Here is the review. Whats your thoughts?
Sadly that decrease in performance doesn't come with an increase in battery life. A healthy 2,500mAh cell lies beneath the flimsy (and scratch-prone) battery cover here, far larger than your typical smartphone. (The most recent Galaxy S II, for example, has an 1,850mAh pack.) But, longevity just fell on the long side of average, with the phone managing eight hours and eight minutes on our standard rundown test in an HSPA+ area. That's with LTE enabled but not connected, as there's annoyingly no way of disabling it. (Even dialing *#*#4636#*#* doesn't work.) The previous Note managed a healthy 90 minutes longer.

Hrm... guess I gotta find out what endgadgets "standard rundown" test consists of.
Great find though OP

The Note is big, but not unmanageably so. Those with small hands might find it a bit unwieldy at times, but even if your glover has you written down as XS you shouldn't rule this out completely. After a few hours with the Note you'll very quickly become accustomed to the size, and once you have you won't want to go back.

Really don't like how the International Note got an 1.5 hours(!!) longer battery life than the AT&T version
Yea. AT&T has gotta start building in a way to turn LTE on/off if you want, especially since the entire West coast doesn't have it. Hopefully, someone will find a way to incorporate an on/off switch after it gets in a few more hands.

Bummer...lower battery life and scratch-prone back cover? (must be referring to the white Note)

i would think the blue would show scratches easier but thats just me when i carried a skyrocket white you couldnt see any of the scratches until you looked super close

In that case I hope the Note battery cover is made of the same process/color as the SR!
I doubt the blue would scratch easily since its textured while the white looks super glossy. Good thing international version replacement battery covers are cheap and plentiful...especially since we can't use NFC yet.

What you mean? I'm in the East Bay area and I do have it. 25/9 down at home at least, and downtown Danville, 50kbps down sometimes, 45 is more usual while driving = perfect video skype calls better than at home, kids had a blast last week when the wife was in London, talking in the 8.9 LTE all the way home (then I hit it, AT&T's LTE anchor boat was dropped but that's another story).
Well that's a good unbiased review. It is unsettling the performance thing, as many others warned about from the beginning.
I had the International version and sold it, so i'm comfortable with getting this
ATT phone and testing it to see if it's doable or not.
If it's not, I will return it. No Biggy (at least I THINK Att has a 30 day window).
They had better
I got to play with one at my local AT&T store and was amazed at it. Zero lag while scrolling between screens and very fast while on HSPA + backhaul speeds. The store rep said it had the best battery life of any phone he has used to date. I can't wait for Friday. I was getting around 5/1.2 on the speed test and thats fairly respectable for our area in Mississippi. Again can't wait.

There's quite a bit of exaggeration in these reviews when talking about the Snapdragon S3 vs. the Equinox. Sure, the Equinox gets slightly better benchmarks, but that doesn't mean the usability of the phone performs any worse (which we've seen in video reviews).

I really like the look of that white Note. She is a beauty and I chickened out at the last minute and ordered the Carbon Blue. With my three teen and pre teen boys playin with it all the time, it would have been a dirty mess.

Austin just got LTE and my boss just got the skyrocket. Screen seems about the same from what I saw but performance stock wise the ogsII was much faster but internet was smoking. I keep hearing that a rooted and romed skyrocket performs just as good so now the decision to keep the ogsII just got tougher. Anyone else in their 30 day window and considering jumping ship?
Nope.

I had my GSII then switched to the SR for a few weeks. Honestly I like the size of my i777 much better than the SR. I couldn't notice much difference in performance but dev support was another huge factor for me.
Really they're both great devices... just happy to be away from ios once and for all.

ok, thanks for the replies!!
Is there anyway to get better dl/up speed on the ogsII? On the inspire, there were many different radios and APNs that one could use to get good bandwidth. If I could get consistantly get 5mbps down, i'd be more than content.
You could try flashing a different modem. There's a thread in the development section.
There are some TCP buffer tweaks in my kernel that might help.
The only thing the SR has to offer is faster data when it's actually working - which is apparently not something you can count on with the SR, I've been seeing lots of reports of problems with data dropping and poor battery performance.
Just flashed kj1 with your keranl entropy but I still don't see the speed my inspire used to get. I could get 4 down consistently on the inspire but only see 2 down on gs2

battery life is pretty bad (like 4-6% an hour idle, 10+% with light usage)
i have not had ANY network connectivity problems, but what is the common factor in those complaining of network loss? do they have LTE in their area, or are they strictly on fauxg?

dont forget, i am in an LTE area, i have my wifi off and running touchdown for my exchange email (set to poll every 10 minutes)
i have had much better battery life from my OG GS2, running unnamed rom with the same setup, aside from LTE of course.
if you live in an LTE area and want LTE, go skyrocket, if you dont live in an LTE area or expect to get it in the coming months, go OG GS2.
aside from the battery life (which doesnt matter much to me since i always have chargers handy) its a good phone, despite what others here feel about it.
it is true, that its not as fast in benchmarks, but after loading up my own custom rom on my skyrocket, it can hang with my GS2 running unnamed in usage, but it flies when it comes to downloading/browsing the web. i like the physical feel of the OG GS2 better too. if i didnt have LTE in my area, i wouldnt have the skyrocket, lol.

I have an inspire and the gs2 is always faster with data here. Mostly because it gets way better reception. I lived in tribalart's radio thread flashing radio/ril combo's trying to get that damn thing to have a decent signal. It isn't the phone either because i have have 2 inspires, one early build the other a late nd they both suck signal strength wise.
I do notice that the speetest app is way off on my gs2 but in the site it's right

I had the SR for about a week. Living in a non-LTE area, I found the battery to be weak. I could stretch it out to 18 hours if I only used the phone for reading email, but as soon as I started using the phone as a phone, tried to do any web browsing, or just playing around, then battery life dropped.
With the SII, I can stretch to 36 hours with only email reading, and easily go 18 to 24 while actually using the phone for phone calls and whatever else I have the silly thing for.
The screen resolution thing is really not an issue. Compare the PPI with your computer monitor and you might suddenly stop seeing "jagged" characters on your phone (or you'll never stop seeing them on your computer monitor.)
Physical size was a minor annoynace (but an annoyance still) for me. The SR just barely went over the threshold of being comfortable for me. (Of course, I'd get over that if I could have a Note.)
CIQ is/was a big deal for me. I can not and will not support a device that contains that rootkit, even if I can remove it. The ONLY way I have to influence AT&T is with my money, and by returning a CIQ device (SR) and buying a non-CIQ device (SII), I've given the strongest message I can (short of terminating my service.)

Have you activated a 4G plan? AT&T seems to be throttling HSPA+ devices that use the old wap.cingular APN
A coworker just bought a Rezound and has been getting really great battery life. Over 24hours with 40% remaining (with light usage, he is new to Android). This blows my mind because I've forgotten to unplug my phone overnight and saw it run down 5% an hour with the screen off.
I checked to see if they snuck a software update but he is running the same 1.02.605.6 as I. But my PRL is 15088 and his is 15098.
How do you update PRL?
Also, what is your PRL?
Mine is also 15088.

At Verizon Tech Support they can push the newest eprl and re provision your SIM from their end but there isn't a way an end user can really request an EPRL update as it's supposed to happen periodically when it's necessary. That being said, 15098 is definitely the latest for 4G smartphones and if the server has setup the push to your MDN then pull your battery and SIM out for approx 1 minute and re-power it all back up, walk away from the phone for about 5 minutes and then check it to see if it updated.

Just did precisely that, and it is still 15088. Powered off, Removed SIM and batt for 2 mins. Powered back up, waited 10 mins. Still 15088
I'm sure this isn't a huge deal since 4G is very strong in my area, but it could be something to do with how it is provisioned on their end. I also have the problem with 4G continually dropping out while Mobile Hotspot is turned on.

what that means is that your line hasn't received the push/flag for the EPRL update...if it really bothered you, call them and ask them to push the EPRL and I'm sure they can facilitate it, just make sure you don't call from your phone and make sure it's OFF when they do the push

Yea, I wouldn't bother, if you were somewhere it mattered the only negative impact would be that you just wouldn't get new 4G data towers since that EPRL was released, which was in early December.

My understanding of a custom kernel underclocking is that it only does it when the phone is in an unused state then when you're actively using the phone the overclocking takes effect and then you'll be running at 1.83GHz. Plus, the EVO isn't dual core is it?

I understand the benefits of overclocking and underclocking, and there is always a compromise. A topic entirely outside the scope of this thread.
I've been on the G2x since about when it came out (horrible decision...) I've made that phone mostly usable to me but because of nVidia, the devs are always going to be stuck with no drivers for Tegra.
I see I can get the Amaze for free right now at T-Mo. Is it worth it? I know it doesn't have ICS yet but I assume that's coming (there's a certain update to ICS exchange support that makes it a very important update for me so I can get my work email)
Battery life on the G2x has always been pretty miserable for me too. I got that phone way too early and there wasn't enough people using it to really research it at the time. I'm hoping to avoid that mistake with whatever my next phone is.
1- The Amaze does have ICS, in fact, you wont find a GB Rom in the front page of development
2- Amaze battery Life is amazing for me
3- gdfgsdgrgregesrgersgsg??!?!?!
4-Search before posting?
5- a squirrel??
The Amaze does have ICS with Sense 3.6
The phone might look free but they will charge you the extra $15-$20 a month on your bill for the phone.
Don't get me wrong, this is a great phone and since we got the ICS leak its been even better. But with other phones releasing around the corner it might be a wise choice to wait for different options. But I'm not saying that the new phones will be better just saying wait till you find out what you really want.
-------------------------------------
Check out my hairless guinea pig
I know about the ICS leak but that's not official yet And I love rooting my phones...but I've been using my G2x for a year so I'm quite acquainted with all my options. It will always take a while to figure out what ROMs are good for me (personally) or not on any given phone. I've been bitten by too many 'promised' official releases that never happened to never assume.
I'll do a little more research on this one but maybe I'll keep waiting. If I can make it until Google releases all their phones...

To be honest, I think the Amaze is so-so. I've been fortunate enough to have tried quite a few phones and the Amaze hasn't done a great job standing out.
The biggest problem with this phone is that the battery life is beyond terrible - worse than any phone I've had in the past. I mainly use my phone (or any of my smartphones for that matter) to respond to business emails and texts. My phone doesn't even last half of the day without needing a full recharge.
I had a G2X and although I wasn't too fond of its build quality (especially how the screen is not completely flat), I would suggest that you stick with it. There aren't too many improvements (in my opinion) that justifies the jump.

I'm very happy that i got the Amaze when i did but back then there was little to no Dev on it,but in the past month or so since S-OFF & the ICS "leak" there's been a ton of Development for it,I'm loving SpeedROM which is blazing fast & has great battery life.I came from a Sensation(which i still have but am looking to sell),the Sensation has a shiat ton of ROMs but they're all the same basically. The Amaze has a beast of a camera,is blazing fast with both cores running & Sense 3.6 is the icing on the cake,i just can't wait for Sense 4.0.
So...In my opinion the HTC Amaze is a GREAT phone(build quality is superb). If i were to add another line I'd grab another one ;-)

I agree with everything except booming development... There are less than 10 devs and not much variety to choose from. Not to mention, they're all the same devs we had with gingerbread.
Don't get me wrong, they make solid stable roms, but quantity is not the case. Check other, global market phones dev sections

Yeah it's so weird. Some people are reporting excellent battery life and others are reporting poor battery life. If it helps, I'm using the stock ROM on 2.3.4 (HTC Sense 3.0). I'm getting a replacement this Friday since the speaker randomly pops when listening to music and using the buttons on the bottom. Hopefully the phone lasts longer than this one or else I'm going to have to get a replacement battery. If none of those fix the problem, time to fire up the old MyTouch.

First off you are incorrect, that was a classic plan price, not value. Value is only sold online currently as SIM only service, phone and EIP are not given online.
regardless, the free Amaze is over and its back to $150
So what are you looking for? I've used an S2, Sensation, HD2, Vibrant, and Amaze within the past 18 months. Here are my pros/cons of my Amaze experience.
Pros:
Stable - few reboots
Best of breed camera
Build is solid
HTC mail app is better than some Android skins
Good form factor - big enough, but not too big
Resilient screen - seems more scratch-resistant than some others
Dedicated camera/camcorder buttons
Impressive data speeds
Cons:
Original battery started to occasionally lose sync with OS (which resulted in $8 to Carrier in exchange for backup battery)
Low Development on XDA
Light bleed from softkeys
NFC doesn't seem to work as advertised
Since getting the Amaze, my priorities have shifted from constant theming and modding to other things because of the lack of development and (until recently) impossibility of S-off. Now I've come to appreciate being able to effortlessly RMA my phone if necessary, and while waiting for ICS was occasionally difficult, Tmo anounced its availability in 5 days. I expect battery life to increase, latency to decrease with dual-core utilization, hopefully usefulness added to the NFC capability. But as mentioned before, if you need Roms enjoy your phone, look elsewhere.

It's not that weird... Usage varies between users. Juice defender does the trick for me... If u want a long lasting battery, don't wake your phone... It's simply a battery hogging display... And that is that

How is it not weird. Some people are talking/surfing/watching movies for hours on their phone and get hardly any battery depreciation whereas others (me included) are checking emails and texts and not even getting 6 hours of usage.
Don't wake the phone? What's the point of having a cell phone if you're not going to use it...

Lol maybe u took me the wrong way. People with great battery life use aftermarket batteries and apps like juice defender. Some of them may also exaggerate their usage. Bottom line doesn't change.
With stock OEM battery, no juice defender, AND you use your phone, you ABSOLUTELY have ****ty battery life. It's simple. Not weird.
Also, some people use more widgets than others, more sync options, notification options... This isn't rocket science
Also, tapatalk is the biggest battery hog ever.

Motorola aiming to upgrade all possible devices to Jelly Bean, promises to give you $100 credit if it can't
http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/05/motorola-jelly-bean-upgrades/
That's actually pretty interesting.
Thinking about it a bit it seems to work out in Moto's favor quite a bit. They'll update their newest phones and the people who are using their older phones will have incentive to get a newer model and thus give them more money.
HTC could do something like this.
I don't know that I'd buy another motorola, don't get me wrong, I love the phones, but the locked bootloader and slowness of updates kinda kills it for me. They're probably doing this to keep business from going elsewhere due to these problems.

Not exactly the same. If they failed to upgrade I wouldnt want to buy another phone they'll fail with
thats not exactly hard to do since they have the line in there all "new and currently selling devices..."....doesn't cover stuff sold 1yr ago...so in that case HTC could easily cover this as the ONE series as a whole should be able to get it....ie they could say it and NOT upgrade the EVO3D and not have to pay 100bux as the evo3d isn't being sold anymore brand new since its EOL at sprint...
I'd take a HTC running ICS over moto running JB any day of the week!
Can't stand the subpar display moto uses.
Slightly off topic but HTC should have hired Steve Kondik
Got stuck with a permalock bootloader on the photon and complained until I got an early upgrade to this phone. Plus they promised ics for the phone right outta the gate and peeps will be lucky to get it before 2013. I will not buy moto again, no way no how.

HTC should do the same AS WELL AS make it mandatory that all their phones have removable batteries AND make them last all day because NONE of the current crop of phones has a battery that can last 24 hours. All the screen shots that show that much time are from people that don't really use the phone much at all.
Also a micro sd in addition to internal storage should have been mandatory

Over a day with over 3 hours of screen on time which included video streaming is pretty damn impressive considering how I was using a high brightness setting and how big the screen on this phone is.
You're expecting too much without showing any understanding of why it isn't easy to get a high end phone to last all day. It has high powered components that draw more power, as well as a bigger screen than most phones on the market. What we get from it is impressive and it isn't going to dramatically improve anytime soon, unless they start to include DROID RAZR MAXX sized batteries, which I doubt will happen soon.

I don't think i expect too much, just a battery that can last 24 hours with normal usage.
I couldn't even get 24 hours out of the raxr maxx although it came the closest.
Basically you're saying you get over a day while only using the phone for 3 hours. On a work day I'll do 4 hours just to and from work, then time during lunch and sporadic phone checks during the day and after so many hours of use, phone dies.
My galaxy s 3 had gotten me 17 hours once, but the phone was just sitting there for the most part.
I tested the standby time and just let it drain and got 3 days it of it, would have been more of i didn't send that text lol

You're getting stuck on the concept that you're only "using" your phone for as long as the screen is on. Even when the screen is off, it's doing a lot of work.
With current battery technology paired with high powered phones, you just aren't going to get that full day with a ton of screen on use that you want. We all want that. It's just not really possible right now.

I'd go for the one that has the best hardware stats so long as it also had a good & stable custom rom to use with it.

Thanks for eveyones input.. decided to keep 2 phones.. HTC One S and Amaze.. Use Amaze for when I go traveling.. and backup if the other fails for whatever reason... so anyone interested in an HTC sensation??? please pm and/or look in marketplace when I have time to post it up.
Good call! I would have kept the amaze if I had to choose just one since due to our amazing developers we have a very decent selection of roms. I would rather have the option of double battery life (due to removable battery) over the slight increase in speed with the one s - dedicated camera buttons and extra storage (with removable sd card isn't bad either) so the extra hardware capabilities definitely make the amaze a better device than the one s (and if you really wanted some extra speed you could always over clock faux kernel) but then again the amaze is no slow poke. Sensation is not even in the same league and selling the one s (if you don't need it) would get you considerably more money versus selling the amaze (people have the mind set "latest is greatest" which isn't always true). A true upgrade would be the one x+, Samsung s3 (if you like Samsung devices, I personally don't), or the Nexus 4 (because of aesthetics, blazing fast, the feel of a first class device in hand and of course amazing developer + Google support). Hope my analysis helped

Hate to say it but the Amaze. The One S is HARDLY an upgrade... if at all. No extsd is a deal breaker if u enjoy music and whatnot. The camera is also better on the Amaze than the one s (I have owned both). The sensation should be the first to go, as its the worst of the 3. I would personally sell them all and buy an S3 and be done buying phones for a while.
The battery sucks on the Amaze, and it has a few minor hw quirks, but is the best of those 3

well what sold me on the HTC One S is the weight and wifi calling.. I carry it with me all day.. ( actually carry both amaze, htc one s and the razr.. *smh*.. want to narrow down to just 2) I barely can tell its in my pocket. Not sure if thats a good or bad thing.. but damn and the battery life on it for my use was great.. I would get 10+hrs on Amaze.. and 2hr screen time..which is good.. but with the HTC One S I'm getting 17h with 3h screen time. Doing the same thing I would normally do. And I get wifi calling with sense 4.X and working BT.. if I could get that combo on amaze.. then I'd stick with the amaze.. I really like the device.. screen is WAYYYYY better on the amaze compared to the one s.. night and day.. but not one of my priorities.. need a phone more.. so made my choice.. but i'm not going anywhere.. still staying here.. hoping for a new tmobile base rom to come up with wifi calling working.
I don't know why people say battery life sucks... People just need to find the right combo. Yes wifi calling and bluetooth doesn't work on this rom but every thing else is buttery smooth with tremendous battery... Even if i try to i cant run the battery down. What does the s3 get? Those are similar to s3 numbers... but for ppl that use their phone for other things then just screen. We have a battery thread too and most ppl get 5-7 hrs of screen time with 14-16 hrs off charger... and actually do stuff like play music, text and make phone calls. For most, the amaze has a hard time getting 4 hrs of screen time. And its thinner... more sleek and lightweight... faster... no hw quirks like squeeky backcover, working wifi calling and Bluetooth, etc.
And if you wanted to run the battery down, we both know you can. I can kill mu battery in 9-10 hrs but I will have 7-8 hrs of screen time. Its also pretty to get over 1 day of battery when you count the 6-8 hrs of sleep when your phone is on standby. Lol

I mean I wasn't doing any competition with the s3 but since I am on vacation and most friends that I have here are in school prepping for finals I don't get many calls and maybe do about 15 texts so I just play games and search forums, news, and Facebook. I think that's using a phone significantly, and I am not a huge fan of listening to music but if I did I would still get similar battery life as music play back isn't that battery intensive. My response to you was because you rag on the amaze battery life quite severely and that's not necessarily the case all the time. We have some decent roms now and yes I don't keep auto sync on because it isn't necessary or keep screen brightness on max for the same reason. I took the screen shot a couple of days ago because I have read quite a few posts complaining about battery life so wanted to prove that the amaze is quite capable of holding it's own on this department. I have no squeaky cover issue you speak of, no wifi problems, and bluetooth not working is due to rom... I am no businessman so I don't like wearing a bluetooth piece in my ear and the size of the amaze is just right that you don't look ridiculous holding it to your ear. Screen on doesn't mean that I am staring at a blank screen... But anyway I wouldn't use a Samsung device (unless it was a premium quality nexus device, not galaxy nexus or nexus s... As they all feel cheap including s3, only exception was the at&t s1 which felt good in the hands) but to each their own. Just saying not every one is an s3 fan o and the standby time is to show how well the phone /rom can idle which is very important too imo.

I rag the Amaze battery life soley because it is a notorious issue with the Amaze. There were countless threads about it. Many users left the amaze because of the battery. I'll admit that after a long while, there are roms that are better on battery life now, but I'm just speaking from my and others personal experiences. You do have wifi issues... since wifi calling doesn't work. Bluetooth is used for way more than headsets (music, gaming, etc.) and some states enforce hands free while driving so even the headsets aren't just for businessmen (I don't use them either for the record). You werw one of the lucky ones with no squeaky back cover. I had to put a piece of paper in my backcover for it to stop. There is also light bleed from the softkeys and in the flash of the camera which seems to be cheap build quality to me. You say the s3 feels cheap, others say it's lightweight. Lol The weight of a phone doesn't determine build quality is all I'm saying, and the Amaze is the heaviest phone I've held (before the note2)... but like you said, it's personal preference.
Don't forget... I DID say the Amaze was the best of the 3... I'm not completely bashing the Amaze. But I do find it kind of funny that most everyone that has went to the S3 from the Amaze can't believe how much of an upgrade it is. The community here is lucky, it doesn't have many devs, but the devs it does have made the phone workable. It's just I feel HTC screwed the pooch with the phone. Lack of support, lack of development support, and lack of QA/QC really didn't take advantage of the HW the phone has.
