[Q] Wi-fi hotspot in settings??? - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

So in wireless settings it has the options for "tethering and mobile hotspot" including usb, wifi and bluetooth hotspots...
2 questions:
1. Is this on your TP?(also what firmware you are on because i don't remember seeing this before update)
2. Why? lol is it just randomly there or what?

I think it is just from hc. I have had since I got this thing. Probably wasn't worth the time to take it out.

Why?
This is so you could share your internet connection. Share it to either devices that don't have access to the connection you are using or simply don't have that WiFi in range (though that is unlikely since Prime has low-range WiFi at best).

[Q] pdanet problems

I was hoping to use pdanet to connect my Flyer to Evo phone for internet access when wifi is not available. I installed it on both devices, followed all directions, and they both said they were paired and connected. But Flyer can't get online.
Has anyone else tried this? Or know what I'm doing wrong?

Why should someone? Both devices have all functions for a direct connection and didn't need old tools like pdanet?!
On the EVO phone:
-> Settings -> Wireless & networks -> Portable Wi-Fi hotspot ...
On the Flyer:
- Connect to the WiFi which you set up above
PS. Some providers didn't aloud to make a WiFi-Hotspot on their 3G connections.

Yes, I know this, but sorry to say I don't want to pay $30 every month for occasional internet access for Flyer to access the very same stuff I could do on the phone. So I don't understand the extra charge. Data is data, and if I go over what I pay for, I am happy to pay for additional. Why should the device matter? Hence, a tethering app.

Right. Not rooted.
I thought pdanet was a wired tether app? Hate to sound like a cliche xda user but root might be your best bet.

Pdanet has a bluetooth connection option, and also now has a beta tablet version. I think Easy Tether is wired only. After following directions to configure, it appears they are connected to each other, bluetooth pairing, etc, but no data will flow through phone to tab.
I've had my Evo for quite a while, and it's exactly the way I want it. I hate the thought of rooting and risking really screwing things up. I'd like to make it work without root.
I wonder if there are any integral differences between Flyer and View that would cause problems in connecting to phone hotspot. Is phone hotspot any different from computer wifi?
Now I have a rooted Wifi Flyer with support for Ad-Hoc networks. Just replace the wpa_supplicant file under system/bin with the one you can download on this forum.
The file is located here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=754961
No need to flash the zip. Just open it, copy the wpa_supplicant file to your Flyer and reboot.
Now I can use wireless tether with my rooted D1.

[Q] Share your Wireless Tether Settings/Apps please.

I used wireless tether without any problem on my old droid X, but now I'm having connection issues. My Asus transformer can see my Rezound just fine and connect, but my in dashoard Galaxy Tab doesn't see it at all.
I've tried the current beta of Wireless Tether, 2.0.7, Barnacle, and Open Garden, all with the same results.
We need to nail down what specific settings those successfully tethering are using.
Please list the following.
1. What app you are using.
2. What settings you are using (device presets, clamping, ect.).
3. What you are successful in tethering wirelessly to.
I'm going to run a few more tests, and post mine.
I don't mean to ask a dumb question but these apps just allow you to use your phones 4g on a laptop, etc. ? Are they free if you have unlimited data?
Why aren't people using Mobile hotspot to tether or am I getting confused?

Gotcha. What tether apps are people using for free? What seems to be working.
Wireless tether 2.07 kinda works. I have to run it open and it only broadcasts in ad-hoc mode

I'm using this one http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/detail?name=wifi_tether_v3_1-pre113.apk&can=2&q= and I have "Routing Fix" checked under settings. Works good for me (CleanROM 1.1 and Ziggy's Kernel).
Thanks for the post. I really need to know this too. I've tried everything but still a no go.
According to wiki ad hoc needs the same channels to work. For the people that do have it working what channels are you using in ad hoc mode.
Definition
To set up an ad-hoc wireless network, each wireless adapter must be configured for ad-hoc mode versus the alternative infrastructure mode. In addition, all wireless adapters on the ad-hoc network must use the same SSID and the same channel number.

The problem is what devices you try to use to connect to your phone's mobile connection. I tried connecting with my Asus laptop (Windows 7) and it wouldn't connect correctly. I tried connecting with my gf's windows xp laptop and it works perfectly fine!
If you have questions about wireless tethering, please go do a bit of searching and reading, there are hundreds if threads that describe what it is.
This is a thread so we can get it working right.

I fought for days over this before this release and from my trial and endless errors Ive come to realize (very very long story short) for the time being the best work through is using "OpenGarden" from the market. Don't change any settings. Just have an open connection and use access control. Like I said. Long story short, the issue lies within encryption. Leave it open and use access control. Hope this helps.

+1. Its the only way I got it to work with my device so far.
So what paid/free apps are currently working?
Is anyone tethering a Touchpad running CM7 successfully? or an iPad? Currently posting for hotspot, but might cancel if I can still successfully tether those two over Adhoc. I can't get the Touchpad to work using wifi tether yet and don't have an iPad right now.

I've successfully tethered my IPad2 to my Rezound with Wireless Tether 2.0.7.
I also tether my Ipad2 without any problems. I'm using Open Garden.

Anyone ever setup bluetooth tether from N900 to Prime?

I've used mobile hot spot to do a wireless tether but would also like the option to tether via bluetooth (pan or dun). Phone is rooted.
Anyone got this to work?

I bluetooth tether my Prime to my Galaxy Note, so the profile is there. Can't help with N900 specifics though.

I've never been able to get bluetooth tethering working... try out http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=58570
but have got wireless to work on my N900
Got "Qt Mobile Hotspot" from extras (or extras-testing) for the N900, then search for "wpa_supplicant2" on this forum to get ad-hoc wireless connection to work on the Prime...and bingo
The "Qt Mobile Hotspot" has been a real find, allowing a multitude of devices to share my N900's internet connection.

9.4.2.21 Ad hoc doesn't seem to work

Hello,
I've been trying to use tethering of my 3G phone to get WiFi on my Prime. I am using an app from the market that creates an Adhoc network to do the tethering. The app is working fine as I verified by connecting my Laptop to my phone's 3G and got it working.
The Transformer Prime detects the Ad Hoc network but just doesn't want to connect to it!
Any suggestions?
Works fine for me (prime tethered to 4G HTC Rezound) .. It's probably just your app. Try using wifi-tether.
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
Yup, not working for me either. It sees it and let's me select the wifitether network but it just says "saved". It won't let me connect to it. I'll keep trying

I get that sometimes too...but a long hold on the wifi line has options to connect/forget/modify.....at different times, I've had to use each of them....but I'm always eventually been able to get tethered to my Win6.5 TouchPro 2.
The app I use is WMWiFiRouter.....it works great....but it's not a free app

You don't need that fix....That's one thing that 21 did....was to incorporate that fix into the update.
i think i may have your answer. i couldn't tether my prime to my htc evo 4g either. then i enabled routing fix under wifi tether settings and now I'm able to tether prime no problems at all. hope that works btw I'm using wifi tether 3.1 beta 6

tried a bunch of times...
i tried to connect a transformer prime to a mac book pro as access point with no success.
i got a "saved" message instead of "connected"... hit "connect" doesn't do the trick either.
tried using a nexus s as access point using easy wifi tether, and i've been able to connect my prime with no problem.
no security in both case. if ad hoc connection doesn't work please specify what access point you try to connect to. it might help to solve the problem.
ad hoc works with joikuspot premium on nokia n97 mini
In joikuspot premium settings you just have to choose for WEP Open. That way the tf201 will accept it when you put in the network key you get.

Sharing ethernet connection via wifi or bluetooth

Hi all,
I only have wifi in my hotel room for the next 4 or so nights, and I didn't bring my netbook. I have my prime, and I have ethernet working perfectly. I can't seem to be able to get wifi tethering to work. I am running stock, but have already unlocked and am happy to use a third party rom if it is confirmed to work. When I try to enable it, the option is greyed out. I have tried foxfi, but when I try to connect with my nexus, it just sits on obtaining IP address.
Any help would be superb! Cheers

Since the prime doesn't include a 3G modem, I don't believe any of the tethering framework is in place (such as DHCP host) and may not be supported by the wifi drivers. At least, not stock. You could try using CM9 or AOKP, since they're more generic builds for more devices and may include the supporting framework. However, at last check CM9 does not support USB ethernet. I don't know about AOKP.
I may misunderstand what you're asking.
You mean you have Ethernet to your TP and you want it to share wifi for your Nexus? I read of someone who verified that can be done after enabling Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot. It's located in Settings Wireless & Networks, More, Tethering & portable hotspot,

I think this may have something to do with the fact that USB Ethernet adaptors appear like a 3G connection in some ways (Speedtest sees it as cellular) so you can use it in the same way. The only thing that worries me about the appearing as a 3G connection is the fact that Samba Server will not enable while wifi is off even if ethernet is connected. Waiting on my USB Ethernet adaptor to arrive so I can test it on stock (to make sure it can work), then I'll be unlocking and going AOKP/CM9, whichever has ethernet supported.
OK, so I just turned my prime on, looked at the tethering menu, and the option for wifi hotspot wasn't greyed out. So I enabled it, and now it works! Literally no idea why it wouldn't work, or why it now does work. Cheers for the attempted help everyone, but it turns out it seemed fine all along.

You might try rebooting with the adapter connected and ethernet connected first, it might not startup without a reboot.
