[Q] Any AT&T wireless Reps can help? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When visiting my folks over holiday, I noticed the cell phone bill was higher than it should be. Curious I checked it out and it shows that on one of the lines, they were being charged $9.99 for mobile purchases (at&t navigator it seems). The charged goes as far back as August 13, 2010! They were charged that each month. They never use data, I even put a data block on their lines long time ago too to make sure they don't accidentally use any data.
So basically they were subscribed to this service anyways without knowing or even using it or even having the ability to use it (since i enabled data block). It must have been activated when they got the line, it was a feature feature phone, I know at&t navigator comes preinstalled on these feature phones.
So my question is, for anyone working at AT&T that can help, is there any way to dispute these charges that went unknown and goes back to 2010? Is there anything we can do?

All it has to be is opened once and the. It is activated after the first free 30 days. You can try and get them to remove it but the best you could really hope for is that they remove the charges back to when you blocked the data. Call them up and ask for a manager right from the start.

Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks

So I got my issue resolved. you were right, they credited me from the moment i enabled data block to the present, so that's 7 months.
If anyone has issues, instead of hitting CS phone first, I recommend you contact support via twitter. they responded to my tweet pretty quickly. i posted at night, the responded in the morning, sent me a DM to confirm my ID, and then called me to let me know they reviewed my account and will credit me back.

AT&T vs T-MOBILE

Hi:
Up until now, I have been using T-Mobile ever since the XDA came out.
Used a "visorphone" before that. I do NOT use T-Mobile's Internet access (T-zones) ever since I got hit with a $180+ overage charge the first month I used it.
So.
Here is my issue:
Starting a few months ago, I noticed that, even though I do NOT use T-Mobile for any Internet access (I call up my own ISP instead from the XDA), T-Mobile are charging me something like $.50 for every email sent or received from the XDA using my own ISP. I suppose they monitor the traffic or something. When I protested that they shouldn't charge me for anything Internet-related, only the minutes used to call my ISP, they told me basically that they don't give a damn what I think, and that I will continue to be charged $.50 for every email. They show up on my bill as "e-note" to the phone number "500."
I think that's ridiculous and possibly illegal since it doesn't involve their servers or their services at all, but I don't have the energy to deal with their untrained "Wireless Data Group." It would take years to explain this to them. Just getting them on the phone took over 1 hour. This is partly a warning post, that this is what T-Mobile is doing, and we should know about it. So, I am looking into switching to AT&T.
My questions for anyone reading this:
1) anyone else have that billing issue with t-mobile?
2) is at&t any better? do they charge for internet traffic even if you haven't signed up for their services?
3) i don't think i have simlock issues, the unlock util from this site says that it's already unlocked. rom is 4.00.21 ENG, radio stack 6.24.00
from yorch.net.
4) is there anything i should know? won't this t-mobile build of "windows mobile 2003" rom work with at&t ?
any info appreciated, you can email thomas at pullen.com (removed the @ for the spam bots).
thanks!
TMO is pretty bad, iv experienced their levels of ignorance too, but once in a while, u can incounter sumone who knows alot about what they do
you should have never used tzones (if it wasnt unlimited) for transfering big amounts of data, thats why u got charged so much, for going over the allowd data amount
when connecting to your own ISP, are u connecting using THEIR # ? ... if so, then i dont know where TMO gets these ideas 4 charging u extra + the phone call
to unlock u need to go back to a 2002 rom, with the unlock software
ur build will work, but it would be better to switch to 4.00.05 , since u wont need all the useless TMO apps and what not
Hey tpullen,
Sorry to hear about your terrible time with T-Mobile.
Q: What type of plan do you have with T-Mobile?
If its only a voice plan with no data the .50 sounds about right and will be the same if you move over to AT&T. As a matter of fact AT&T's data charges are higher.
It doesn't matter that you're calling your own ISP, the fact still remains you're sending/receiving data on a voice only plan.
HTH
thanks
hey:
thanks for the replies. to answer your questions:
i had the t-mobile 3,000 minutes for $49 plan. it is only free long distance for the southeast u.s.; i think it's called a 'neighborhood' plan.
no data at all in my plan; i would call my own isp and surf the web and check email. only about 3 months ago t-mobile started charging me to check email, but not for the web. my complaint is that i am using my own isp, and the call comes out of my minutes. yes, it's sending data with a voice-only plan, but hey! i have a dial-up phone line, nothing fancy, a land line in my house. it's voice-only. if i plug a modem into my home phone line and call my isp, should i expect to get a bill from my phone company for every email i look at? to my way of thinking, and anyone is free to disagree, if i'm not USING your services then i don't want to PAY for your services. unless it is a t-mobile email, web, or proxy server i'm talking to, i don't expect to pay t-mobile. the minutes were already being deducted from my available minutes. that's all i should have to pay.
i don't think that's so outrageous.
i did unlock my phone with the xda dev build, then went back to the same tmobile windows mobile 2003 build. i wasn't sure if the xda "stays unlocked" once you unlock it and then put a new rom on, but it does.
now i have an at&t sim, and it works well enough, but the sort-of-funny thing is that you apparantly can NOT just call your own isp with at&t.
i can't seem to get a connection to work. so i don't know. maybe i will stay with at&t since they, according to their sales literature anyway, have a data network that's like 3 times faster than t-mobile's data network.
of course it's more $ for them.
whatever the case, i have 30 days to try at&t with no obligation, cancel any time, owe them nothing. everyone has that option right now, in fact, due to the new ftc "local number port" thing happening.
i'll let ya'll know how it goes if i stick with at&t. i can always stay with t-mobile, but i'm not sure if that's a good idea.

Sounds like you're talking about the EDGE service. Yeah, like 4 times the cost of T-Mobile's unlimited plan. I think I'll stick to the cheaper slower service.

Owe them nothing?! You might want to read that literature again. You'll not pay a cancellation fee nor an activation fee, but you will owe them for the prorated amount of time you had service, and any other additional fees that you use. This is pretty standard in the wireless industry. So if you go over your prorated minutes for the month, you owe them airtime charges. Happened to me, so just be careful.
bye bye at&t
hi arkhangel:
yes, you are correct:
4. Every new customer gets a 30 day risk free trial. When you purchase a phone and activate service at an AT&T Wireless store or at attwireless.com, you can return your undamaged phone for a refund within the first 30 days and pay only for airtime and usage charges. It’s just one more way we can earn your trust.
so it is not without charge, and thank god i only made one 6-minute call.
as far as the EDGE network goes, it was so-so...i only viewed 2 webpages with it, they loaded pretty much as quickly as with any other data service over the xda...and the funny thing is that it consumed apparantly almost 2 mb to do so.
i am pretty frustrated now, the at&t customer service has been pretty rotten, but t-mobile isn't too great either.
i'm calling verizon next, to compare...

The phone is programmed to send an SMS to T-Mobile every time you reboot your PPCPE. These show up as e-notes to 500 just as you describe. Compare the timing of your email use vs. the timing of your reboots and see where the e-notes are coming from. I think you can purchase a bundle of a bunch (500?) of SMS messages (aka e-notes) for something like $2.99, so you could cap your cost that way.
You should also be aware that T-Mobile has gone to a flat rate for GPRS at $19.95 for unlimited internet. The comparable plan with AT&T is something like $80.

my thunderbolt upgrade issues

EDIT: i had a brain fart and did not search first so i apologize. what i will do is update this thread and monitor for any data connection issues.
just thought i'd share my ordeal trying to upgrade a line to this new phone. this whole thing took 3 thunderbolts and several useless verizon sales/techs (i will never purchase directly from a vzw store again, the staff i dealt with at 2 corp stores was completely inept).
purchase 1: i purchased a thunderbolt and upgraded my line in store and everything is working/provisioned according to the tech. i don't realize i am missing texts and data until after i get back to work since the tech said it would "fully activate" over the next few hours (wtf..... but ok, new device/service and the sales guy wanted to set my expectations low). 2 trips back to the store for a total of 3.5 hours and 2 new sims and they cant get data or text working on the phone.
purchase 2: new verizon store closer to work. talked to the sales guy and informed him of the issues i had prior. he says no problem, they must have had some issues. we definitely wont have them here. i tell him fine i will upgrade but i am not leaving until voice, data, and text are working 100%. he cant get text or data to activate either so he says i can leave and he can call me when its done (little problem with not having a phone though to receive the call....) end result they return the phone an and i am dinged the restocking fee because they dont want to return as a problem.
purchase 3: bestbuy..... my expectations already set super low, i ask them if they have problems activating tb's on upgrades..... they say no, but it could take a while to do the whole process. i told them of the issues i ran into at other stores and they said did the tech reset the phone or factory reset the phone after the initial activation? (bingo! only power resets through the gui although the sales guys at both vzw stores said they factory reset).
for anyone running into data activation/data drop issues, factory reset the phone (i had to do it twice). and it should be solid after that. i have been up and running for the last few hours without issue.
my tb is set to cdma + lte/evdo auto.
tl;dr: data problems? do a factory reset. 3g data/text/voice has been solid after this process. PITA? yes, but it seems to work.
So 24 hours later and there doesn't appear to have been a data drop. There are still some weird fc's with the browser though. And the market has fc'd as well.

I am surprised you paid the restocking fee. I would have told them to kiss my ass.
Sadly enough, the guys at Best Buy Mobile don't always get enough credit, sometimes they do have some real idiots working there, but some of those people know ten fold what a guy at a local single carrier shop will.
BBYM, since I used to work for one, makes you take detailed training before you are supposed to work in the department, doesn't mean its followed, but if someone has been in the department for awhile they will have.
Most carrier stores don't have a lot of training, if they do, it is only about their company, not 6-7 different companies, between post and pre paid.
The restocking fee was charged because they returned it as customer deactivated, not a programming issue. I had to call customer support from my cell to get the restocking fee credited to my account. So all told I lost 1.75 at that store (plus the time I spent there).
I originally went to BB to return something, not walk out with a new phone. I got sucked in by the cute girl who chatted me up while processing my return. I ended up keeping the return and getting a new phone... lol.

This worked like a charm...thanks

Dealing with TMO

I'm coming off the HD2 which other than WM never had a problem with, it was fully rooted running the latest Android builds.
I got the Amaze over the weekend and switched sims. I don't live in a particularly good area for tmo coverage so fired up the wifi and everything seemed good till I'm at work on Monday, no 4g or any data coverage. Called Tmo, incredibly frustrating experience dealing with their automated attendant, here's a tip, just keep telling it you want to UPGRADE, once it thinks you want to spend money it will pop you to a rep. So the rep tells me I need the new sim, ok, it's at home so when I get back pop that in, call 611, 15 minutes of dealing with the auto attendant, multiple I'm hanging ups until I say that magic word "upgrade". Get the sim activated, wait overnight, no data connection. Call 611 again, "upgrade" ok right over to a rep who tells me I also need a new data plan for $30 which is $6 more than I pay now, so OK what are you going to do the phone doesn't work as is, upgraded to the new data plan and now it does.
Arghh, hope this helps.
If you just say 'Cancel', the automated system will get you over to Customer Loyalty. They are the best group to deal with as they have access to everything and can make deals on phones, etc.
Is there a corporate store near you? I highly suggest you go to the store and try to find someone to speak to in person about your issues. They will resolve them. They can't cancel in the store, but they'd be more than happy to assist you.
I was wondering if T-mo offers employee discounts from other businesses. I have sprint now and will be leaving them soon and I work at Target so sprint gives me 20% off my monthly bill.

They do, but I don't know is they offer one for Target. They also offer AAA discounts.
Contact customer care and ask if Target has a discount available.
It's called MCSA and the reps have a list of all the corporate nodes available to customers. Often times your bill cycle will change to match those of the corporate node so that's something you have to bear in mind.
Had the same thing happen to all 3 HD2s that I upgrade from .. all running latest NAND androids
after the same frustration, it's an issue with the network,
finally I called like 4X
and one tech explained, it's going from HD2 (which is WM) to ANDROID (even though it had android on it) so we powered down the WEB(DATA) on my plan, "changed it over", powered down my phone and turned it back on and DATA is working fine since then,
MIND you, it was working fine day one, I also went to work, it was working fine(well i thought since I was online but with wifi) I didn't noticed until like 20 minutes into my drive I got no emails (I get emails from work like every 2mins)
thats when I started calling TMO
***update, (got 3 different contacts)
----on both had frustration, last one, I explained, switch over my web from WM to ANDROID, tech said uh ok, didnt even power down my phone 2 mins later , working fine, so in all took like 10 mins on phone if that and all because of the automated person
Thanks, guys I will have to call and find out. To me that's icing on the cake and not a deal breaker.
EDIT: It's 10% not much but anything is better than none.

Penny deal on Amazon make you have texting plan

I use gvoice so clearly I do not want a texting plan. Anybody had luck getting them to remove it? I emailed Amazon customer service. If they wont remove it, I am guessing I can get Verizon to remove it after I receive my first bill.
Suggestions?

You are getting a $300 phone for a penny, they are making that up with the texting plan. There is no such thing as a free lunch. You might be able to remove it, but Amazon might very well come back and charge you full price. You'll have to carefully read the fine print in the Amazon terms. Which texting plan do they make you get?
Very true. If that ends up being the bottom line, I can definitely live with it. They made each line have 1000 text plan for $10 for each line.
Still, If I can save $20 a month, I'm going to try.
Also going to get another $10 a month off my fios bill now that I'm a Verizon Wireless customer too.

Huh. When I tried to buy a phone there I did not have to select a texting plan. I could just select data and move on. I didn't buy yet because I wanted a few more days to think about it
---------- Post added at 01:25 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:24 PM ----------
Folks are saying any change to the plan during the first 181 days violate the terms and you will have to pay amazon's ETF (which I think is $250).

Why would there be an early termination fee?
If you check out the other thread, I called Amazon Wireless today, and they said there's no ETF for changing your plan (upgrade or downgrade), as long as you keep the line open, with a data plan.

Are you sure about that last part, I have been told By a friend that works at verizon that data isnt tied to the plan. I looked through the terms and conditions on my order, also no mention of data. Only that the line stays active.
I had a friend call amazon today and tell them to point out the part in the terms that states you need to keep data. They couldnt find it.
I just got my rezound today, swapped service with my TB. And am going in tomorrow to take TB off and put a dumb phone on and cancel data.
I wonder how long it will take amazon to chage me if they are going to...?

true, data is not tied to the plan, but verizon has a requirement that any smartphone must have a dataplan. if they find out you do not, they will add it automatically for you.
Thats why im going to put a dumb phone on that plan and let it sit idle @ 9.99
I didn't notice any text messaging requirements, but I was just adding a line. It did have listed under family plans, both the mintues with unlimited texting and the minutes only.
I'm thinking the same thing about switching a dumb phone onto this line in a couple months after root is established.
Right now, I'm going to use my t-bolt has a hotspot on that line until I hit the 4gb limit every month (for my kindle fire). Once the rezound has root, I can just hotspot it.

can anyone verify for sure if you can change the phone on the line that amazon gave you? I'm not sure what business it is of theirs if we change the phone as long as we're on the line? Furthermore, what if we drop the phone and it breaks or lose it...are they going to charge us $250 for that as well?
Its been three months since this post. has anyone got charged by amazon for swaping lines and removing data??
If anyone actually read their amazon agreement it CLEARLY states, that you agree to keep the line of service active for no less than 180 days.
Use a little common sense people. Lets say your phone gets stolen and you don't have insurance. Amazon can't just randomly force/expect you to automatically have a backup phone that supports data/text just to satisfy their terms or they charge you an ETF. Legally speaking something like that would NEVER hold up in court unless they forced you to get deductible free insurance, which to my knowledge doesn't exist. Bottom line, read what you sign. This thread needs to be closed before it leads to needless paranoia.

I got my Rez for a penny on this deal and have not been charged anything and I moved the Rez over to a new line. I then put a dumb phone on that line and removed data and have not received any correspondence from Amazon whatsoever.
Put it this way...when I asked an Amazon rep about keeping my unlimited data on my line (the only option when purchasing the phone was 4GB/month) he said I need to call Verizon to make sure I kept it. He didn't have access to view my account.

You are correct . it states keep the line active no less than 180 days. However doesn't say anything about features, like data plan or the phone itself. It just says line of service. So what these guys are doing is keeping service on by putting a dumb phone on the line and pay$9.99 without data. However, wirefly doesn't mention about keeping data plans and not transferring phones among the family lines

[SOLVED]Activation Issues?

Is it just me or is anyone else having activation issues?
First, I tried activating it with the DEC numbers on the side of the box. Showed up the right Evo4GLTE but it told me I had to contact customer support.
Contacted chat support. They did the ESN swap for me easily but the phone never activated. After waiting and waiting it didn't activate so I decided to call Sprint and get transferred to Tech because I already went through the initial troubleshooting steps with Chat Online.
Tech support tells me to read the HEX or DEC number from the back of the phone. This ends up being DIFFERENT then whats on the label on the outside of the box. Stupid me. Or was it? She goes on to tell me that MY phone is under some other persons name "Karen". She asks me if I got this phone from someone basically implying that I stole it. I explain to her how we've all been waiting for a long time for this phone and this phone is BRAND NEW not even out in stores yet.
So whats the deal? I'm currently on hold with them but to be honest I think HTC or someone ****ed up in the labeling process and now everyone is trying to activate EVERYONE ELSE'S phone. WTF?!
More on this as the story unfolds.....
Update #1: Supervisor in the activation department says that someone screwed up and put the phone in the wrong box and since it's "keyed" into my account... simply switching the esn to my account wouldn't work. He goes on to say that they would have to get me a NEW DEVICE.
No way in hell am I going to let this happen.
Update #2: Had to get transferred to escalations. Janice from escalations told me she had fixed the issue and I should be able to activate it now through the website. Activated it on the website and now I have a functional EVO4GLTE!!
TLDR: Make sure you activate it with the the numbers found on the inside of the phone. Do not use the numbers from the label because they might be different!
when i talked to the guys at my best buy they told me that sprint was having problems activating the lte's today... But i havent picked mine up yet so i dont know..
I had to call them to activate mine as well. Everything worked fine after 10 minutes of the agent doing something while I waited. Sorry to hear about your issue regarding an already activated account though, that sounds quite annoying.

If it did not try doing an Update Profile.
I have not tried mine yet. But I just swapped phones around last night and sometimes you need to kick it.
Oh try pulling the battery, just kidding
I wonder if Karen works in Customs.

Yes. I probably should make that more clear on my original post. Activation screen popped up but it never activated because I entered in the RIGHT number that was on the label but the phone had a different set of serial numbers.

She goes on to tell me that MY phone is under some other persons name "Karen". She asks me if I got this phone from someone basically implying that I stole it.

Apple strikes again?
Tried the activation menu when it popped up on the phone. I got all the way to the end when it asks to pick which number on the account to activate it to and then failed.
Called in and they were having a little trouble saying something about the phone being applied to a different number on my account. She started to say something about checking that number and then said "oh its the same number".
I'm wondering if it has something to do with LTE or if the device is registered in their system a little different. She couldn't even tell what device it was untill I told her. Then she started asking questions about it. She said there were only a few demos floating around and most reps had never seen one.
Everything's working great so far.
Mine is telling me I need a plan change. Coming from a 0G so I shouldn't?

I ended up having to call in, no plan change needed though.
Yep, no plan change required.

I had the same thing and was able to activate via chat.
I tried to activate online, and it also told me I needed a new plan (coming from the OG EVO.) I had the Everything 450 plan. It gave me a few selections, including the same plan, so I chose it. Then it said I need to call Sprint.
I spent the next 45 minutes on the phone, while the CSR tried to figure out why it was telling her I needed a new plan, and it wouldn't let her transfer the service. Finally, after she said they had 3 people working on it, they figured out that Google Voice was the problem.
She said they'd have to "expire" my Google Voice account, and they weren't sure if I could keep the same GV number when I installed it on the new phone. I told them to go ahead, and it worked. I just installed GV, and it seems to be working fine, with my original number.
She said they'd look into why Google Voice was causing a problem.
Not just you
I also had my evo LTE switched with another persons, it just so happened that that other person was my sister who was sitting next to me getting her phone activated. When she was on the phone with the call center to activate it I noticed all of a sudden "my phone" was activated with her number.

I had the same thing happen to me. I guess when they were verifying the patent they didn't make sure they put the devices back in the correct box. Spent 4 hours with sprint, and 5 different people before they figured out what was going on.
They never told me that they couldn't swap the devices, it was pretty easy once they figured out what had happened. Now it is fully functional
if you were paying attention, and they made you enter a code to edit your MSN, the code they gave you was your MSL. i had a lady tell me three times she couldn't give me my MSL, then followed it with 'now, enter your MSL, it's blah blah blah.' when i asked if the number she just gave me was in fact my MSL, she said 'hold on, you need to speak with my supervisor', then hung up.
that number will make everything easier. i've never had an issue getting it on my other phones, but apparently something has changed . she was adamant about not giving it to me, until she had to.
I thought you had to wait x amount of days before they can just give it to you
