So, new to this game, but a reasonably good tech head by trade. I didn't see any information outlining the differences between the available GTab ROMs in an apples to apples sort of way. Does anything like that exist currently? If not, is this something the community would be interested in brainstorming in a Google Doc or something? I'm happy to get things rolling if so.
Okay, so, this might be stupid, or a total waste of time, but what the heck:
https(colon,slash,slash)spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0Au8YYie-Ky7kdDNQRG8zN09xYnQ2NTVvOXY1ZTFtMXc&hl=en&authkey=CJC3j5oC
I went ahead and started working up a spreadsheet. Feel free to go in and start editing, adding important features, correcting, or whatever else. If someone else has beaten me to this, just say so.
I actually think it is an awesome idea and should help a lot of people decide what ROM they want to use. I have had my GTab since Christmas and have flashed mine over 20 times. I have tried all of the ROMs available on these forums multiple times and I don't think I would have needed to if a spreadsheet like this was in place earlier.
Okay, I think I seeded the spreadsheet with as much information as I can based on the various ROM threads. It'll be up to the community to help fill in some of the remaining gaps and such. And feel free to add in new feature checkpoints as well that users would find relevant. I'll keep curating the document to keep it consistent, and will fill in more once I actually have my G-Tablet in hand.
Features, add features that we could us, so those of us who want a rom that performs the tasks we want can see which one best suits us.
just some egs
bluetooth gps support
usb gps support (dont think this will be possible till hc is availabe)
usb g3 support
proxy support
external or bt keyboard and mouse support

Neither stupid nor a waste of time: I have been wanting to do something similar for a while - decide what/whether to upgrade my TNTLite 2.2 install to, I just haven't found the time or energy.
Your spreadsheet is very helpful. You should start a thread for it in the 'G Tablet Android Development' forum and see if you can get it stickied: I'll bet a LOT of other people will find it useful too. Maybe the various developers will chime in and help you fill in the blanks.
*thumbs up!*
I for one thank you for your time and effort. I am waiting on my Gtab to be delivered and am trying to decide which ROM to use. With this spreadsheet I can see the pros/cons of the major players at a glance. I think I will go with Vega.

Tossed some extra fields in for those requests.
999pings, thanks, I'll start a second thread once I have the requisite posts to do so in the Developer forum. I was sort of torn what the right place was to post this to begin with. Mods, feel free to merge the threads if necessary once I get the second one going.
Yeah thanks this would be helpful. It's always easier to have a side-by-side comparison than having to read through a long list of change logs and hundreds of pages of comments on what works and what doesn't. I too am waiting for my tablet to come in the mail and deciding which ROM to go with. I was basing my decision on popularity and that award going to TnT based on thread activity. Of course that doesn't always mean it's the best choice. I'd like to see this spreadsheet take shape in the next few days or so
Perhaps you can model yours after one that SimonNWalker here at XDA did:
http://db.androidspin.com/androidspin_release_matrix.asp
Something along those lines would be nice once I have the data put together from everyone. Likewise, it'd be nice to find a wiki for it to live on, some place that it could continue to be maintained over time. Ideally something like this can take off in a way that it wouldn't need me (or any single person) to constantly curate it.

I don't know much about it, but there is Wiki functionality within XDA if this gains popularity. The spreadsheet/chart can definitely grow over time especially when Honeycomb comes out. There will be many more flavors of ROMs being released.

I was about to embark upon getting VPN access working using TNTLite, now I know that I can switch to Vegan if it gets too complicated.

Thankyou TheQuicksilver!!
Sticky??
I suggest adding a column for stock TNT, and maybe even 1 for stock+enhancement?
That would be helpful for those trying to decide to stay stock or not.

Brand new to the GTab.. Picking a ROM and rooting tonight. This resource helps immensely! Thanks!
Just wanted to say thanks for this. This would be great to have as a "sticky" so we don't have to search for it, and for new owners to see at the top of the page.
hey guys love the forum thank you to all the Devs for there great work
now i must ask i know its been asked before but i never found a clear answer im currenty on bionix v 1.2.1 with the DOW14HD kernel....and i also love to use me vibrant to play games on my LCDTV iwould also like to connect my wiimote as so many already do for there phones is there a way to get bluetooth HID into my phone to do this?
is there a rom for the vibrant that has HID in it i dont know about?
Thanks
anyone....anyone....anyone........ you in the back
There currently isn't a Rom for this phone that has a compatible bluetooth stack other than cyanogen which is unstable. Or at least one that im aware of... There are other devices (zeemote or whatever it is) that work but I personally don't like the look and feel of it...
I will personally go find and post the solution in all of the threads concerning this when I find a reasonable method
hey thanks for the reply.....do you hapen to know if the CM7 scrizz pointed out in q & a forums supports it?

This was asked in that thread...but no one answered. While CM7 seems 'stable enough' there's a series of procedures you need to perform post flash in order to get everything working properly, so it's not recommended if you aren't willing to get a little dirty. I want wiimote functionality real bad as well, but not so bad that I can't wait for CM7 to be 100%
yea thats true im on bionix-v.....we will have to wait and see....guess theresnot enuff mobile gamers to get the wiimote development going.
patiences is a key.......
I'm running Cm7 right now and setup only took 15 mins and its really stable i dont have a wiimote tho so i cant say if it does work or not
see the only thing im worried about with CM7 as of now....is that theres no TV out....thats one of the best features on SGS line.....im ganna wait until thats fixed...but also the BLUETOOTH HID san also be used by a bluetooth keyboard or mouse.....just to try.
agreed agreed
Wii remote does work in CM7, but as mentioned, no video out (or GPS).
Are there any roms that support tv out as well as bluetooth controller support? I haven't noticed any but I don't follow too many of them...
1. How is video acceleration on Honeycomb? I heard either Bos or Illuminate has video acceleration?
2. Best overclocking kernel for beginners. I'm looking for a quick and easy solution to install. Post the best tutorial(s)
3. Does netflix work? If so, post the best tutorial(s)
4. I have a Seagate Freeagent 1.5tb portable hard drive (USB 3.0). Will I be able to hook that up to the tablet and watch my movies/videos on it?
Thanks!
EDIT: I bought it from Tigerdirect.ca for $269 + taxes and it should be here on Monday
*Sigh*
The current honeycomb roms are not recommended for beginners. Right now, only froyo has full hardware acceleration. Nothing else have hardware acceleration. I suggest you start out with froyo first before you take it further.
All honeycomb roms are in their alpha stages and therefore only recommended for testers and experienced users. I swear, if I see another beginner whining about the lack of full functionality on the honeycomb roms...
I'm not complaining. Just inquiring
goodintentions I'm going to borrow your line,
I highly recommend an iPad.
Read, Read, Read!!!!!!
Do your homework before you write the final exam Seriously, I've done more reading on here than I've done modding on my Gtab. There are plenty of sources of good info on here. Don't rush into action before you read the experiences and recommendations of others.
Start with the stock 3588.
Use it for a few days.
Then try Vegan-Tab for a few days.
Then try Vegan Gingerbread RC1
You can also try CM7
If you're happy, dont change.
If you have learned all the nuances, and want to experiment, learn NVFlash and go nuts...
But what about playing videos from the external hard drive mentioned?
To give you an idea of the mentality recently on this site, I'l edit your post title...
"Just bought a G-Tablet, DON'T WANT TO LOOK FOR MY OWN ANSWERS"
Just today, I read a post that spoke ot external harddrives. I haven't personally tried it yet, but someone mentioned that as long as the hard drive works under it's own power (not a flash drive) that it should work. But here's an idea for you, plug it in and try it...see for yourself if it works or not.
to your other questions:
1. How is video acceleration on Honeycomb? I heard either Bos or Illuminate has video acceleration?
On Froyo roms it works fine, Gingerbread roms have a pieced together form of it by overclocking, but there are no Nvidea drivers for Gingerbread. Likewise, there are also no drivers for Honeycomb.
2. Best overclocking kernel for beginners. I'm looking for a quick and easy solution to install. Post the best tutorial(s)
Look for your own tutorials, man. I've been using Calkulin/Clemsyn combo for about a week and love it. (Clemsyn part is the kernel) Really, you'll only find 2 different kernels that are popular. Clemsyn and Pershoot. Both are great
3. Does netflix work? If so, post the best tutorial(s)
Netflix only works 100% on CM7, but tweaking is necessary. Right now, I suggest that you forget about netflix and use the tablet for apps that actually work on it.
to be honest, all of your questions can be answered simply by browsing these forums. Hell, just looking for 10 minutes I can find a post called "Best Roms?" "Fastest most stable roms?" There are many about netflix alone. And It's basic knowledge, from reading, reading, and more reading, that ONLY FROYO ROMS HAVE HARDWARE DRIVERS THAT ENABLE ACCELERATION.
now, start reading...when you think you're done, read some more. When you're done, go to Slatedroid and read some more...and then some more...pretty soon, you'll be an expert!

The deal breaker for me on the HC ROMS so far is that I can't seem to get then to work with any exchange email programs. Having access to my corporate outlook is critical for a daily use ROM. Anyone know how to beat that issue?

1) Only SW acceleration which seems to work OK for up to 480p
2) My opinion Clemsyn for Froyo, Pershoot for Gingerbread
3) It works great with CM7 stable
4) Doubt it since I think Freeagent requires power from the USB port, but try it and let us know. It should not hurt anything.
I tried Vegan Tab 5.1.1, BoS, CM7.0.3, and a bunch of others that did not last long for various reasons. I have completely settled on CM7.0.3 Stable and have a very solid tablet which I have not had to repartition at all (with 5.1.1 I was always having to repartition after crashes). Tried CM7.1 release candidate and it gave me fits with a few things, so I am going to wait to the next RC before I move. I really, really like CM7 and it works with Netflix (need to get the netflix app from here). On CM7, I use MoboPlayer to play movies. It has a setting where you can disable HW acceleration and use SW acceleration. That has worked great for my movies although I do not encode HD, I stay at 480p and thereabouts.

Nah, we're not tough. I've been to tougher forums. At least he got answers to his questions.
BUT, that being said, Kyle is obviously not a master of finding answers for himself. Everytime I ask a question (and I do, trust me) is only after I've read just about every thread I can find that may help me. In other words...if I had a problem with an app not working, first I'd check the Themes and apps section, of THIS forum and Slatedroid. If no answer, then I'll check the thread that specifically deals with the rom I am on, and yes, I'll read every boring page of it. I may even check G-Tablet for Dummies to see if Goodintentions addresses it, or not. THEN, before asking the question ,I'll use this little invention called "Google." You see, "master"kyle, Google is what's called a search engine. If you type words into it, it will give you a list of web pages that might help you with the words you typed.
I have no problem with people that come here with a problem, and tell us that they tried, this, and that, from this thread, or that thread, or that web page, etc...but their problem persists. At least I know that they made the attempt to answer their own questions. But to come here and say that you purchased a device, haven't received it yet, then DEMAND answers to questions in which the answers only require a browsing of the forums (not even a full blown search, just scroll down!!!)
yeah, no patience for those people...they are the ones that really NEED an iPad.
TJ, I intended my post to be facetious. Sorry if that didn't come through. You were all pretty gentle with him - more waterguns than flamethrowers.
Thanks for all of the responses. I am new to this Gtablet forum and I find the information posted about the hardware acceleration is sketchy: BoS or Illuminate roms have said to use hardware acceleration without the proper drivers? Why do you think I asked you all of these questions? I have a freeagent drive and I'm not sure it will work yet since it will be arriving tomorrow. I need to know whether or not to buy a 32gb sd card for the gtablet for some movies. ALL I REALLY WANTED TO KNOW IS WHICH ROM TO STICK WITH ASKING THESE SPECIFIC QUESTIONS. If you cannot understand that, they don't give me some ass-comment "Well you should know and search". If you have a problem with my post, then GTFO. If you wish to help me, then please post a response. I do enjoy some of the posts on this thread. Thanks all

Hi!
I am a NOOB here..(yes my post will prove it) but I know from what I have read online and from other sites that someone here may be able to help me.. I know once this is read someone will want to post"Why didn't you search first?" Well I did and came up with a ton of threads(some relevant and some not but none really were what I am looking for I think) I am constantly travelling with my company and really do not have the time that some here may have to search all the posts for what I am looking for..plus I suffer from severe adhd which unless it is laid out step by step I get distracted and wander..like I am doing now lol... So please be gentle and I hope someone here can find the time to answer my question.. And again thanks
Here goes!!-
Been a lurker for awhile but been away(overseas) came back and had a great deal( I thought) on a viewsonic gtab cross my desk for 125.00...so I took the plunge from casual reading on net that I could root etc.. I have never owned a tablet so this is my first..
HELP ME LOVE MY GTAB!!!
Now I didnt know which subforum this belongs and if the mods have to move it so be it.. but I need help..and this is the help I am looking for-
I hate the tapntap..I want to root but do not know which rom to go with..I game alot and watch videos alot and grooveip alot... I hope that helps people in the suggestions for which rom I should use. I am computer savvy and follow instructions well...so please point me to anything that might help..I of course would love to have the latest (ics) but hear there is some limited functionality..if I am incorrect in this and some of the limitations in gingerbread please feel free to correct me.
I like to tinker...any cool tinkering/hacks I can do to this tab(that wont completely brick it lol) any sites to suggest..sites for people that love their gtab etc
Basically I just want to feel I got a good deal and I want to root but dunno which one to go to..and I want to keep my camera (for now) but if I see I am not using it much I may flash to something else later...but guys give me all your advice on which rom I should go to first that is the most stable and will suit the needs I outlined earlier... thank you for letting me be long winded..
BTW I love the site but feel overwhelmed with this..which is why I posted..so don't hate..appreciate that I look to your knowledge lol
Hi Bro!
Like you I was kind of lose with all this information about Gtab. My poor english made of google translator do not help me. But if you read a lot, perhaps you can reach something.
Did you know that site? http://viewsonic-gtablet-for-dummies.webs.com/
Well, that name isnt encouraging, but you will found good and easy information in this site. You know, easy steps, everything explained. Good to begin with.
Currently I am using this rom :Beasty/Clemsyn Ultimate Froyo Combo - Simply THE BEST (1.2 bootloader only)
Very fast, good for everything and all things are working, I guess.
Well, read a lot, read again and try something. As always, If you brick your gadget, all responsability is your. Let us know if something go wrong. If you reach success, let us know too. Is good substantiate, your problems can help other people in future.
As I already said, sorry for my poor english.
Good luck Dude.
I agree with jonnybr. Beastly-Clemsyn is my favorite rom when it comes to the stability and speed, at least for me, nothing else has matched it. Everything works, camera, hardware accel., even newer versions of most Gapps and most games work with no problem at all. Only exception is that if you use a USB mouse with your tablet, the orientation will be messed up but that's the price you pay for Skype to work.
If you are quite savvy and enjoy tinkering, maybe try a few different roms and see what you like best. Some of the others that are great are FrankenTab, CM7 (runs great but no HW accel.) and of course ICS (no camera yet and still a Beta build), but if you are looking for a working camera, low risk of problems and stability your best bet is to try one of the Froyo roms like Beastly or FrankenTab.
Funny, I started messing around with mine when I first got it to add functionality and make this thing actually useful and enjoyable. Come to find out, I get more use and enjoyment out of tinkering and messing with it than I do actually using it for it's intended purpose!
I have to agree with jonnybr as well. We were all noobies to at one point, but you made a well worth investment on the tablet. This tablet is virtually brick proof with the NVflash method. If it where me I would stick with a 1.2 boot loader, you can get the NVflash file from the link posted by jonnybr. That boot loader is ultimately the best for stability and reliability. Beastly rom is the best for a froyo rom. For visual pleasure I would lean towards VeganTab. Granted HW accel. is not the greatest, its a hacked version, but it is a 2.3 Gingerbread rom. A lot of potential with that particular rom. For me I currently am using DRH ICS since I don't really use my camera for anything special. This thing is more or less my touch screen netbook. Happy hunting.
To give a little background info: I'm complete noob as far as android is concerned and I just bought moto e to get me started with android world.
I don't know about others but I certainly feel overwhelmed by shear magnitude of this world and feel little lost >.>
So, put it in one line, I wold like to get help from experts and maybe other people who also bought this phone or something similar to make my life little easier as going all gung ho in app store doesn't seem like a good approach to me, especially with low bandwidth net I've.
As I mentioned, this is my first Android phone and I would like to know about the ''free'' apps which I should install for following things.
Protection from virus/spyware/theft?
File browser if it can extend the capacity of default browsing system.
Web browser which performs well on low bandwidth but is also decent.
Social networking apps (I've already installed Whatsapp as it was known to even gadget challenged person like me)
Ebook and PDF file reader.
Caller ID and call as well as voice recorder.
Those reviewers were not kidding when they said camera sucked on this phone, so if there any app to make it better/more useful?
App for sketching and drawing.
App for navigation (if there is need)
Small time games like racing and pool/snooker etc. I'm not really a game seaway so things on youtube looked too much for me .-.
Any other useful recommendations are welcome as well.
PS:
I did look for some other thread like this but I didn't find one so forgive me if this doesn't really live up to the forum standards, and feel free to delete/move it, if it doesn't. I apologize in advance.
Cheers!

First of all you are posting in wrong section and Second as you are a newbie try relaxing a bit no one will become Einstein in one day and Thirdly welcome to the android community.
And You just cant ask away everything as this is not a place for app advicing you got playstore for that and free paid apps you know how to get them and dont ask about them as it is not allowed [i personally disagree as its just skipping money from wrong people]
and please use "search" thing before you ask

And You just cant ask away everything as this is not a place for app advicing you got playstore for that and free paid apps you know how to get them and dont ask about them as it is not allowed [i personally disagree as its just skipping money from wrong people]
and please use "search" thing before you ask

Sorry about the section thingy, I saw the ''theme and app'' thing on the section header(?) so thought this would be the right place to go.
About the playstore, I'm browsing it, but its kind of difficult to separate whats useful from what not (being a newbie and all plus slow net kind of makes it difficult to try out everything, sorry if that sounds like an excuse). I guess, I was just looking for people who already use these and suggest the best.
I'm browsing the thread you linked so thank you for that.

Actually, anything that has human factor involved is a security risk, Linux or not. While Android OS itself might be very well secured, what you install on it makes world of difference (hence my reluctance), depending on sources. It is true that I'm noob to android gadgets, I'm very well familiar with Linux as that is what I use more than 90% of the time. On the Linux forum I'm frequent at, this topic usually causes ton of debate and after few good points it end with exactly what you said, so I wont fan that fire.lol Just wanted to know if there is one. And by the way, Virus=/=malware, virus is just one of the many forms of Malware. And even Linux is not ''that'' secure/immune from latter, its just less of a riped fruit to pluck, something contrary to its child; Android and hence the question.
When I said making cam better/more useful, it was more aimed at making its stock camera UI/app (w/e you may call it) a little more useful by adding more quality/functions or simply make came more easier to use with different UI, this has no bearings on camera hardware in question. I do apologize for wording this wrong in initial post though.
I'll install all your other suggestions, thank you very much for your patience. I appreciate it!

The only way you can be affected by a malware is if you install an infected/malicious app. If you stick with Play Store, the chances for that are minimal. Do not download apps from anywhere else and let Google verify it for you. Still if you're concerned there are plenty of antivirus apps on Play Store, use search button.
Also, try and read the description of an app before you install, see if it has the features you need. The ratings and reviews also help. Thats how learned it when I bought my first Android.
As for the camera UI, trust me, this is one of the best camera apps amongst stock ones. Its clean, simple and efficient. Still, if you wish to check some more, there are plenty on play store. You can try those. Camera 360, Perfectly Clear, for example. They will change the UI and have some cool after effects to apply.
@.glen First and foremost a warm welcome to the Droidland...
Antivirus> Not required at all/Avast
File Browser> ES File Explorer/Astro File Manager
Web Browser on low b/w> Opera Mini/UCBrowser
Video player> MX Player
These are the only apps available for your purpose and free...
No app will make your camera better...
Also try Nova Launcher...
Games> Angry Birds, Temple Run2, Subway Surfers, Jetpack Joyride, SSG2, Hill Climb Racing, Into The Dead, Cut The Rope2 to name a few...
Btw don't worry, we all were n00b at first...
But don't get overwhelmed, we're happy to help...
BTW, don't forget to click the Thanks button below my post if I helped ya... :good:

Welcome to the fabulous world of android!:highfive:
I've compiled a list of apps along with their respective play store links. I hope you'd find them useful.
My two cents worth:-
File browser: I use CyanogenMod File Manager. Root Explorer(Paid), ES File Explorer, etc are decent options.
Web browser: Dolphin Browser-It supports flash. If you want to conserve data you might look into Opera Mini
Ebook and PDF file reader: Moon Plus Reader-IMHO this is the best app for this purpose. Free and Paid options are available
Communication: Viber is a good option. I prefer it over LINE,WE chat, etc
Some other apps I think you should have:-
For optimizing RAM usage/hibernating apps: Greenify
Ad-blocking: AdblockPlus or Adaway(needs root). For more info, look here.
Launcher: Nova Launcher
Media Player: MX Player-a must have!
App Backup:TitaniumBackup(needs root) or Helium
Thank you all! I've taken most of the suggestions and it has indeed made my life easier :3
