMs in here as well to help keep things simple in regards to finding the FAQ's in one place. This SHOULD help reduce the questions a bit. At least that's my hope.
Awesome job! Thank you so much for this! I posted your video of VEGAn-TAB on our new ROM homepage. Check it out @ HTTP://vegantab.gojimi.com.

Very nice site!!!
Any chance of your sending me either the font or the artwork you used for the words VEGAn-TAB? I'd like to try some things with it on my G-Tab.
Thanks for posting my video!

Sure. I can put that in here. Give me some time; I'm having a busy day at work today.
ehunyadi,
I forgot about this thread, but you may want to see my thread up higher about a site I found which offers a .pdf of the Advent Vega manual and some software for those capable of working with it.
The manual explains operation of much of the ROM interface.

OK, I am a n00b to the Gtab scene. I do read the first post 99.9% of the time, but when the first post leads me to an incorrect first post about how to install, I must make mention of that fact. The first post mentioned does not have any instructions for installing. Is there a step by step tutorial for this to be found?
TIA ..... HTR
I see you added the link to the default wallpaper without the branding but what is the location of the default Vegan wallpaper or at least a link to it? I changed my wallpaper and now would like to revert but do not know the location. Thanks a lot.

Once you change it from the default, there's no known way to go back right now.
Edited to add: You can always use the image an image that is identical to what VEGAn-TAB comes with stock, but this has to be downloaded and selected from gallery/filesystem vs going back to the default wallpaper.

Good point; I'll fix that link.
As for a step-by-step, you can view THIS VIDEO that takes you through the steps of installing with Clockworkmod. Ignore the fact that it already has an OS on the G-Tab; you can do this with a fresh install as well.
Also, see THIS THREAD for step-by-step instructions. I'll fix the first post in the thread to reflect the change.
Here is the default Vegan wallpaper:
Thanks Trist-Wolf!!!
Updated to encompass ALL ROM flavors. If one is missing, or if you have useful information that you would like to see in the FAQ, please post or PM me directly.

Yes, it's better. Although the Touchpad 4G suppport and "verbose booting"
for native ports (ubuntu, arch, etc.) may not interest you, it does have other
improvements (better error handling, etc).
0.3.5 also fixes the extra splash screen that leoisright has put into XRON build. With builds pre-0.3.5 I was getting a screen size error.

Interesting, I have one 2 devices that use 0.3.5 and one 0.3.3
all use XRON2.8 and I have no problems.
I presume that I can re-flush to 0.3.5 using ACME and include only the moboot file? (I like to keep the Android install as is)
Thanks

Yeah, just put the moboot 0.3.5 file alone in the cminstall folder and run ACMEinstaller... it won't overwrite anything else. Just did mine the other day.
I have Xron-ified vB2.9.1 rom installed on my touchpad, when it goes from Moboot to Cyanogenmod there is a quick error message that says the splash screen is too large for the display area, then it goes on to boot normally with the Cyanogenmod loading screen, followed by the colored flipping tiles screen and on to the home screen. This error seems to have no effect on the boot or the performance, but I just wanted to throw it out there. I've had this error on vB2.8 and vB2.9 versions of the rom.
Otherwise, I have no major issues and no complaints. I have been fortunate with these flashes and have somehow avoided all of the major issues I have been reading about.
Thanks guys and keep up the great work!
Gotta update Moboot!

I have been looking for "how" to update moboot.
First... for those who have not been back to Acme Installer since your initial install... you will need it again. Every post I saw just said update moboot... I had CWM on the brain.... I have many pc's, so had to figure out which one had the Palm sdk installed on it... it also had the acmeinstall tool. You will need both of those.
Second. I went to the above site with my touch pad. Downloaded the file. then used my file manager to move the moboot_0.3.5.zip file to my old cminstall folder.
Third step. On my XP computer I opened a CMD prompt as admin and changed to the directory where the palm sdk was installed. I could see the acme installer in there.
Fourth - Shut off touch pad, plugged the USB cable into the pc
Step 5 - Fired up the touchpad and chose Webos recovery mode from the list. Did not have to hold the volume anymore which was pretty cool.
Last but not least - Rejoice as moboot gets rewritten, sys reboots, and I have a cool Xron logo where the old image does not fit error used to be. =)
If there is a better way than this please share. Worked for me, but who knows...
Forgot to add this line.
novacom boot mem:// < ACMEInstaller
that is what you type at the dos prompt
Just a heads up... Had to re-use this trick a 2nd time today. Decided to update to 3.0.5 of web os. It eliminated moboot.
It was not too tough to fix though. I added a few dual pane file manager in web os. Downloaded moboot again and put it in the cminstall folder.
shut down,
rebooted holding the power and volume up.
the rest was the same as above.
Cannot remember the file manager... Sorry. It was free though. Had what reminded me of a major's rank in the center of it...
I tracked down the file manager I used. It is Tegi's Commander. Took me a second to figure out how to move the file... I tried to just drag it, but it was a long press gig.

Had you updated moboot before updating WebOS? As of the moboot update 0.3.4 that shouldn't happen, WebOS updates should not remove moboot (Source: JCSullins). I updated my WebOS to 3.0.5 and moboot remained untouched!!
Also as prev stated 0.3.5 will remove splash-screen size error!!
thanks for the information. I was actually able to figure it out on my own, and thankfully I did exactly what you guys suggested. For anyone else reading this, the instructions above work brilliantly! Thank you guys for your help and your quick responses and please excuse my delayed replies.

But you've done some great work and been willing to share it with folks here. The video tutorials just being the latest example.

Crobat's Guide to Preware, Alpha/Beta Feeds and Kernels!
Why hello there! I felt that its time for me to give back to this wonderful community, but I can't code for sh*t, so I'm sorry, I can't make a rom or app for you guys. Instead, I present to you this tutorial! This is a simple, easy to follow tutorial on using Preware and other goodies for your TouchPad running WebOS.
This is a work in progress! So expect more soon.
Stuff to add:
-Alpha/Beta feeds for preware
-Kernels and Overclocking
-Pictures
-FAQ
-Links and Credits
So, first and foremost...
What the heck is Preware?!
preware.org said:
Preware is a homebrew package management application for your HP webOS device.

Click to collapse
To put it simply, Preware allows you to install several useful homebrew packages for your TouchPad, which includes apps, patches, kernels and so on. For those who've done jailbreaking for an iOS device before, think Preware as Cydia, but for WebOS.
How do I get Preware?
All right, it might get a little tricky for some, but follow closely and it will be a breeze.
First, you're going to want to get your TouchPad into Developer Mode. To do this, get to Just Type and key in either of the following: "upupdowndownleftrightleftrightbastart" OR "webos20090606" (without the quotes) and you will see the option to launch Developer Mode. If you're asked for a password, LEAVE IT BLANK! I can't stress this enough. Should you enter a password, the tab will go crazy and you will have to reset it using WebOS Doctor. So don't. Once you're in, turn Developer Mode On.
Next you will want to download WebOS Quick Install. Its a .jar program that can install various items for your TouchPad.
Download it here (Credits to Jason Robitalle from WebOS nation)
Now, I'm assuming that you have Java and the Novacom drivers installed on your computer. You are going to need them to run Quick Install. To get Novacom, just get your device into HP recovery mode and link it up to your computer. It should immediately begin installing.
Next, let your TouchPad boot normally, and then connect it to your PC, but do not let it connect as a USB Drive! Just press close when the prompt pops up on the TouchPad. Now run Quick Install on the computer.
Once you're in Quick Install, click on the globe icon on the left. A window will pop up with various items available for download. On the search bar, type in 'Preware' and click 'Install'.
This is the last step! Now, on your TouchPad, open up the App Menu and look for Preware in the downloads tab. If its there, congratulations! You've successfully installed Preware for your TouchPad. Now you can download and install whatever goodies you want to make it beautiful.
Installing stuff using Preware
Installing things from Preware is a simple affair. After launching the app, you can either use the search feature if you know the name of the app or whatever you're looking for. If not, go to 'Available Packages' and you will be able to browse for whatever you want from a list.
What are Alpha & Beta Feeds?
All the homebrew packages that appear on Preware are there because of feeds. Feeds are, in a way, carrying the information of the packages. Preware is basically the 'centre' where all the packages from the various feeds are displayed. Therefore, without feeds, Preware will show nothing at all. Try and think of eBay. The website represents Preware, whereas the sellers represent the feeds.
So, as the name implies, Alpha and Beta feeds are feeds that contain packages that are still in early development and are for testing. Hence, they are collectively called testing feeds. Alpha packages are highly unstable and could potentially damage your device. Beta packages are more stable, almost ready for use, but with some problems here and there. However, this does not mean that Beta packages are 100% safe to install, so do so at your own risk.
How do I enable/disable Alpha & Beta Feeds?
Due to restrictions I'm not allowed to post instructions here. All the instructions you need can be found here.
Please read their rules carefully before doing anything.
One more thing. Some of the steps require you to access the Linux command line. To do so, simply launch WebOS Quick Install, go to Tools, then Linux Commandline.
To choose which feeds you want to access in Preware, go to Preware>Manage Feeds. From there, you can turn the feeds on/off.
One Last Thing...
I've tried my best to read all the forum rules and searched for other threads to ensure that I'm not posting something that's been done to death. But if I really missed a thread with the exact same topic, then, well, darn! Please get the mods to close this thread.
