Can the original owner clear lost/stolen ESN? - HTC EVO 3D

Ok. So I got scammed out of $200 for an Evo 3D. Bad ESN, and it's reported lost or stolen. I can sell the phone to my friend, for $150, so I guess I'll be out $50, but it'll be for a good cause.
Anyways, I called the number that was attached to the phone and found the original owner and stuff. Apparently she already has her replacement and all. Now, if I call Sprint, since I know the store can't do much, is there ANY way they can release the bad ESN? I mean, the phone is no longer lost. Or is it too late because she has her replacement.
Right now I have a high-tech media device. I mean, I would just get a low-class 4G Sprint phone (because I REFUSE to use Sprint 3G), and just tether and use the Evo 3D, sell it to my friend on Cricket, or try my above method. Either way, it's a lesson learned. -_-
Let this be a word to people. Before anything, tell them to turn on the phone. If they refuse, don't buy it. Simple as that. If they turn it on, go to
About Phone => Phone Identity
If an account is attached, don't get it. NO MATTER WHAT. *sigh*

Can only be flashed to another carrier now, unless you edit the ESn to put back on Sprint. But basically they will tell you that phone belongs to Assurion now, the insurance company.

Ah!! I see. Since she already has her replacement, she was supposed to technically send it in. Ok. Well that ESN part is illegal... and so impossible for me to grasp.
Guess I'm stuck with selling it to my friend.
OH!! What about Google Voice!? Would I be able to use Google Voice? Or does Google Voice use your talk data and not your internet data?
I mean, I can always link my phone number to Google Voice, and then... No. I think if I use this Evo 3D, Google Voice will use the Evo 3D to call, but it won't be able to call. Dugh!!
Why does changing the ESN have to be illegal? *sigh* Oh well...

I used to work for sprint and it depends how the phone was flag...if it's flag as stolen the original owner can call and they can remove the flag but if the phone is flag as fraud it's going to take a long time to get the esn fix...if the phone was reported as stolen with assurion then the esn is not worth anything...

Thanks, but I'm going with selling it for about $200 obo to my friend or some subscriber on Cricket. I found this YouTube Video on how to manually flash your phone to Cricket. So yea. I think I can get my money back. And with Beat's By Dre installed, rooted, and WiFi Tether I may be able to make the phone seem appealing enough to some people.

I Found a Sprint HTC Touch Pro

I think i found a Spring HTC Touch Pro, is their anyway to use a sim card with this? Or is their anways to remove the current sprint service on it so i can sell it to someone and they can use it with their own sprint service?
No. Return it to the owner and don't be an ass.
You can call Sprint and have them track down the owner. I think Sprint will give you a shipping address where you can send it, so they can return it to whoever owns it.
Like the previous poster said - don't be an ass, do what you can to return it.
It is of NO use to you, the ESN is linked to the subscriber, and will be marked as "lost or stolen" so there is absolutely nothing you can ever do with the device.
to elaberate a little bit more. your probubly used to at&t or t mobile that uses gsm (sim cards). verizon, altell, sprint, and others use cdma (no sim cards). each phone has it's own serial number (ESN). when someone reports that they lost there phone, that ESN is flaged and the phone becomes a paper waight. there's nothing you can do and no way to use it. my advice is to gain some karmi points and try your best to return it to the owner.
Okay, well what if i can't return it? Anyway to change the ESN?
Any way to kick SeanWhite out of the forum?

No cell phone company is going to touch a phone reported lost or stolen. You could either return it or have a pretty paperweight.
Return the phone to the owner. Call Sprint or go to an Sprint store.
P.S. At least keep the battery so you could have an extra battery around. LOL!!
J/K
case is allready closed in a sort of way.. the phone should be given back.. the phone is locked to the owner and there is nothing to be done unless you make the guys in sprint do illegal stuff for you but i doubt they would... i suggest you to give it back, who knows.. you might get a finders reward for it...
I found a sprint phone before, a simple *2 and the representative will give you an address. The guy ended up giving me $100 reward in the mail. Be nice, Return it!!!
I had my cell phone stolen on a job site a year or so back. It was probably SeanWhite...
Why are you even thinking about it??? Contact Sprint. Return it to whomever it belongs to!
Just imagine what you would want to happen if you had lost that phone and someone had found it. It's an expensive phone, and its worth a lot to the original owner. To you, its a paperweight, maybe an mp3 player. To you maximum value is about 20 bux at most considering you use it for mp3 player if you don't return it.
A friend of mine left his phone in a class. Someone picked it up and didn't try to return it (call the company or "HOME" phone entry). I txt'd his phone saying "I want that phone back" got a text back "Gonna cost you 50 bux", so we went and got the phone and gave the guy 50 bux, and on the way out, my friend was like "if you hadn't demanded 50 bux, you might've gotten more than that"
It was worth 50 bux to the guy who found it, but it was worth 500 bux to my friend. So there you have it, b honest, return the phone, and heck may'b u'll get something more than a paperweight.

hopefully the guy/girl has smartphonetracker or something similar installed so he can find seanwhite and get his phone back soon.
yeah be nice
I think I had my touch pro a week and lost it during a big snow we had here in winston salem. I searched for a week for that phone....boy was i sad....
and we never from seanwhite again. I guess we just have to hope that he is doing the right thing, right sean?
Or sell it to one of the people down the street..maybe one idiot will buy it off you
personally if u have the money for one of these phones u should have enough to buy one again or if ur with sprint $50 bucks for a replacement. ****s happens and im always happy getting a new phone and yes u can change the esn number but thats a whole different story im sure it would b next to impossible for someone like you to find out how
edit: changing the esn is highly illegal

Quick insurance question.

So, yeah my line ends September 12th because I took advantage of that ETF thing.
I lost my phone. I had it blocked and everything. The insurance people keep saying its still activated while Sprint says its on the bad ESN list and insurance says no it's not. I'm confused.
So after a bunch of talking, I've come to the conclusion that I have to take that phone off my line. Is that correct? If I put an old EVO, are they gonna send me an EVO? Can I just deactivate it and have no phone attached?
EDIT: Reason I ask is because I've gotten all kinds of different answers, I trust you as customers know better, lol
If you called and reported it lost/stolen, then Sprint put blocks on it, but it is still active on your account (not usable) until you get a replacement and activate it on that line. Either way, if you report it as lost to insurance, then they should send you a replacement and you pay the deductible. If you put an old Evo on that line, they should still send you the replacement for the phone you lost.
Second, why would you trust that the customers know better than both Sprint and Assurion? Many people have different experiences with both of them. If I were you, I'd get on the phone with Sprint and have them conference with Assurion to make sure you get it taken care of the proper way.

[Q] Is it possible to buy a used phone and use my number on it?

Well in this case its my cousin but thought i'd ask because i feel horrible for her.
1) She had her Evo 3d Stolen.
2) someone gave her a Blackberry temporarily and she went to sprint to activate it until she got a better phone.
3) she bought a used Evo 3d from some guy for $250 (not bad?) but then when she went to Sprint they told her the old owner had a debt on the account and thus the phone's serial was tied to that account and she cant use it unless the old owner pays for her debt.
So she got scammed pretty much and now she has a Evo 3d she cant use.
4) bought a Evo 4g for $150 (ouch i mean 250 + 150 i wouldve just bought a new phone in the first place) which luckily she could use cause she knew the girl she bought it from had no debt on her sprint account.
sooo i want to help her out and be a good cousin and i was wondering if there was any way to "hack" that evo 3d and make her be able to use it (seeing as they dont have SIM card you cant just swap them like with other companies). Maybe then she could sell the Evo 4g and get some of her money back...
normally the phone would have to have a clean esn in order to be activated. however there are ppl who advertise on craigslist that they can "fix" a bad esn whatever that means... to get a phone with a bad esn working again u could flash it to another service carrier like boost for instance.
heres a tip of advice before u go out and buy used phones especially for sprint and verizon, call the service provider before purchasing the used phone and have them check the esn to make sure that it is indeed clean. that way u dont waste 250 dollars on a phone u cant activate
Sad story only some what legal way she can go about doing it is by using her evo 4g meid on her 3d and using her wimax keys to allow 4g it will make the evo unable to use but its only some what legal because she items both devices if she happens to break the device she can't replace it for a 3d because it would be recognized as a evo 4g check out the flashing to boost tread as a starter it will teach you about donor phones and esn's

[Q] Asurion: Found lost phone

I've received a replacement for a lost Evo 3D. The replacement is an E4GT.
I then found the lost phone.
Question is, can I send Asurion the previously-lost Evo 3D in the return envelope? It has a funky screen (though I think it's the mainboard, as about 20% of the time when powering on the screen, it's heavily flickering/artifacting) and I'd really rather have the E4GT.
Keep both, use 1 for spare as long as u have not had to pay for the replacement
Sent from my HTC EVO 3D X515m using xda premium
You can send it back, however as you claimed it as lost they will lost likely not expect a return as that's what your paying for.
However I would expect that the IMEI on that phone (or whatever Sprint tracks) will be blacklisted after that. I think you could still use it on Boost/etc though, not sure on that though.

If your other phone was reported lost/stolen and a replacement issued, the IMEI will be blocked on the lost phone. Sprint rarely if ever unblocks a reported lost phone. You can flash it to some other carrier as mercury said, that is about the options.
Actually, the "contract" you sign with Asurion when you make a claim says that the lost phone IS property of Asurion, and if it is ever found, you are to return it to them. Contact them to get a return envelope. As stated above, the ESN will be blocked, so you can't activate it anyway.
Or, if you are dishonest, you could sell it for parts on eBay to make back some of your deductible. Not that I would personally.

Wait, they gave you an EVO 4G LTE? They have them in stock? Wow, looks like no one has a straight story there. I had to have my original EVO 3D replaced last week. Called on Wed about it, was told it was on back order and I'd get a "NEW" model. Got a "refurbished" on Friday which had problems. Called again, got another refurbished phone yesterday... Asked them several times to just send me an upgraded model if they kept putting me on the back order list, and they said they had NONE. Figures...

I was happy, I was getting sick of the 3D's crappy screen with the almost non-existent viewing angle.
Oh, I feel stupid now...
I found confirmation that you ARE supposed to turn in your lost phone, if you find it. This is written on the paper that comes with the replacements:
"Found or recovered equipment replaced by Asurion is the property of the insurance program and must be returned and can not be reactivated."
I don't think anything has changed in two years, but a while back I lost my blackberry bold 9700, got a replacement through insurance, found my old one, both worked, but ended up selling both through ebay. As far as I know they only block ESN numbers through CDMA providers. I have never heard someone buy a GSM phone and have it not be able to be activated.
My question is, has there been any change to this since 2010? Or is it different from iPhones/Androids? It seems to me, A) Insurion gets their monthly payment, and the deductible, so they get all their money, so chances are they don't really care. and B) if someone buys the "lost/stolen" phone, now they have to sign up for a contract with the carier, which gets them more money, so they probably don't care either.

Sorry for an accident? I guess? Regardless of the fact that I've been paying full TEP for almost 2 years and $100 for the new phone?
Even the people that are actually filing fraudulent claims, they're really not hurting anyone except POSSIBLY themselves. These insurance companies aren't exactly going bankrupt. It's like grocery stores, they budget for shoplifting. Shoplifting isn't right, but it isn't hurting the store or the other customers. Same thing with insurance.

I know I'm feeding the troll, but:
This is exactly what the insurance companies want you to think. Maybe living in Florida has influenced my perspective, but they always claim poverty from fraud or nonexistent hurricanes while paying out less than half of premiums in claims.
Plus, it would cost more to sue than just ignoring it since the wholesale cost is less than the deductible plus monthly premiums.

Ruin insurance companies??? LOL Yea paying $8 a month for years and then charging $100 deductible for a refurbished phone that you could get for $120 is HARDLY losing money for the insurance companies. I guess your an exception to everyone else that happens to lose a phone or the phone malfunctions.
What WOULD ruin insurance companies would be if everybody was perfect like you and nobody lost their phones and their phones never broke! Then we wouldnt need insurance in the first place.

$500 paperweight?

So, a week ago I bought an HTC One from craigslist. We met at a T-Mobile store so that they could verify the phone was clean and able to be activated. They said everything was clean and safe to buy. Phone was working great for a week and then out of nowhere earlier today all the data and cellular service just turns off completely. I try turning it off & on several times, toggling airplane mode off/on, etc. etc. Finally I go in to a T-mobile store. After 30 minutes of turning it off & on, changing the SIM, calling corporate, etc. eventually they tell me that the phone was reported lost earlier today and is now blocked.
They tell me there is nothing they can do.... am I really just out the $450 now? Is there anything I can do??? What's the point of them verifying or checking anything if this can still be done? Any help or suggestions please!?!?
The only way to get it taken off the list is if the original phone owner calls in and says it is not stolen. It can be used with AT&T but none of the carriers that use Tmobile.
What your seller probably did was make an insurance claim. Get a second phone for $175 then he never returned the old phone sold it to you made $325 and then you get screwed.
Happens a lot more often now that IMEI can be blocked since march.
If you can get a hold of the person who sold it to you and be like wtf

If your seller was the original owner, then he is committing fraud if he has later reported it stolen. Check with the seller, and if you don't get a good answer, call the police. If the phone is stolen, then you need to call the police.
Thanks both of you, I love xda!
You think the police are really going to do anything about this? I kinda figured that would be a long shot. I'm guessing if I can find the seller's contact info they either won't answer, will hang up on me right away, or maybe even change their number if they didn't already....
To me, what I can't understand is how T-mobile doesn't have a better process that is more controlled. The IMEI should be tied to an account/owner and only be allowed to be activated on another account after transferring the ownership with the owner's consent. This seems like a pretty spotty process without any kind of controls in place.
Really don't want to be out half a grand....
Unfortunately I don't see any process like that anytime soon probably minimum ten years. That's what GSM is all about freedom to get a phone anywhere anytime. It is unfortunate that this happened to you. Happens very frequently especially within first fee months of phone launch.

The police report may not help you, but eventually it is quite possible that it will get the perpetrator into a lot of trouble - maybe keeping them from hitting someone else...
wait til all the big names start sharing the IMEI blacklists.
fun times.
I called T–mobile myself a bit ago and just explained what happened. Apparently the lady put in a request to unblock it. She said it will take up to 48 hours to get it unblocked and to power cycle my phone pull the SIM out and try to make a call in 48 hours. Not sure what to think about that.... I guess I'll just give it a day or two and see what happens :/ From the research I've done it sounds unlikely they'll unblock it but I will stay optimistic.
SIDE NOTE: I found the sellers phone number and the text string of arranging the purchase. Think I should contact authorities or T-Mobile with the info or just try calling them directly?
If nothing else doesn't work, you can sell it to an Canadian or foreigner... Otherwise good luck...Did you ask for the receipt?, because when I bought my t-mobile htc one, I asked the seller to sent me a receipt.

Haha yeah I understand what you're saying and that you're not promoting me doing the same thing that was done to me. As a backup plan if nothing else works, this device could be used on AT&T right? I recently came from Sprint so not real savvy on how the SIM card / GSM networks work yet. Would I have to get the device "unlocked" to use on AT&T or a different GSM network? If so, could anyone point me in the right direction on how to do this and/or how much that costs.

You would also get fired for doing something stupid like that. You need to read up on the process of unblocking phones. Serious note, dont risk your job over something like this. Its not worth it, plus that phone is property of asurion once its reported stolen.
Do this!!!!
*Try to contact seller and get your money back
*Contact authorities and have them file a report and maybe and insurance fraud case.
*Dont waste your time anymore trying to contact tmobile. They will not unblock it. That phone belongs to asurion due to them paying for it. I would also recommend calling them 1-866-268-7221 Maybe they can assist you with something.
Good luck and hope you get your money back.

Well there is your lesson learned, Don't buy phones from Craigslist! I actually in the past had that happen but on a iPhone 4S and well it actually got blocked 3 days later and AT&T said it was reported stolen. So From there on I either buy my phones on ebay or just do some AT&T loopholes to get a brand new HTC One which I did and pay the new activation price for it

Thanks for the reply. Is that the number for Assurion? The store manager yesterday called them too and they were completely useless and just said to talk to T-mobile.

Is eBay safer than craigslist? How did you get the new phone from Att?
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
Why not learn a lesson from it and sell it to get the most of it ? Thats what i did in past
You can sell it on eBay say it is blacklisted at least get some money back.
Buddy of mine lost his phone made a claim. Then found his phone the day he got the new phone he called asurion for instructions on what to do he sent his new phone back they received it and got his money back in about ten days total. But they never unblocked his current phone that he found again. Here we are almost three months later his phone is still blacklisted and did nothing wrong. Called Tmobile at least ten times they always say 48 hours and doesn't do anything so he just gave up its a paperweight.

So I went over to Ebay and I see there is an HTC One with a T-mobile blacklisted IMEI with over 40 bids selling for over $400... this is very encouraging. Only difference is that one is Unlocked and the seller said he already verified it does work with AT&T with some minor APN changes. Does this seem legit? If so, what is the best/cheapest/most reliable way for me to unlock my phone? I did research this, but it sounds like many online sites charge a pretty good fee for this and don't have the best reputation. Also, most recommended having your carrier do it, which I'm sure is not an option in my case..... Appreciate the support!

I wont suggest you listing it as a phone working on at&t because this phone would not work in usa after a certain period(when tmobile UPDATES their blacklist with other networks) , if the ebay seller advises as such he would face the consequences . Payments are mostly done through paypal and they give a 45 day window for the buyer to claim the phone as not described . That would put you again in the same situation you are today in . You not just sell it for parts ? Get your money out of this sh*t and get yourself a new phone?
Just my 2cent !
@jones75534 sorry to tell u but most unlocking service wont unlock your phone . It is blacklisted in all the database
