Slow data on CM7? - HTC Aria Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just flashed CM7, and after installing a few apps again (a fresh clean install, finally!) I thought I test my speeds, because the Market seemed sluggish.
I'm getting maybe 15-20% of my usual data speed that I was getting with FR008.
What gives? Is this a known issue? Kernel problem?

No, this is not a common issue (never encountered this in fact). It's not kernel issue. Have you tried rebooting? Try testing your data speeds with the speedtest app on the market. Also, try giving the phone some time to settle down since you just flashed it (and did a clean install).

Speedtest gives me anywhere from 200-500kbps... I was getting 2500-3200kbps on FR008.
I have rebooted and actually even reflashed, plus tried a different kernel. Nothing seems to help. Even WiFi speeds are slow, though... although not nearly as slow as my 3G speeds!
It's so disappointing...

Yeah - really can't seem to pinpoint the issue quite yet, but it is certainly related to CM7!

I'm having the same issue and I am running cm 7.2 (rc1?) I have tweaked everything i could think of with no change.

Maybe something didn't get cleared when you updated and it's causing weird problems. Try the following:
1) From CWM, make a backup so you can restore it if the following does not solve the problem.
2) Wipe data/factory reset
3) Partitions menu > Format system
4) Partitions menu > Format boot
5) Install CM7 and gapps
6) Reboot, and see if data speeds are still slow
7) If it didn't help, restore your previous backup and you won't have lost anything

Data and Wifi Troubles?

This is real weird. As of last week sometime, my phone will stop all data connections or wifi connections after about 6 hours post reboot. The only way for it to work again is to reboot. I'm assuming it's an app of some sort causing this because I did a fresh install and the problem is persisting. I have uninstalled all new apps I've installed over the past week as well. Anyone have anything similar or possible solutions? Running CM7 N214 & DCs 8.9.1.

I was actually seeing this as well, but not consistently enough to report it. Was happening on all the nightlies I'd been on after n13x (which was one in the 15x range, and a couple 20x ones). When it did happen for me, it was usually about the same time of day, so I think it might have been on a 24 hour cycle (I don't normally power my device off, so it was probably hitting at 24 hours after the reboot to fix the last one). The strangest part was that the connection icon color would continue to show a google connection, and if I was on 3g the up/download arrows would light as I would expect. Just no data traffic. Was running DC8.9.1 on all of the above nightlies.
this is not so much of a wifi issue but i did loose my data connection twice in the past month. the first time i was outside and i wanted to check my email but i couldn't. i was abel to send and receive texts messages and was abel to make and receive phone calls but no data was available and no internet. i try re booting the phone but still no data. about two hours later i check to see if i have internet, and it was working all by it self. not sure if this was my phone or a AT$T network thing. the second time i was leaving from my home wifi to my AT$T 3g network but the data connection was unavailable, no internet. but this time a reboot fixed it. i have had my aria for about a year now and this has never happen before. this may vary easily be a network, cell tower thing and nothing is wrong with my phone.

That definitely sounds like a network issue because it's not repetitive or consistent.

Hi,
I've been having the wifi/data drop issue since 2.3.7. I was hoping nightly 242 would solve it. No mas. Lost data connection after ten hours. Flash 208 and all data/wifi issues disappear.
Stock kernel. DC's kernel doesn't seem to affect the issue for better or worse.
Will keep lurking over at the developers forum...
John
I use the stock kernel and I think this problem is affecting my Aria too. Wifi usually doesn't die until about 2 or 3 days.
Flashed 243 and DC's 8.9.2a kernel yesterday. No data loss all day and was still connected this morning when I woke the phone up. Just flashed 244 and 8.9.2a. We'll see how long connection lasts.
John
I had to reboot my phone running stock 242 today. Wifi showed connected but the Market took almost 60 secs to open. Opening "my apps" didn't work. Reboot cured all.
The problem has been narrowed down to drowningchild's kernel. If you are using this kernel, just reflash your nightly to revert back to the stock kernel and all will be fixed. To follow this problem since it is not fixed yet, refer to this kernel's thread in the development section.

For me, the problem started with 2.3.7 and continued whether I ran DC's kernels or not. Flashing nightly 208 eliminated the problem, but of course, who wants to go backwards?

Did you do a full wipe when going Fromm 2.3.5 to 2.3.7? I haven't heard of anyone with stock kernel issues.

I'm pretty sure some over in the "Nightly builds starting!" thread mentioned drops with the stock kernel.
No, I didn't do a full wipe. So far, I haven't noticed any drops since 244 with DC's 8.9.2a kernel. Fingers crossed.

Oh, ok. I just didn't recall any, but I could be wrong. I think for best results, you need to full wipe when going from 2.3.5 to 2.3.7. Also, I have heard that 8.9.2a is still dropping for some with the recent nightlies. I have had no problem with the stock kernel, as I did a wipe when going to 2.3.7.
I was the one having probs with the stock kernel, but a format and flash of 242 fixed it. Been running fairly good since then.
I did a full wipe and flash of N245 + DC 8.9.2a tonight. We'll see how it goes tomorrow. So far, GPS locks in less than 5 seconds.
FWIW, I also did not flash the very latest gapps, the 08282011 version. Does that matter?
John
OK, the big drop came about fifteen hours after wipe/flash w/8.92a. Airplane mode toggle did not bring connection back. Flashed N245 again. This time I'll try the stock kernel and see how it goes.

Wifi Problems on Rooted Stock ROM 2.3.6

Switched from Unnamed V1.3 to this ROM
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1353513.
Everything is great on it except for my wifi going out every 2-3 minutes then coming back. I even re flashed it twice and it still is doing it. What could be causing this issue? I looked through the entire thread and no one else is complaining about it. I'm going to have to go back to UNnamed for a bit in the meanwhile.
and all I did was install the Rom, no themes.
Thank you.
Similar issue on wifes bone stock phone 2 days after receiving. Would connect to router fine, but drop internet every 2 to 3 minutes. Exchanged it.
My Phone (bone stock) lasted 27 days before the internet stopped connecting. Again router would connect fine. I did extensive net searching for the issue and found that turning the "Airplane" mode on and off would allow it to connect briefly.
Exchanged it.
"Expert" guesses blame either the motherboard or GB 2.3.4. Most people I read about had the issue after upgrading to 2.3.4.
I found the problem will get worse untill you cannot connect to the internet at all unless you use Data.
Possible fix
I had the same issue. My data connection on wifi would constantly stop working until I went in and out of airplane mode. I went into recovery and cleared the cache and it seems to have fixed it (at least for now). Been running fine for a day.
Clearing the cache can help many times. Best to wipe it before and after any flash, just to make sure.
Usually it's not needed to go back to 100% stock to flash a new rom. But if you're having issues, try it out. Make sure to wipe everything you can in recovery and on the phone (backup your files).
Again, not saying that it's a 'necessary' step, but it will rule out most possible user issues.

That's not rooted stock, that's a leak.
A leak which happens to be known to have wifi issues with custom kernels, shoman94 thought he fixed them but maybe he didn't.
When mine was acting up I was unrooted on stock. Clearing the cache appeared to have fixed it.

Weird... I'm Using it just fine.
I was having WIFI issues at home when stock and rooted running Unnamed. The phone wouldnt stay connected for more than a couple minutes then i would have to enter and exit Airplane mode to get it to reconnect. I decided to buy a different router to see if that made a difference and this solved my problem. I had a Belkin N band which was replaced by a Netgear N600. Now i have better range and it stays connected all the time. I know this doesnt sound like the issue you had but I figured I would post in case anyone else reads this thread and is having issues.

The other day actually with the 2.3.6. leak I did get around to testing with another router(someone elses in the area apparently). My phone never lost connection once with it. But, when I switched back to using the router in my home, my connection wouldn't last no more than 2 minutes before going out then reappearing.
You had the same problems with UnNamed as I did with the 2.3.6 leak.
I've been running UnNamed practically for a while now and haven't had a single problem with the wifi.
That's odd.

[Q] Wifi issues (rooted)

Hello all,
I've recently rooted my device and flashed eclipse 1.3. Since I've had the device (2 weeks), it has been dropping wifi randomly. It will drop it and pick it up at totally random times. I've tried reflashing, clearing cache and dalvik, flashing mods having to do with wifi, and anything else I can think of.
I've checked all my settings that deal with wifi, and everything checks out. The only thing I haven't tried is a factory reset, but when I purchased the device, it was already done. Does this mean that it is defective? Is there anything else I can try save a factory reset?
Thanks for your help guys.
I would suggest doing this instead:
Get the 2.3.4 SBF and put that onto your phone. This does wipe out everything, so do a backup of your apps and settings before you SBF.
Download Eclipse again to ensure that the previous image wasn't corrupted and flash it after rooting your device
I guess my big question is, what version were you running BEFORE you flashed Eclipse? Was it 2.3.4? If it wasn't, that may be your problem right there, possibly, although most people experience a lot of FCs when they do this.
is it dropping it while the screen is off or on?
I am was running 2.3.4 blur stock rooted. And it happens when the screen is on and off, even when you're using it.

Well, I sbfed to 2.3.4 and flashed the new update, plus flashed the new eclipse and all the tweaks and it still drops. It has to be hardware. Oh well, eBay bastards.
Update: turned out to be the router. Got a new one and it's all set!

Some people have mentioned that their phones got warmer. I would check out the running processes that you have...I went back to cm7.2 for now.
Alright thanks. I think I might switch back until another beta comes or it becomes stable.
Try rebooting a couple times. Mine got hot after initial boot up but was fine after a couple reboots.
Mine stays warm with cm9. I went back to lokos rom. Its killer. CM9 has just not worked well for me. Freezes and reboots. Random force closes without the fc notification. Odd stuff. And I've installed all the different ways ya can. And the ICS update for the mopho isn't scheduled till the 3rd quarter. So don't expect a perfect ICS till the leaks start for that update. Fortunately we have devs like Joker on it and we might just get lucky enough to have a stable build before the ota rolls out in the fall.

Ive been running CM9 and constantly keeping up with new releases since the first few Alpha builds. Mine gets relatively hot(45 degrees Celsius give or take) when doing something like gaming for a while or downloading large files over 3g. Other than that i have no heat issues, and i haven't had a single force close or random reboot on the latest Beta builds. If you go to it make sure to full wipe everything the first time and you should have little, if any, issues.
I'm running the 0.1.0 beta and the camera is supposed to be working right? I'm unsure if I have to do something. Because for me as of now it is not working. Any help?

If you go into the settings you can adjust how fast you will allow the processor to run. If you reduce this then you will have less heat from it working so hard. They are running a bit hot because CM9 unlocks alot of their true power.

Having issues...are you a flash-a-holic? This works for me...

I flash a lot. I also have noticed my CM10.1 running like total crap lately. I also went back to Sense about a week ago but came back to CM.
I have done this once before and had great success, and just did it again today and my phone is running super smooth.
1) Back up anything you care about (pics, music, docs, titanium backups, etc)
2) boot into recovery
3) FORMAT EVERYTHING.
4) Copy ROM to storage (might have to mount it)
5) Flash
I did not restore everything from TiBU, but installed most of my apps from the Play Store. I decided to install things as I needed them because I realized I don't use probably half of the apps I have backed up. I did about 20 apps from TiBU (no data).
Copy stuff back to your phone that you want to have on it...for me it was just pics and a few eBooks.
I know a factory reset and a flash would normally do the trick, but I think perhaps something got screwy when I went to the Sense ROM. Since did these steps this morning, my phone has not rebooted, crashed system ui, screen always wakes up, no proximity issues, and battery life is pretty good (stock CM kernel from Fly)
Edit: statement that proximity sensor issue did not occur has been revoked.
3)FORMAT EVERYTHING

I don't just wipe data and factory reset. I format the storage media and the system partition. If you have TwRP go to Wipe, advanced, check everything and wipe. Basically your phone is a clean slate.
I used to use AmonRa and I know you can do the same, but can't recall the actual steps.

I have noticed a lot depends on what you are flashing and what you are doing with it. I use FlyHalf's CM build and kept getting myself into trouble with custom kernels. I have been running incredibly stable for about a week now on stock kernel with no tweaks. I do have Autokiller Memory Optimizer installed now however. Not sure if it's helping, but it definitely is not hurting.

So I've been on Infection 2.7 since Sunday. Formatted as instructed, installed very little apps, all from the play store. Didn't restore anything (including my Nova backup, which I did almost every time before this), and I kept the stock kernel (Funky 3.4) without making ANY changes to the settings.
I have noticed that it is much more stable, as I have only gotten 1 or 2 FCs since flashing...I used to get 2-3 per hour. I am still getting the "hot reboot" on manual wake though. The scenario is this: "Notification!", I press the power button, the soft keys light up but the screen stays black, a few seconds later I get the infamous spinning matrix android. To me, because it happens almost exclusively on wake, it has to be related to the kernel/governor and have something to do with it pulling out of deep sleep.
I am following the Infection, SenseXP and Funky AOSP threads, and will try each of the new ROMS/Kernel/Recovery combos this weekend and post some results as soon as I get something definitive.
As always, post if you have anything else I can try, but for anyone wondering if its worth formatting....it certainly appears to have made my phone alot more stable, so give it a shot.
I have another user that is getting very similar symptoms -sans the FC's on a different rom I dev for. Best me and him could come up with is that it is a signal issue, causing a crash at low end. Try a minimum clock @ 432mhz.

Is there a way to prevent deep sleep? I know this would destroy battery life, but it might help determine if its related to waking from deep sleep. In the mean time, I'll bump the min to 432.

Yeah, I'm on RA, HIRO, and Infection 2.8.1 right now, so we'll see how it goes.
You don't want to disable deep sleep. At max you will only get 2hrs of battery also could even trigger thermal throttling. Try a sense ROM with my kernel version 3.4 and report back that's if 432 doesn't work out.
Also try switching to Br0kens vanilla aokp.

You don't want to disable deep sleep. At max you will only get 2hrs of battery also could even trigger thermal throttling. Try a sense ROM with my kernel version 3.4 and report back that's if 432 doesn't work out.
Also try switching to Br0kens vanilla aokp.

UPDATE
Increasing to 432 did not solve the problem, but then I thought that my screen brightness app Lux may have something to do with it. After disabling the app, I didnt have a single quick reboot in 2 or 3 days. Just re-installed it this morning and rebooted on my first wake. I did not have any reboots on the stock live wallpaper or a replacement wallpaper, but I was on a non-live wallpaper when I got the reboot from the app.
If I have any more issues, I'll try the Sense or Br0ken roms and report back.
OP: Sorry for the thread jack, and thanks again for the tip to wipe. That plus what I mentioned above has given me the most stable experience I've had since March!
Things were getting wonky with more than usual reboots, no matter what rom I loaded. So I backed up pics, formatted everything in recovery (all partitions and storage, flashed (Beanstalk) and treated the phone as if it were new. No app or data restores, etc.
Phone is running super solid without any issues, not a single blip.
It's like formatting a hard drive and reinstalling the OS and rebuilding from scratch.
