Where you are traveling, will you have regular access to WiFi?
Unless the location that you are staying at has WiFi, or you have a hotspot device or your phone can wirelessly tether, then the Prime might not be the best solution to fit your needs.
If you know you will have a solid connection to the internet that you can share with your tablet, then go for it. It is overall a great device. When I went on vacation a couple of months ago, I loaded up my SD card with movies and shows and the Prime (plus the keyboard dock) were the perfect portable system to watch them on.

Heres my story with the prime!!

Hello guys and gals....I thought i would post this up since not too many people currently have a transformer and there is alot of people who are curious about the transformer prime so i thought i would give my take on the matter!!
First off let me start by saying the prime is my first android tablet. Im a very tech savvy person been taking things apart and fixing things for as long as i can remember. My first smartphone was the palm pre, followed by the samsung moment while i waited for my evo 4g...then i got the evo 3d using sprint premier customer pre purchase. Anyways back on topic..
I was looking for an android tablet for a bit and i was sold on the gtab 10.1 I liked this tablet because of thinness and style..Plus its a pretty nice tablet. However i did not like no option of expandable memory but i was going to deal with it because i wanted a tab, and i was sure that was the tab i was going to get.
Then i heard about the transformer prime and instantly knew what was going to happen with my tablet situation.. Lets compare
samsung gtab 10.1 499.99 16gb
asus prime 10.1 499.99 32gb
as you can already see just by data storage alone the transformer wins, then add in the super IPS+ display, tegra 3 quad core, better battery life, quicker charging, expandable memory, micro hdmi out, dock attachment option, 8MP hd cam with Flash.
Im sure there is more that i am forgetting but that is besides the point. As you can see the prime has alot going for its pricepoint... If you are on the fence about getting a tfp just think about what i posted...For the same price your getting a much better tablet even if only half of what i posted up there was true..
My device is built well cant comment on the wifi since i keep it tethered to my evo3d (my 4g is faster than internet at my parents house) Also seems like gps doesnt work that well hopefully gets fixed in a later firmware update but that doesnt bother me as i have my phone for fast gps anyways.
Overall i am very happy with my purchase and im glad i didnt jump on the gtab so quickly, Any questions just ask i will try to asnwer them as best as i can.. Thats all for now folks
Nice to see another satisfied customer. Have fun with it, it's an awesome device
Thanks for the honest review. glad to see you're happy with your device.
wait.. you mean you don't use your 10.1 inch tablet as a primary GPS unit while driving around?

You mean you'll put people down who want to use the device however they feel but can't because of a design flaw just so you can feel good about your purchase?
::tardcasm::
btw: here's just a couple examples of using a 10" tab in a car:

Again, you pay for a product it should be 100% working as advertised, not have glaring problems ignored just because you want to like the product and are to lazy to do anything about it.

[Q] Best Android Tablet on the Market

Here is my question, I'm looking for a really good tablet with great battery life and I wanted to get the Vibrant community's opinion as to which is the best.
Please refrain from posting about apple products I simply do not like apple as a company and refuse to give them my business.
I would appreciate it if in addition to your selection you could tell me your reason for feeling why its the best.
- Cheers
I picked up an Asus Transformer (OG-not the Prime) a few weeks ago at Best Buy for $399 (Bob Shute almost convinced me to get the Nook Color though). It was the 32gb on sale for the same price as the 16gb (so why not) + it has external, so i have 64+/-gb of storage. I had lurked in a bunch of forums checking out support, ROMs, rootable, "official" ICS and general attitude of the forum members.
When I got it out of the box it was running 3.1 and I had known that it had an OTA update waiting. Within 30mins of getting it, I had upgraded, Rooted and was on my way to being a tablet owner. It was real easy to do too. The battery life on 3.2.1 was really good. Granted I am not using it all day long but I was getting about 2-4 days out of it. Kids would play games, watch Netflix, I would surf and my wife would do her coupon spreadsheets (yes she is one of those ladies and we do have a stockpile).
Fast forward to the ICS update. We got the OTA update and for some reason there is an issue with the kernel and people are getting random reboots. I am not sure if it is just me knowing what I am doing from so many tweaks with this phone and past ones or I just got a good tablet, but I messed with the governors and it has been 3 weeks since upgrade and I haven't had one yet. Knowledge is Power. Felt you should be aware of that though. Battery life on ICS is outstanding. I get 4-6 days out of it easily. Might cut it down now that baseball spring training has started and I can stream live video to it.
Conclusion- A few things. The Transformer (tf101) is just as good as the Prime (tf201) and actually I think it is better b/c the Prime has wifi, GPS and other hardward issues, but its bootloader can be unlocked whereas the tf101 is still lock for now. Another things is that you have to remember that these are seconday devices to most people and some of the redundant questions you see are rediculous.
My suggestion is to lurk in the Acer, Transformer, Galaxy, Xoom forums and see what is going on in them. Plus there are a bunch of smaller tablets coming out soon with Tegra3, Quad-core, low price,...
HTH and let me know if you have any Q's and sorry for the long post.
what do you want to do with this tablet?
I know you said not to mention any apple products but...
seriously dude even the iPad 2 is better than any android tablet out right now. iPad (third generation) just killed everything else. I know you don't like apple as a company but the iPad is pretty much the tablet market, the only tablet one should be getting. You're going to regret it if you don't get an iPad...

Ill be using the tablet for school mostly. Ill have about 100 lbs of books that id rather not have to carry with me everywhere. Ill also be using the tablet for light gaming just to keep me entertained from time to time as well as serving to replace my laptop for day to day tasks. Granted i know not everything can be accomplished by a tablet so ill still have my laptop at my apartment but need something light and portable but capable so i was thinking tablet.
As far as no apple products, they seem to hate me, i touch one and they seem to break they dont function properly and im honestly not convinced that they are the best product on the market. Their Marketing department tries to convince you of that but i hardly agree. (i wont get into it i don't want this to turn into a flame thread) regardless thank you for your input.
Ive been looking alot at the Transformer and TF Prime as well as the 10.1 inch samsung variants, but since i have ICS running on my Vibrant id very much like to have it running on my Tablet, i intend to run stock for a while until stable versions of either CM9 or AOKP are released for the device since i will be using it in a more productive than leisurely role.
@ woodrube thank you for the length of your post i appreciate the time you put into your response
@junglerumble thank you for your input, tho i whole heartily disagree with you (to each their own)
does anybody have an idea of the android tablets that are coming out in the first half of this year and when? I want to get a tablet but not at the moment. I'm waiting till more tablets come out to make up my mind but it would be nice to have some foresight.

Transformers have the keyboard dock too with independent battery in case you want that laptop thing going on. I love my TF and am happy I bought it. There are a couple of us who have the TFs like Alex9090, Mveksler, Gorealmighty and Manus I think.
I would wait til the Asus 3 comes out tegra 3 for the price of the og transformer

I used several different Android Honeycomb tablets, but gave up on all of them because I felt the software weren't advance enough for my purposes, so I got a Windows tablet instead. Then sold that and got the Galaxy Note (international version) which I think is the best consumer portable device made so far, since it acts as a phone and tablet, has the same resolution as the tablets (1280x800, and is even (much) faster than Tegra2, yet pocketable, has Wacom pen, can make phone calls and ultra fast GPS locking, awesome camera), although I didn't keep it since it doesn't support T-Mobile 3G.
Out of the Honeycomb tablets, I liked the Acer A500 and Toshiba Thrive most since it has fullsize USB connector, which works with flash drive and gamepads. I think the Asus Slider should be better since it has fullsize USB and keyboard as well, just a bit heavier. I do not feel tablets with Tegra2 is fast enough to handle 'higher' bitrates HD contents and MKV videos, although other purposes are fine, regular HD video should be okay. I also feel all Android tablets are overpriced for their present software features, unless at refurb price, if it were Ubuntu or some full fledged linux distro I'd be more interested. Which is why I think Windows 8 tablets will have some success, even though I'm not interested in Windows 8.
+1 OG Transformer. Great device

I want to thank everyone for their responses, after spending some time playing with the devices in store and reading through the developer forums I have decided on getting the TF prime, just seemed to blow everything else outta the water once all the tablets had 100+ apps installed and running live wall papers. Luckily i was able to find one at a local retailer since everywhere else was sold out.
I was so close (money in hand) to buying the Galaxy 10.1 but after reading this I decided on the TF201.
Darn near ever place Ive looked is out of stock though.
addition:
It didn't take much for me to switch. After this phone and its total lack of support, I try to stay clear of anything that has Samsung on it.
Thus far I have to say that my impressions of the tfp are extremely favorable so far I have experienced none of the recorded issues with the tablet save maybe the GPS but I have yet to test it outdoors the stock ics keyboard is far better than I expected on the tablet
I will update more as I have more time and experience with the tablet if so desired

I saw that due to the GPS issues they no longer advertise the tab has a GPS. Imagine if Samsung was forced to do the same for our phone's crummy GPS.
Id expect similar GPS to our phones. I ended up buying a real nice Tom-Tom GPS for my car so the phone GPS is bout always off now.

If and when it comes time to Root your device (I did it within 30mins of having it) You can use ViperMod and install Supercurio's OTA Rootkeeper and any updates you get, just open the Rootkeeper up and restore root. Handy little app if I do say so.
I recently purchased a Transformer Prime with the keyboard doc and I have no regrets. It's awsome. I've not experienced any of the GPS/hardware issues mentioned either.

Shall i buy a Transformer Prime for University

Good evenig guys i have the following question. I started studying now and i want to have a tablet for it . Now i have seen the transformer Prime and i like it very much but i also ready the GPS and Wifi issues. To be honest, i'll will never use my Prime for Navigation, i have my Samsung Galaxy S2 for this so i dont give a f*uck for GPS. The only Problem for me is Wifi. Are the newer ones now without Wifi problems because a Tablet without working Wifi would sucks realy hard.
I can chose between the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 N and the Prime and i realy would like to chose the Prime

Sorry, and i don't mean this in a bad way, but like you said you really would like to choose the Prime...then what's really the point of this thread?
There are so many comparison threads out there...just look.
My only suggestion, is to just wait for the Infinity.
The thing is that i don't want to have an tablet with Wifi problems, i want a tablet that works fine without hours of troubleshooting. Why shall i wait for the infinity ? Is it so much better ?

As of newer primes i dont think there is much problem with wifi...then again it is all luck as i can gather from reading in the forums...even if you dont care for gps there is a gps dongle provided by asus with the prime...
As far as Infinity goes...it is still not out so who knows what the device would be like...and i guess it ll be a bit expensive than prime owing to improved screen pixel density and other stuff...there is always a chance that devices so complex would not be at par with high expectations we hold...(tf201 and ipad3 for example)
and apart from that i can feel your itch to buy this beauty...
yeah its is realy a beauty. Like i said if Wifi works fully then i would buy it in an instant. But now i have to read like 10000000 to see what i do
WiFi works...its just not as strong as it should be. If you didn't know, it is due to the metal framing.
and if you say not as strong as it should be you mean like what ?....
70 % from 100 ?

Can't really give you an exact number...but here's an example: my ps3 shows 80% connection strength, my laptop shows maybe about the same, but my Prime would only show about 30%. And my router is located downstairs.
Hi there,
Let me tell you something... this is the best android tablet, period.
the new ipad is also a good choice but take this example: right now I'm playing Super mario 64 in my prime using a xbox 360 controller. Yesterday I was watching a movie using the tablet and my 1 tb WD passport. This tablet lets you do stuff you can't with other devices... so is your decision.
good luck!
just read the positive transformer thread in my signature and then buy a prime..lmfao
My prime's Wifi works okay, it always has a weaker connection than other devices such as my iPod Touch and Laptop, but its not very noticeable.
From experience using it at my university which is known for having a terrible wireless network that gets really slow and can be very hard to connect to, I've had no more trouble connecting to the wireless network with my Prime than my other devices. Before the semester started I was really worried (after reading all the posts about wifi) about not being able to connect to the wireless network but its been working fine all semester.
Not on a single occasion have I ever seen my TFP not have a connection when my Galaxy Nexus did, so I sometimes wonder how often the wifi issues actually manifest in normal settings--and I work all over my Uni's campus and never had any problems.
That said though, make sure you know what you're getting into if you're going to use the TFP as a laptop replacement. It can't do many of the things that students in technical/scientific fields will need to do, and of the things it can do, it does a pretty bad job at many (web browsing is painfully slow if you need to do any sort of research--almost always slower than my Galaxy Nexus, and spreadsheets/presentations are gimped out to the point where they're useless in many applications). It doesn't play particularly well with eLearning either.
There are really no problems with wifi performance...it is a subjective matter...if anyway you want to use wifi in places with awfully bleak signal...i suggest you get this modem with loads of feature one useful thing being able to act as universal repeater to boost wifi signal...if you are unsatisfied with performance which i dont think you will be...

The prime can do a lot... You probably won't be making power points and multitasking could be annoying if you constantly have to switch between two things. For the same price you could build a fairly decent linux box.

Frankly, most campuses have wifi coverage over the entire campus. I know Notre Dame has wifi coverage even on all of their lawns that students lay on. I have never experienced poor enough wifi reception where it became an issue, and the issue you'll run in to far more often (whenever you're on campus) is that the bandwidth that's being sucked up by everyone will slow the internet down more than a poor wifi connection ever will.
That being said, I use my Prime to read all but one of my textbooks on. If you plan to take this much cheaper route, then I would wait for the Infinity. It is completely inarguable that a higher resolution screen wouldn't be better for reading, especially if you're going to be doing extended session of reading like you would for school.

Does the WiFi RMA fix from ASUS work?

Honestly I was thinking of selling my TF201 and getting an iPad.....
Please don't stone me.
However after watching Google IO and all the new features for Android and Google Play I felt the strong desire to get a Nexus 7. Then after thinking about it, the only real problem I have with my Prime is the weak WiFi signal.
Did anyone send theirs in to get fixed from Asus? Did it help a lot or is it barely noticeable?
The weak wifi signal is because of the aluminum casing, they tried to boos the signal with ?software updates?
However I only use mine in my apartment, and I have pretty good reception. Running a TPtest from it was we speak and i get about 14/10 mbit
iPad is a sweet tablet, but there are many function you will lose with iOS.
priceless
Have you considered the TF300T. I bought two: one for my son and mother. They have much better wifi and not to mention smoking GPS. I didn't see much difference in performance.
Honestly, I can't see anyone going from the Prime to iPad and being happy. The iPad is just too restrictive after experiencing openness. My husband has an iPhone and an iPad. Whenever he has to do anything other than surf the web or read ibooks, we use the Prime. When we needed navigation through NYC -- the Prime. Printing theater tickets, Prime again. When the Netflix app on our TV went out, we streamed Netflix from the Prime via HDMI.
I use my tablet at work to share notes or whiteboard drawings through a video projector. I can't count the number of times I've heard iPad owners say "Your tablet is awesome!" Priceless.

I would not expect any improvement in Wifi with an RMA unless it was really non-functional in the 1st place. They may replace the connecter pads and make adjustments based what others have reported, but the consensus is that there is not much of an improvement.
It is what it is......

There is no fix from Asus. Opening up your tablet, playing around with the internal components, slapping it back together with or without testing isn't a fix.
Thanks for the replies! I have decided I am not getting a iPad...must have been having a brain aneurism or something.
However I am considering selling it an getting either the TF300 or a Nexus7. Wifi just sucks too much...
I am also getting all sorts of random reboots, however I am on AOKP so that may be why.
This worked for me...

Prime-Nexus 7

I really enjoy my Prime but the Wifi issues are making it almost impossible to use.
My connection becomes sluggish when I leave the room my router is in. My phone and laptop work fine as far as outside but not my prime. I am tempted to do an even trade for my Prime to get a nexus and then sell my laptop dock for 50$ but hate to lose the 3 inches(I guess its a man thing).
I guess I need some thoughts from my fellow forum members since most of my friends would be clueless on the subject.
I mainly use the tablet for Netflix/Plex, browsing the internet, ebooks, and work mail/productivity. I do plan to get a surface for work which would cut back on what I use my android tablet for.
Wow dude that is a lot of rambling!
If the Prime doesn't meet your needs. Sell it or return it.
I wouldn't do an even swap for a Nexus 7, simply because the Prime is still selling above $400 on eBay right now. Sell it on eBay, sell the dock (You should get $100 for the dock, easy!) and then take that ~$500 and buy a Nexus 7 and some beer.
Honestly I like my Prime and it works well for me. But if you aren't having the same experience do what you gotta do in order to get a device you really like.
I think you need to sell them outright. I just got 600 for a nice prime and dock setup that I traded for. Trading them even would definitely be the short end of the stick as far as your concerned in my opinion.
The nexus 7 is a couple hundred bucks, I would probably hold off on selling if you can, get the nexus 7 and then sell the prime if you don't need it.
I plan to get a nexus 7 to play with and do some development on but the prime will most definitely be my primary tablet and what I enjoy tweaking and modding the most.
If the wifi is your only issue, I would get a wifi network range extender like the Linksys 1000, it would be real inexpensive if you ordered it online and would provide the solution to your wifi troubles.
The linksys I suggested because it will do an automatic configuration when you connect it, and will pick up the wifi network you currently have and use the same network ID and password so once you move it to where you need it and plug it in, your devices wont even know the difference and there's no more setup after that. We have a large weird shaped house where the girlfriend and I spend a lot of time, and I put the Linksys n1000 right at the edge of our master suite so I get full signal in our bedroom and in the backyard/patio.
I'm in the same boat. I do not really like how often applications (specifically the browser) freezes, then asks to close it. It gets really annoying. At the moment, I have a pre-order in for the Nexus 7 from Staples, and if I don't like it, I'll return it and keep my Prime. However, having a Nexus to toy with would be awesome.
I have high hopes for the performance the Prime will have when updated to JB with project butter, but then again I had the same expectation before the ICS update (which did help, but the freezing is till a big problem for me).

If you have a Gold dock I would be willing to buy it. but this is a question I have pondered over quite a bit too. The only thing that really holds me back from the nexus 7 is the storage and the fact I dont really have a google house which is what its optimised for. But for eBooks, web browsing and Netflix I think the 7 would be as good if not almost better than the prime.
