I was noticing a weak wifi signal earlier today in a room where my computer has full strength. I downloaded 'Wifi Analyzer' to see if I was getting interference from some other source. What I am seeing in Wifi Analyzer is a signal strength of -60dB with nothing else on my channel. The 'About Phone' section of Settings is telling me the signal strength is -97dB, 8asu.
Does anyone know why I would be getting two separate readings? I am assuming the app and settings use the same antenna, so are the two different pieces of software interpreting the signal strength differently, or do I have something else going on here?
Have no idea on an answer about the apps, but would you by chance be using a d30 case on your phone? Just asking cuz i kno the d30 case effects wifi signal greatly.

I don't believe that I have a D30 case, however it is a silicone-type soft case.
That being said, I was reading on here about the case interference prior to this post and the signal strength was measured out of the case, laying flat on the couch for both measurements.
I also just checked the wife's Amaze, and the settings menu again told me -97dB from the same spot.
I just installed inSSIDer 2.0 on my laptop. It is also saying -60 to -57dB.
This is pretty crappy if for some reason the GB software kills the raw signal that the antenna is picking up.

Thank you. I really thought it was just the phone. I don't know why I never thought about taking off the case. Does anyone know why having the case on makes such a difference?

Have you tried the fix someone posted about wifi when having a case on?
And oddly I can't use the search function.
It didn't matter if case was on or not. Both phones has the same reading at the same location, with or without cases.
Could anyone try to duplicate my test with a WiFi analyzer and compare what it says with what the phone says?

As soon as I started using ROMs like Gingivitis 1.0 and Das BAMF pr 4 (and now pr 5 Final) my awesome 30/mbps speeds became almost nothing. I can't hardly get 1X at work. Best case I'm doing 22mpbs good area and worst case I've got no internet at all.
It's the price you pay for using a ROM and not waiting for the official OTA update.
My data connection is working fine.
But then again I am using stock debloat.

+1 This. Make sure the cover is snapped on all the way.
This is why I posted a thread about replacing battery covers. There's times I get no coverage at all, times i only get 3g in high coverage 4G areas,etc...

So I have been using this extensively, I can say that it does slightly improve WiFi connectivity. It is quicker and usually connects with no problem, but sometimes it seems to not work at all for whatever reason.
Anyone else have the same experience?
I have a $300 D-link router, with excellent connection. Its used for gaming, and my Wifi, has no problem connecting even after sleep mode. Your routers are probally giving out weak signals. I've had no problems with wifi connectivity since using CM7.

I was wondering if there was any way to increase the power of the radio to get better signal? Or any other way to get better signal. I spend most of my time at home here in my basement and I get very poor signal down here, most of the time I get 1 bar or no signal at all. I was wondering what tips and tricks people used to increase their signal, and if there was any way I can do this in the software of the phone itself. I have my phone plugged in down here so increased battery drain is not really an issue.
It would be really awesome if there was some type of change that I could throw into a Tasker profile and activate with an NFC sticker so I can just scan the sticker and boost my signal! (Also, I'm on a Verizon S3)
Maybe I'm dreaming, but it would be really awesome if some way to boost my signal like this existed!
Thanks so much!
Buy one of those verizon signal booster units? Wait for an updated radio that can do more with less?
Or use your home wifi and a voip calling solution

Yes, I think you are dreaming.
You might explore hardware signal boosters sold by Wilson Electronics. The basic configuration is an exterior antenna, an internal antenna and a two-way amplifier in between. Not free, though.
If you have WiFi, another option is getting whaterver Verizon calls their femtocell. It basically is a mini-tower inside your home, and your WiFi provides the backhaul.

I think those "booster" apps are scams at best. They probably just toggle your phone's settings to provide a placebo effect.
If you check their permissions, which invariably include "full Internet access" and a variety of privileges to explore local stuff on the phone, it's pretty obvious that the real intent is to rape your phone's privacy and upload the data to sleazy marketers, hackers, or worse. Do you really want to provide your phone connection log and location to some stranger?

Wow. That's rude and not helpful.
Chances are he hasn't even finished college yet or is still in high school. Or his office could be in his basement in his own house. There are so many other reasons he could be in his basement most of the time... He never even said he lives in the basement, just is there a lot...
OP - I'm not sure if there's any way you can boost the signal using software. If there was, I'm sure those enhancements would have already been implemented. If you have internet at home, you can buy a device from your carrier (every carrier calls it something different) that uses your internet as "cell tower".
Another solution would be to use google voice + groove IP so all your text messages and calls are routed through WiFi instead of the carrier.

but seriously, I wish there was some setting that would improve the radio. I'd trade 1/2 my battery life for better signal. That would still leave me with an all day charge.

The comments above include a link to a similar product from Verizon, which the OP said he uses. Not very fast, though. It doesn't even support EVDO (3G) data speeds. And LTE service is out of the question.

The unfortunate thing is Samsung has very weak radios. I know they have improved through out the years. But they still have have to work on improving their RF. I lose signal on my S3 in bad reception areas, whereas on my BlackBerry 9900 I still get HSPA.

I have the same problem with wifi. Alright range, but speed is very low. I fixed it by opening it up and putting tinfoil between the screen and wifi PCB's.
For the typing issue, try disabling the touchpad using one of the buttons at the very top of the keyboard.

To begin with I do not know how the TF201 calculates signal strength. There are 2 factors that have to be addressed the signal strength (how loud you can shout) and the signal quality (how clear are your words). So a drunk can sing as loud as he can but nobody knows what
he's singing so he sings again. In other words if the signal quality is poor the data gets requested again and again.
And I haven't mentioned TF201 transmissions also are part of the "signal"

The signal on the signal bar? If that's it it isn't really dropping completely, unless it shows No Service. AOSP just measures and show the signal differently than Touchwiz.

Well it does drop. Because signal bars becomes empty (if that makes sense). If I try to go to a webpage while it's like that, it cant load the page. Mind you, the signal comes back in 5-10 seconds or so, so it's not a huge deal. Just curious if there is a fix by chance or something I'm just missing.

My phone rarely show the service correctly in the Notification Bar (very low 4G signal and it doesn't show up but works perfectly), the accepted way to measure your signal in in About Phone/Status.
It sounds like you just have spotty coverage or low coverage and it becomes a little worse on AOSP.
No matter how many times it is said that AOSP reads/displays the signal differently for me it is actually a little worse on AOSP. When I say worse I usually have 3 bars of 4G and full 3G, no out of service time, and the measurements in the About Phone/Status menu are generally a bit better on TW. With AOSP I have 1 bar of 4G and 2 of 3G, 10-15% out of service time, and lower readings in the menu.
