[Q] Location Service on View - HTC Flyer, EVO View 4G

I am running the stock HC from sprint on my view. I have s-off and everything.
This is only a Wi-Fi Device. I really like the stock rom. I'm use to sense. I'm getting irritated because the weather widget never displays my location. It will display the city name for a few minutes then say current location instead of my city. Is there anything I can do about this or is this because I'm using this as a Wi-fi only device?
thanks in advanced!

Do you have GPS enabled? I'm only using mine WiFi only as well, with GPS enabled, and it doesn't have any problems showing my current city.

I’m having the same problem and I see (as I am) you’re located in the Atlanta area.
It could be a tower problem. At this time they are working on the system in preparation for the LTE rollout.

Cool, i'm in Norcross.
Are you using it as a wifi only device also? I feel like that might have something to do with it. Weather service works perfectly fine on my HTC Amaze, I don't have a data plan on that either just wifi

Yes I have a wifi only Flyer tethered to my EVO. The EVO is reporting the proper location. Somehow that tower info is not being passed on to the Flyer.
If I drive a few miles and hit another tower it works.
Edit: The location service only uses the tower info … probably set up that way as some phones don’t have gps

GPS / Weather Problem

Every HTC device I've used, up to and including the Sensation, has had no problem localizing my weather to the city I'm in.
The EVO 3D for some reason will only round it down to the province though...however, Google Maps has no problems with accuracy.
Any ideas?
Looks like stock weather app isn't triggering the GPS at all (can tell because the GPS icon doesn't appear at all for it).
Any ideas why? Must be a bug.
I have the same problem with mine, I use an airave at home and it's about ninety miles off. I think the phone uses agps or something similar for the weather app.
On every other HTC I've owned, upto and including the Sensation, the weather app automatically triggered true GPS to find my actual location for weather purposes.
no problems here
I have no idea why is been working great here, even when I go to work (diferent cities) or when I went to my California trip, weather will changed to where the city I was driving by or wtv
If you don't have an Evo3d well you don't have an Evo3d
Very Nice.
I assume you guys are all on the Sprint version?
Keep in mind I'm on the newly launched HSPA Rogers version.

GPS Lock Issues

Does anybody else have GPS locking issues? I'm having intermittent problems with my GPS. Sometimes it will lock almost instantly and be flawless
Other times though it will take up to a minute to lock. After it locks it will drop my location after a couple of minutes too.
Can't find the root cause of the issue. Restarts and toggle airplane mode won't fix it. It seemed to be working all the time when I first got the phone. I don't want to factory reset to see if it will fix it either.
Does GPS have anything whatsoever to do with a data connection? Is it in any way related to Verizon network issues of late? FYI I'm always on 4g. I'm noticing patterns of certain areas causing me problems more frequently.
If you are using assisted location then yes, if you lose data you will lose GPS.

Not true. I have used GPS status (on an inc), where I had ZERO service and it pinpointed my exact location perfectly (checked on a 1:24000 map using utm).

This phone and the Inc are 2 completely different devices and have different antenna's as well as how they connect to various networks including satellites. If he is using ASSISTED GPS, like I said, he is using the network, not satellite signal. If the network is down, guess what?
GPS has been great so far. GPS was great on my EVO but horrible on the EVO 3d. ....

Well I've checked it again, with a 1:24000 map and Google earth on a comp, against known coordinates, with WiFi off, and no service. It's accurate to a couple meters. This rezound is great GPS, if you are trying to use the network as GPS, you are pissing up a rope. use the built in satellite function for it.

So far NO gps issues.

weird speedtest locations?

Just wondering if anyone has tethered to a pc, ran a speedtest, and it shows you in another state?
I'm in San Francisco,CA and it's saying I'm in Wichita, KS...
?
Im running the latest Clean Rom if that matters, and only google gps is on
Happens to me all the time too, I never get decent speedtest locations because of it, I'm guessing it's a 4G connection thing.
The fix I have to do to get a test from close to me is connect to a wifi source, let it find that location, then stay in the speed test app and turn wifi on back to 4G and keep it on the location wifi found.
I believe if you turn on the GPS and let it get a lock it will update to your nearest server. Whats up in Wichita? I seem to travel there all the time
Edit: Re-read OP. Not sure what you mean by "google" GPS but I was talking about insuring that the actual GPS receiver is activated. And, BTW, your boys better win those 3 games they have "in-hand".
are you sure you are not in Wichita,KS? ARE YOU!?!
Thanks everybody, nothing wrong with Kansas, kinda a Jayhawk fan.. Il mess around with gps locks and whatnot, just wanted to see if I was the only one

lol, yeah, if they don't make the playoffs, they will be ripped apart and traded away... I dont mind either way
Location finding can take several routes...
via provider towers: this is the one that generally has you in your neighborhood, or part of town, but never the right street.
via gps: dead on.
via wifi: usually dead on if your routers mac address has been sniffed/mapped out by those google cars and other 3rd parties that pick up signals all over town and pinpoint their locations.
via ip: generally pretty good in getting your region, but if the ip isn't in the big database in the cloud accurately it'll just say 'USA' and puts you in Wichita, KS because that's pretty close to dead center of the US
I use the phone's GPS and I still get stuck out in Lexington, KY, or Wichita, so I do the fix I did on he first page and it fixes it.

Back to being in Nashua...

Back on my skyrocket, my phone would think I was in Nashua NH, I thought it had something to do with the custom beta version of ICS I was using.
But I am seeing the same thing happening on my S3. A bit of info: I am on at&t in Dallas, TX. I get LTE at home in mesquite, and still pick it up while at work in Irving.
While at home it correctly puts me in mesquite, but at work it tries to tell me I'm all the way in New Hampshire. It's not just one app, any app that uses cell tower location info says the same thing. It's a minor annoyance, if I really need location based services I can just turn on gps, but I used to love my weather widget changing between home and work, without the need for gps.
I should also mention that if I drop down to regular 4G, location information works correctly again. And it's only in Irving I have this happen, the minute I'm back in Dallas, it's working once more.
Considering this phone is still stock, I'm thinking it has something more to do with the tower put here. Any advice would be awesome.

Sounds like you're getting assigned an IP address from a DHCP pool that is defined in NH. I would assume that since LTE is still very much in the "beta" phase of rolling out, that things like this will be common until more of the LTE network is stood up and stable.
The funny thing is that there is no LTE coverage in Nashua, NH

Is it True or BS that EVO LTE will have a fix for LTE connection issues?

I really like this phone but want to make sure that the LTE connection issues are able to be fixed with a software update. I hope Sprint isn't BS'ing on this. I have a couple of days to return the phone and want to make sure this is fixable before deciding to keep it.
Anyone know if the Sprint rep who said it's a software issue is telling the truth or BS?
At heart it is a good radio. No reason it shouldn't work as it's supposed to. So, the majority of the issue is software. And it is fixable. Maybe just as good as S3 and iPhone 5 LTE reception?
The big question here is if Sprint will actually fix it this time. Know that there were fixes for LTE in 2 previous ota's. To what extent they worked on it before, idk. Thinking that this time is make or break it.
So, the answer is wait and see. U can get out of contract if LTE doesn't work for u though. It's apart of your service plan. Gonna require persistence on your part to get out after the 14 days is up, but u can do it.
If I were u and needed a good LTE capable phone, I'd go with the S3. Because at this point, it is up in the air if it will receive LTE like it should in the near future.
Correction first update was wifi, second was lte lol
Hope so. Has to be software related since both this and the s3 have the same radio. And, since the airplane mode on/off trick gets it working, I'm lead to believe its software.

Airplane mode trick???
I really hope they can fix this. I decided to keep the phone after looking at the S3 screen and build quality I just couldn't switch. I really love the screen on this!! It is just as good as my wife's iPhone 5 in color reproduction. The S3 is nice but don't like PenTile as I can notice it and I don't like it when whites have a blue color to it.
The Evo LTE has the same SoC as the S3. If the Evo was having hardware problems with LTE so would the S3, but that is not the case (according to what I have been able to look up). Therefore it can be concluded that the LTE issues are software and not hardware.

AKA Airplane Mode Dance
If you are in an LTE area and your phone is stuck on 3G, or if your phone is on LTE and it drops back down to 3G, then toggling Airplane Mode ON and back OFF will make the radio scan and re-latch to LTE.
That's the problem with our EVOs, it's an LTE threshold and handoff problem.
I live right on the edge of LTE coverage, so my phone will handoff to 3G because it decides the LTE signal is too weak. The problem is, in my area a "weak" LTE signal is MUCH faster than a strong 3G signal. If I go into my radio options and choose "LTE only" it will hold LTE signal all day long. So the signal is there, albeit weak.
What we need is a software fix that will change our radio's signal threshold so that it will prioritize a weaker LTE signal over 3G.
I'm tired of doing the airplane mode dance. If LTE is available, I want my EVO to latch on and stay on it even if it's weak.

I use to get spotty LTE here in san Antonio so I thought it was the radio. But now I've been getting it pretty consistantly everywhere. So now I'm starting to think its there towers or something

Using a Sense ROM, open your phone dialer and type *#*#4636#*#*
Select "Phone Information" then scroll down to "Preferred Network Type" and that should give you the option you're looking for

Or download the app "network" from playstore. Let's u do the same thing while less obtrusive and gives u more options.

Thanks guys! Installing app now and have the data code saved for a rainy day as well
Edit : after switching to lte only, I get no data (voice or sms) but im able to run a speed test using 4g. I live in L.A. but I connect to an Albuquerque, New Mexico server I'm not sure what else I'm to do to enable lte only and keep data
It's NOT true for me that switching it to LTE only will keep it connected. I still only keep the connection for about 10 seconds and then it goes back to 3G. My understanding is that option in both *#*#4634#*#* and ##DATA# is "preferred mode." It will drop back to 3G.
And I know for sure that Sprint and HTC have an open ticket on this issue of aquiring and keeping an LTE signal. They will eventually get a fix out for it.
I used the network tool post earlier and set mine to cdma/lte... So I get 4g and voice/text.. no evdo. Which is fine by me because evdo sucks anyway lol.
Works great I now can keep 4g in my house like my gfs gs3 and not switch back to crap-do

This has completely corrected the issue for me.
