What improvements can I see if I freeze an app?
My Galaxy Ace runs on Android 2.3.6, upgraded firmware thru Kies.
Phone is rooted. Installed AntTek App Manager. Froze 'Samsung Apps'.
No visible differences as far as I can tell, except that it cannot be used. Internal memory remains the same, as expected, since it's only freeze, not uninstall.
So what's the fuzz all about? Should my phone be a bit faster now?
Can I just delete Samsung Apps using AntTek? Would it cause phone to be unstable?
freezing apps will only make them not to autostart everytime...
when i bought ace it was like hell of apps start without even triggering them and i don't need them..
so freezing would only stop them.. if you want free space in internal then remove them..but only if you know what are you removing
as even if you tell root to format phone it will do it without thinking for 1sec
Freezing apps is only for those who think that their phones are slowing down due to a certain application. You must be good enough to guess which application or you might screw your phone up. Best to leave your phone alone and let the experts do freezing of apps in their phones. Please DO NOT TRY THIS IF YOU ARE NOT SURE!!!!!! Freezing certain apps can cause the system to fail leading to permanent motherboard damage. The decision if up to you, end of the day.
Delete it is better...like what i do, no need to have those wakelock app...

As the norm is, I have been busy tinkering with the stock material for couple o days, and I will continue to do so for some more time!

Query: There are too many apps running (background) all the time!! I kill them, they resurrect!, How to do away with that?
Solution applied: Used Advanced task killer (but, apps resurrect!)
Another Solution tried: In Settings>Account & Sync settings> Unchecked Background data and Auto sync options. (Now, they dont connect to the net, but, they still restart!!)
Another Solution: Force close (from Manage apps) .. (Still same issue!)
Now, How can I tell the apps to come up only when I call them!?
(And some other apps I want to schedule them to come up every hour or so.. like my Gmail/FB)

Welcome to the cool kids club! I'm in a somewhat similar situation, I got my streak just before the massive snowstorm hit. Some of those apps need to be running... if you close some of them you may not get updates/notifications, or you can shut down your phone/data connection, or lose the use of multitouch.

from what i understand, froyo is really good with resource management and there is no need to constantly kill processes or apps, its best to just leave them unless your streak is slow like a snail

well in terms of the laws of nature (in most cases) stuff doesnt happen spontaneously so i think its safe to assume that your app that "started by themselves" were probably opened somehow either by you directly or indirectly by something else. if, however, you have a large number of apps that have started that you dont recall opening, maybe something is wrong with your software and you shouldnt try to cover the problem with a task killer.
So, what next!?

I use the Adv Task Killer free.
(It says 7 apps killed and 180 MB free)
I open Adv task killer after 5 seconds.
and these apps are running!
Email
astro
Voice Search
Assistant Free
and I am sure, If I wait for some more time, the other apps will join in too!
(Now it says, 3 Apps killed, 171 MB free!!)

have you tried using the stock app manager and killing the apps there? i just checked my phone and i have the same apps under the running tab using the stock manager, i think email and messaging are always running since you have push features on them, in terms of the others im not sure. whats so bad about email and messaging running anyways? im sure you use them often enough to not want to have to open and close them right?
Hey, you posted the same question over at Pocketables forum.
As stated earlier, 2.2 is really good at managing back ground tasks.
I can tell you if you use a task killer and you have a problem with an APP, which currently you do not, the programmer for the app probably will not help you till you remove the APP killer program.
What you might try to do is run though your menus and see what you have selected to run, such as locations and sync services and disable what you can. Also if you do not want some thing running, you may want to just uninstall it. I do understand that you want some programs but you only want them to run when you ask, not sure how to tell you to handle that.
But, are you seeing any difference when you have the background tasks disabled. Try to find the APK for the programs and rename them just to see if you have any issues.
like widgets? such as "apmobiles", seems to be a newspaper sort of thing i will never read. i also can't uninstall social/music/gaming/book hubs? i'm in the setting/applications/manage applications bit.
i want to basically delete a LOT of apps then only install what I need? i'm new to smartphones, moved from a nokia keypad phone. so the galaxy s2 was a massive jump for me.
Have a search for titanium backup and root. You'll need to root your phone 1st before you can 'freeze' but not remove apps.
The phone is brand new and it will take a while before custom roms that let you remove apps are available.
If I were you I'd wait before rooting as it is still a bit complicated and simpler methods will come along soon, I'm sure. I'd use the time to read the guides and get familiar with the phone.
Bear in mind that rooting/custom roms will lose you your warranty. Also, I'm not too worried about app removal as the phone has plenty of memory for my needs. Just remove the apps you don't want from the home screen and put on the ones that you do.
Edit: just wanted to clarify that I was referring to removing pre - installed apps.

Thanks for that, it's that I also noticed that there are services running in the background from applications that I'm not using, like I have the apmobile service running and also a social hub service running even neither is open. And I at least want to remove app shortcuts from the menu.
You'll need to root and freeze to remove the shortcut from the app drawer. I really wouldn't do that until you've read up and are confident though.
There are other threads about the social hub, have a search. I think you'll need to reset the phone and then not add any accounts if you want to stop it from being active.

To add-up about removing the widgets (probably you've found it already though), you only need to hold down the widget and slide it down to an area says remove
this phone comes with a built in task manager and a widget that shows you active tasks, i use the widget on my phone's desktop to close apps as needed ( i know the phone can handle it but its just my own thing lol ) and from there, there's a tab that lets you uninstall apps as well.
ofcourse you wont be able to uninstall those that came with the phone just yet.
I rooted mine which was dead easy and was my first time so you'll be fine. Download AntTek app manager from the market its free and lets you freeze, delete and backup any apps and widgets you want. You will no longer have any of those crap apps working in the background draining your battery. Hope this helps.
Edit: Oh yeah the built in task manager doesn't show system apps working in the background or at least not all so well worth freezing or removing them.

I installed Amazon App Store app to get one of the free app of the days. But now, it keeps running in the background. Probably collecting info.
I added the app to the Auto-End list (where it SHOULD kill the app after 2 minutes of screen off). The Amazon app seems to start when phone boots up. It also someone resurrects itself. I've made sure to not use it, and at some point during the day I checked running tasks and there it is.
If I kill it manually, it eventually shows up again some time during the day.
There are other apps that turn on by themselves on startup, but don't resurrect themselves. On windows, it's easy to manage auto-startup services. It's in the administrative tool. Is there the equivalent of this on Android?
Amazon is annoying like that; it does the same thing with me. Its really not hurting your battery or phone but just looking at it can be annoying so i understand. If it really bothers you that much get "titanium backup" from the market and freeze it when you aren't using it. Also your phone is smart enough to close apps/end processes on its own, moto just put the task killer there as it really serves no purpose. Also auto killing apps isnt smart; your phone probably uses more battery when it has to open up a new process everytime you open an app since you autokill and dont let it manage process/apps on its own. Android likes to let apps that aren't being used rest in memory in the background...id suggest you stop auto killing apps and do some research for yourself on how the android linux kernel works.

I did read into Android developer's way of thinking about how apps on a smart phone should behave, and their philosophy regarding memory management.
However, this philosophy opens up the possibility for abuse by app developers (Amazon). Programs that I use maybe once a month really don't need to be running (especially on startup), regardless of how little memory they use up, or how awesome Android's memory management scheme is.
I don't intend on micromanaging every process. Just those that are obvious wastes.

I agree with you. Try out bloatware freezer or other apps in the market that blk apps from starting up when the phone turns on. Android definitely needs to get small issues like this fixed in future builds for sure.
Ok i have advanced task killer and i have set it on kill apps when screen of and auto kill to crazy and security level high. but every time i click on it there's loads off apps there i kill then then they just come right back.. any ideas how to get ride of them altogether (with out uninstall )
The android system is set to work even wothout app killers...the apps that came back must be meant to be running in background,else that app may not work...and you will not save battery but waste battery instead cause the apps will consume power to restart...

Not all of the apps/services need to be there. You could root your device and room the unwanted apps/services.
if u dont know what r u doing dont do anything or u mess up your phone some apps is system apps
or post the names of apps that u think that u need and ask others can u remove it or block it
Do a search about task killers for Android, you'll find that they do more harm than good. They've been useless since 2.2, and unless you're on 2.1 or lower you are just wasting time and resources by using one.
Uninstall it, you won't notice a drop in battery life. If your phone seems to slow down, you either have too many apps or a phone with very little ram... or both. Uninstall unnecessary apps instead, you can always reinstall them later if needed.
As android needs more memory, it automatically kills the least necessary apps first. So do your phone a favor and let Android do its job.
I wonder if there is a way to prevent some background processes/apps from running instead of constantly killing them? I don't think about using taks killers as they do the same what I can and they also eat memory. I need them apps to run only when I start them. Then I can manually shut them off like I always do, but I don't want them in the backgound processes. For example, even after resetting the phone, I dont use Google Maps at all, but I can see three processes running in background for no reason. And there is more apps behaving in a same way. Of course I don't wanna delete them, because I use them sometimes, some more often, some less.
Any solutions?

No. You have to defreeze them in order to use tgem
If you are talking about system apps, only way to stop their process I know is to uninstall or freeze them
If talking about non-system app, then simply killing them once will stop their process

Use Disable Service to disable background services and BE CAREFULL not to disable wrong services. Or programs may not respond to your wishes...
