ICS update bricked the prime. it's now hung on the boot screen. where says "eee pad, asus, nvidia tegra"
called asus USA support, first asked to do a data wipe. did that and didn't work. now told to let it sit on the hanging boot screen to completely drain battery. then charge it for 2 hours. the tab will revert to honeycomb. once it boots, then go from there.
anyone know if they are BSing or this will actually revert?

I don't see any way that a power drain will melt the ICS away, that's pure bs. But you can still follow their instructions and be pleasantly surprised if it happens. Which then leads to the question, how about the rest of us, will our ICS update suddenly vanish and revert back to Honeycomb one of these days?

Surely, there seems to be a considerable amount of conflict between the ICS and the current crop of Primes out there. Missing serials, bricked tabs, dead gps/wifi, etc. What in the whole wide world is Asus doing for compatiblity between generations/ batches of these units with the latest build of ICS? I can only imagine one tired and overworked programmer staying up in the wee hours trying to finish up an ICS update so Asus can claim to be the first tab with the new OS. Quality, or the lack of it, is a serious issue here, the Prime fans are kept in the dark which makes the situation worse.
Its gonna work
Mine is totally fine but my Neibor did the update with a low battery and his stuck on the boot screen after the update. After the thing totally drained he plugged it in and charged it overnight and it reverted to honeycomb like nothing ever happened when he turned it on.

If it works for the bricked units it should also work for the nonbricks, or is there ai routine that can tell the difference between the two and prevents the fallback to the Honeycomb? This is a very interesting feature of the Prime, reflashing through a power drain process.

Thanks, I'm impressed! That means the boot process performs a check on the update to ensure completeness and accuracy and dumps the garbage if it fails. I believe it now.

It also means the Honeycomb is a permanent resident while ICS updates are tenants that come and go as upgrades become available. So there should be no way to brick a Prime if the Honeycomb is hard coded in rom.

well, if that's true, we learned something new. what prevents working units reset back to honeycomb when battery power runs out? some logical errors are in the theory.
very nice asus could write such feature into the firmware (but not able to write a stable update in the first place, that is if battery < x percent, prompt power, else continue update...)
seems odd.
This isn't going to work, tried it with my first prime. although I hope I'm wrong for the op's sake

Was it the ICS update (so the GPS fix) or the update to ICS...
Big difference there, if the latter then yeah... can imagine that if the update didn't complete you can do the trick described.

Hey leo221, I think you should give it a try because some people have done it and reverted back to the Honeycomb. You have nothing to lose and if you unbrick your Prime then that would be great! Let us know the results so others will be informed. Thanks.
No but I read on the forums that people were able to recover their devices by lettering the battery drain when there were problems with one of the hc updates. I figured it might work with my issues after the ics update. I let it die, then charged it when I got home from work, still bootlooped.

More details please, why is there a difference? Does Honeycomb disappear altogether when ICS with gps fix is installed?
I think the difference between this and the non-bricked devices is that the OTA update didn't work, so when the battery totally drains it reverts back to the last working setup. May be wrong though. I'm sure it wouldn't work if you were using ICS and it bricked for some reason down the line after a successful OTA update.

Ok, the OP said,
"was the ICS update. when I do the vol down+power hold, it says I'm on US_epad-9.4.2.11-20120117."
so I assume that he will be able to revert back to Honeycomb, hopefully.
---------- Post added at 03:46 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:35 PM ----------
Just my own thoughts, it appears the process of updating to ICS opens up a register that allows the flashing of the ICS code into an eeprom device and when competed the register is closed but when the update does not take and the process hangs, the register is left open and the power drain wipes the eeprom. So the tab reverts back to Honeycomb, very similar to an image recovery process in the pc world.

I was performing a nandroid backup when then the progress line stopped. I let it sit for over 4 hours and the line did not move. The phone was locked up. I took the battery out to reset the phone and now it will not turn on. I tired several different key comobs, including volume up+down and power, with no efffect. When I plug it in it does nothing. I was using ISCrewD with the Siyah kernal now for a couples months with no issues. That was actually the only custom rom I ever flashed to the phone, loved the rom. From reading the forums, it seems I am hard bricked. How did that happen? Any suggestions?
Do you remember what version of Siyah you were using? I read recently that 3.1RC6 had a major bug in it that was hard bricking people's phones.
Version 2.6.13.
OP, you must have done something weird (or power loss) during the backup as there is no way nandroid backup in CwM causing hardbricking.
jojo, that version of Siyah was for ICS, the OP ran GB.

no, it's for GB, just checked G's site. However, there are 4 download entries, one of which is the Korean based (possible bricker). What's more, G could've rebased the ATT version from the Korean... I'd be amazed if, after all the bricking going on, he'd still have a download for it. Weird.

For real? Siyah 3.1.rc6 is for GB?
You were doing a nandroid backup, not a restore, and on gingerbread, so it's hard to say what caused the problem. I don't believe I've seen any report exactly like yours.
You tried several button combinations, including recovery mode, which did not work, but did you try to get into download mode? First try to enter download mode with the battery in -- hold vol+ and vol- (but not pwr) and then plug in the usb cable. If no success with that, pull the battery and do the exact same sequence to enter download mode. The usb cable will provide the power. Sometimes there is a problem with the battery. If you can get download mode, you're not bricked.

It is a GB rom/kernal...
I tried, as said above, to hold down vol up and down, then insert the usb cable, no go with or without the battery in. My wife has the same phone, so I tried her battery and no go, then put my battery in hers and all was fine. So battery seems ok. I have played around a good bit with it this evening, and read a good bit in the forums...all points to hard bricked. I have no idea how it happened, I have seen no others (at least from my seraches) have this problem with nandroid backup. For that matter I have used it before with this rom/kernal and no issue. Warranty is still good on it, guess I will try and get it exchanged, hopefully they don't get it to boot up with a custom rom on it. No way for me to restore it back to stock of course.

Just to be clear, when we say USB dongle, we're not taking about a USB jig...we're talking about the USB-to-MicroUSB data cable that came with the phone.
I have already tried the micro usb cable that came with the phone and tried to get Odin to see the phone, no go. I ordered a Jig to see if it would force the phone into download mode...
Got my USB Jig today. Took the battery out (even tried wifes 'good' battery). Put the battery in, then the Jig...nothing. I would assume the phone has some form of hardware failure...guess time to get ahold of AT&T and get a warranty exchange.
AT&T is sending a 'refurb' phone today...should be here soon...hopefully they don't get my phone to work and see the custom kernal/rom...No matter what I try, it just won't come on.
first i am new and dont know a lot about software/android
i used this guide to try to flash the liquid jelly bean
androidauthority.com/galaxy-note-i717-android-4-1-1-liquid-jelly-bean-custom-rom-114126/
since the ROM download link wasnt working i downloaded it from here
android.gs/install-liquidsmooth-custom-rom-on-att-samsung-galaxy-note-i717-android-4-1-2-jelly-bean/
in the first link i followed the steps BUT forgot to do a clean/wipe the factory data
now after the flashing completed i hit reboot now and waited 6min than i tried to hold down the power button and nothing. took out battery and try to restart but nothing
how do i go back to either the reflashing or to my old ICS flashed version (using tmobile sim with forced 4g)?
My battery was full and every time i try to plug it to my pc it keeps telling me to format the sd/internal storage.
Pull battery and put back
Hold power and both volume buttons
At Samsung screen, release ONLY power
Keep holding volume, recovery will come up
Wipe data/factory reset.
Wipe cache partition
While you're at it, go to Mounts and storage - Format system
Reinstall ROM

The phone is likely bricked ...
The link you used is likely the same one another user tried yesterday.
It's not an I717 rom....it's actually a GS3 rom, and when flashed, instantly bricks the device.
You likely need a JTAG repair on the device, as it is hard bricked with no download mode.
Very sorry, it's a bad deal...but users "must" verify rom sources before flashing...
The link you used has bricked your device....g
Someone needs to report to the writer that they're referring people to an incorrect ROM. Granted its not their fault but damn. People do whatever the internet tells them to and we already have enough "bricked" threads.

so just one thing
should i try the usb download mode dongle thing first or try the JTAG service and are which ones on AMAZON are compatible with att note
Concerning this issue, there is room for improvement by devs and users both.
I have to say many of the liquid items are not organized well. After so many issues due to this you would think at some point they would be cleaned up. Also while I agree folks should confirm they have the correct rom, files, etc before flashing, it takes verry little to add safeguards to a rom making it device specific so it will not flash to an unintended device.
Just my two pennies.

And what you did here and what you are recommending is fraud. You voided the warranty when you rooted it and flashed a custom rom to it. I wouldn't say you got lucky I would say you cheated the system
Alright, so I got this phone for Christmas, and being the impatient techie I am, decided to do the N4 conversion and get Jellybean. But, this is not my problem. When I plugged the phone in for it's first charging, the screen froze, and I had to hold down the power button, and restart the phone. I thought that maybe this could be a glitch in the stock firmware, so I figured that I could solve that problem, whilst upgrading to Jellybean. I was wrong.. so wrong. The phone still had these problems, every time it was plugged into anything other than my Asus Tablet charger, or my laptop, it would freeze up and require a reboot. Finally, I got fed up with this, and called AT&T to try and use the warranty to get a new phone, but the tech support guy asked what my "phone identity" was and I knew he'd find out I had rooted. I tried to go back to stock, but my laptop always has difficulty with drivers and such, and couldn't get the process to work.
My problem began last night, when I was charging the phone as usual. I reached over to grab it, and the phone cut off completely, and now, won't cut back on. I've tried going into recovery mode, download mode, and even praying to pagan gods.. just kidding. The only sign I have that the phone is working at all, is when it is plugged into a power source, the charging light comes on. I'm going to tell AT&T that the phone is ruined, and cause a fuss about them sending me a phone with defective hardware, so they should send me a warranty replacement. (My mom has been a customer for about 14 years now, so they do whatever she asks usually.)
My question is, is there any possible way to get the phone back on, so I can try and revert back to stock, so I can avoid the AT&T techies from discovering that I rooted? If that happens, I'd have to be paying them like $223, which I reallllly don't have at the moment.
You guys have always come through when I've needed help, so whatever advice you can give is greatly appreciated!
Thanks a million!

LGNPST back to stock, It should lock you out with an encryption failed error. That's a stock option. Everything else will be stock. Make sure your sd card is clear of root related things. Take it to the store and be dumb.
Also, I had a problem getting back to stock the first time too. But in your situation you may want to do the battery pull. Instructions are on this forum somewhere. I had that problem too, took it to best buy and they just looked at it and handed me another

You should have just gone into "Download" mode and reflashed your phone to complete stock. This would have eliminated any sort of software issues you were having. If it continued after reflash then you should have sent it back. =( You could have saved some money.
How would they know if you are rooted if you can't turn it on?
First thing they've normally don't themselves is flash it back to stock.
LG Optimus G E971
Yeah root they probably won't notice. Especially if it won't turn on, it is undetectable. Root means giving superuser permissions or beyond the user's regular permissions while booted (rw permissions). If it can't boot nothing can detect it.

Care to share to do this? I'm currently trying but can't seem to get the e970 kdz file, as the downloader app for it keeps giving me unhandled exception errors. Thanks for any and all help.

Hey man, I'm in the exact same position as the guy you pm'd and would also appreciate instructions on how to get my optimus back to stock rom. Been searching everywhere for that kdz file for my E970 just to finally read that it doesn't exist (Been using the "Original LG Firmware" app thing). Anyway, I'm in his exact same position and would really really really appreciate it if you pm me what you did for him so i dont have to go back to at&t. Thanks.

Hello, I flashed the XE-SeroROM and kernel from the dev thread and would like to revert to stock. I see the stock firmware available but does anyone know where I can locate the stock kernel as well? Any help is greatly appreciated.
EDIT: In addition, does anyone know how I might restore functionality to vudu? A good addition to the first post in that dev thread would be a warning that it kills vudu and even reverting to stock doesn't fix it.
I took the Boot.img provided and inserted it into the kerneltest.zip and it seems to have worked. The OTA update is almost working now. Seems to fail at "set_perm" status 7. ??
RE:
Still no joy. I managed to get back to stock recovery, stock kernel, stock OS (is this really stock?), and even mostly apply the update thus breaking wifi so...restore everything stock and no vudu. It seems once you root flash recovery then vudu is a lost cause for good? Is it requiring a secure key in the original rom that gets lost when flashing maybe? I guess since I'm in the window, I'm going to just return it and grab another.

Yeah I ran into the same problem trying to install the update...got an error and my wifi quit working. So I reinstalled the stock ROM. Once we have ten posts we can ask in the forum. Other than that I love this tablet. I am sure someone will make a ROM with the update included. Remember the sero 7 is new and I am confident the best is yet to come for it. You might want to hang onto it.

I just exchanged it for another one. I think there is a security feature in it the same as with some other embedded devices that won't allow it to become "stock" once again after you flash a custom rom. It should have been able to install the update fully and use vudu if it had truly been returned to original condition. I hope they consider posting a warning about that in the first post. I know Vudu doesn't matter to a lot of people but it is a pretty important feature to me and I like to be able to keep up with OTA updates if they have relevance to device specific drivers or whatever. The custom rom was cool though...I can't believe how much has been accomplished with it in a short time.
Sent from my M470BSA using xda app-developers app I too have not been able to update. I went back to stock but still the update failed.I wish someone would incorporate the update into a new ROM.I didn't know that I could not return to true stock or I wouldn't have installed the ROM. I've lost some of the stock apps too like the remote. But I still think the devs have done and amazing job for this early in this tablet release.

You are right about the warning. All I did was root mine and installed cwm..I did not install the custom ROM. I am sure they will find a work around for the update. I hope so cause i am just outside the 15 days.I don't use vudu but I understand. I know I could buy a new one and return this one but this one is perfect so i am gonna keep it. So we wait and see what happens next with Dev...lol

Yup..I know how you feel. I am going to hang in there and keep mine. The fact that so much has been done since release is a good indicator of much more to come. It will be interesting to see what the next rom will be.

I suppose karma bit me on the ass. I exchanged mine in perfect physical condition to get one with a stuck pixel and a spot near the bottom that looks like some kind of screen fault. Should have left well enough alone...I would rather do without vudu than have this. The update seems substantial though.

1. why vudu? you have an entire android market.
2. xboxexpert provides an executable to go back to bone stock. just run from within windows.
3. you should learn to do it thru fastboot
4. i have a device tree and booting cm 10.1 but the mods wont let me post in dev forums or include links for another 7 post, damn nazis

If you were so smart, u should of figured, how ridiculously easy it is to make ten MEANINGFUL posts. Stop the whining, deal with it, and make those ten, THE RIGHT WAY!
RE:
Vudu because it supports ultraviolet and contains much of my already owned content which I do not wish to purchase again. In general I prefer the service to google play video because it is on my Bluray players as well allowing me to easily view the same shared content on multiple locations. The "revert to stock" option does not fix the vudu app or the OTA updates either. Don't know about fastboot yet so no comment there.

Sorry that happened to you. Maybe take it back and get another one? I would think the update does more than just patch a security hole. I mean it 50megs. It's a shame Hisense doesn't post revisions.

It puts the device back to what appears to be bone stock. But the update still does not install for me and yes I have tried everything. Have you tried installing the update after just doing a root and CWM and reverting back to the "stock rom"?
xboxexpert has a new version of his root and custom UI for the Sero 7 pro posted for the new build that came out.

I have not had problems with Vudu, even after rooting my Sero 7 Pro, playing with XERom, and restoring it back to stock (but rooted). There are two differences that may be involved.
I only played with Vudu after restoring it to stock. I never ran it before.
I did a backup of my stock ROM and installed software immediate after installing CWM, and I used that to restore everything. (It's nice having 32GB of SD Card to backup to.)

Weird, I still have my Vudu and remote apps after rooting & cwm on my sero7 pro. But then again, I just did the root 3 weeks ago so maybe the root file from the xbox Dev post has been modified/amended/fixed to fix that issue since the version you used back when you did yours. Either way.. I'm sorry that has happened to you, I also like my Vudu My problem now is waiting for them to release something to help us trick our devices into switching our internal storage path with our external/SD paths so we can actually USE our SD cards like intended>>for storing apps!.. spent all that damn money on a 32gb card cause I knew I was gonna be an app hog, only to turn out that all I can use it for is storing photos, video, docs and music..but no apps!?!! Ridic.. Grrr!

I use an app called "FolderMount" for linking my apps to the SD. So far, haven't had any issues with it - I've been able to move almost all of my resource hogging games to the SD without a hitch...

Stock ROM my ass.
Lots of stuff ends up not working or missing.
He could just like at least let people know he fuxored up the so called "stock" ROM he posted.
Why vudu? ...because I had an account already.
anyway it is hilarious how this is such a respected site and so many things are joke on here and don't work correctly.
Anyway we all knew the risks going in so w/e.
Ditto..so I'm not the only one?!

Yeah, I'm having the SAAAME exact issues... about the first 3 weeks after rooting with that rom everything was allll good and great..... NOW, I have to shut down and reboot about 5-8 times A DAY!.. 'Launcher' stops working, and EVERY-DAMN-TIME my tablet goes to sleep/screen off for more than about 30-40 mins..it just crashes and you have to force it to shut down and reboot.. Rooting was soooo not worth it, I never even really ended up using any "root required" features or apps anyways, besides folder mount (stopped functioning), and GameKiller. And now I'm fizznucked cause even know my sero7p is only 2 MONTHS old/new and I bought the 2 year replacement plan..rooting voided that So yeah, I'm RIGHT there with u, stuck with what used to be a kick ass functioning tablet, that is now just a nuisance and is gonna end up being yet another dusty R.I.P. electronic stuck in a drawer somewhere..when will I learn?! lol. Best of luck..

What I did was flash the first stock ROM in the list and then tell cwm no when it asks if I want to stop the ROM from flashing the stock recovery and then no again when it asks about root and it's all back to normal now
Have to RMA my hdx 7".. the light bleed is just insane, like 1/2" of blue around the sides of the screen.
Anyway... it has safestrap installed with 2 slots setup.. Could someone give me a quick rundown on the safe way to restore this to 100% stock? I did a quick search but fail at search. thank you

I was dealing with a similar situation. Here are the steps to restore it to 100% stock.
I am not sure if you would need to delete manually the ROM slot you created first, but I assume not. I did, just to be safe. It might be my OCD though.

Oh, I forgot to ask. Any chance that you could post a picture of your screen that shows the bleeding? I would like to compare it to mine. I have it too, but I am not sure if it's worth the trouble going through the replacement as many people report that their second or third replacement has it too. I wanna see how bad it yours.

that doesn't sound right at all. i can leave my 7" laying around for days without it dying, unless i've been using the hell out of it. i had one problem with bluetooth keeping it awake, and i turned bluetooth off and rebooted and it hasn't happened again

Well.. the replacement i got, all i have done is install moon reader and dropbox and a few other apps (i actually like the amazon OS once i can sideload things and get dropbox on it) And standby is 3 days.. i came in to work today it was at 4%.. so its better than my last one. but still same monster light bleed and stuff.. no big thing i don't use this much. My old nexus 10 is still the best i have used. and front speakers. mmmmm
weird..on standby mine lasts a lot longer than that
