I'd like to hear from anyone that uses Fourth Bar Sense or anyone who has used the Bravia Engine that has been posted in the Dev section.
Is there much difference?
Would you like to see this in Fourth Bar Sense?
My first impression having not used it is that it probably slows the system down and uses more battery life because it isn't adding hardware, its just running EVERYTHING through some algorithm to make it look better. Let me know if you think otherwise!
Haven't tried it myself but I did read some comments from others that it made virtually no difference.

I notice no difference at all, even after paying close attention to details etc it still makes no difference. I wouldn't bother adding it if I was you

What's the general consensus between these ROMs?
ChocolateEclair seems to score higher in benchmarking tests, but VillainROM seems to have more of a following behind it.
Which is more stable, and are there any major problems to note with either?
Thanks!
PS... Still can't wait for my Hero to arrive. 3Store are being stupid and such, so it's taking a long time for it all to go through, but I'll get there eventually!

If I'm not mistaken, chocolateeclair is a vanilla ROM, which means it lacks many of the HTC sense user interface elements. But this also makes it faster, as HTC sense consumes some resources.
VillainROM is a full Sense ROM, so it has all the HTC apps and visuals etc, although it sometimes appears slower on benchmarks.
But either way, if you install SetCPU and overclock to a sensible level, (and even without overclocking), both will be sufficiently fast that you shouldn't feel any sluggishness or lag in either.
I am sure others can clarify the differences beyond my thinking it's vanilla vs. sense
I haven't tried ChocolateEclair yet. Though I have to say based upon recent benchmarks I'd love to try it out.
It is true that VillainROM does have a greater following and they also have a developed team working on bug fixes and assistance with any issues which may crop up.
Personally i'd try both if I were you. Spend a week or so on each one and decide then.
As for major problems, you'll have to read up on that. In all honesty there will probably be a few minor issues with each one, it just depends on whether those issues affect you or not. As i said there is no better way to find out than through personal experience.
Enjoy.

Hehe, unfortunately you are mistaken VanillaEclair is the vanilla rom made by the same user. ChocolateEclair is his sense alternative, through it also comes with LauncherPro.
I have no idea how he has customized it to be so fast (particularly on boot time) but as I said i'm intrigued.

LOL. That just proves there's now too many similar sounding ROMs
Is it odexed or deodexed? That could be a contributing factor to boot speed, certainly first boot. I know also that VillainROM will zipalign any unaligned apps, which speeds up the ROM in use, but it might slow down boot if you install any unaligned apps which would slow it down in the first place.
But yeah, I think i'm getting pretty badly confused now between roms. Usually roms with eclair in their name are vanilla, dunno why...
Right okay. So it's really just a case of pick and choose then.
I'm guessing that it's basically choosing between a little bit of speed and a little bit of stability, alongside the differences in feature-sets?
Also, being a complete and utter n00b, could you tell me what "odexed", "deodexed' and "zipalign" mean?
And another, somewhat unrelated question is: how does battery life cope, standard and with a custom ROM? Surely it can't be worse than the damned one-day-only battery in my iPhone.
I'm already impressed by Android, just because of how hackable it is. Can't wait to get started!
If I am not mistaking, villainrom has done some nice things to make the rom customisable, for instance control over the sense interface.
In terms of speed and stability on the other hand, VR "loses" from ChocolateEclair (v2.0 by now), which is just blazing fast and stable.
Now ultimately, if Villainrom and ChocolateEclair could date, merry and get children... You would most likely have the unchallenged ultimate Sense rom for the HTC Hero .
And ehhh, do you really want to know what those terms mean? It think this link here will help you a lot ...

Well timed too, exactly at the moment I find a problem in my current installation . Still though, VillainRom... Still reminds me of batteryproblems and other small problems...
I'll give it a thought though.
Or shall we go for the experiment... FroyoVillain is just released
Hi all.. erasmux the file says that has been removed.. where can i find it??
thanks!!
So since there's only about 5 or 6 custom ROM's at the moment I took the liberty of creating a quick site to compare the ROM's. I put them in a comparison table side-by-side, put a link to download them (off my own site [so this can be used as a mirror]) and put a link to my own personal thoughts/semi-informal review of each ROM and included screen-shots of the ROM (90% of it I took myself).
I wanted to share the link/site with you to see what you think. I'm going to try and stay on top of updates and such, and each page on the site has a way for you to leave a comment. So if you have any suggestions or problems, feel free to comment there (or here). Also, if you want to submit your own review, thoughts, suggestions, etc. the site has a way for you to post it and I can look it over and publish it. I'd love for this not to be a one man show. If you have extensive experience with one of the ROM's and want to throw in your own review, post it there and I'll make it live and link to it in the comparison table.
I know I'm going to get blasted, told how stupid and useless the site is, etc. etc. and I'm prepared for that, but maybe you could also include a quick note on why it's stupid, what I need to add, how better to improve it, etc. you know, constructive criticism. I do know it's ugly and using a crappy default skin, but I was more concerned on getting content in there right now vs the look and feel of the actual thing; I'll get around to it, eventually. Anyways, I'm only trying to help.

Thank you, this is very helpful to a newcomer to Android. I'll try to find time to read through the reviews, as I want to find the right ROM without the hassle of flashing each one (but I guess you'll never know which one works best for you unless you try it...). The comparison table helps a lot.
Nice compilation! Was worth a read! Thanks for gathering all these into one
This is awesome! Many thanks. I had asked to setup something similar a while back with all the Galaxy Tab ROMs. Never took off. I can definitely see that this could take a bit of work keeping it current. Hopefully folks will help out in that area.
i like the work u did...
Thanks for this! Really helpful to new guys.
Serendipity is at 8.1; added the file to the server, updated the Download link and included his changes in the table. It's all good.
i dont think that site is stupid at all. I think it'll help a lot of the newbies but that takes a lot of work to update. As long as it stays updated, I dont see how anyone can say that its a bad idea.
One issue that the devs MIGHT have is that you saved their ROMs and update files to your own server. I know some devs dont like that (at least some on the captivate section didn't) but maybe thats different, here.
Really nice to see all the listed items in there, I know it would be hard to list them all but but maybe point out in the CM7 section more (if not including all seperately) the Modifications, Theme Chooser, Etc. that are built into CM7 by design without the need for more apps, rom tweaks. Also note that the CM7 camera does not have the same options as stock and how the video recording rate is not the 30 fps as with the stock roms. I am trying to be impartial here but thought I would note that looking at your site would make some think CM7 didn't have much to it, when in fact it has many options and setting built in that are not available to stock roms or how stock roms would need some other changes to get things to work the same. On another note the ONLY downfall I see with CM7 is the contact searching would be nicer to have a letter on the side.of the screen like stock does so I don't have to scroll all the way down to find a contact and would be nice to have speed dial working without another app from the market.
Just trying to point out a few plus's and minuses of CM7 to help you add to your great comparison site.

Nice work -- the only suggestion I would make is that UnNamed's section is huge compared to the others - so unless you are specifically recommending that one, you may want to equalize the columns.
But other than that -- I think a very helpful resource for folks who are new to the phone looking to get a quick comparison of which ROM to try first!
@RockRatt can I use some of your wording in my review? I'll update my CM7 section/review but you wrote a lot of nice ideas.

Of course you can. I am just trying to help out so others can see all the different roms in a somewhat even light as to function and features. I know it is/will be a work in progress and it is looking good.

I'm not sure if Geeklog has wiki features, but if it does maybe you could give some people editing rights in order to help you keep it up to date. Less work for you.
otherwise, excellent work!

I know everyone says to flash them all and find out what you like but i have some questions...i know the main difference is the UI between them all but what about the things in the background?.....
Performance?
Scripts?
Battery Life?
Features?
Options?
Customization?
Camera/camcorder function (interface/hd video)?
Thanks guys!

I am not trying to come off as a **** so sorry if it seems like that.
its just that for someone to actually answer every one of those questions in depth and compare EACH of our available roms will take a LOT of time for something that can be found out fairly quickly as u said "just flash and try"...
A nandroid before starting will make checking them all out less hasseling if u don't.enjoy them...
But u could also just download the roms and use something like root explorer to go thru the system apps and check system/etc/init.d to see scripts being included and find out pretty much everything u want to know(except battery life...which.is subjective anyways depending on your personal usage preferences making it hard for anyone to really say which has "better" battery....not like we have custom kernels to go with the roms to improve battery/performance so there's only so much we can squeeze out of it)
I would love to sit here and explain the differences between roms on each thing.u ask but the.post would probably be about 10x as long as this one is
What I CAN say about all your questions is I feel like ALL our roms show a nice improvement over the stock equivalent
Thanks! I've been reading a bit on all of them but all I really found was UI differences. That's why I posed the question about behind the scenes. Thanks for the info though.
Sent from my DROID X2 using Tapatalk
And thank YOU for not taking offense
I wish I COULD answer all of those. Lol
But as I'm sure you know each rom has its benefits with the "behind the scenes" scripts/tweaks and such.
the thing about each.of those tweaks is that the dev who put them into their rom as they saw fit because they feel those are the mods that make the most of their rom.
And then on top of that we have a few mods/tweaks we can make (like build.prop edits or tweak those scripts) as WE feel benefits each of us depending on our usage and what we looking.for.
I tend to try and.keep the tweaks the dev instituted tho and altering then slightly sometimes rather than going and say, flashing speedy scripts to replace them. Sure they might benefit some but most of the tweaks in those scripts have usually been implemented somewhere by the dev and.if not then they felt it wasn't really needed to make the rom better. That's just my opinion tho. Some people swear by using certain tweaks across all roms and that's just fine also.
The BEST part about.all of this is that at least we can experiment somewhat to find what we like
now just imagine what would be available to us if we had unlocked bootloader. This would be considered probably THE BEST 3g phone available. But until then we are stuck wondering if we will be.locked in a cage forever. But at least we have.some.nice roms and stuff to mess with
I will say that I really do enjoy Eclipse 1.2. Battery life is alright, which may just be something that is a user or, I D 10 T error. FOr me it has been a learning experience having come from a DX, which apparently is way different haha.
Apparently increases the speed of the device by simply blocking on read of /dev/random...

well, according to this, it does:
"Update!
Version 1.1 attached. This version uses the release signature, so you will need to uninstall the old XDA version first!
This version fixes the issue some users were seeing on later Jellybean ROMs, where the UI would misreport the RNG service status.
Note that this APK is actually compatible with all Android versions, and all (armel) devices. It's not at all specific to the Captivate Glide.'
This was in the link. The OP from this link wrote that^

IDK, it would be nice if it's true. Maybe someone with a DNA can give it a shot.
I've been running it for a few days, no real benefit. I thought it was working better at first but I'm pretty sure after a few days that it was just placebo.
How was your battery life?
Only the older member will remember this...

Reminds me of the days when people would run 386to486.exe and claimed it was making their crappy 386 run faster. It was just a simple program that would sleep and spit some text out saying it was improving your computer while not doing anything at all, but people swore their system was faster!

Has anyone in this forum been able to successfully theme or port aosp settings on a sense rom? I know its been done numerous times on ICS but do you guys know of any for 4.1 or 4+?
Or hell if the ICS version would work on sense 4 with or without a little bit of modding?
Not exactly sure where to start but I'm familiar with VTS and whatnot... Any help would be GREATLY appreciated

Also I have seen pictures of an inverted sense settings (white text on black) but the dev never posted like he said he was going to, anyone have that.
Let me know if you want it... I'm using it on rebelrom ... Sense 4+, 3.17
Of course I'll credit him for everything, as this was a lucky find on my part

I will make the bold assumtion that you are referring to me...
I did post, but only for ICS. It was an utter mess and I gave up on it for JB.
InflatedTitan PMed me and this is my reply, just in case somebody might want to take it from where I left it (basically goiung through all the sense apps that create dialog windows or find the xml where this is controlled (probably in un compilable com.htc.resources.apk or even worse (but unfortunately very likely with htc...) in various different locations).
Hi InflatedTitan
Well, as far as porting goes, I have not done it on sense 4 and I don't know what it takes.
As for the settings.apk, I successfully themed it to look as AOSPish as it gets. Only, there where so many issues as I had to change the color of the text from black to white, that many dialog windows which had a white background where messed up. I then spent some time to find the respective files, xmls that control these dialogs but actually never found them. In the end I settled for what I have now, AOSP style but based on sense.
The major problem is that we can't properly de- and recompile the com.htc.resources.apk, where most of the necessary changes have to be made. So the basic process was to check the settings.apk for references to that file and then change them to somewehre we can edit, like framework-res.apk. It takes a lot of time and some understanding how Android works to get this done properly. I then also pushed some files to com.htc where I had to. You know, htc's software is very very messy, there is no direct logic to most of it and they have so many redundancies it actually just makes you want to cry out loud No wonder all the sense versions so far where an utter bloat. Ahhh, just imagine another htc nexus...
I made some documentation here, but it's a bit of a mess.
It outlines all the things I changed (to keep track) and whether the changes actually did someting (green) or not.
Unless you have a lot of time on your hands, I would stay away from it. I am a perfectionist and I just felt it was not worth the effort. And that was quite some time ago, when the One X still was still a relatively new device...
