After an unfortunately failed experiment at releasing the Droid root exploit after raising money to buy himself a Droid 4 and $300 to charity, the creator of the exploit, Dan Rosenberg has released his root which works on 2.3.6 entitled "Motofail"
http://vulnfactory.org/blog/2012/02/11/rooting-the-droid-4-a-failed-bounty-experiment/
You can download it from the link above and it should be able to root 6.12.173 on Droid RAZR directly without having to OTA rootkeeper 748 and upgrade.
Enjoy~~
And please consider donating to his fund which is still at the link. It all goes to the Red Cross now.

Just tested and DoomLord's unroot works fine, once the phone is rooted. I then rerooted with no problem with this one.
I dont need it at this point but going to buy a new phone. If it works I will donate.

Does anyone know if it's possible to get this exploit updated to run with Mac/Linux? Some of us are very afraid of Windows computers.....

I think it might have something to do with me having the phone rooted already when the update hit and it screwed something up.
Right now I do have SuperUser in my App drawer and I cannot uninstall it. My razr only gives me the option to uninstall updates.
does anyone have any suggestions?

Yea you are gonna have to uninstall SuperUser. If its not letting you then restore to 748 with My Utility (full version) and upgrade up.
I wanna root my Razr but have never done one is it pretty easy to do and is there a guide to step by step you on what to do?

There doesn't seem to be a thread that guides you to obtain only root. All talks of flashing and bootloaders and unlocking has confused me. I only want to gain root access.
I have a US AT&T Atrix that upgraded from the latest Froyo to Gingerbread 4.5.91 through usb cable to the Motorola update software because I wasn't getting it OTA for some reason. (Android Market doesn't detect an update either)
Can anyone help me gain root?
If you were rooted before I believe you can run a script on your computer to give you root access back, though I am trying to find it myself and I've had no luck. I remember reading a few people have done this.
Don't take my word for it though...I could be wrong and I don't want to cause you harm
I did not already have root.

Thanks for the reply but it looks like that article was posted back in February. I'm not sure that it is for the newest update.
Use the /preinstall method on brief mobile, that is a PROVEN root method with OTA GB.
Go to Google & search for - oneclick root for (your device here)

Wait oneclickroot caused an extra Superuser icon mess. Hence why people been using Gladroot and Gingerbreak for a much cleaner root.

So I am to use these instructions from the brief mobile site?
Read the full BriefMobile Motorola Atrix 4G review! The process of rooting your Motorola Atrix 4G has just been changed with the latest updates. We’ve updated the guide below to allow users to root.
How To: Motorola Atrix 4G Root
Root method found and executed by Brandon15811, the2dcour, and of course eval-! Make sure to thank them over at the forums.
Prerequisites:
Drivers installed 32-bit or 64-bit
ADB-Fastboot package
Root image (Mirror)
Outline
1. Extract the ADB-Fastboot package and root image to your C:\ Drive under a new folder titled “root”
2. Put your device into Fastboot mode: – Turn off your device. – Hold down the power button and downward volume button until you see “Fastboot” on your screen – Push the upward volume button
3. Open your command prompt (Start >> run “cmd” >> enter)
4.Type the following commands
Code:
cd C:/root
fastboot flash preinstall root.img
fastboot reboot
5. Enable USB debugging (Settings >> Applications >> Debugging)
6. Type the following commands
Code:
adb shell
/preinstall/dosu
7. Type the following commands
Code:
/bin/mount /system -o remount,rw
cp /preinstall/su /system/bin/su
chmod 6755 /system/bin/su
PATH=/system/bin:$PATH pm install /preinstall/Superuser.apk
Congratulations! You are rooted!

yes, use those steps.
When you get to Step 6 ..after entering this command..
/preinstall/dosu
its going to look like you made an error. ignore it and just keeping typing in the commands
When I get to the last step and type to type in the PATH... command I get:
Failure [INSTALL_FAILED_INSUFFICIENT_STORAGE]
Is the last step just trying installing Superuser or is there a little more to what it is doing?
EDIT: Thanks for the help. I just got Superuser from the market and all root seems to be fine. Thank again!

Details : I lost root.
What happened: Was running stock Rogers RAZR 2.35, rooted with Clockwork on boot.
I upgraded to 2.36 when the upgrade came, and since have lost root.
I tried using MOTOFAIL afterwards to restore, but despite trying, it failed.
Any assistance would be appreciated.

dont think there is really.. i mean as far as i can remember there is a setting in the script that can be changed from 1 to 0 and it wouldnt pop up but then kinda defeats the purpose of the recovery. unless you plan on changing it constantly whenever you need it lol

Looks like you are in store for a full system restore to the original stock image. You can try the recovery image from my signature to get rid of the TWRP recovery if you want. Just place the recovery file in the PDA box and start.
So, is that why I am getting that message when I am trying to root my phone again?

So I have been looking all over the place these last couple of days and have been finding no real help. I have stock MK2 on my Verizon S4 and have successfully got Saferoot on my phone and when running a root checker it says I have root access. Problem being I am trying to get Clockwork recovery on my phone and then flash to CM11 so I can have 4.4. I have tried using Odin but it fails every time and anything over Odin 3 also will not see my device. I have like 20 tabs open on my computer looking and trying everything I can and I am now lost as what to try next. Has anyone successfully got this to work on MK2 and able to walk me through exactly what I need to do? I need to get this on my phone because everything keeps freezing and crashing and I miss having a custom ROM on my phone. Please help

Please help

Last I knew, you cannot install aosp roms unless you have an unlocked bootloader. This means that you don't need safestrap. You would have to be on MDK build, not the latest mk2 build. You will not be able to flash cwm or twrp unless you have a loki'd phone. The safestrap recovery only allows flashing touchwiz roms or the Google edition rom as far as I'm aware of

Sombody correct me if I'm wrong. The way I understand it is if you are on mk2 the only recovery that works is Safestrap. And you can flash only TW based ROMs.

As it's been said in dozens of postings. ..no cm..no asop. Only TW based stock base. Only thru safestrap. And right now hd11.

If you want an AOSP look and feel, check out Eclipse: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2351840
There isn't a fully stable MK2 build yet, but there's a public beta that apparently works very well: http://www.elementalxdesigns.com/ec...-4-3-MK2-MDK-users-Progress-Build06-(12-23-13)
As others have said, Hyperdrive is also very good. I put it on my mom's phone and she's quite pleased with it; personally I really dislike the TW styling, but it's excellent if you can get past that.
I am getting so burnt out searching everywhere for answers so I'll just ask straight up. Am I able to get 4.4 with hyperdrive yet and is HD my only option? If it is what version do I need (a link would be nice). If I use HD do I just go to recovery mode and do a wipe/clear and then install the ROM from zip? If I could just get some clear cut answers that would be awesome, my eyes are getting tired from all the reading about this...

No you cannot get any 4.4 rom. Mk2 is 4.3 as is the only stable rom for us on safestrap. Go to the development section and read through the safestrap thread. If you have a specific question after thoroughly reading up on it I'm sure many will be happy to answer, but you will be hard pressed to find someone to rewrite the installation instructions/warnings/etc that are posted in the safestrap thread.
This thread outlines the process in some detail (yet is for updating first, steps you would obviously ignore).

Yes, thanks. Wish it was an oversight but it's not rooted. Using Root Checker by Joeykrim, it reports device is not rooted. Also downloaded terminal emulator and checked at prompt on phone.

It's unfortunate that you didn't read that before flashing.

The "device not found" stuff is weird. What it means is that your phone dropped the USB connection while in the middle of rooting.\
I've been spending a lot of time tonight re-flashing my phone and tweaking the saferoot script. Give it another try and post in that thread.
Fixed by reflashing stock MK2 from Kies.
