As stated in the title, this concerns the Japanese Evo 4g.
I have built an ICS ROM (4.0.4, with Cyanogenmod's vendor files), now I think I need to try and compile a kernel specifically for this device.
I looked at Cyanogenmod's guide, as well as Tiamat's, for ideas.
Is this possible? I mean, I'm going to attempt it anyways just to see what happens. But, if there are other things I need to look at, I'd like to be pointed in the right direction. I wonder how different the Japanese EVO 4G is compared to the one on Sprint's network in regards to building kernels.
Thanks.

Hi everyone,
I was just wondering just how big a difference there is to the ROMs for the CDMA and the GSM version of our phones?
I suppose the kernels are at least different, but the main part of the rest of it must be the same.
Back when I had the HTC Magic there were different versions of the mainboard in the phone. At some point someone figured out how to make the .zip install from recovery include both kernels and push the right one to the phone when installing.
Having development of ROMs fragmented is pretty sad, as there is a lot going on in the CDMA forum and not so much in the GSM forum yet (... yeah, you guessed it, I have the GSM version)
Has anyone taken two ROMs apart and compared?

Honestly I can say that for right now you're not missing much (it's only exciting until your cool new rom starts to crash randomly). You'll almost definitely get the important stuff like aosp and mini, although it may take a little bit longer. For a GSM phone, you're not in a bad spot though: between the development for the CDMA 3D and the sensation, you've pretty much got all the ingredients for your GSM 3D hahaha.
now that i have an evo 3d ill be differentiating the apks and libs from cdma vs gsm and try to figure out how to have a universal rom for both phones
Hello,
So I want to port over some CDMA roms over to my GSM Evo 3D, just to try them out. I have done some porting before mostly porting T-mobile G1 Rom's to the HTC Magic, which was very basic all I had to do was switch the zimage from the G1 rom, to one that was compatible with the htc magic. I wanna try this method with the 3DEvO, but i am unsure if it will work. Do you guys think there are any other software changes that I have to make, or do you guys think there are also hardware differences that would not allow me to port the roms?
If someone can shed some light on this topic, I would greatly appreciate it

there are numerous software changes that need to be made as well. lots of us cdma guys tried porting over the eu 2.3.4 rom but were never successful. never could get the display to work properly.
Don`t know exactly if it`s possible, maybe any Dev knows this!
What is important to do this, any files etc.I have to remove first
from the CDMA ROM before starting to port?
Any tips?

from what I have read it is not possible to use a CDMA Rom on the GSM version.

I think he gets that... Which is why he is asking if "PORTING" is possible.
Honestly I don't have a clue. I mean, you wouldn't think it would be all that much work. Its most probably a situation where CDMA devs don't have GSM phones and can't really use them to test anything since they aren't able to connect anything. Ya know?
That's my guess anyway.

Exactly. Which is why if someone attempts a port by comparing the CDMA and GSM versions and gets us GSM owners to test it out, who knows might actually get something good
From what I've read, the differences between the sources of each version of the E3D are more significantly different than most would think. Add onto that the fact that the kernel sources provided by HTC for the GSM are currently broken, and I don't think porting at this point to be an easy venture.
Hopefully, when we get working kernel sources for the GSM, we'll see this kind of porting.

What other differences besides the kernel and the radio are there? Could you post a link where you read this?
Seems not easy to port from cdma to gsm.
But not possible if I only try to replace some files (boot.img etc.) from
a stock gsm ROM into the cdma ROM?
There are more things to do?
I´m interested, because only cdma version has MIUI ROM.
Maybe there are other devices (gsm) where I can port from.
Which phone would be the most similar,so I can try to port?

I remember a while back on the OG EVO someone ported the acer liquid ROM, which was a gsm phone. Convince a gsm dev to port the ROM or donate a gsm phone to a US dev so they can test on.
So you mean it`s easier I should try to port a acer liquid ROM
to my evo 3D gsm, because acer liquid is similar to evo 3D?
Maybe HTC Sensation ROMs good too,to start porting?
Just poking around the forums with various searching and I couldn't seem to find a solid answer to the question, "Why was the HTC mecha source code never merged back into the CM repository?"
I've found vague references to the fact that there was "something" that couldn't be pushed back up, but no real details. Anyone happen to know what that something was?
LTE. They do not officially support it. Not by looking at the devices on their website.

this is correct. i am not copletely certain on this, but it think is goes something like this...in short
Gingerbread does not have LTE baked into the code so CM7 had to be Kanged and hacked to get LTE working.
ICS on the other hand, was built around LTE, so it should be an officially supported device.
Ah, that totally makes sense. Thanks!
I would really appreciate some help with a project that I am hoping to start soon. I would REALLY like to get Sense launcher (Rosie) working on a non-HTC phone, specifically the ZTE Force 4g. I am asking for help from Droid Incredible 4g devs, because of the similarity of the platforms.
Both phones are MSM8690, both LTE, both 1GB ram, both are stock ICS 4.0.3.
What I don't know is how well this might go. That's where I need your expertise!
You see, I am sort of an HTC junkie. My last 4 phones were HTC's and I am very used to the Sense UI. There is not a whole lot of development going on for my phone (you can check it out on androidforums.com in the ZTE Force 4G - All Things Root forum).. Basically there is a CM10 port which lacks bluetooth and wifi capability, the stock rom, a rooted debloated stock rom (DroidForce, which is nice btw, and what I plan to use for a base). Also, a JB rom which is so new that pretty much nothing works. The Kernel sources for my phone JUST got released, and many are using the matrix kernel ported from the Avid. I feel that it would be good to add a little variety for ZTE Force users, and if I can bring together a Sense modded ROM for the community it would be nice.
Yes, I know that Sense is not often ported to other platforms due to the difficulty, and this thread will hopefully help me assess the doability of the project.
My first question, for those of you in the know, is what is the kernel version of the first stock rom on Droid Incredible 4g? If it is 3.0.8 then that is another thing that these phones share in common.
My first Sense related question is also about the kernel. Are there dependencies (modules, whatever) in the HTC kernel that are required for sense to work? I have read that there may be but have not seen this confirmed.
Next question would be about the screen resolution. The Force 4g is 480x800 while Incredible 4G is 540x960, both are 4". If this did theoretically make it to the point of testing, will the launcher screens and icons scale automatically, or will each graphic have to be resized? If resized, how complicated would that get?
Aside from the possibility of kernel dependencies, the next most important question is, "What exactly do I need?" This is where I would probably need the most help from you guys. If this is even possible to attempt, I don't know which frameworks I would need to add, what apks and files to rip from the Incredible 4g rom. All of the very detailed stuff which I know some of you guys know, I will need to learn.
I know probably most of you might possibly think that this idea is dumb and just say "Buy an HTC", but because of budgetary constraints I could not get a 4g HTC and use it on my carrier (Boost btw). I have the HTC Evo design 4G and it was on Boost but it's WiMax and we all know that is a dead duck.
So is anyone willing to give me some answers to the questions above? If there is a possibility of this working (any version of Sense would be fine) then I would greatly appreciate some guidance! I'd really rather not go the route of another launcher skinned like sense. That seems lame to me. Plus, I dig a challenge!
Thanks for taking the time to read and I thank you in advance for any responses!
Cheers!

Guess I'll just dive into this on my own..
Wish me luck?
