Can I update clockworkmod? - TouchPad General

When I installed android, I thought the tutorial said to not update clockworkmod as it was specially made for the touchpad. I'm now reading things that say to be on the latest cwm version. Can I update cwm on my touchpad? Will it break any features?
Sent from my rooted HRC Rezound

There is currently no other ClockworkMod besides the one that is in the official thread for the Touchpad.
Do not use any other version of CWM with the Touchpad.

There is only one ClockworkMod. There are, however, other recoveries in development. There is a ClockworkMod touchscreen version, which I read has some bugs still. And then there is TWRP wich is more of a visual style recovery. If you already have ClockworkMod on your device and it works, there is no need to change it.

Noob questions.

Hey guys I am new to android, and I need some questions answered before I go and start modding/flashing roms. Thanks in advance!! So here they are:
My questions.
1: okay cool, so I've successfully rooted my gio. Awesome, but now I would like to flash cyanogen mod 7.2 or the beta cyanogen 9, but I need clockwork recovery mod. In order to do this i need to place it on the root of my sd card. But how do I properly partition it?
2. I also need to install clockwork recovery mod before I flash a new Rom for my gio. In the thread ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1421650). It mentions something about the ext4 partition and rfs roms. I think it said if I don't have it I have to apply the patch. I am not sure what those mean nor which apply to me. (I am using stock gingerbread 2.3.4)
3. I am interested in overclocking and changing cpu settings for speed and good battery. But I have heard that it may not be supported by stock kernels. So if I do flash cm7 or cm9, does it automatically flash its own kernel that allows that to be done? And if it does, will it be built in so I can do it from settings, or do I have to download the application from Google play?
Sent from my GT-S5660M using XDA
1. take the app rom manager, the free version from the play store, grant su when asked and install the CWM recovery..
2. never heard of??
3. i think there is already a customer kernel installed, if not, just download one from youre devices xda side and for overclocking you can use the Rom Toolbox or the normal cyanogenmod settings
have fun and dont forget to thank
Thanks alot! So I do not need a special Version of clockwork recovery? Like the one from this thread? (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1421650). Sorry for the dumb questions, I just dont want to brick it! And i also looked at the rom manager desciption and it says i need a clockwork compatible kernel first?
http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager
link for the official clockwockmod recovery.. just go down the list until you find samsung galaxy gio and yes i think if you install the recovery via rom manager their shouldnt be any problem
.. the link you wrote is another recovery.. which one is better, id dont know got a nexus no gio

CWM Touch Flash Permenent

Hey there!
So I've read a bit lately on rooting my S2 and what not (as I decided to give it a go), and after flashing CWM Touch to my S2 I loved it and found it so much easier to install ZIP's and what not. However, on boot it disappeared, then to find that it was only a temporary Flash and when I rebooted the phone, it simply reverted back to the normal CWM.
Now before asking me to use Google or search for a thread, by god I did that. And after looking for almost 2 hours, I found nothing that gave me a definite answer whether it was possible or not. And so this is why I'm creating a thread.
So is it possible to flash CWM touch on my S2 permanently (like other phones have), or do I have to stick with the volume/power button edition.
Thanks everyone! And thanks in advance.
The recovery, it's part of the kernel so which ever version of ClockworkMod the kernel shipped with that will always be there. If you really want touch recovery, you can flash Siyah Kernel and you'll be rooted and have its touch recovery.

Hmm I hoped that wasn't the case.
But isn't there a way to use ODIN3 to flash the kernel with a custom recovery, such as the CWM touch?
Sorry if that sounds stupid, I just am new to all this.
Not sure if you are allowed to bump this or not, but I just did.
Really want to know if it is possible to flash CWM touch on the kernal guys!

Why don't you just keep a touch cwm.zip file in your download folder and flash that after you flash a new rom?

Thanks for the reply.
And I do have the CWM touch zip in my internalSD but there isn't and point flashing it if everytime I reboot the phone and it goes back to the stock kernel.
I just want to know if there is a method possible to flash CWM touch into the kernel, and make it permanent, or at least fine a .tar version of it so I can flash it using odin
Once again I'll bump this.
Does no one have a solution at all?

Edited. Sorry, I re-read the thread. As already stated, you'll need to flash a kernel that has the version of recovery you want. If you want a different version of recovery with a specific kernel, you'll need to start making your own kernels.

Well I cannot find a .tar version of CWM touch so I guess I won't be able to flash the kernel.

Hmm I saw RedPill but wasn't a fan of it, I really do like CWM
Does anyone know if there is a kernel that has CWM touch in it? For CM10 preferably.

Why don't you just look at the kernels in the development section, specifically for one with touch recovery? You could have found all the available options and tried them out by now.
Or are you just being lazy?

No I'm not lazy, sorry if I came across that way. I am usually one to simply find something on my own, but for this I simply cannot.
I've looked and cannot find what I asked for in the OP, and am still looking and found nothing. So I simply asked a question to make sure that there isn't a possibility that it can be done.
Anyway it doesn't seem possible at the moment, so I guess I'll wait.

cm10-CWM or TWRP ?

As we move forward with cm10, Is it better to use TWRP or CWM ? Any advantages to either ? Can one go back and forth ?

I've been bouncing back and forth (CWM 6.x, TWRP 2.1.4 and 2.2.2). Not sure if that's recommended or not, but its been working for me. YMMV though.

TWRP has been bullet-proof for me since I installed it. No problems flashing CM7, CM9, or CM10 ROMs, nor other ROMs based on those.
I'm am currently using TWRP to flash Linaro CM10 SGT7 Port For Nook Tablet, but when it reboots i get kicked back to TWRP even tho it was successful
Any ideas? I have had no issues with CWM
CWM it not good for flashing CM10...Surely
The cm9 5.1 cwm can flash all roms those you listen can't flash cm7 roms

Where did you get CWM 6.x? I thought 5.5.x was the latest. Please link if you have it available.
As far as the OP, I have been flashing everything across the board for my NT with CWM 5.5, it has worked fine for all three CM builds.

TWRP 2.1.4 can flash CM7 ROMs without any problems. I haven't updated to TWRP 2.2, yet...

CWM or TWRP

So I keep seeing people posting "flash with CWM" CWM is what I have always used on my devices and when we unlocked the N2 it had TWRP on it. So my question is, does it make a difference one or the other? I was thinking of flashing over to CWM but have been enjoying what has been there since I unlocked.
Thanks guys!

Imo cwm is way more reliable, I've never had issues in the 5 years I've been on android and used cwm. I've heard of problems with twrp from time to time, it's up to you though. Some roms can only be flashed through cwm though.
tappin from a paranoid Note II
In the past I had serious issues with CWM and/or Rom Manager. Rom Manager often would not really load CWM when it said it did and CWM would not install roms/kernels. However, that was a few years ago and I've not used it since. I've never had an issue with TWRP and I believe that since their update a few days ago it will flash the AOSP roms too.
They will both do the job.
CWM Now..
I always used TWRP on my Thunderbolt. But now I'm back to CWM on the Note 2 so I can flash ROM's that TWRP doesn't play well with.
Is TWRP, Titanium?

Team Win Recovery Project.
And OP: its a matter of preference ASWELL AS some roms do not play well one. If you are a new user to the overall custom rom scene, I suggest sticking to TWRP. Otherwise if there is a rom that piques your interest use CWM.
I believe you also have the option of swapping between the 2 on the fly, because both are available in zips.
Cwm:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=35396518
Just flash from your current recovery and you will be able to use it upon next reboot into recovery. Be it known that CWM doesnt play with exFat SD cards so that is a known issue.
And if you decide you like TWRP better and wany to go back:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=35402954
That thread should link you to twrp website to get the zip to flash back to twrp.

I think it's all personal preference, I used to use twrp religiously until cwm touch.... I could have the reliability of cwm but with the touch functions of twrp.. No Brainer.

Some times it will. Sometimes it won't. Don't want to be too reductionist and say its 50/50 but its usually better to stick to what the instructions say unless someone in th3 thread can confirm it works for the other

ClockWorkMod v6.0.3.x for i9100

Dear all,
The official latest CWM release for i9100 is v5.8.3.1 (see www.clockworkmod.com). Is there an official (or fully working version) of CWM 6.0.3.x for the i9100? For e.g. T-Mobile there is a release available. Can I use this as well?
for now, I can also flash Philz kernel to get CWM v6.0.3.2, but I first want to have a separate CWM version installed. Thanks for help.

I'm also trying to install/flash latest cwm without being part of any kernel / mod. Did you have any luck with that?
Philz IS stock kernel.....no tweaks, no mods......other than CWM and root.......afaik.....if you want a (cwm + root) stock phone, philz will give you that.......
My Wife says I'm a phone geek.....
I'd have to agree.....
I don't see why I should install a kernel, even stock, when only recovery partition needs changing. In most phones there are flashable files through adb, or similar ways, to install cwm. Will it work through rom manager app?
I'm not sure about just CWM on its own. It probably does exist. Just needed to jump in quick.... DO NOT use ROM manager on an i9100. Sure-fire way to screw things up /brick.
Ps. Keith is right, the only thing different about PhilZ kernel is recovery and it's rooted. Nothing else is changed.
Sent from a galaxy far, far away
And when you add the fact that it can be flashed using the stock recovery.........
It doesn't get any easier, safer or straightforward than that. No disrespect intended, but I can't see the problem with doing it this way.......
My Wife says I'm a phone geek.....

You really are trying to make this as difficult as possible for yourself, aren't you ?
Take the good advice you've been given; particularly the bit about staying away from Rom Manager unless you want to find out why you don't use it with the SGS2 the hard way.
Will do that... however, I'll try to make a flashable zip (with stock recovery) of latest cwm alone, and will report back... just in case someone wants it in the future.
