[Q] (will be) new owner, some question - HTC Amaze 4G

Hello all,
I am getting one from Mobilicity, and I have some quick question
I saw many people complaining about hardware issues, mostly the screen. how can I identify if it's good or crappy screen ?
Does Mobilicity has 2 screen manufacturer as well ?
also, if I don't unlock the bootloader, can I at least change its theme and menu ?
Thanks

I personally haven't seen any screen issues on the canadian phones, TELUS, WIND, or Mobilicity, but that doesn't mean it hasn't happened. I wasn't aware of HTC purchasing screens for the Amaze 4G from multiple manufacturers either.
You can change your theme through HTC Sense 3.0, not sure what you mean by menu. Your best bet is to go to a Mobilicity store (or WIND or TELUS) and play with one of their live demos. Good luck, its an awesome phone!

well they had 2 different screens on the desire, incredible, mytouch 4g, sensation, and more. so probably. i dont understand why they do it. someone posted a thread about his replacement having a much better screen than his last one so who knows! my senny had an amazing screen though

I have the Amaze on Tmobile and I haven't yet to see a post confirming two different panel types.
I have seen one member posting about a dramatic difference on his new Amaze but he hasn't confirmed his panel type either.
And I have no problems with my screen at all.
The way to identify your screen type is as follows: (This does not require root)
1. Download Terminal Emulator from the Market.
2. Restart your phone. (This reduces the results log.)
3. Run Terminal and type in "dmesg" without the " "
4. Long press on the data and choose "select all" then copy.
5. Open your "mail" app. Paste and send it to yourself.
6. Hop on your computer and open that email. "Ctrl F" to search the term "panel"
7. Keep hitting "next" until you come to something that says "panel type = "
8. It will look something like this:
mipi_novatek_panel_type_detect panel_type=PANEL_ID_PYD_AUO_NT
Good luck.

DialPad replacement ?

I am using a replacement for the dialpad screen called contactbreeze by www.sbsh.net. It's outstanding!
How can I softcode the big green dialpad button to make use of the replacement dialpad?

I saw that and installed it. It does let you map an application or even a command line statement (among other things) to all the buttons including the big green/red call buttons. Since contact breeze though is simply an extension of pocket breeze, I haven't quite yet figured out how to call it? Has anyone yet figured this out?
Hey guys, wrong forum for this topic. You might have better luck in the General sub-forum, since this is aparently a discussion of a WM5 specific nature.
Now go have fun!

HTC Keybaord

I know this it out there somewhere, but I can't find it for the life of me. I am looking for the on screen keyboard that was made (I believe by XDA developers) that was custom made according to which type of screen you had. I had it, loved it, had to flash and now can't find it again. I am posting this here instead of the General Forum because I also cannot remember which one was the correct one to use for the Titan. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

[Q]

I bought an eris off craigslist, and this time around it was a bit of a ripoff.
make a long story short, guy cloned it (or so it seems) and I couldn't really get it to work. So now i started reading the
HOW TO: Fully Flash an HTC Droid Eris to Metro PCS found on Howard Forums and copied throughout the area
and it's a great read. I go to metro pcs, have them flash it. They tell me that since it was cloned the ID numbers on it are from some old phone at some point the phone may stop working. (Great...)
Hence I need a phone so I have this until i get another or it dies and I get another-whichever comes first.
Now in reading that great tutorial I have come to part 3, number 6. I can't get it to work properly. So i post on that thread my dilemma (it's on the last page of it), and someone replied that if I am getting "$" prompts and not a "#" prompt it isn't rooted.
oookkkkkkkkk.
So now, i am looking to root it I guess. After reviewing some threads here it seems there are some massive advantages to rooting the phone. and find this nice thread:
Eris Rooting Guide: Updated 18 November 2010, 10:47 am Central U.S. (found on androidforums)
So now that you have some background and I am running out of breath, here's the actual questions (please keep in mind while i learn quick and am "computer techy" i am oblivious to phones):
1) Will rooting the phone mess up my flash, or the fact that it's cloned.
2) Will it wipe out any valuable information?
3) If I root it will i lose connection to my service?
4) is there a way to reset the phone so I have the original ID numbers to it? (guy at metro pcs dealer tried and it wouldn't work no matter what he did and i thought him pretty fluent in his work)
5) most folks have told me to go with the 1 click root, while that sounds awesome, does it truly matter what rom i use? (one with it or something like froyo (not v 38 i guess)
Additionally if someone could recommend some good reads, I would appreciate it. While I realize most people first think to scour the posts posted (and I have) it's difficult to pull tangible information in an efficient manner with such a vague search ( How to root eris), not to mention, I would prefer advice from reputable folks and there are always ppl out there to hurt others (hence i know this is THE place to go )
OK, now Ive run out of breath
Thanks in advance to all
JSammy
PS sorry can't post links - im a noob to this board
1) Will rooting the phone mess up my flash, or the fact that it's cloned.
It shouldn't.
2) Will it wipe out any valuable information?
No.
3) If I root it will i lose connection to my service?
No.
4) is there a way to reset the phone so I have the original ID numbers to it? (guy at metro pcs dealer tried and it wouldn't work no matter what he did and i thought him pretty fluent in his work)
Not sure. Probably not.
5) most folks have told me to go with the 1 click root, while that sounds awesome, does it truly matter what rom i use? (one with it or something like froyo (not v 38 i guess)
You can use whatever ROM you like. I personally recommend Tazz Floyo. It's a matter of preference.

Pin Code Unlock without pressing OK button?

Hi guys,
I still possible to make SGS2 unlock the phone as soon as i enter the right pin code on lock screen, without having to press the OK button down the bottom?
Doubt it, asthe ability to lock the sim card be too great. Example: you make a mistake on the last digit. 2 attempts left. You have taken a couple of beers. Ops. Sim Locked
Has anyone found a solution to this??
I've been customizing my phone every day for who knows how long, little by little to get it just how i like it, and this 'OK' button is annoying. VERY annoying. Though, I need a PIN on my phone, and 99.99%of the apps on the market have horrible horrible designs. No offence, but I'd rather stay with the android look. All of the thread's I've found have either told someone to use a third-party app, or use CM10. Well, someone who has almost all of their information on their phone can't afford to install this, seeing as it wipes your entire phone, and for a PIN, that's unnecessary. I don't know what roms are, same with roms. I like the way the touchwiz UI looks on my E4GT(I have fk09 leak installed, recently got this phone, and barely had anything on it). I like the way JB looks with touchwiz way more than it did on ICS(looked horrid).
TL;DR
If someone can find a fix to this, without any third party launchers, or horrible-looking apps, that would be great. If you give a rom, explain how to install it. Thanks in advance.
The rom SlimBean has this feature which I use. It can be found in the lock screen settings.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
I'm going to preempt the inevitable question that's going to come following Drexciya's excellent suggestion to use Slim if you want this feature (tick quick unlock in settings/interface/lock screen/screen security).
How do you install it ? Read the first page of the Slim thread in Development. Easy.

Thanks for an answer, but AFAIK, FK09 has no recovery mod, which i didn't realize, and unless someone kniws of one that supports the build,pr whatever, I can't load any mods.. Also, links to specefic topics help a lot..
And you're unable to go to the Development section & look for the Slim Bean thread like everyone else here why exactly ? (using the XDA app on your phone & being too lazy don't count as valid answers).
Re: whatever you're running now that has no recovery, looks like you're going to have to flash something else; another rom that has CWRecovery or at the very least temporary CWRecovery (which will disappear after you reboot) if you want to flash Slim. I don't believe there's an Odin version.

No, I'm not being lazy, I simply dont know where to look. Not sure if you could tell, t I'm new here, and I'm not used to this. Did you expect me to just know where EVERYTHING is? I found this thread after wasting my entire evening looking for a solution, and found this thread. I signed up specefically for this purpose. I was trying to ask for a link without looking too unappreciative, but rhatbobvoliously didn't help. And I don't use an xda app, nor do I intend to.

I really don't know how to do this.. Is there a thread for this? I'll just google it.. Thanks anyways.
My point was (is) I don't have a link. If I want to get you a link, I'd go to Development (by navigating the site; not exactly a new fandangled web thingy) & find the thread, come back here & post the link. You're perfectly capable of doing this yourself, yet you expect me to that ?
That speaks volumes about the people who seem to visit here these days. They want everything served up to them on a silver platter with a minimum or no effort on their own part.
Also, from his first post in this thread, he's an Epic 4g Touch user. Any ROM suggestions he gets here are likely to be i9100 ROMs.

And this shows that some people who find themselves comfortable here can't read. I obviously don't know how to get to development, or how to navigate the forums. I don't inderatand how it takes any more explaination that I DON'T KNOW where to look. Get around looking like a smart allic, and actually take the time to help people around. What are you, 14? You act like it, as everyone is supposed to know everything on a site for developers. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that I know nothing about these things. I didn't do the rooting, soneone else did, so stop expecting everyone knows as much about this forum, or everything you are, because they don't. As far as I know, I didn't come here to argue with someone I don't even know, who thinks they're an internet genious, I came here for support. A link is the least of your problems if you think I know where it is. If you don't want to, don't do it, that's simple, just don't do it. Just don't reply, and save yourself the embarassment, because you just made the forums seem like ignorant children with conputers, who care more about criticising people than anything.

Clearly you don't know you're in the wrong place anyways.
Yes, they are both Galaxy SII's. They are different, however, since yours (Epic 4g Touch) is a phone designed to work on Sprint's CDMA network. That phone has a separate forum. There are plenty of ROMs for that device in its forum.
The device this forum is for (GT-I9100) is a GSM phone that won't even work on Sprint's network. So no, ROMs for this phone won't work on your phone.

Basic Knowledge:
I have been getting questions regarding unlocking and rooting a lot and I keep refering people to Binary's page he has made and spend a lot of time making. In Order to root you need to the the following in THIS order:
1. Unlock bootloader (For mac and linux go to this thread its for the rezound, but is exactly the same for the amaze. For pc go here)
2. Put Custom recovery on your phone (for mac, pc and linux look below on post #2)
3. Root your phone, Either with a custom rom (in the development section), or by flashing/installing su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip, via custom recovery that you just installed in step 2. In order to learn how to flash su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip go here. For extreme newbies look at the bottom of the post here to show you easy way to get into your recovery and flash/install su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip, via taking out back battery.
All this found in thread [HOW TO] ROOT HTC RUBY / AMAZE 4G in the first sticky post in General Section, in much more detail.
NOTE: ONE CLICK ROOT TOOL DOES NOT NOT UNLOCK YOUR PHONE NOR DOES IT PUT CUSTOM RECOVERY, IT ONLY ROOTS. YOU MUST FOLLOW BASIC KNOWLEDGE ABOVE

Troubleshooting:
1.Common Problems: You can find more common problem questions answered here
2.Custom Recovery Problems: If have problems with step 3 (Custom Recovery) in [HOW TO] ROOT HTC RUBY / AMAZE 4G, or from the post below, go to this page.
3.WiFi and Bluetooth Problems: This is due to your kernel. I have seen multiple threads about this. Here are the ways to resolve this:
Whenever you download a rom there's a boot.img file in there. always extract the boot.img file and use xobarders kernel flasher to flash your kernel before you install your custom rom. If you are running a stock rom, download All in One Toolkit by Hasoon. Alternatively you can use the one and only custom kernel we have right now Faux's Custom kernel.
4.Touchscreen and Multitouch issues (Gaming Etc): It seems like installing a third party lockscreen widget such as Widgetlocker, Go locker, or Flyscreen, tends to interfere with the multitouch of the HTC amaze. Disable these widgets and restart your phone. Then use this program from the market to get 4 solid points touch points, If you are not getting it, uninstall the lockscreen widget altogether, and restart until you are constantly getting four touchpoints.

Rules and General Knowledge:
Over time we get many many questions in the General Section about things that can easily be found. I assure you if you read these in this order, you will learn a lot, and have almost no questions left.
1. Read the FAQ section: Here
2. Please Read the Bible in the development section, This is very helpful: Here
3. Look in the development section for what you need before asking for roms, stock roms, how to root, or how to unlock. (The development section is only three pages, I urge you to go through it if you want to learn how to do things and are unfamiliar with things: Here
4. Use the search feature before asking a question.

Camera Quality:
There have been many debates among people about camera quality, this is a guide that provides good information on camera and why the amaze has the best camera on the market
1. Aperture 101: http://inluminent.com/2005/12/14/digital-photography-101-aperture/
2. Lens size/focal length (wide viewing angle): http://www.paragon-press.com/lens/lenchart.htm
Some comparisons:
HTC Amaze: F/2.2, backside illuminated sensor, Excellent camera software, Close to zero shutterlag. 28 mm lens, very wide viewing angle (get more real estate in one picture)
Iphone 4S: F/2.4, backside illuminated sensor, Above Average camera software, Close to zero shutterlag 35 mm lens, wide viewing angle
Galaxy S II: F/2.65, NO backside illuminated sensor, Above Average camera software, Normal shutter lag, I think 28 mm lens (seems to be more like 30 or 35), very wide viwing angle.
Galaxy nexus: F/2.75, NO backside illuminated sensor, Basic ICS camera software, Zero shutterlag, 35 mm lens, wide viewing angle
The Amaze has the widest viewing angle, as it has a 28 mm lens, the lower the number the more real estate you get, look at number 2 (lens size) above. Look at how much wider of a field you get with galaxy s II and amaze 4g. Amaze has the lowest f/stop (aperture), f/2.2, meaning more light gets to the sensor. However lower f stop comes at a price, I prefer a f/2.4 on the iphone 4s but with a wide viewing angle of 28mm, no phone on the market has that right now. The higher your f-stop, the easier it will be to focus on larger subjects and objects and to keep more of the frame in focus, at the cost of a darker image. The lower f-stops will give you a blurrier background and possibly create some darkness around the corners of the frame, but a brighter overall image
compare images a when it shows you the distance: http://www.phonearena.com/reviews/i...axy-S-II-vs-Amaze-4G-camera-comparison_id2883

I've read somewhere there are 3.7 million Android devices activated on Christmas day alone. Assumed that 1% of those new device is the Amaze and that'll give us 37,000 new Amaze owner with assuming/estimately/approx. 10% wanted to root their phone ... that equal to 3,700 newbies and at least 1/2 of them will head to this forum
I wouldn't be suprise if my Mom log-in here and ask is rooting will allow her newly Amaze steamed her rices for her though.
So, get ready and be a little gentle if you could lads.

I believe if you are unable to unlock and root your phone, you better not do (actually not be allowed to do) it in the first place and first spend some time learning before doing it...people just want to root for the heck of it without understanding anything and they probably will have 2000 more questions after rooting and trying to customize and flash roms.
Do you know how much I had to read before I decided to unlock and root my nexus one the first time!!! I wanted to know what it meant what I could do etc. I screwed my phone up 2 times and tried different things to fix it and was able to...that's how you learn. with all the guides provided here people should have no problem learning SO SO much... This way they can get better use of their phone...learn how to flash themes, learn what hboot, fastboot, kernel, etc all that stuff does.
Please folks I urge you to read read read...It's not like your reading a boring textbook, its cool stuff that'll make you be able to use your phone much more effectively and to your liking.
I say binary should take out the noobproof recovery zip file and let people learn how to do it in fastboot and adb, thats how i learned, but then that'll create a massive load of questions i guess. learning a little bit of dos in the process its always usefull.

We're still getting the questions and I'm still getting the private messages but not as much now. I agree with you that the people that can't root the device because they can't follow the instructions should not be allowed to do so. Here's a simple reason why. When I used to develop ports and themes (couple roms back in the G1/MT3G days) I always had to include a disclaimer that WAS the link. In other words I would say download by clicking the disclaimer below which would waive their rights to blame me should something go wrong. Why did I do that? Because people couldn't read or follow instructions which caused a quite a bit of grief for me. Funny thing was that when I began using that method people were asking me "Where can I download?" and that would prove to me that they did not read the disclaimer or the instructions for that matter. I have also learned that you have to put words in color, different sizes, use underlines and even in bold to get their attention. In fact, I'll be willing to wager that that last sentence was the first to get your attention. Which proves my point. Developers need to make things stand out without making it look tacky.
Here's an example of one of my themes with what I was talking about:

You must add pictures, underlines, changelogs that are easy to find, read and understand. Then you need to add the disclaimer. That way you don't need to worry about getting people pissed off at you for messing up their device.

Would have saved me a few minutes the other day if this was posted, but I just opened the .bat files in textedit and ran them in terminal(with whatever tweaks to the commands needed). Glad it is here for future osx/linux people though.
I never did figure out why, but a few different versions of fastboot didn't work for me- one of these had a version that worked for me, the others didn't, can't remember which worked.. RecoveryInstallerForNoobs, EasyKernelFlasher, Xboarder56-All-in-One-Tool. Or maybe it was fastboot-mac that I think I found on the htcdev site..
Either way, definitely cool to see more mac/linux friendliness in the forums I don't touch my pc if at all possible..

I don't know about 2.0, I downloaded it and some other files 2 nights ago when I got my amaze. Like I said, there were a few versions of fastboot that I tried that didn't work.. still the entire process of unlocking bootloader, flashing recovery, and flashing a rom took less than 30 minutes once I figured out that the fastboot file was the issue. It probably helps that I thought I'd have this phone a month ago, so already researched everything I would need to know.
Binary tell me if you need me to change anything, or how the posts look. Feel free to change them. After seeing what you have done before, you have a better design sense than I do I guess
