That's what you get for copying quotes off facebook pages, peeps.
wow y would u even want to run windows mobile... I had a tmobile wing once - - - dont get me started on that phone lol.
lol im sry but even if i knew how i wouldnt tell ya cause its stupid idea.
why would you want windows mobile on your phone, well for decent media play back i.e films that you don't need to convert before you put on the phone, I've got both a android and windows phone, and personally I find the experience better on android, but converting films is a drag.
I don't see why you want to downgrade your phone
knowledge is power
I don't think this is such a bad idea actually it's kind of good for us having someone asking this...IS NOT ABOUT DOWNGRADING your beloved hero it's about the challenge it would be to do it and the KNOWLEDGE we would get by doing so...
Currently a lot of our great developers at XDA are focused on bringing android to our WM phones and they have done a great job so far using only reverse engineering methods, patience and a certainly huge amount of cups of coffee...so how about seeing things from a different angle? just imagine the possibilities if we can make WM work in an originally Android designed phone ,i bet you if someone dares to do it,not only the android porting project will benefit from this but several other open source mobile platforms that are already here[Maemo] and others to come [MeeGo], They all have one purpose bringing the end user a better and richer mobile experience which is the same reason i believe this forum was created for so...
Why not giving it a try?
up
up up up
sorry
android is a open source OS
windows mobile is not
so you can change android kernel to run on other device
windows mobile nope
I love android for this
I hate windows mobile for this
with a boot loader : you cant
and i know you don't want windows mobile on your brilliant android phone
hahaha
One time I saw a thread in the Rhodium forums where they were trying to find evidence of an Android user trying to port Windows Mobile to their phone. I didn't think it would ever happen...
Hmmm a challenge
Sounds like a great challenge, something to really upset the a few people who wander around bragging about they're "completed" operating systems (yeah right, 15 years as an IT Consultant and I've yet to hear Microsoft claim to complete anything).
Android is a PITA and not as flexible as I was told it would be - nowhere near as flexible as linux was meant to be - I wonder if its possible to go the rest of the way and compile a linux for our android phones that runs natively. Then we can really put windows phones to shame.

Well, of course it's possible, seeing how it's already been done. I don't know about your phone, but my CDMA Hero is most definitely running Linux natively.
So it's already running on a Linux kernel with a reasonable command line environment. It might be useful to compile a more complete set of GNU utilities for it.
Android is, in basic terms, just the GUI that's running on top of Linux. There are plenty of other GUIs designed for small devices with limited resources. Porting one of them over to run on top of the existing Linux environment shouldn't be too terribly tough.
The real trick, I would guess, would be getting all the hardware bits to work. Writing apps that can access the phone radio, gps, audio, etc.... All of those things are currently accessed through APIs that Android provides. If you remove Android, and those APIs, then there's a great deal of work to be done to make those things functional again.
So if you just want a handheld Linux box, that's easy. If you want all of the hardware features to work, and to still be able to use it as a phone, just with Android stripped out, then you've got a LOT of work ahead.
they have already ported android to win mobile it is possible to reverse see as win mobile does not have alot of anti piracy safeguards

Maybe if you wrote complete sentences with proper punctuation, this might parse.
well am with original poster on this I for one would love and prefer to see Winmo on my hero.... I find android such a dam pain.... I have both winmo(on my kaiser) and android... But only use droid for a toy and playing games. where as I much prefer my winmo for Work and navigation... At least with Winmo theres no reliance on flippin data, Which isa pain in the butt with droid..
So come on you tech Geeks show us what you are made of...Port Winmo to hero... let us have the choice...
WM On Hero.......
say what you will about Android Vs WM but I believe WM is just perfect for me. If hero could support WM then please someone anyone help me get it on mine. I loved the convenience of WM. On my Blackstone Sync was not a problem. I get all my emails and my contacts in the same place. With Android I have to sync via G-Mail. For being open source this is a huge price for me to pay. Now I have to change my email address and redirect all my clients to G-mail so I get all my mail.

why would you want that? the youtube client from htc is almost perfect, psptube is bugged and doesn't even support HQ videos
HTC YouTube is not that great (and only for YouTube). I've personally grown to hate HTC and it's apps. People have been spending so much time porting components from different devices/ROMs that real development has stopped for many great apps (I miss HS++ most...). For this reason I refuse using anything from HTC (also since I have a Samsung phone it feels morally wrong).
WVD works in a similar way to PSPTube (browses the online videos and parses the links to an external player). But PSPTube has the advantage of flexibility since anyone why the know-how can add and update website support even without the app sources... This was something I suggested many times to JM81 (but his huge hiatus in the forum makes me believe he left the scene).
Makku12 was going on a similar direction with Tube8 viewer but there hasn't been many news lately either...
Anyway I fear this thread will either be moved/closed or get buried by other threads (just wanted to share my 2 cents before that happened)... Utterly it's the fate of almost every request thread since most unfortunately there aren't many willing skilled devs in the platform anymore (the few ones left are generally already engaged in some project).

This project may be wearing a window 6 and later for the win mobile 7 and even for Android.
I am NOT looking forward to the ICS update. I use Flash all over the place in my browsers. Everything from animated local radar feeds to youtube vids (I hate the youtube app) to FB games, I use it quite a lot. Most of you already know Adobe is discontinuing their support for their mobile Flash plugin (No support after Android 4.0.9). And I see Flash isnt working even on a lot of hand sets with 4.0.3. Just blank screens or an Error saying you need to instal even though you reinstalled like 3 times. HTML5 or not, theres still a LOT of pages and apps that rely on Flash to work. You cant just suddenly yank it out of users hands. Give people the support to continue to view Flash on their favored websites while the HTML5 transition slowly occurs. What they are doing is irrational..more irresponsible and corporate bullish. Of course this move needs to occur, but suddenly dropping support while an entire web of Flash content remains and not to forget the forced OTA updates into versions of Androis that Flash dont even work on........really Adobe?... :/
Sorry..just a rant
Works fine on the leak, why would it change?

Honestly, the faster the internet is rid of flash, the better. It's outdated and often takes a lot of system resources. It's time for the open formats to take advantage.

Any modern browser on all the same systems will support HTML5 all the same. Do you honestly think flash is gonna last much longer with Adobe coming out in support of HTML5?
“HTML5 is now universally supported on major mobile devices, in some cases exclusively,” Adobe VP Danny Winokur said in a clear reference to Apple’s rejection of Flash support on its dominant iOS devices: the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. “This makes HTML5 the best solution for creating and deploying content in the browser across mobile platforms. We are excited about this, and will continue our work with key players in the HTML community, including Google, Apple, Microsoft and RIM, to drive HTML5 innovation they can use to advance their mobile browsers.”
Now sure, HTML5 development has not progressed as all had hoped, but it's clear that everyone is looking to drop flash like a bad habit as soon as possible.
Seriously....HTML5 is slow. Look at the mobile Facebook site. Thats entirely based on HTML5. Glitchy and lags...at least it does for me. But regardless if FLASH has to be discontinued or not, it should be done in a smooth transition. My sis got the ICS update on her Droid Razor MAXX and Flash no longer works.
It works fine on the current ICS/Sense 3.6 leaks on the Rezound.

I don't use Facebook much and will probably delete it soon anyway. I just checked the mobile site and it seems to be a lot less glitchy than the damn dedicated Android app. I can rarely view a picture full screen in it.
But anyway, it should still be working for 4.0 devices. After searching around, it appears flash was intentionally disabled by Motorola in the MAXX update. The workaround is to delete or freeze an app called Flash Uninstall, then uninstall flash and reinstall. If her phone is rooted, you can try that out.
When I first flashed ICS I was having problems with flash not working also until I realized I had to enable it in the browser settings.
Lol? ICS has flash...?

Not trying to be a douche or anything but anytime that anybody posts anything about ics in the general section, you're always the first to jump on it saying, "It's just another ics thread" when this hasn't even been discussed before on this forum.

To give a little background info: I'm complete noob as far as android is concerned and I just bought moto e to get me started with android world.
I don't know about others but I certainly feel overwhelmed by shear magnitude of this world and feel little lost >.>
So, put it in one line, I wold like to get help from experts and maybe other people who also bought this phone or something similar to make my life little easier as going all gung ho in app store doesn't seem like a good approach to me, especially with low bandwidth net I've.
As I mentioned, this is my first Android phone and I would like to know about the ''free'' apps which I should install for following things.
Protection from virus/spyware/theft?
File browser if it can extend the capacity of default browsing system.
Web browser which performs well on low bandwidth but is also decent.
Social networking apps (I've already installed Whatsapp as it was known to even gadget challenged person like me)
Ebook and PDF file reader.
Caller ID and call as well as voice recorder.
Those reviewers were not kidding when they said camera sucked on this phone, so if there any app to make it better/more useful?
App for sketching and drawing.
App for navigation (if there is need)
Small time games like racing and pool/snooker etc. I'm not really a game seaway so things on youtube looked too much for me .-.
Any other useful recommendations are welcome as well.
PS:
I did look for some other thread like this but I didn't find one so forgive me if this doesn't really live up to the forum standards, and feel free to delete/move it, if it doesn't. I apologize in advance.
Cheers!

Sorry about the section thingy, I saw the ''theme and app'' thing on the section header(?) so thought this would be the right place to go.
About the playstore, I'm browsing it, but its kind of difficult to separate whats useful from what not (being a newbie and all plus slow net kind of makes it difficult to try out everything, sorry if that sounds like an excuse). I guess, I was just looking for people who already use these and suggest the best.
I'm browsing the thread you linked so thank you for that.

Actually, anything that has human factor involved is a security risk, Linux or not. While Android OS itself might be very well secured, what you install on it makes world of difference (hence my reluctance), depending on sources. It is true that I'm noob to android gadgets, I'm very well familiar with Linux as that is what I use more than 90% of the time. On the Linux forum I'm frequent at, this topic usually causes ton of debate and after few good points it end with exactly what you said, so I wont fan that fire.lol Just wanted to know if there is one. And by the way, Virus=/=malware, virus is just one of the many forms of Malware. And even Linux is not ''that'' secure/immune from latter, its just less of a riped fruit to pluck, something contrary to its child; Android and hence the question.
When I said making cam better/more useful, it was more aimed at making its stock camera UI/app (w/e you may call it) a little more useful by adding more quality/functions or simply make came more easier to use with different UI, this has no bearings on camera hardware in question. I do apologize for wording this wrong in initial post though.
I'll install all your other suggestions, thank you very much for your patience. I appreciate it!

The only way you can be affected by a malware is if you install an infected/malicious app. If you stick with Play Store, the chances for that are minimal. Do not download apps from anywhere else and let Google verify it for you. Still if you're concerned there are plenty of antivirus apps on Play Store, use search button.
Also, try and read the description of an app before you install, see if it has the features you need. The ratings and reviews also help. Thats how learned it when I bought my first Android.
As for the camera UI, trust me, this is one of the best camera apps amongst stock ones. Its clean, simple and efficient. Still, if you wish to check some more, there are plenty on play store. You can try those. Camera 360, Perfectly Clear, for example. They will change the UI and have some cool after effects to apply.
@.glen First and foremost a warm welcome to the Droidland...
Antivirus> Not required at all/Avast
File Browser> ES File Explorer/Astro File Manager
Web Browser on low b/w> Opera Mini/UCBrowser
Video player> MX Player
These are the only apps available for your purpose and free...
No app will make your camera better...
Also try Nova Launcher...
Games> Angry Birds, Temple Run2, Subway Surfers, Jetpack Joyride, SSG2, Hill Climb Racing, Into The Dead, Cut The Rope2 to name a few...

Welcome to the fabulous world of android!:highfive:
I've compiled a list of apps along with their respective play store links. I hope you'd find them useful.
My two cents worth:-
File browser: I use CyanogenMod File Manager. Root Explorer(Paid), ES File Explorer, etc are decent options.
Web browser: Dolphin Browser-It supports flash. If you want to conserve data you might look into Opera Mini
Ebook and PDF file reader: Moon Plus Reader-IMHO this is the best app for this purpose. Free and Paid options are available
Communication: Viber is a good option. I prefer it over LINE,WE chat, etc
Some other apps I think you should have:-
For optimizing RAM usage/hibernating apps: Greenify
Ad-blocking: AdblockPlus or Adaway(needs root). For more info, look here.
Launcher: Nova Launcher
Media Player: MX Player-a must have!
App Backup:TitaniumBackup(needs root) or Helium
Thank you all! I've taken most of the suggestions and it has indeed made my life easier :3
If NVidia cooperated with Android x86 team to provide a way for end users to install the proprietary drivers, we will get full featured experience from our GPUs. I'm imagining a scenario of a root application or an application pre added to Android x86 and its forks that can download the needed files and place them in system. Also the kernel should be aware how to use the newly added driver. Nouveau and similar one for AMD actually degrades the performance too much. It also overheats and it won't work for all GPU cards. So I made a petition on change.com for this. We need +10k signatures so that we can contact NVidia and AMD to help the android x86 team achieve the change and be able to use the drivers. This petition can change the future of remix OS. We will play ALL games with the highest possible performance. Please people sign this petition, it will take less than a minute. Any suggestions are welcomed.

Look. When was the last time a company was coerced into doing something via a petition? Your effort is laughable. You gather a bunch of teenage kids to sign a fragment of text online hoping rocket science companies will even look at you. NVidia? Really? Asking for open source drivers for Remix OS? Who is Remix OS again? Why don't you stop the non sense and just buy a Google supported device - a chromebook or a chromebox, which will have the Android Play Store in a month anyway. Supported HDMI audio, accelerated graphics, native screen resolution, printing - out of the box.
Why do you Linux guys like to be so sadistic I will never understand. All I read on your forums is how to make your hardware work. Don't you ever get bored of this? Scrap your PC - it's 2016. PCs are falling, Windows is falling. You have no need for a PC. Get a chromebook, officially supported by Google, and get on with your life on a fully working device.

It is clear that you have no respect for other peoples' hobbies, at least in this case.
Take the thing that you like to do the most, and that you get the most pleasure from doing, and think to yourself that some people would tell something along the same lines of what you had posted here, and you may understand.
I assure you, there is no sadism here (or maschoism), but instead a passion for computers.
While I personally do not think that they will listen, it's worth a try, miracles do happen.
Please do not take this too harshly, I only wanted you to understand the situation and the gravity of what you had posted, not to start a feud.

I already have a MacBook with everything working out of the box. I'm trying to make remix work on my old laptop, and there is nothing wrong with this. It already has Windows 10 working blazing fast and stable. We - the linux community - find it interesting to 'make things work'. This is our hobby. I don't know why are you replying here, I mean your reply has nothing important. Remix OS is getting more fame and will be competing Windows soon. Please do respect that we are trying to make it work on our devices regardless if NVidia is a large company in comparison to Jide. Learn how to respect others before commenting or replying in XDA please. This place wasn't made for this.
Also did you read the Petition first? It states that we want a way to install the proprietary drivers. I didn't mention we want them open sourced LOL
OK honestly I was not expecting these answers. Indeed, the magic word is hobby. I would never waste my time with old devices. I simply find them obsolete. Hell, I find PCs obsolete now that chromebooks get the android play store. My understanding was that you guys simply want android apps on a desktop PC - and we will have that very soon, like...next month or so in a fully supported official google package. I want that. But you - you want something else. You simply want to tinker with your PCs and you will do that with any occasion. I get that and I respect that.
But as for me, Remix OS, Windows, Linux - whatever, that's not for me. I ran Linux, several distros, I ran Windows, I ran them enough. I need a simple, easy to use, unbreakable device - like a mobile phone, but on a large screen. And I want the android apps ecosystem. But I had enough tinkering. I want something that works. It's 2016 and I've been tinkering for 20 years now. I had enough. I will go the official google devices way. I don't want to loose my time on forums because my NVidia card does not work.

I understand how you feel, since I had met many people who went that way.
There's nothing wrong with that, but please don't try forgetting that other people like to use their devices in different ways, whether just using, trying to make (or break) things, trying to to own them, etc..
What is important is that we enjoy whichever way we chose, and that what needs to get done is done.
