PC output display to multiple android tablets? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

All I can find is video output to 1 secondary monitor. I need to know if I can (using iDisplay or whatever) output from a pc to 8-12 android tablets in extended desktop. So the tablets would make 1 big monitor. Operating system on pc side can be linux or windows 7/xp. Anyone know or try this? The guy at work that wants this, saw the verizon commercial......yay...
http://youtu.be/KNd9-PJQPGc

Doesn't seem very comfortable to use O_O
If you can buy 10 devices for displaying windows, than you can buy a monitor, too

haha. Well its for a show/event. And they want to give them away after the presentation. So monitors/tv's will not do, as most people have flights to catch afterward.

You think that will work? Looks like that is 1 tablet to show a pc desktop. I will have up to 12 tablets physically touching eachother to make it look like 1 pc desktop. If I need to have 12 usb cord/plugs thats fine, but I still am shaking my head at this director for asking me to do this.

iDisplay got back to me, with bad news :/
Hello,
Thank you for contacting us.
Unfortunately simultaneous work with multiple devices is not currently supported in iDisplay for
Windows, sorry.
It is currently supported in iDisplay for Mac OS only.
Please feel free to contact us if you need any further assistance.

Another email to/from the company. It sounds like OSX can run up to 8 devices simultaneously as additional monitors. So that may be what we do.

Car Dock Plus Development

Ok I have a question... Forgive me if I'm posting in the wrong area. Here is the pitch: I have been looking forward to this phone for a long time (as most of you) I have been interested for a few years in developing an on the go platform for mobile entertainment. What I mean is just something I can use in my car to listen to music or watch movies. I know there are many things that exist that allow me to do this but I'm looking to develop a more all in one truly mobile solution and the Note might be the best option.
Without boring everyone with too much details- I'm hoping the Note comes with NFC for starters but does anyone know- will the usb host adapter allow the Note to charge and possibly use an external hard drive at the same time?
I'm in the R&D stages now for a car dock with software that will allow Note to just slide in and go similar to the newer mobile infotainment systems that are starting to show up in cars now but this will be truly mobile.

Omgosh what a great idea! Hooking up an externel hard drive may work, because you can plug flash drives into tablets and they work just fine. Hope your plan works, because if iit does ill be installing it on my stang
You posted this in an unrelated thread, so I moved it to its own thread. Your plan sounds great, I hope you can make it happen, I'd like a nice car dock for my future Note
Thanks for your interest guys! I will post some more info as the design begins testing.
As of now I'm using my Captivate for a front end... it kinda works but there's a lot of manual interaction which I'm hoping with the Note I can move away from. If this works out I can move to actually producing a full mobile infotainment solution.
I'm curious though... This project started out with just a personal want to make my long drives a little more comfortable. It has now turned in to something that I actually depend on and almost need. Do you guys think there is an actual need for something like this? Maybe this could be a start for a whole new "something" platform.

Personal need and an idea of how to fulfill it is how many great products come around. I really wish I had a decent dock for my Captivate (that's what I've got, too), but none exist - and I have looked. Go for it. See where it takes you. Might make you some nice coin, and make others happy in the process!

You heard it here first... Should have some renderings soon-ish. I'm a software designer that works mostly in MS technologies so this is a new avenue but with all the support on XDA it shouldn't be too hard.
I would be very interested in this as well.
Good luck on the R&D

Based on how the Galaxy Tab works the answer is no, you can't use the USB drive and charge at the same time. You will need to build a custom cable.

I hope to have a Note to test with soon... (pre-ordered) The cable isn't too much of a problem just one more thing to put on the list. I'm toying around with designs that will able to have upgrades/plugins via a usb hub.

Thanks! I'm hoping that I won't have to mess with the kernel too much... Most of what I need is already open in the OS (I hope) and I will most likely have the hardware completed before the software pieces. As long as my wife doesn't kill me first for spending too much time in the shop.
i think thats a great idea. check out how i am doing it now, using a 8.9 tab lte:

Hopefully your contribution could be applied here? may I suggest you to take a look at the mp3car.com forums? there's an android section there, very interesting.
http://www.mp3car.com/android-tablet/
What's most needed i feel are the development of physical buttons to control the tablet/phone while driving. I envision using something like a bt version of devices like carpc joycon ex (basically a small device that turns your steering wheel buttons into a usb keyboard), or using modified bt headset buttons.

Nice setup! That is exactly what I'm looking for. The physical buttons are something that also crossed my mind. I will check out the joycon. I think with the USB host it will be a lot easier now. I do frequent mp3car.com they have helped with a couple carpc's I have built for friends and my own XBMC in my WRX I still use to play games while sitting in my car. This is the first time I'm traveling down the android path and I think it's going to be a better experience all around.
Thanks.
Now I think the note would be way more appropriate for my other car - the 8.9 is more fitting to a truck really.
Keep us posted!

I'm gonna try using a Seagate goflex satellite hard drive as a media center for my note in my car. It's 500gb and produces a Wi-Fi signal that the phone hooks onto, you then use the Seagate app to access all the hard drives music and movies. I plan to hardwire the hard drive into my cars power along with a micro charger to plug into the Samsung note car dock. I'll let everyone know how the hard drive works out. It could be an option for your project too, although the hard drive is rather pricy.

Yeah, I have considered that, but I've seen less than stellar reviews on Amazon and I balked. Price is not a concern, as long as it works. The reviews stated that the interface was very poor and buggy. No playlists, no thumbnails, no folder support, IIRC.
Seagate, like Samsung, is not known for writing sleak software. So the fact that I must depend on their updates (will it work with ICS? Will it work in Landscape mode? etc.) is a concern. They should release their APIs at least, or source code.
I'd rather something like a NAS DLNA server. With DLNA, I can choose a bunch of compatible apps, I believe.
Also, about the Seagate's wifi connection, is is ad-hoc? Would it prevent the tablet from accessing the Internet? I suspect not, if you're using the note, but if you're using a tablet tethered to the phone...then this wouldn't work.
I have seen a couple lack luster reviews on the satellite but my friend is offering it to me for $75 because he never uses it anymore so I figured I would give it a shot. If it doesn't do what I need it to in the car I will either just use it for my tablet in home or sell it as Im sure I could recoup at least $75 from a $200 hard drive
Great, please report back your findings.

Mobile app revenue

Hi there,
I'm planning to make a windows app. What's the probability of making money on windows app or in other words is there any chance of making money on these app. If so, let me know the process. Making a rental car windows app.
Please respond with any information u have. Till now I didn't get reply for my questions in this forum.
Thx,
Cindy!!
Well, if you are planning on making a paid app, getting profit from it will be a lot harder now. The reasons are:
You can't put it in the Windows Mobile Marketplace since it's closed
Windows Mobile has barely any marketshare now... Maybe Windows Phone 7, iOS, or Android...
Not a lot of people exactly love to go to other websites and tell them their credit card number...
And if you were planning to develop the app in a .Net language, try Windows Phone 7. The marketplace is the fastest growing ever, and you don't need to teach yourself a whole new language...
Anyways, good luck!
Are you referring to Windows 8 apps?
I'm sure there is some sort of a market there right now and the market is only going to grow.
If you have something you can quickly port - I'd recommend getting it in and seeing what the return is.
I believe Microsoft are running a points program now to entice developers to get apps in their store. So for every app you earn a certain amount of points that you can use to buy things like Halo or Windows 8 Pro etc...
(I realize this is an old post, but perhaps this information can help future forum members looking for the same thing.)

Hi Cindy!
Yes, it is possible to make money with a Windows app, whether is it for Windows 8 or Windows Phone 8. You can search for "Windows apps case studies" to find others who have made money off the platform [1][2].
The great thing about Windows is that there is less competition than Android and iOS. So, you have the opportunity to own a much larger market share with your app.

[$$$ Bounty] Chromecast Support for Nexus Q

Born in another thread (Make an app for the nexus q that adds chromecast support: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2379961) i am creating this thread to raise attention that some members have agreed to set up a bounty for developer(s) who can bring the chromecast functionality to the Nexus Q (most likely via an Android app / apk).
For now I'm using this thread to write down the members and the amount they're willing to donate to this cause. We'll have to figure out how to make sure the bounty goes to the correct person in the end (maybe some sort of verified paypal?).
I'll maintain this list here and collect information as well. For developers interested in working on a solution together we could also use this thread.
jbriano, $100
Kovs, $50
Surge1, $50
darb, $50
ianandamy, $50
brianwilcox, $35
jmm701, $25
ocdtrekkie, $25
unknownkwita, $25
eddib, $25
Volatyle, ???
Total Bounty Amount as of now: $435.
Feature Requests:
proper HAL audio drivers working too
Would also like the lights to work how they did if that is possible
It seems that HAL is very important to most of the people here.
I will edit this post whenever new information becomes available.
People wishing to contribute just post in this thread with the amount of money they want to donate.
And I think if people posted features they'd like to see I will add them to this OP post as well.

this is great!
I'll flash this around where I can.
I will do 50 to start with

In all honesty, without having my hands on either, this doesn't seem like it would take that much effort.
I might have to crack open the firmware dump from each and check it out.
I got $35 on it.
I'm in for $100
I paid for two of these devices, and loved them when they worked. I'll contribute $100 toward the cause.
I'm in for 50.0
Sure
I can do $25.

Great idea! It seems, there is hope for the Q in one way or the other. Androidpolice reported on some developers implementing Chromecast already. Here's the link:
http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/0...es-stream-any-local-or-cloud-file-to-your-tv/
I think it is great to see what they can already do. I guess / hope in a couple of weeks we'll have a Chromecast reciever app...
If you'd like to update... I'll toss in $25 as my amount. I don't want to buy a whole 'nother Chromecast worth.
I'll put in $25.
On a side note, is it possible to googlecast to multiple chromecast devices with the content in sync like audio could be on the nexus Q? Because that would be a great feature.

It looks like he's just streaming via bluetooth to the Q...
some more interesting news:
Leapcast, a chromecast emulation app for any device: https://github.com/dz0ny/leapcast
found on reddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/Chromecast/...st_a_chromecast_emulation_app_for_any_device/
i'm not with my nexus q, maybe someone could look into it?
and apparently the chromecast uses DIAL: http://www.dial-multiscreen.org/
Let's take a look into the Python code. I'm not very familiar with the language as I stopped using Python when I dropped Freevo years ago. But script is script and the heavy lifting is done by Chrome itself. The script just provides the local network discovery mechanisms so supported apps show the cast icon similar to the Nexus Q's or Bluetooth audio.
After selecting the leapcast device from your Android the script starts the Chrome browser with a few arguments (incognito, no-first-run, kiosk, user-agent=, user-data-dir) and a URL from https://clients3.google.com/cast/chromecast/device/config. So obviously there's some Cookie transfer between the script and the Chrome instance running incognito with the /tmp/ based user-data-dir. Somebody with a little knowledge about Python and/or Chrome will soon figure out what's necessary.
Since I'm the proud/ridiculous/sad owner of 5 Nexus Q I have real big interest having Music + All Access running in all my rooms again. Years ago I ran a Debian installation on a rooted stock-ROM Nexus One from the SD card via chroot environment. So my hopes are up high again because
the script might run in a linux/chroot environment on the Q
Chrome on Android may one day be able to run Chromecast display pages (or already is)
I'm upping the bounty by $200 USD if multi-room audio for Google Music is supported on my Q's. Also, I'll start coding by myself now

You could at least post this in Android general or something. That may actually help people who want to develop but are on a budget. But definitely not here.

Does it exist something like XDA for Apple devices?

I am thinking about buying an iPad, but I am afraid it could be uncontrollable, connecting to internet, sending personal data, etc.
Is there a hacking forum like XDA to tame Apple devices?

What is it about Apple devices being uncontrollable and the need to hack? I've never used one before nor have I heard anything about hacking the device to access/use certain features.. Could you let me know what this is all about since I've been considering changing from Google to Apple?
Every device can have some issue that needs adressing somehow, hardware, software.- this is why a Forum is a good place to see what problems each device may have.
Keep Android because the price to feeature as well as the ability to load free apps, is worht it dealing with more settings.
On apple the privacy settings are less and are all under Settings. Some are on iCloud/Apple account. All in all much less knobs than Samsung for example.
The iCloud sync is a data leak risk you don't know who can touch that and when and how and why.
However if the device is a positive in your life, then keep it , use both platforms.
