Nookie Froyo 0.6.8
is a development build of Froyo 2.2.1 for the Nook Color.
ClockworkMod flashable! - info below, please *read carefully* before flashing!
This build is near-AOSP and contains almost no extra software not deemed required for the device to function normally.
It is pre-rooted with SuperUser, busybox, SoftKeys v3.07, and ROM Manager 3.0.0.5 however.
The eventual intention will be a build that other devs and users can easily fork and create their own custom builds, themes, roms, etc.

The microSD card image contains 4 partitions:
/dev/block/mmcblk1p1 : boot (fat32)

Use these partition IDs when following guides that require mounting/remounting filesystems.

This build was created using the B&N kernel sources for 1.0.0, Omappedia's Froyo source ( currently RLS27.9.0.RC0 ), and binary drivers from TI for wireless, SGX530 acceleration, and DSP codecs.

This SD image requires a 2GB microSD card! Bigger is OK, smaller is not ok!
Note: if you wish to use a larger microSD card, you can use a partition editor to increase the size of the /sdcard partition (partition 4, fat32) *after* writing the image to your card.
Simply unzip this image and dd the file to your (empty) SD card, just like nooter.

*IMPORTANT*
- please wipe data/factory reset if you're coming from B&N stock firmware or another rom!!
- please see other threads about installing and using CWM recovery - keep this thread to NF issues please
- this has been tested only using CWM 3.0.0.5 downloaded from market, be warned it may not work with IOMonster's kit or other versions. Let us know if you try and it does!
- replaces kernel and ramdisk - if you were using an alternate kernel you'll need to reflash it.
- This will irrevocably erase and replace the software on your eMMC! MAKE BACKUPS BEFORE FLASHING, you have been warned.
If you're upgrading from an older version of Nookie Froyo, you should not have to wipe - however if you do have problems *wipe data* and try again.
*IMPORTANT* - this zip does not require any extra steps such as formatting /boot, changing system permissions, and does not replace or remove CWM. If you are coming from a ROM that required these extra steps and are having issues, *please post your questions there* so the dev can be prompted to correct those issues properly.

Installing /system will take some time, and the progress bar doesn't update in realtime; you haven't 'locked up', just be patient as it may take a few minutes.

Do not try to Format SD card from Settings -> SD & Phone storage!
- there is currently a bug that causes the system to format the /boot partition instead of /sdcard when this option is used, leaving your NC unbootable. Format your SD card in your PC or another device if you need to! - fixed in 0.6.8!
FIRST BOOT TIPS -
On first boot, Launcher and SoftKeys will fight for control of the home intent - that is, when you boot the first time, your NC will ask you to pick your home activity.
*CHOOSE LAUNCHER* at first (DO NOT select 'always use this action'), and let the system boot and stabilize (3-4 minutes).
Hit Home (the N button). You'll be asked to choose your activity again, this time choose SoftKeys.
Try using one of the SU-required buttons (back or menu), and after a few moments SuperUser will prompt you to accept the action.
SoftKeys 3.06+ now prompt for SU permission at startup, just accept the superuser prompt when it pops, you'll still want to let the system stabilize for a minute or two.
If SoftKeys fails to ask for SU permissions, "Unable to execute as root":
Go to Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications -> 'All'
Select SoftKeys from the list
'Force close' Softkeys if it's running, then 'Clear defaults'
Hit the N button, choose SoftKeys when prompted to choose your home action, accept the SU prompt when it pops.
Workarounds for some known bugs/issues:
(default in 0.5.8+) Improved Refresh-rate (no flicker! thanks [mbm]!): this should set the refresh rate to 68hz, the supposed default for the Nook Color's LCD panel -

Browser: force closes when opening a website that tries to use location services, due to the missing GPS. Try browsing to a url by typing in the google search box, and if you can get into the browser menu changing your homepage away from google will stop it from FC'ing on open.
Lockscreen wrong size: Simply reboot to correct this.
Touchscreen is slow/unresponsive:
Turn your screen off and then back on.
Disable Haptic Feedback in Settings -> Sounds.

To answer from the other thread...
Timeframe-- well, this isn't me doing this. But I think the devs just want to take the edges off, so be patient... I'm just the messenger on the news that it's been done. This is other people's accomplishment.
In fact, froyo was done weeks ago, though not entirely from open-source/freely distributed components like this (as far as I know).
To answer some questions--
BT not working, FM not working, accellerometer not working. Softkeys should work... dont' see why not anyway. It's stock froyo. No gapps, no Superuser.apk, no nothing over and above AOSP. Overclocking not in but should be possible... video playback hasn't been tried (it's early still!).... battery life who knows I haven't even had a chance to let it run down... I posted because the news was "out" anyway. I also can't compare to stock because I've never run stock, believe it or not. But it's based on the same kernel 2.6.29. It boots off a SD partitioned for system, data, cache, and sdcard. Only thing (I think) it touches on the internal storage is resetting that boot counter, otherwise you'd only get 7 boots at a time. Doesn't need much space. 2GB should be enough. That's what phones have anyway. Guess it depends what you want to do with it. Performance is decent, not steller compared to my g2 at least. Will benefit from OC.

I got my SD to boot tonight!
It defiantly isn't for the faint of heart but it seems to work well enough as a good base to start on. Pretty snappy to boot.
I would like to emphasize that this is VERY rough around the edges and if you aren't planning on hacking with the kernel, or code, or attempting to make your own rom then this is NOT for you.

Does this include a working JIT or is that one of the things in progress?
That seems to be one of the more compelling things from froyo (at least for a device with more internal storage than a nexus one). I would expect (well, hope anyway) that the froyo JIT would have a noticeable impact on the speed...

You also have the option of converting the volume buttons to back/menu as well. It is documented in this thread, but the filenames have changed in this build. You will need to modify the following files..
/system/usr/keylayout/qwerty.kl
/system/usr/keylayout/twl4030-keypad.kl
I am not a developer.
I am not likely to become one at this stage of the game...
I am, however, either brave or stupid because I am downloading the image and will see if it will boot on my NC.
I do this because:
A) I want to SEE froyo running on my NC, and
2) If I have any problems, feedback might help the devs
I love seeing all the progress that has been made on these things.

I tested flash and it does work.. The flash plugin is not included in the build however, I had to find it and install it via ADB.
Just rebooted back to my regular rooted NC system after pulling the sdcard and can only say-
Marvelous.
Yes, it is slow, no keyboard and all of the other things that were spoken of in the initial posts, but IT WORKS.
I don't have time to do much else with it right at the moment, but I will mess with it more later.

Could you post the flash plugin you used? I would really appreciate it. Could you also comment on the quality of flash videos online. I'd like to watch espn3 on the nook...in bed...lol
OK, so I booted the rom, and followed the instructions at nookdevs...
Installing superuser.apk and pushing su seemed to work just fine!!!
Softkeys installed and got superuser permissions and works as well.
Installed astro file manager, and that works fine too...
At that point, I wanted to mount the usb storage and move over a bunch of APK files... mounted the nook and could only see the mlo, img file etc... no problem creating an apk folder and putting files in there, but then I can't see that folder when I look for it in astro....
Any info on simply copying files via USB using this build?

[NARS] is the Nook Automated Rooting System FOR MAC and LINUX
This program has been a WIP for myself for about a month, and I developed it so that people whom wanted to work with the adb development, and “bricking” of devices could quickly restore their devices to root. This program can also be used for a new user to, backup their programs, restore their programs, Root, Unroot, and Full restore.
Initializing ADB:
Download any app, and attempt to install it.
You can use this app if you need.
[*]Click on the Package Installer, and then a prompt will pop up asking if you want change the settings to allow 3rd party apps.
*DO NOT ENABLE 3RD PARTY IF YOU WISH TO ACCESS ADB*
I am working on a way to have it enabled by default.
[*]In the settings page you should see *2* USB Debugging modes.
*NOTE: if you disable automount, Debugging will maintain through unplugs
[*]Press them both and accept the prompt.
[*]PLUG IN YOUR DEVICE.
Note* You should see the Android Development icon on the bottom of the screen.
ADB will now be able to see your device. How ever you will need to restart the server before it sees it.
As it stands right now this scrip has 4 functions, and a video will be made for it tomorrow.

Ubuntu 11.10 not showing my nt
Are there any tricks to getting an Ubuntu 11.10 system to show the nook tablet in the list of attached devices? On my laptop the list is empty. The laptop does see the nook, both the on-board flash and the SD memory. But NARS.sh doesn't find it.
New Nook Tablet, first time plugged into the Ubuntu laptop.

do me a favor and go into the NARS directory and type

I lost track of when I'd had the debug settings enabled. Between all my windows boxes, which all loaded a generic driver before I could use the custom drivers, and getting the linux box set for android development, I lost track of the last setting on the nook - I forgot to "measure twice and cut once" - I didn't go back to make sure debug was still enabled.
The reminder about the debug was the key.

Did not work on a mac running Lion. My nook is never detected. Clear, detailed instructions that are self-contained in the first post would be appreciated.

Factory restore & initial setup
Browse to this:

It should say "install blocked"
Press settings
Tick unknown sources (press ok)

Tick the other USB debugging further down
Untick Automount
Back/Back
Connect the Nook to the MAC. On the nook you should see "USB debugging connected" in notifications center
Now follow the instructions in post #1 of this thread.
After you have run that script, reboot your nook tablet (you can turn it off all the way by pressing and holding for a few seconds the power button. Then turn the nook tablet back on).
You need to make sure that you install golauncherex, which I forgot to do. Just find the .apk that you downloaded (go_launcher_ex_v2.66.apk in your notifications center on the nook) and then make sure to install it. This will give you a new homescreen with all of your regular apps.

Information and Modules description
I was in the need to add some missing kernel modules to my Xperia Mini Pro sk17i with v4.0.2.A.0.58, but I could only find modules compiled form ICS sources, so I decided to build them myself.
All modules have been compiled from official sony Xperia v4.0.2.A.0.58 kernel sources, using Android NDK r5, and they should be fine with any GB based Xperia 2011 device (with that kernel version at least).
This is the list of modules, with some interesting programs using them:
fuse.ko: Cryptonite (used to create encrypted EncFS or Truecrypt volumes, adds support to mount drives so that are visibile to the whole Android system. Note: Cryptonite is not currently able to load the module automatically, you need to load it from Terminal Emulator..se more below)
usb-storage.ko, nls_utf8.ko, ntfs.ko (compiled with write support, currently untested): USB OTG Helper (used to mount external USB drives with USB On The Go cables).
cifs.ko, slow-work.ko, md4.ko: CifsManager (used to mount network shares)
ext4.ko, jbd2.ko: if you wish to use the EXT4 filesystem
tun.ko: needed by VPN clients, like OpenVPN or DroidVPN
Installation Instructions
Attached to this post you will find a ZIP that can be used along with CWM Recovery to install the modules in system.
Download the module, put it inside you SD card, reboot your phone in CWM (which you can install with the Xperia CWM Auto-Installer) and select install zip from sdcard, and browsed to the ZIP. Reboot your phone when install finishes.
Loading Modules
No module is automatically loaded at system startup: this saves your memory and battery (some of those modules are known to drain your battery if always loaded).
To manually load a module you have to open the Android Terminal Emulator and tap:

where MODULENAME is the name of the module you want to load.

to unload a module.
If you wish to manually load a module at phone startup you should use init.rd or any other method (?) to run custom scripts at startup.
Load Order
Some modules need to be loaded in a specific order:
slow-work.ko must be loaded before cisf.ko
jbd2.ko must be loaded before ext4.ko

Yes, the same applies to CifsManager, even if it requires some fiddling in options, while your USB OTG Helper does it automagically...by the way, it would be really nice of you if you could add the same auto-load code to Cryptonite, which is open source somewhat related to your work! :good:

I have my own encryption script, and I am happy with it.. So no fiddling with cryptonite for me
Updated both install and uninstall packages to fix cifs.ko and ext4.ko that couldn't be loaded because of missing dependencies (slow-work.ko and jbd2.ko).
You can find the updated zips in the first post.

I don't know where to find it, I don't have upgraded to ICS yet, sorry.
If you are sure that no one have released it I may build a package similar to this one once I upgrade to ICS, in the coming weeks. Keep an eye on this forum :cyclops:

Sorry, that the post got that long - hope that someone is still so kind to read and answer to it. I just wanted to be as precise as possible in the desription of my problem.
And here it comes. As the title of my post already implies, my ultimate goal is to mount nfs shares of my NAS and Router in my private network as user-friendly and simple as possible.
So far, I tried the following to achieve this goal:

created a mount-point for the nfs share

I tried to manually mount the share in the terminal. Without busybox i had no luck, but actually that was not sursprising at all. With busybox however, it worked instantly - what indeed surprised me, because this thread here implied somehow the kernel, as is, wasn't even capable to do it without additional modules. I could easily browse the share with ES file manager etc. and make use of my shares. So far, so great. :good:

During the troubleshooting I stumbled upon this post, and thx to zxp's files, i managed to add the kernel modules to my /system/lib/modules folder (and yes, I have the exact same original/stock GB kernel version they are intended for).
But still no luck - even after i added slow-work.ko to the list of modules loaded by cifsmanager in the properties (placed before cifs.ko as it was suggested by another thread found somewhere in the forum). The info tab states the modules are loaded, but i still receive the same crooked "Invalid argument" message. What the heck am I doing wrong?
Seems to me there is some sort of general syntax issue - here is what info I give the app:
Share: 192.xxx.xxx.x.x:/my/nfs/share
Mount Point: /mnt/MyLocalFolder (tested with and without the mount point prefix in properties)
User: guest (default - without it, it wont work,app description states it will be ignored for nfs shares anyway)
Pwd: left empty
Options:nolock, vers=3 (tested with and without these - but where generally considered essential in some threads + my shares are nfs_v3)
Does somebody have an idea what is going wrong and might point me in some useful direction?

Well, yeah - that was an option. I already did, and it works with the busybx mount as stated.
But i would have to write another to mount another share, unmount them, and one to prevent ES file manager to somehow occupy the mount to make it busy before unmounting etc.
I hoped that cifsmanager would smooth and ease the mounting/unmounting.

This is a program I made because i just rooted for the first time this weekend and even though it is really easy I almost bricked my nook. This program I have made I hope will try to prevent any bricking. If you cant understand the tool/tutorial you shouldn't be rooting. How it works is i have downloaded most of the applications needed to root a nook. I am not responsible for anything that happens to your nook from this tool. There is one application i was not able to add in and that is Minitool partition wizard, however I did include the setup in the application. This tool is for 8 and 16gb nook tablets running 1.4.3. IT MUST BE A NOOK TABLET NOT COLOR OR HD. This shows you step by step on how to get CMW(clockworkmod recovery) and a basic custom rom. It does not have cyanogenmod in the image file. And once more I am not responsible for anything that may happen to your nook or any trouble that can come from it. If by any chance you nook does get bricked look up a video on how to unbrick your nook tablet. This is my first post and public application so if you can tell me if it worked for you and what I can change about the program. I did not make any of the applications in the program other than the program itself. Please give me feed back on this tool.

Since I have Never Rooted any Android device I would like to keep things as simple as possible. The closest I have done with Windows is making a Hiren's BootCD From USB Flash Drive. http://www.hiren.info/pages/bootcd-on-usb-disk Which had easy to follow instructions.
Also would like to ask your advice as to the cyanogenmod version you would recommend for the Nook Tablet to do the things I mentioned?
Did some checking and the Android Audio Video Players I will be using (MX or VLC) do not list a min ver only "varies with device" so makes this a little more difficult?
