Ive managed to run Ubuntu Netbook Remix on the A101 in SDE.
By run i mean i see GDM, because the driver for the touchscreen seems not to be working.
What ive did was, i took an image from here: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-netbook/ports/releases/10.10/release/ and copied everything from the data partition to a new .img file. Also ive copied the modules from the angstrom rootfs.img.
Then just copied over my rootfs.img over the angstrom one and booted.
There seems to be lots of issues, mainly, i guess, because the init script in the initrd should do something, the one from angstrom doesnt.
Also the kernel-log says it cant read the /proc/ filesystem.
I uploaded my rootfs img to rapidshare for you to try for yourselfes, maybe someone can pick up from here and build a really working kernel+initramfs.

Yes, but as i could not login,i havent seen if the windowmanager works correctly.

Kudos! - You could just try to plug in a usb mouse/keyboard into the usb port - it's usb host (mouse and keyboard work in android)
I'd love to see some more action with this. A mouse+keyboard should at elast get you access to the desktop and thus, terminal. From there, enabling the touch screen should be within arms reach.
To experiment for myself, could you write together a fool proof (noob proof) guide to get to where you're at?

i tried that, but it did not work. But that might be because the only Device i have here to test is some wireless usb mouse, which might need some other drivers.
Im currently working on an image with the xserver-xorg-input-evtouch driver built-in. I hope that gets the touchscreen working in X11.
To get started:
Get some Ubuntu.
Install rootstock using: sudo apt-get install rootstock.
Run rootstock:
sudo rootstock --fqdn archos-ubuntu --login ubuntu --password ubuntu --keepimage --imagesize 2G --seed ubuntu-netbook
That one generates an .img file you can copy over your existing rootfs.img.

i had to ctrl+c, because i tas going no where for about an hour.

I had that problem too once.. Just trying again might work rootstock seems to be a bit buggy.
A little update: usb-mice work, when the modules are copied in /lib/modules in the image, but only when no computer is connected on the mini-usb port, that was the problem in the first place.
Wlan driver extracted from stock archos android can be loaded too, but i didnt manage to get the firmware to load yet.

Good God, how awesome it'd be to have a USEABLE distro of linux on the 101 or 70. I love using linux (i have linux mint installed on all 3 computers in my home) and it'd be excellent if i could install an embedded version on my tablet, but alas, i'm a plumber not a programmer! So if someone could post a few links or tutorials to get us started ( as i'm sure there are plenty of gen 8 owners who feel the same as me ) it'd be much appreciated.
Q. Does the 101 it have the same hardware components as the 5 it? The reason i ask is that i think there is a working version of ubuntu nbr for this device and im pretty sure it has the same processor as the gen 8 tablets ( cortex arm a8 ).
Q. Would an amature linux geek like me have any hope of porting it over to our device?
Q. Would it work natively or would we need to modify it?
If anyone else has an interest in having ubuntu on their tablet please post as we have to get this bumped up the list of to do's. BTW, thanks to all you guys in advance and best of luck.

that's only running via vnc - that means no drivers for display and touchscreen and unfortunately won't get us much further
yes it's just a chroot so you can imagine as a ubuntu running with the android kernel. you could try mux the drivers from the angström to the ubuntu kernel and compile the kernel for arm processors this could work, at least integrating ev-touch will help a lot. search for google for ubuntu4arm and you will find some howto.
the reason why i'm outta this is i have not much time at the moment and without a usable on-screen-keyboard (and at the moment there is none) ubuntu is worthless for me on the tablet.
Why o why have there been so few posts on this subject? Are we the only one's interested or is it just too much work to get another version of linux on the gen 8 devices? Really not trying to be rude to any of the developers on xda because i think you guys are awesome, really, but could someone please tell us if this is a worthwhile cause or a pure waste of time and effort.
Ok, sorry ahead of time for the n00b question, but I cannot get my archos a70 to show up when I query ./adb devices on my Mac. I tried to update the .ini using echo "0x0e79" >> ~/.android/adb_usb.ini like Archos says, and I currently have SDE (Angstrom) on the device. Running the device in USB Debug as well. Is there some really basic step I am missing?
Well, managed to get the initramfs from $aur0n and the zImage from ardatdat working on the dev edition. Still can't launch ./adb shell though, so I haven't been able to partition my external sd card and relocate the dev edition to there...
Please, anyone, help. I'm dying here.

just reread all the rooting posts and realized that I'm doing the partition wrong and don't need to be in adb to partition.
i am currently mounting the external sd via the Archos since i don't have an SDreader. trying to use this post, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10324687&postcount=89, in order to partition, but can't seem to be able to figure out how to do it in terminal.
man, i'm such a noob. perhaps i should have waited til a better, Mac oriented guide was posted....

I'm having a hard time getting ./adb devices to recognize that i have the archos plugged in.
I also am unable to perform the fdisk -l, and am confused about the entire partitioning process to be honest. if you are able to do it successfully, i'd really love to know how you did the very basic stuff they leave out of the original thread.

I am simply trying to modInstallLocation using adb to gain a little more space using my windows 7(64 bit) computer. I have the latest android sdk installed and it all works fine with my htc desire. However i am unable to get my archos 70 to show up as a connected device using the driver from the archos site.
I know how to modify the ini file but am unsure where abouts in the file to insert the modification.

I am new to the boards as a poster, i've been reading for a while now and I must thank everyone especially in the development section of the forum for their incredible amount of help and expertise.
It has officially come time for my first noob question-
Can anyone help me out or lead me to a guide perhaps that will allow me to use OpenOffice on my webtop? This is really what I bought the lapdock for-it just came in yesterday.
I managed to get webtop2sd working on my own, lxterminal is functional. That's all I've got so far in fear of ruining anything else.
I'm not at all well-versed in any linux script or anything of the sort. I know windows like the back of my hand.. just so happens that my windows PC totally bit the dust(motherboard) last night and I'm forced into learning this stuff a little quicker. Why not, right?
I have done some searching, all of it leads me to a bunch of lingo and commands I don't understand yet. If anyone can point me in the direction of some help or provide me with a little one-on-one that would be awesome. I'm looking forward to helping others with these kinds of issues down the road.

Assuming you have webtop2sd and the linux addon installed properly
(with the linux image on your external SD), do the following:
1) Click the Penguin. You will get a window that says it has found an image in you external SD card.
2) Simply press "okay" on that window.
3) Once it shows the Pdmenu, select DebianMenus>Applications>Shells>Bash. it will bring up an xterm script which reads "[email protected]:/#"
4) To get open office, you must type "apt-get install openoffice.org" without the quotes.
5) Agree to install/update, and it will read "[email protected]:/#" once it is done.
6) At this point, and from now on, you can do steps 1-3 and simply type "openoffice.org" into xterm. It will take a second, but it will load a fully functional OpenOffice.
Basically you just need to know the package names to use this same structure for other programs. I use "openoffice.org", "iceweasel" (a firefox alternative, since my firefox keeps breaking), and "geany" (a C++ IDE for my programming classes). These are installed using "apt-get install packagename" and run using "packagename" in the bash script as well.

I didn't want to be that guy posting 95823094820394 threads about the same thing so I just figured I'd bump the one i created with some explanation:
I have webtop2sd properly(i believe, anyway) installed. LXterminal is functional. I also have linuxdisk in sdcard(-ext)/WebTopMOD . I'm not sure what to do from here. the help given above gave instructions to click the penguin while in webtop and run certain commands, but the penguin only brings up the webtop configurator. i have no other icons to click.
My goal, again, is just to get open office running on my webtop, for now. That's really it, the rest i'm sure will come with time. Thank you again for any help.
I seem to have figured it out for the most part using Alex's guide. However, the installation threw a couple errors, couldn't really tell you what they were because they were epic and I'm clueless as far as linux for the time being. However, my educated guess and deduction points towards insufficient memory. I set up my webtop partition to be 1GB, because I'm using a 16GB sd card that's virtually full of music. Is 1GB skimping it if I want to install openoffice/other linux packages? What size partition is recommended?

4GB is recommended, though I would think based on the package sizes that openoffice.org would squeeze into a 1gb partition. With this phone I would definitely recommend an external SD. My 32GB holds my webtopmod, music, and every hack, mod, bootanimation, theme, kernel, radio, and zip I've ever flashed. Do it.
Also openoffice worked, But i think it dosent match the atrix ubuntu core perfectly.
An error name:"openoffice Writer2laterx dose not configured" happened again and again.

i am using an external SD, a 16 GB one. i'm about to make a 4GB partition and start from scratch. eventually, i'm picking up a 32 no doubt.
After making a full re-installation of everything I can't get open office to install? I tried both via terminal and Synaptic both fail with error messages.
"dpkg error processing tzdata" Error code (1) error in package
Any ideas?

Cant open files from sdcard
Hello, I finally got openoffice installed, but I dont know how I can open files located in my sdcard. Can anyone please help me with this?

And they aren't interested in removing the ability to root for those who want to do that. I was pleasantly surprised how ok they are with rooting. Plus, he said they have to keep the boot from SD option. When someone brings a messed up device into a B&N store, they can wipe the device clean and restore it to its original condition by booting the system from an SD card (by using the OS on the card to restore the system on the device).

Perhaps wishful thinking on my part, but I thought I could take a bootable CM7 uSD from my NC and put it in the NT. No dice. It just boots up into the Nook OS. The same card works on my NC.
yeah i tested it out myself today with no luck. when i get mine i'm gonna try an install just to see what happens. maybe you need to run the installer on the device you want? i know that doesn't make sense but i'll have mine tomorrow so if it works i'll post back here. but the boot from sd was invaluable when i deleted the boot file on my nc. and i've seen people get sold on the tablet based on how easy the nc was to root and tinker with. but the stock experience is nice enough that i won't NEED to root it right away.

Unfortunately it wouldn't even run the installer. I created a fresh bootable uSD using the image from here:

Then dumped the latest CM7 NC nightly on it, put it in the NT, and turned it on. The NT just went straight into the Nook OS.
Just to make sure nothing was wrong with it, I put it in my NC. The installer started up, CM7 installed, and after a reboot I was in a fresh install of CM7. Next I took the uSD, put it in the NT, and restarted it. Still didn't work.

This method can't simple directly used with NT, we need edit something like autonooter or supernooter to work with the new hardware.

This won't work because each version of CM is tailored to work for the specific device in question, based on the hardware that device has. The NC does not have the same hardware as the NT, therefore you can't use the version of CM built for the NC on the NT. CM has drivers built-in in order to communicate with the device in question, and the drivers for communication with the NC cannot be used to communicate with dissimilar hardware on the NT.
We will just have to wait until the CM devs rebuild CM to include the drivers for the NT.

+1. They've bought my loyalty. The NT also just shot straight to the top of my Christmas list as a result of this.
I just got ahold of my Nook Tablet today. I can't wait until the developers get going on this. I definitely will still support B & N for allowing this to be done.
Honestly, B&N is way better off letting users hack away at it. It makes it a hot sales item, resulting in free advertising and better company image (good for shareholder confidence). Also, hopefully they learned from Sony on how NOT to provide an "open" system--giving freedom then taking it away.
It appears that it may only boot signed code..
also, I'm not able to open build.prop on the device using a file manager or when I transfer it to my local machine..
Hopefully some devs will pick it up soon and let us know where we stand

it don't work.
Don't panic people. Just because a bootable card does not boot up the Tablet does not mean it will not boot from a card. A whole new CWR will need to be created for the tablet.
Even without root right now, most everything is available.
Obviously we are still missing the android market, but almost all other gapps are currently working, home replacements as well.
I know this doesn't work as well as CM, but it is definitely a huge improvement over what we had yesterday morning.

The problem with your quoted text: There's a difference between "booting from SD" and "booting ANYTHING from SD".
B&N can allow the former in order to permit unbricks at the store (signed B&N images) without allowing the latter (unsigned images).

hello. I think that the NT might boot from SD but is not seeing the right MLO file on the card. If I remember from the OMAP 3 boot sequence, the MLO has to be put on the sdcard first. The reason is that the MLO is the very low level boot code that get into the internal SRAM of the chip. TI provided a tool to convert the xft image to an MLO file and added some kind of magic number so that the chip accepted it as valid for execution. You do not want to use the NC MLO on a NT. that might kill the OMAP. The first thing to do is get the OMAP4 XFT source code and covert it to an MLO using the OMAP 4 TOOL and put it on an sdcard on the first sector to see if the NT will take it.

I thought they did, there is a link in the NT developer forum I believe.
I really like the B&N stock reader and library. I know right now CM7 is only internal and bootable SD cards will come later. So the question is if we can make and SD card to run CM7 can't we do the same thing to the stock ROM? I'd rather run CM7 internal and use my tablet as a tablet and then when I want to use it as a Nook pop in a stock ROM SD and read.
Not yet but soon is what Celtic said, they are looking into it.

I know they said they were working on a bootable CM7 from a SD Card and you could pick to boot either stock or CM7. And by all means I am not a programmer or even try to pretend to be but couldnt you take the stock ROM and make an image on an SD and just have it boot that as the operating system?
basically yes but other files are needed in order to do so, Adam found a way and got ubuntu booting from sd, but i think noone has tried to replace those images with stock, it is not that simple though. But if you want to get adventurious try it out and let us know .

Point me in the right direction of where to even start and I'll give it a go. Like I said not a programmer or anything just computer savoy and learn quickly.
Unfortunately is a bit complex and takes some work to create, you will need a linux distro like Ubuntu too. Its kind of long to explain right now but tell you what i'll look into it myself i have the tools set already but i dont promise anything. This kind of projects is fun for me so i'll take it like that.

UPDATE: ok i did my tests and first let me explain how i had my sdcard setup:
boot 50mb FAT32 primary partition ACTIVE
system 600mb ext4 primary
data 1.35gb ext4 logical
so obviously on windows only the first partition 50mb will be seen then i placed the files:
boot.img
flashing_boot.img
MLO
u-boot.ini
The above are the necessary files for sdcard to boot into the "boot.img" we put it, apart of the previously important step of make the boot partition ACTIVE.
Now i have played with the boot.img files i have but first i made sure my NT could boot from sdcard by placing the boot.img containing CWM posted by Goncezilla and it worked so i proceed.
* First time i placed the boot.img from the AdamOutler's acclaim_update.zip with no go it booted straight to CM7 (current flashed ROM)
* Second try i placed the boot.img from one of my clean stock backups it booted but all i got was the box with the white background, stayed there for a minute or so and then rebooted, black N screen then the box again (bootloop). Turned off.
That is all my test so far, is bed time now. Nite

PS: what im trying to show is that we need a modified boot image capable to boot fine and read the other partitions that have been set.Im not a dev but i use my logic, please correct me if im wrong.

UPDATE: After search in development forum for tools and guides to work with a boot image for the nook tablet (as i found out the guide i made long time ago won't apply for this device as it is totally different) i have found a thread created by AdamOutler here where he post a "tool", an image to create a bootable sdcard with the basics, he also state you can create your own custom sdcard but for that you need to have some knowledge with Linux-Ubuntu in this case.
Problem: Wifi does not work but i think if a dev would be interested i think this could be worked out and solved.
For now i can't even try this with modifications for my own because i dont have yet a higher size/class sdcard as i use my internal sd partitioned to 11GB and i stream/ftp the rest of my media/files so ...

Maybe post your progress in the Dev forum since it is relevant to that forum now and see if you can get some help with the wifi Awesome job in such short time!
I looked into that the other day as well, however, unfortunately, Adam's link is dead. Perhaps he could rehost it somewhere. Or if someone else has a copy that could make it available.
I posted on his thread requesting for a new link, i think i will make a new thread as a call to devs to help us with this (if any interested )
