init.d Permissions - HTC Rezound

This Is For Everyone. I've Noticed The Any File Inside The /etc/init.d Folder Won't Load If The Permission Is 666. For Me, The Files Need To Be 777 So That Way The System Can Execute The Script Files. This Makes Sense Because That's How I Remember My X2 When Naven Came Up With The Tweak Scripts.

Just to clarify 666 is RW-RW-RW- which means read/write for everyone but not executable.
777 is RWXRWXRWX which is read/write/execute for everyone. This is what makes rooting dangerous.

Yea I Well Aware Of How The Permissions Are Numbered Along With The Names Of The Numbers. Fact Of The Matter Is This, If The Script Files Don't Have The Execute Permission They Won't Load On My Phone.

Hmm, thanks for the tip. I think that might solve a problem I was having.
BTW, do you always capitalize the first letter of every word? For some reason my brain has a hard time reading that..

No they aren't. And for having a signature about trolls you are one of the biggest.
This should have been posted with more caution, and by a dev with more knowledge. Now you are going to have people running and changing permissions left and right when they think it will solve the problem.

Tips for the laymen rooting

I wanted to contribute something to the development but I'm a dumby when it comes to code. For a living I coordinate techs and developers with end users, basically I'm a tech-speak translator. I've notice that around these parts there are a ton of questions that could be easier resolved by following some guidelines. So this guide isn't about how to root or rom specifically, it's tips to avoid common mistakes and make it easier to provide you with help if something does go wrong. Think of it like when you call your cable help line and they ask you "is it plugged in" if you checked to make sure it was plugged in before you called you'll get to a solution a lot quicker.
I ask that any devs who can add to this do because knowing what us regular users can do to make your job (unpaid job that is) easier benefits us all.
Back up
This is super important but a lot of us are in such a rush to play with the goodies that we skip it. Always always keep a current back up of your sd card on your pc/mac. You can create a folder called "mytouchbak" or whatever you want and just copy and paste all the files over there.
Also nandroid backup. You should keep at least 2 nandroid backups. If you're just now rooting make a nandroid back up before you do anything. Then once you have a good stable rom running make another nandroid back up. This way you can either return to a default build, or to your working rom build.
These things are important because usually if you screw something up it's usually quicker and easier to just start from the beginning rather than have someone try to figure out what tiny step out of the many involved you may have done wrong, then figure out how to fix it.
Try twice
This relates to "back up." If something seems broken start from the beginning and try it again. Most likely you missed a step, forgot a symbol in something you typed, or sometimes something just didn't quite go right. By rooting you are doing things that weren't meant to be done and sometimes some numbers just got crossed somewhere. Before you proclaim that things are broken just try it again. You would be suprised by the number of times things work the second time through.
Read the whole thread
We have all done it. You follow the instructions perfectly and something doesn't work so you run to the forum and immediately write a post saying "help, i can't get it to work" on page 80 of a thread when several other people experienced the same problem, already asked the question and a solution was posted on page 20. I know it's sometimes a pain to skim 80 pages of posts but those 80 pages are probably caused by other people not reading the thread before posting. A good tip for this is if there is something specific that isn't working like wi-fi tether, just open the search toolbar in your browser, type "tether" and then go to each page hitting search. That way you don't have to read every post but if anyone has mentioned anything about tethering it will point you right to it and you only have to read those posts.
Have a computer ready
This is one that most of us already do but the one time you forget things always go bad. Don't ever rely on remembering the instructions you read on your phones browser when working on rooting and romming. If you have a computer in front of you you can read the forums and follow the instructions word for word which gives you a better chance of success.
Read everything first
Before you start read everything from start to finish at least once. Sometimes devs skip steps that they assume we know and then mention them later. It's because a lot of things seem like something everyone should know, but we don't. In the same vein if you can find multiple tutorials read them all first. This will give you several view points on doing the same thing and will in general make the whole process make more sense to you and clue you in on things one tutorial may have skipped past.
The other benefit is sometimes a step is listed, and then right after it it will say something like "and don't do that until you do this." such as with our current rooting loop method. If you read all the steps first before starting you won't be caught off guard by things like this.
Asking for help
When you get stuck, you can't find any answers AFTER READING AND SEARCHING THE FORUM for your issue then definitely ask away. How you ask relates to how easily it is for someone to help you.
Avoid making general statements when possible, detail is a must. Instead of saying "I rooted, then did A2SD, then restarted" give the steps you took to root and A2SD by either referencing the method such as "I rooted as per the steps laid out in (link to instructions or name of method) or lay out the exact steps line for line as to what you did. If you assume you rooted right and what went wrong was you missed a step in the rooting process how is anyone supposed to tell you what step you missed.
Also format it to be easy to read. Development trains your mind to be very organized and structured. Basically don't format your post like this guide I'm writing, in large blocks of paragraph text. Instead put each command on a new line for instance:
"I did this
adb shell
adb push update.zip /sd
reboot into recovery....."
this makes it a lot easier to provide you with help.
Slow down, Find a good time
Don't rush through the process. That's how steps are missed, commands are mistyped and phones get bricked. I've done roots at 2am and couldn't for the life of me get it to work, I put it away and tried again in the morning and things went great. So don't mess with rooting and romming when you're exhausted, in a hurry, high, in the midst of an argument with your girlfriend, or any sort of other distractions.
That's all I have for now, I hope it helps. If anyone has anything to add please do.
great guide, most of us probably follow these general rules without really thinking about it and sometimes that is overlooked when a new guy comes in to try to do something.

Thank you. I notice that happen a lot in my job where someone with no experience in the particular tech get's lost because the things we take for granted as common knowledge really aren't for someone new to the idea. Especially with the android devices becoming insanely popular theres a huge influx of new users looking at the goodies that come with root. install a custom rom or two and everything above becomes second nature.

Hi, I am trying to use Abd to do the stalling fix that Modaco Paul Obrien Provided, however (if im not mistaken) there arent any steps to making adb recognize your phone.
what should we press before doing this?
Enter the following commands in adb on your PC with your device attached (rooted, with USB debugging enabled):
CODE
adb shell
su
cp -rp /data/data /dbdata
mv /data/data /data/data.bak
ln -s /dbdata/data /data/data
reboot
I have showing in command promp before doing anything:
C:\Users\Eric>
Please someone get back to me. if this was posted, I aplogize.. you can delete it (if possibly) after im helped hopefully. I wonder why instructions don't clearly state the steps to avoid questions. There are 1 million threads and hard to search.
Fyi I've installed all the drivers and things for my device. I just need to know the next steps.

Hey thanks for replying. My sd card has avatar on it. I don't want to partition it and lose it.. I mean I could but the last time I partitioned the sd, my phone was blank. Maybe that's because when I flashed clockworks recovery it sent the backedup Rom to my sd car and not the internal memory?

Dont take this the wrong way, but what you are trying is extremely experimental, and I would not recommend it to you. You will end up frustrated later waiting for more advice, as you dont seem to have any experience w/ ADB. Maybe research ADB a bit, play around w/ it, and then possibly try this again.
I dont mean to discourage you, but this type of mod/hack is somewhat advanced, and may require some troubleshooting to get it working properly. You should also know EXACTLY how to undo what you are attempting to do before you go through with it, which is generally a good idea for these type of mods, as you may undo it soon
Thanks a lot. And u right. I'm about to unroot and wait for 2.2 because these developers know there are new people to this and it wouldnt hurt to go into a little more detail. I used Amonras Recovery method on my nexus and didn't have to go through all this download moad stuff and Odin etc. Its not that easy when people get annoyed by questions lol but thanks a lot though.

To be fair, this is the development forum. It's for developers to talk to other developers. We are generally willing to help people out, but do try to make sure you know the basics as much of what we do here is very experimental, and it may well not work right for everyone. As such, it's not really for general consumption. When we think our stuff is ready, we will make a thread in the general forum.
As for partitioning, just copy avatar somewhere else first. Or get a new card to experiment with. They are cheap and the stock one is small and slow.
Note that the comments thing is a double edged sword, we have lost developers to posts like yours. Keep in mind that people are giving their free time to give the community these roms, hacks, and apps, for free. They don't owe you or anyone else anything.

As I stated earlier, we are not telling you how to do it EXACTLY because we do not recommend this for you. You are free to go research and do it anyways, but you've been warned. There will be builds out soon that make everything much easier, but until then, I recommend waiting...
Just a clarification....donations are made to devs (and anyone) without any consideration of something in return.
for example, I sent a donation to @wesgarner the moment he started considering working on CM6 for the vibrant. I am not "owed" anything from him, and he can use the donation as he wishes, although I hope he used it towards something android related.
There is a huge difference between what you said regarding donations, and how I put it. I'm sure some developers get annoyed when people expect things after donating. Its not a purchase, its a donation to a cause
Did you guys know that NO FLAMING is an XDA rule??
@OP First you should make sure you've installed the android sdk properly by visiting developers.android.com
Before you write any command in a CMD window you should specify where your android sdk is by writing
> cd C:\android-sdk_r06-windows\android-sdk-windows\tools (just using this SDK as an example, you may be using the 2.1 SDK)
You can also read up on ADB by visiting this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=502010

While you are of course welcome to disagree, I thought the thread had been quite civil. I'm out though, the op said they want to wait a bit.
This might come in handy:
http://developer.android.com/sdk/installing.html
The thing most people miss is they don't add the path to the sdk so the adb command only works from the tools directory. To make it work everywhere, you need to: Right-click on My Computer, and select Properties. Under the Advanced tab, hit the Environment Variables button, and in the dialog that comes up, double-click on Path (under System Variables). At the end of the PATH, make sure there is a semicolon separating the last entry from the one you are about to type, which will be the location of the android sdk tools directory (for me it's C:\android-sdk-windows\tools). Once that's in your PATH, click ok, ok, then apply, reboot and you can
Code:
adb shell
from any directory. Of course, anyone without at least a little experience with command-line interfaces will be at a disadvantage; there's definitely a learning curve.
Ok, here is my super quick summary but you would get better help in the general forum. Most of the answers are here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728809
These are the instructions if you are in windows 7, it's probably the same for whatever version you're on.
If you have installed ADB correctly and the samsung drivers you should have the files located somewhere like C:\android-sdk-windows. You should also have usb debugging enabled on the phone (settings->applications->development) and the phone plugged in. Open the tools folder since that's where the ADB executable is. In that folder hold down shift and right click on a white part of the screen between files. You should see "Open Command Window Here". If not, click the start button and select run. Type CMD and press enter. In the command prompt type "cd C:\android-sdk-windows\tools" and press enter. Fill that in with whatever your path is. When you are in the correct folder you can now run adb commands in the command prompt. To test that your device is ready to work with ADB and everything is installed correctly just type "adb devices" and you should see some numbers and letters. If you don't see it list your device, something isn't setup correctly.

This is not a flame post, it's an explanation post.
The good people of these forums have been giving you resources to find your answers.
If you're going to step into this world, it requires a certain level of due diligence.
The thing is, they are helping you just like you asked, just not the way you expected. The name of the forum is Vibrant Android Development, not Vibrant Android Support.

[GUIDE THEME] GingerSwype

Ok guys so with a ton of reading and researching here's a little thing I was trying to figure out for awhile and finally did it so Im going to share a little guide. Now non of this is mine, I just follow instructions well
With all the Gingerbread talk/themes I haven't seen anyone here theme the stock MT4G Swype. I'm on CM7 Nightlies but I believe it should also work with stock MT4G sense since I pulled it from there.
Now before we begin I take no responsibility if this bricks your phone or make it burst in flames. This guide does need a know how to adb and have jdk and jre installed properly to sign the apk.
First we need the stock swype:
-I followed this guide from Marine6680
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=959192&highlight=swype
Now we need the Gingerbread Theme for Swype:
-I got the files from Marurban
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=930306
-The file we need is the 2.6 v0.3 WVGA without Mic
Marurban's guide was kinda confusing and that was where I was having a little trouble. So then I found stone_ship's guide and helped me a lot.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=955721
I simply copied just all the keyboard pngs and left glow and wcw png stock. I still need to learn how to change the font color on the popup
After you have signed your themed swype.apk use Marine6680's guide to install it back to your phone. If your having trouble with this I will try with the best of my ability to help but no promises Enjoy!
Also Please thank Marine6600, Marurban and stone_ship for their guides to make this possible.
FYI, you do relize that if you are just replacing the images as you did, that it can be done in about 10 seconds using 7zip. You dont need to resign the zip, no Apk Manager or anything like that. And this isnt really a "Guide" but just a post with links to guides from other people. If you would like a "Guide on image replacement using 7zip" I will be happy to help.

No I didnt read the OP, I just posted blindly. WTF kind of stupid comment is that?
When someone makes a thread with "Guide Theme" in the title, I kinda EXPECT A GUIDE. Not links to guides. Second I am in no way trying to flame this guy (like you tried to do to me) but let him know that there is much easier ways to achieve what he has done. I also even offered to help him make a simple GUIDE for doing this.
And whats up with your post? And I quote:

My point with that is it is easy to pick apart someones post huh.
I mean, I dont even know why you posted in this thread. Your comment added absolutly no help to the thread and only tried to flame me.
I will now end this rant before I say something I shouldnt
And your comment added so much help, maybe you should write another EZ guide for it. No one flamed you as you simply try to bash the guy without clearly comprehending what he did. No one cares what you expected thats like you claiming to write guides from using other peoples and not giving them credit for it.
Whoa... Sorry for this guys all I wanted to do was share what I found out myself cause I wanted to theme my swype to gingerbread and didn't know how. So instead of asking I just read up and searched and didn't come up with anything simple. My bad for thinking it might help people.

There is no reason to lock or delete this thread, you did nothing wrong. As a matter of fact you did a great job of researching and figuring out how to do what you wanted to do. I was only offering help to make this more of a guide for what you did and help show you a easier way of achieving it, so you could in turn help people easier. What's worng with you? You have been spamming every day. I've deleted your nonsense threads and post all this week.
Do you understand what you are doing?. Don't want to be offensive it's not my intention.
Do you have any notion about posting in forums? Your posts are erratic, confusing and nonsense sometimes.
Can you read other threads to have any idea of how to post or start a discussion.
You have been reported tons of times, If I received another report about your threads or posts, sorry but I will need to take some action.
Thanks,
please stop babbling away.

if you are serious in the fact that you are looking for help on here, hows about helping us out. clearly state what you are trying to acheive, what steps you are taking to acheive it and what errors you are receiving. pasting 1000's of lines of code with no explaination is not helping anyone.
give us a list:
- rom you are using
- what you are trying to do
- steps you have taken so far
- what you expected to see
- what you are seeing
- anything else that can be of assistance.
i cant believe that i am still trying to work you out, and that im still prepared to help. you clearly dont read any posts that ask you for more information, and generally you just reply with "i chmod teh world" type random comments.
help us to help you, or just stop posting.
tim.

J I spent several hours with you the other day and explained what was going on. You have continued to ignore me since and I even got clobbered over trying to help you out for the way I allegedly typed something..
Your question does not make any sense and the certificates do not make any sense either.. sorry but what kind of hospital are we talking about here?
This is really hard to understand or help when we don't know what you are even asking or what the issue is and really, you fail to listen to reason when provided by experts that have been professionally programming and engineering for close to 20 years.

Is this a passive aggressive attack at my reply? I assume so, as there are not other replies. Please enlighten me as to your issue. Though I do little these days, I used to build a lot of my own ROMs, along with flashing others. With each flash I made a script to extract (via adb) the desired apps, unzip the ROM, and place within the apps. Afterward, it would zip, sign, push to the phone, and flash. All that was required was a mouse click, and I did not have to have someone else's work (with that much access) on my phone. So, please tell me why you should give me a thumbs down.
It was not a stab at just you, just a random thought caused by a string of replies I had seen from various users in the shift forums upto and including yours.
Who cares if you find this application useful, obviously others(including the OP) have. I have no need to convince you to use this, and really have not used it nor plan to. How about instead of acting arrogant and listing a string of 'accomplishments' as if it adds weight to your OPINION about the usefulness of an app, you take that 'skill' and teach people to write a script similar to the one you felt so compelled to brag about writing?

I posted the script quite some time ago. I am not trying to be arrogant, it is just that I see all of the app put out that people really do not need (if they spend a few minutes learning how to work at the phone). But thank you for actually responding.
ditto
