Sprint won't be using WiMax after their LTE is brought up , i guess there just passing it (old tech WiMax) to Boost & Virgin which they already have contracts with anyways

End of wimax

Now that wimax is pretty dead with the new LTE contract, does that make my new 3VO obsolete?
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA Premium App
Short answer : no.
Why? Two words : backlash.
Sent from my BEASTO 3D using XDA Premium App
sprint will not be instantly switching to lte, the network still needs to be rolled out, it will probably be a few years time, all the while wimax will still be active. im sure wimax devices will start to get phased out before lte is ready to launch.
When Sprint switches to LTE will we be able to use Sprint phones on Verizon and vice versa, and have data?

Nope your phone is not going to be obsolete and wimax will be upgraded to LTE. All they have to do is swap a baseband card on their end and an OTA update for the phone.

Answer, no.. clearwire, which is the 4g Wimax, is going to piggy back off of Sprint with the LTE, which basically means that clearwire is going LTE too so the phones should work on there bands for 4g

that is to upgrade the towers to broadcast lte, our wimax radio will not receive lte. someone prove me wrong...
its my understanding after reading everything that lightsquared had a deal to use sprints network for its lte deployment and 3g roaming, they are paying sprint the money, not the other way around
Lol... People think that sprints deploying LTE when they getting money from litesquared in exchange for them using their network for testing and deploying _their_ LTE.

DoctorComrade and NewZJ are quite correct. If you read the press release about it made by Sprint (Found here: http://newsroom.sprint.com/article_display.cfm?article_id=1989) Sprint entered an agreement with LightSquared to deploy LTE basestations on Sprint's towers. This is because it is significantly cheaper for LightSquared compared to deploying their own towers and network.
With this agreement, Sprint has the option to purchase bandwidth from LightSquared in the future, if they decide to.

From what I have read, no. As I understand it, the frequencies used for LTE and WiMax are part of the old analog TV spectrum. When the US switched to digital all those frequencies were auctioned off. Different carriers now own different parts of the spectrum and their phones need chips tuned to those particular frequencies. The lower end of the spectrum has the best building penetration and sold for the most money, that's the part that Verizon bought. As for whether they can make chips that switch depending on strongest signal, I don't know. As for whether cell providers will make deals allowing roaming on each others LTE networks, I don't know. As I said I could be wrong about this whole thing, this is just my understanding from the info I've read on the subject.
Wimax is 2000+ mhz, Verizon LTE is 700ish mhz
So no roaming, Wimax was said to be its upgradable to LTE via ota push
sent from the moon
wimax and lte can be any frequency, verizon happens to have approval for ~750, att ~700, sprint ~2400. fcc must approve the usage and sprint neither has the approval or spectrum to do it lower unless they give up iden (~800-850) and then get approval but nextel ptt is still popular

I'm pretty sure the frequency for LTE is dependent on the frequencies each carrier has purchased the rights to. I believe the reason WiMax is 2000+ and Verizon LTE is 700 is because that's the part of the spectrum that each company owns, not some inherent requirement for each technology.
Edit: NewZJ beat me to it.

Sprint 4G plans (FD-LTE & TD-LTE 2012)

http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/27/sprints-lte-build-out-already-underway-new-4g-network-to-launc/
I admit, I wasn't expecting both, but this makes me wonder if this is the nail in the coffin coming MUCH sooner for WiMax, as TD-LTE is on Clear's roadmap. Anyway I'm glad 2012 is the time-frame for launch.
In a a few weeks we will know all of this officially.

It'll probably be mentioned in the October announcement.
Rev. B would make sense to those with WiMax phones that have Rev. B supporting chips, once (if?) WiMax gets decommissioned during the TD-LTE upgrade.
EVDO Rev B is still more than likely on the timeline. We'll probably find out more about it at their conference on the 7th

I have had the epic 4g, the evo 3d, and my dad has the og evo and we both have not experienced it, even though we pay for it. Sprint really pisses me the **** off, Ik thousands more can agree. So now they wanna start lte, are they gonna release one tower every year, then switch to a new 4g system? I'm considering gettn out my contract and goin to vzw

Even though you do grow to love and miss it when your not using it, 4G only comes in handy when your tethering an Xbox or you need to download big files. Especially since the sense roms are huge on the 3D. Other than that, with a few proxy tweaks 3G would do the job.

Umm, have you been under a rock? That's what they're doing.
Evdo Rev. B will be all you need.
I have WiMax at it's best (see my obnoxious sig?) so trust me when I say, it's nothing to get butt-hurt over. It's ok.
Go into an office building, mall, college etc. It's very unreliable over the frequency they have it on.

just so you know lte is NOT faster than wimax, and wimax is NOT faster than lte. They depend on so many other things like the freq they are put on and how they are implemented out. You take FD-LTE and put it on the freq clearwire is currently usig for wimax and we all would see the SAME speeds we do now and get the same exact coverage.
the only thing the get happy about would be them putting LTE or even WiMax on the old Nextel freq.
The thing is with this though that they can't really do that till they shut it off and boot the nextel subs on iden off to the new cdma ptt they are rolling out. Thing is they have just recently or very soon to be coming out with the first phones capable of even doing so.
This is why the mtg will be interesting in october. If they have figured a way to let IDEN and LTE both exist and be on, on the 800MHz band then they could roll it out and turn it on sooner. BUT if thats not the case they clearly stated the phase out of IDEN isn't supposed to start till 2013.

Sprint Reps aren't reliable sources.
The Sprint smartphones that are capable of EVDO Rev.B:
HTC Arrive
HTC EVO 4G
HTC EVO 3D
Kyocera Echo
HTC EVO Shift
Motorola Triumph (Virgin Mobile)
Samsung Conquer 4G
I'd hope the Motorola Photon & Epic Touch were capable but I have no information on it.

Depends on where you are...If you get lucky, you can catch a tower that is being tested, but this is not normal. They should not be "live", but upon occasion you can get one in the network vision upgrade areas.
I had one for about 35 minutes in central Wisconsin last week (and they still havent disabled WiMax after over a month). It just pops up and goes dark.
Something tells me the LTE towers are going to light up in quick order as the towers upgrades get finished in staged areas.

if I'm not mistaken, certain areas in Texas will be the first to officially have LTE when it is deployed. In the network settings, you have the option to either use 3G/4G lte or just 3G cdma. I'd switch to just 3G for the time being. WiMax will be around until the end of 2015 as Sprint still has a contractual agreement with Clearwire, their current 4G WiMax provider.

Ever since they turned on LTE here in June I think I've had a LTE signal for a total of 20min. I talked to a sprint rep recently and was told that Sprint won't truly be finished with the Dallas LTE until sometime in 2013. Each city they do a roll out just means they started in that city(1 LTE tower)

Don't get too exited. Sprints LTE is a joke. I live in Dallas where they first rolled out LTE and I got the HTC Evo 4G LTE on day one.

Have you tried the LTE on another device? I thought it was a joke as well until I saw the real network with a phone that doesn't have LTE connectivity issues.
