please help me to upgrade the ROM - Motorola Photon 4G

hi, so i just bought a photon few weeks ago
and this is my first android phone.
i previously only uses blackberries and iPhones
so i don't really know about android that much.
now i learned that the latest "OS" stock one is
4.5.1A-1_sun-198_7
mine is currently running
4.5.1A-1_sun-198_6
the question is , How do i upgrade to the latest stock OS ?
i'm not in the US and i'm not using Sprint as my operator
i use a CDMA carrier here in my country.
When i hit the "System updates" under setting
and choose to "update motorola software" it says my device is up to date
another thing
when i try to "update PRL" and "Update Profile" it says Error
what does sit do actually ?
in my previous phone i only need to update the "OS" so i don't know what is PRL and what is Profile
please bear with me as this is really my first ever android phone.
thank you very much .

Flash sbf, will lose all data though.

prl is like the latest update for your radio to connect to the cell tower your profile i believe is the different settings for that radio chip, what frequency to connect to, what signal strength is strong enough to connect to ionno random stuff like that
Sent from my MB855 using xda premium

198_7 was a leaked version never officially released by Motorola or Sprint, so 198_6 is actually the latest released version. If you want to try the leaked 198_7, read up on how to use sbf in the development section.
As far as prl and profile, those are related to how the phone connects to Sprint's network here in the US. I'm not sure how that works if you're using the Photon in another country, hopefully someone else will chime in on that...
Sent from my MB855 using Tapatalk

okay so thats mean i have the latest "official" OS then ?
and i don't need to upgrade the PRL and the Profile ?
since I'm using it internationally and i don't use Sprint as my Carrier ?

198_7
Basically if you want to upgrade to the newest SBF, you download RSD Lite, then install it to your PC and make sure you have the latest motorola drivers (RSD should auto install them). Then you download the 198_7 SBF file. Now you shut your phone off. Open RSD Lite and click the browse button (...) and select the 198_7 SBF and select that as the file to flash. Now you hold the volume up button and power button at the same time and continue holding them until it says "RSD Mode" on your phone's screen. Now plug your phone into you computer, make sure it pops up in RSD Lite, then Hit Start! and that's it! it will take a couple minutes to flash, and will also delete your data, so make sure to back everything up first! Hope i could help!
If you need the download link for the files, PM me and i can hook you up, I am too new to post links!

DO NOT USE ROM MANAGER/TOOLBOX WITH X2 IT IS NOT SUPPORTED AND ONLY CAUSES PROBLEMS. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
We have a lot of great questions on this board with equally great answers. It would be nice to arrange the most common questions and answers in one thread so that they can be more easily found. I would like to invite everyone to come up with what you think are the most common questions, along with a link to the answers and I will create it here as a F.A.Q and get it stickied.
Teminology
SBF - System Boot File
OTA - over the air
CWM - clockworkmod
CM7 - cyanogenmod rom
GB - Gingerbread
My phone came with software I do not want, can I remove it and if so how?
Much of the software that came with your phone can be easily removed. Check out THIS LINK for a full list of applications you can remove along with instructions on how to do so.
I have flashed a custom rom and now my battery life is terrible, what can I do?
The solution which works for most is to reset your battery status log. First you will want to charge your phone to 100% Then, plug your phone into the wall charger and open the recovery app and reboot to recovery. Once there scroll down to Advanced and the select Wipe Battery Status. Return to the main menu and select Reboot. Unplug your phone and do not plug it back in to USB/Car/Wall until it's below 20%, let it charge again to full uninterrupted and you should notice battery life is back to normal.
I'm on vacation with my laptop but do not have internet access where I'm staying. I would like to tether my phone so that I can share a few pictures with family. What can I do?
One of the easiest ways to share your internet connection is by using an application bundle called PdaNet. You download this application on your computer (Windows and Mac) and it will also prompt you to install the application on your phone. The process is very simple and explained in detail on the applications web site. You can find out more, and download the application using THIS LINK.
(Thank you MikeJ92YJ for submitting the below questions/answers).
What's An SBF File?
SBF Is A File Leaked By Motorola That Is The System Image Flashed By RSDLite.
Does the V6Supercharger, 98KickassKernelTweaks, And
3GTurbocharger Work For Both Froyo And Gingerbread Based Roms?
Yes, Instructions With Pictures.
What Do The MinFree Values Control And Do?
FOREGROUND_APP: This is the application currently on the screen, and running
VISIBLE_APP: This is an application that is open, and running in the background because it's still doing something
SECONDARY_SERVER: This is a process (a service that an application needs) that is alive and ready in case it's needed to do something
HIDDEN_APP: This again is a process, that sits idle (but still alive) in case it's needed by an app that's alive and running
CONTENT_PROVIDER: This is apps that provide data (content) to the system. HTC Facebook Sync? That's a CONTENT_PROVIDER. So are things like the Android Market, or Fring. If they are alive, they can refresh and provide the content they are supposed to at the set interval. If you kill them, they can't of course.
EMPTY_APP: They are apps that you have opened, but are done with them. Android uses a unique style of handling memory management. When an activity is ended, instead of killing it off Android keeps the application in memory so that opening them again is a faster process. When this memory is needed by a different application or process, the RAM is flushed and made available for the new app.
How do i get RSDLite to work with my phone?
1. Start RSD Lite And Plug Your USB Cable Into The Back Of The Computer Only.
2. Press And Hold The Power Button And Hold The Volume Up Rocker Until You See "Starting RSD Protocol Support".
3. Now Plug Your USB Cable Into The Phone. You Will Then See Inside Of RSD Lite That Your Device Is Now Connected.
4. Click On The "..." Find The SBF File You Unzipped And Open It.
5. Click Start. After The Device Reboots And RSD Says 100% You May Then Close RSD Lite, It's Possible It May Give You An Error Saying That It Is Not Done Yet. You Can Ignore That And Click Okay To Proceed.
When creating a backup which option do i choose?
This is up to you and where you want it, Internal will write the backup image to your phone where the External will write the backup image to your SD Card.
With the one click root method can I do the ota to get gb and the use the SBF file?
It Works For Both OTA Or SBF.

I will be adding a lot more as the days progress. Feel free to provide suggestions of what you guys feel should be on here. I will also be working to improve the format of the information that's displayed and do my best to add additional information as it becomes available.
You're Welcome Zak. I Told You Over At Droid Forums It Was Just Copy N Paste And They're All The Questions That Get Asked A Million Times. So When I Saw This Post I Knew Right Away.

Manual RAZR ICS Upgrade to 4.04

Just tested and can confirm this tutorial is working flawlessly

Please make sure thank him in his thread because if it were not for his kindness and time we may still be in the dark on this update.. THANX adamlee06

How to manually install Ice Cream Sandwich OTA update onto your RAZR / MAXX
These instructions will allow you to upgrade your stock "6.12.181.XT912.Verizon.en.US" Motorola Droid RAZR / RAZR MAXX to the OFFICIAL OTA Update.
If you are rooted, you will need to un-root. If you rooted your device, then you should know HOW to un-root without asking me.
Prerequisites:
■50% or higher battery charge
■A computer
■Your micro-USB cable to link phone and PC
■Stock "6.12.181.XT912.Verizon.en.US" phone. This can be checked via Settings>About Phone> "System Version"
■All files mentioned in the guide below.
■The ability to read instructions, and realize this is NOT complicated.
Before we begin, I am going to explain WHY this process isn't just a "copy/paste a file to your phone and update" affair.
When you download the update from Verizon through the "OTA" (Over-The-Air) process, your phone is instructed, via Verizon, to initiate the update.
Since you are here, you obviously have not received the update via that process, hence your phone has not been instructed to initiate the update,
regardless of whether or not you have manually downloaded the update files off the internet and placed them onto your phone. This process will force
the phone to initiate the update.
LET THERE BE ICE CREAM SANDWICH!
1.
Using your computer, download the update from here: http://www.goiww.com/xbot.html?task=weblink.go&id=29
The update will be named "Blur_Version.6.12.181.XT912.Verizon.en.US.zip", which might be confusing since it says "6.12.181" and not "6.16.211".
This is because Motorola/Verizon name their updates based on what version you are coming FROM, not going to. The file is around 354MB.
Do not unzip the file, leave it alone.
2.
Once its done, use this program to make sure the MD5 Check-sums are the same. All this does, is scan the file bit-by-bit to ensure that no data was corrupted
or lost during the download. It ensures your file is 100% correct with no problems.
MD5 Checker: http://download1us.softpedia.com/dl/aba5016f69e48081d3569bb7993d6151/4fe60d9b/100022900/software/file_management/md5.zip
MD5 Check-sum: 79A1EE4A992EACD1D08F98DEE5DEEBF7
Copy this and paste it into the MD5 Checker program (there is a "Paste" button) and select your
update file, and it will automatically check it. If they codes match, continue.
If not, re-download the update file.
3.
Once you verify the file is 100% correct from above, place it on your phones EXTERNAL SD card. Plug your phone up to your computer, select
USB Mass Storage from the notifications bar on your phone.
Two Micro-SD cards will open on your computer. If you aren't sure which is the external card,
then just put the update on both of them. It's not going to affect
anything to have it on both cards. If for example, your SD Cards came up as drives "E" and "F"
in Windows, then you would place the updates
in "E:\" and "F:\", essentially the root folders for those cards.
4.Download the "Razr Utility 1.7" from here: http://goiww.com/mattlgroff/DroidRazrUtility1.7forICS.zip
It is 747MB. Again check it using the MD5 checker to ensure its the complete, correct file.
MD5 Check-sum: 40DC068DC4B0DFBA12C96A7D18C267E5
If the file is good, extract it to your desktop, or wherever you want. Open the file "DroidRAZRUtility.bat", you may not see the ".bat" part.
IMPORTANT
If you have old RAZR drivers installed, none at all, or aren't sure:
There is a "Drivers" folder included with "Razr Utility 1.7". Install either 32-bit or 64-bit versions depending on which type of windows
(x86 "32-bit" / or 64-bit) installation you are running on your PC. This can be checked by right-clicking "My Computer" and clicking to "Properties".
5.Turn your phone off. After the phone is off, hold down BOTH volume buttons and press the Power button. You will boot into the phones
boot loader. Using the VOLUME DOWN KEY, scroll down "AP Fastboot", and press the VOLUME UP KEY to select it.
6.
Make sure your phone is charged, at least 50% or higher, and plug it up to your computer (if it isn't already).
Start the Razr Utility 1.7, hit any key to continue when it tells you to. You will then be at a menu with options 1 through 9.
Select option 1, and follow the on-screen directions. Once it is finished the phone should reboot. Turn the phone off.
7.After the phone is off, hold down BOTH volume buttons and press the Power button. You will boot into the phones
boot loader. Using the VOLUME DOWN KEY, scroll down "Recovery", and press the VOLUME UP KEY to select it.
The phone will reboot, take a moment at a blank screen, and you will then see a green Android with an exclamation sign.
8.At the green Android and exclamation image, press BOTH volume keys at the same time and release. You are now in the phones recovery menu.
Using the volume keys, scroll down to "Apply update from external storage" and press the POWER button.
9.Scroll down to "/Blur_Version.6.12.181.XT912.Verizon.en.US.zip" and hit the POWER button to apply the update.
10.The update process will take up to 10 minutes. After it is done, the phone will reboot itself. You are now on the ICS OTA Update.
IF YOU ENCOUNTER ANY PROBLEMS DURING UPDATE:
Reboot the phone into recovery again using step 7. scroll down to "wipe data/factory reset", press POWER, scroll down to "yes", and again hit POWER. After
the reset is complete, repeat steps 8 & 9.
■ ( COMPLETELY OPTIONAL)
I personally recommend doing a factory reset on your phone afterwards. You don't have to. If you've ever worked with
computers and installed a newer version of Windows over an older version, you'll know the newer version will still work, but
its slowed down a little by old files from older version of Windows you just replaced. Again, this isn't necessary, but recommended.
If you wish to do this, turn your phone off. Turn it back on by holding BOTH volume buttons down, and while holding them, press the Power button.
You will then have multiple options. Use the VOLUME DOWN key to scroll down to "Recovery", then press volume up to select it. The phone will
reboot into recovery to a picture of an Android with an exclamation point. Press BOTH volume buttons at the same time and release. Use the volume keys to scroll
down to "wipe data/factory reset", and hit the power button. Scroll down to "Yes" and hit the power button. After its done, select "reboot system now".
Congrats, you now have a 100% Factory fresh, Official OTA release 4.0.4 ICS RAZR/RAZR MAXX. Enjoy :]
HUGE thanks to "mattlgroff" from droidrzr for his utility, all his hard work, and amazing support to the RAZR/MAXX community!

hi there. i'm actually in the same position.
i had the bootstrapper, CWM and root. so prior to upgrading to ICS, i unrooted using oneclick tool, uninstalled boostrapper. still getting the same error as the screenshot above.
help is much appreciated. i just downloaeded 2.3.6 file from here.

will try to restore that and go really fresh.
thx.
update: someone at droidforums suggest this:
I had the same status 7 problem. Go to this link -[LEAK] Official ICS for the Bionic 4.0.4 (6.7.2231) & (6.7.2233)
Follow the directions. Make sure you have RSD lite version 5.7 ( 5.6 did not work) and the latest Motorola drivers ( old ones did not work). I was on 905 rooted, had to fxz back to 902, get the OTA update and then I flashed ICS with no problems. Works great. Also it is very important that you plug USB cable directly into computer and not into a USB hub ( I learned that the hard way last year!). Good luck!

Alright, here's how I fixed my issue. I downloaded a 902 FXZ, extracted it to my desktop. Downloaded RSDLite5.7, installed on my system. Ran RSDLite pointed it to the extracted 902 FXZ file, connected my Bionic to the computer, then started. This took several minutes but when completed, I was back on 902. With the phone disconnected from the computer, I ran the system update to get to 905. After that, I was able to flash to the ICS leak. I am not sure why this did not work initially, but I'm now running the ICS leak.

This method didn't work for me. All it did was factory reset my phone? I followed everything exactly and I made sure I did because I read each instruction like 2/3 times before I did it.

The Pic you posted seems to indicate you're still trying to "update from zip" with the stock GB recovery installed.
The key to the whole process (at least for me) is to get the ICS recovery installed on the phone - the bot with its belly open and a blue orb and NOT the Exclimination bot above - before updating from the zip. Until you get the ICS recovery installed, you're going to keep error'ing out.
Use Matt's Utility option 1 as described in the OP. Go into recovery and check to see if the ICS recovery was installed - look for a bot graphic different than the one with the box and arrow initially. First, the laying down bot, then the blue orb bot. Once you get that, you can expect upgrade success. It might take two or three attempts at installing the zip with cache wiping in between but you'll get there.
You want to see the bot attached below

So is there some sort of master code or some crap that sprint or motorola can provide to unlock a device on Domestic Carriers? or am i wasting breath arguing with them about the fact that the phone is capable of working on other domestic service they just arent allowing the software to do it? I mean i know the photon is capable of it it has the hardware. I just dont have the software is there any other way of getting this to work hacked rooted or otherwise and/or bone stock out of the box. Im game for anything here If someone has the beta stuff to test on the new update by all means ill take part.

It went into a boot loop at the M logo. finally i had no choice but to go into the motorola recovery console....i did a data reset there and it rebooted fine into YOUR ROM....except now I had no service whatsoever. OMG!!!!!! heart palpatations and sweaty palms ensued!!!!!!!!! oh no i bricked it aggghhhhh!!!!! BUT WAIT I can do an sbf via RSD to get it back from the dead RIGHT? RRRRRR!!!! WRONG ANSWER I had 2.3.5 the most current OTA out there isnt an sbf I've found for it......NOW WHAT WWWWWAAAAIIIIITTTTTT!!!!!! the bootstrap is an application that is coincedentily still on my memory chip!!!!! run bootstrap load up IT'S recovery console and thanks be to google there was my backup i had done at the beginning!!!!! SALVATION AT LAST!!!!!
Any ideas what just happened!???? Cause Im completely lost!!!!!
I have never known the photon to work on tmobile. Some guy on craigslist claimed to have one as soon as i said i want to meet to see he turned his phone off. Im sure if that was possible there would be a article on tmonews and engadget etc

I was going to do this but it doesnt work on the latest OTA so I tried the above and as of now no sucess maybe ill try again this weekend after more research and intel from the devs here hopefully
Side note: Do the captchas have to be put in on every reply this is gonna get old quick!!!
it will work on tmobile (see this thread). The only problem is that most tmobile locations dont have 3G available on 1900mhz, so the photon will only work at 2G. Tmobile is making changes on their network (to be more iphone friendly), and hopes to have their entire network able to do 3G on 1900mhz within a yr.
As part of the company’s previously announced $4 billion network modernization effort, T-Mobile plans to launch 4G HSPA+ service in the 1900 MHz band in a large number of markets by the end of the year

I purchased my Photon a month and a half back: secondhand from the craiglist ad. for 170 USD in Tampa.
I immideately unlocked and rooted it and flashed KDDI radio since it was only tmobile pay as you go SIM I used for my short vist to US.
It did work on T-Mobile when I was to US: thanks to KDDI Radio - needless to say it was and still is 2.3.4 and I'm stick to it.

No panic
You only flashed my rom? I am not sure, how to activate carrier service on cdma. Maybe some *228? Do you have a sim card? Did you try to flash that kddi radio?
Btw I am glad, that you can read and did not try to flash any older sbf.
it is possible I did a bunch of them for people on craigslist in NYC and Philadelphia. I dont think they had the new OTA though. I have yet to get one with the new OTA.

Yes i only flashed your rom it looked and ran really nice except my Glitch I ran into with signal. I tried a series of those combos in the dialer nothing did anything for me.......I dont have the sim in front of me as of yet i will be attempting it this weekend.........I didnt try to flash the radio.
Are you saying i should just simply try leaving the stock root on and flashing just the KDDI radio from here through bootstrap and see if that will do the trick?
I try to make sure i collect all the data i can before attempting something and I have never personally used rsd to flash so i did some research....im glad i discovered that too!
Yes. I think you can try it and if you won't have any signal or want to go back to cdma, you can just flash 2.3.5sv2 254_12 radio.
But still be ready for the worst!

** Motorola RAZR (Xt910) ** [Need Help!]

Hey guys, my friend suggested that take a look over here at the XDA community to see if I could get some help with my phone.
So, here I go, hoping to find some help so that I may be satisfied.
First off, the phone is have is the Motorola RAZR xt910. I bought the phone yesterday, used, and it was "locked to Fido".
I've already unlocked the phone and am currently running it on the Bell Network here in Canada.
Here are the problems I am facing.
Now that it is unlocked and my Bell MicroSIM is in there, I'm able to text and talk perfectly, no problems. However, after entering in the APN for Bell, and selecting it, I'm still not connecting to the 3G or 4G network. Even after a phone reboot. I had to put the Bell APN in on other phones in my past, and was able to get the internet working ... However I cannot from here.
Another problem I'm facing is that the phone is on Android 2.3.6 still. I know that with the Samsung GS2, I was able to go to settings, about phone, system updates, and it would automatically update to android 4.0.4 just like that. When I do that on this Motorola, there is an update available. I have a Update that is available. It says that an optional software update 672.180.352.en.CA is available. When I download it, it goes smooth, and copies fine. Then when I hit install update, it does the updating just like regularly... then when it gets to about a quarter.. Theres the alert triangle with an exclamation mark in the middle. It then shuts off, and reboots as normal, then states that the update failed!
In the end, can someone help me get my 3G/4G internet working on this phone, and can you help me get it to ICS.
Much appreciated, hoping someone can help!
If you need me to comply with anything such as providing information, please explain how I can do something to help you help me. Thanks!
Try get connected to wireless to get the ota update... ICS does APNs much better.

The OTA update, meaning doing the System update from going to about phone like I said I did? I have been doing that from my wireless, my 3G/4G isn't working.. So I've tried that, it stops at the first quarter like stated above.

Well if you do not have a data connection it probably won't work unless you connect using wifi. I think there would be no way to download the update without a connection. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Fastboot files for ICS aren't available yet for Fido. You can flash the gingerbread fastboot then download the ICS upgrade package for fido I posted in the Rogers thread. Good luck

Just to let you know. You've come to the right place! Just keep trying it will work!
If your still on gb, try fast boot files. Sounds like some system files or bloatware was removed, thus preventing the update.

Fido fastboot files are here : http://sbf.droid-developers.org/umt...-SLC-M33.1_P010_A003_CFC_1FF_fastboot.xml.zip
You'll need a copy of rsdlite 5.7 and the latest Motorola usb drivers to flash.

same problem,. i have the xt910 from rogers and i cant get 3g on bell network, i tried apns listed inother forums but cant seem to get this one to work... if you figure it out , any help would be greatly appreciated
---------- Post added at 02:05 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:41 AM ----------
i quickly found this solution after posting last time ... way simpler than the special apns... just name your new apn as i did
Name: bell
APN: pda.bell.ca
lol thats it ..... i know i expected to have to do so much more too... just save it select it and have fun with data, but your ics update will only work when a rogers sim is in. i think u may be able to do it via motorolas desktop software tho.

Ota updates do not check Sim card validity. You don't need a Rogers sim card in a Rogers phone to preform the update. If you are getting any update failure it is because the system files are messed up and your best solution is to fastboot the phone.

yea you might be right, but my phone wouldnt let me do it until i put it back in and it registered on the rogers network, then i downloaded via wifi. the download is a specific rogers update and bell doesnt have this phone so it may have something to do with that... just wondering if the original guy figured out the data... mms and internet work fine now

Install ICS from another region.

I bought a Razr Maxx from Amazon, it came from Hong Kong with AsiaRetail ROM, it works fine with except the encoding of music tags. I want to switch to the same Motorola's Android version but from another region (For example: US). I was reading a few procedures, but all they explains migratations from GB to ICS and I am already on ICS (673.94.328.XT910.AsiaRetail.en.03). Does anybody knows any procedure to download and install Motorola's Android stock ROM?
Thanks in advance.
You can use RSDLite to install any european ICS version. I did it in mine too, from an Asian ROM to Retail.eu (Rtail British)

Thank you so much. It worked just fine, I had issues on the first boot but I applied a factory reset and it solved.
I have 2 questions:
- Is it totally secure the sbf files from droid-developers? (I had never hear it before)
- I can't share my data conection, i don't have Internet on my computer through the phone

I really think that the sbf files are safe, there's no reason to think differently. It's not like they would put a worm on it, but I think they are pretty safe, coming from a leak.
About the data connection, did you try changing from open to WEP to WPA and so on?

Ummmm, i didn't try that, but i have connection to the gateway IP (ping), but i can't go beyond it.
I have another issue, encryption for applications and disk doesn't work, I always get a black screen and never finish the process.

Various components of the firmware need to be signed by Motorola in order to be flashable via fastboot. That's one of few pros of a locked bootloader.

Try a different set if sbf files. You may have gotten a corrupt down load. Or possibly a modded set.

Mate, you clearly don't know what are you talking about - please stop giving wrong advice. There are checksums and digital signatures in place, which are verified by RSD Lite and phone prior to flashing, thus modified/damaged file won't be accepted by the device. Only genuine files, which were signed by Motorola, can be flashed to the phone in the fastboot mode.
@rcdeoliveira: With regard to your network issue, please debug your upstream connection - e.g. TTL. This feature definitely works for me. Regarding the whole device encryption, initial run may take up a lot of time, so be sure to leave the device at the "black screen" overnight attached to a charger.
I need help. I just bought used droid razr maxx. Then When I got home, i realize it cant be rooted, something bout the su binary cant be pushed? Then I did some research, and I realize, since my razr maxx is from china,it somehow is different? Anybody know how to change this? For god sake,I cant even install some simple apps such ass foursquare?? Can I just place Any region update files in the MicroSD n update? My firmware is GAS_ASIA_SPYDERICS_P008 n System version 67.213.906.XT910.ChinaRetail.en.CN .
