OK, my Flyer power button is broken. A quick dissection of the board shows that the casing around the actual switch (not button) has broken away. A manual press on the metal disc that makes the contact switches the device on - and I have now found a new power/ear jack board and white cover to replace them. But, in the meantime is there an app that I can use to wake the device or a button remapper that can turn the volume control into a power switch, or even a pen press?
Shake awake doesn't exist. Tap Tap won't work without a proximity sensor....
At the moment the best I can do is plug it into a USB port....not terribly good on the move!
Many thanks,
Christof

O man, were you able to find a replacement for that little circuit board around the power switch? My brother has the exact same problem with his flyer and I'm trying to help him locate a replacement part. I would greatly appreciate any leads you can give me on getting parts.

Does anyone know of an App that can wake up the prime from sleep mode without having to press the power button?
Having to press the power button to wake the screen is a real problem. It causes unnecessary wear on the Power button. I do not feel confortable having to press the power button every time I need to wake it. This will certainly wear out the mechanical button-
Finding an App that can wake the display by touching the screen, or even tapping the volume button would be better than having the power button fail in 3 months.
Anyone have any workarounds?
Thanks!!!

I soooooo would not worry about this.
Of course there is no app that allows the phone to wake when the screen is off by touching the screen. Can you imagine? Ugh.
And your worried about the power button but not worried about the volume button which you would then double (at a minimum) it's usage and workload?
bump
I see ur issue..I hada nexus one and the power button failed..hope it didn't happen to tis tab.
Well i know Ezekiel made a mod for the Nexus S kernel called "Touch wake" allowing the touchscreen to stay on, even if the screen is off. Touching the screen withing a customizable amount of time (1 minute) after the screen turned off would turn it back on. So it is possible, once custom kernels come out..
Another option is a thread in the development sections. A person there is a attempting to create an app that wakes the prime by shaking it. I also believe widgetlocker has a setting to wake on volume button press.
Seriously though, I doubt you will have a problem with the power button.
Here is a video of how HTC stress tested the Nexus One before it was released: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1sz5c-R9h0
Now obviously ASUS isn't HTC, but I'd imagine all companies stress test their products in a similar way before they release them, thus I'm sure the Prime's power button has been tested and proven to last through the normal usage of it.
If you get the keyboard there is a setting that you can toggle(in the stock rom) to wake it up when you touch a key.
Note: it does affect battery life though

Download an app called Widget Locker. It will replace your lock screen but there is an option in the settings that allow you to wake up your tablet by using the volume rocker. That way you can alternate between physical buttons.

Wouldn't feel that confident about the prime's buttons. Volume button on mine already feel weird after a month with it (have to press volume up harder...)

I'm personally not concerned about the power button...however, I would still like a feature as the one described here (shake to wake). However, it would need to be accompanied by a widget or means to enable / disable on the fly because in order to do this, you would need to keep your device in partial wake state even if the screen is off which in turn may lead to unexpected battery usage.
I see this as handy for those instances when you are going between tablet and other things and back to tablet (which i find myself doing often)....I'd want to enable during those times and disable when not necessary.
I didn't see the thread in the dev section so if someone wouldn't mind pointing me to it, I'd appreciate it.
Guys, The reason why I started this thread was because I see in other threads this has already been a problem with the original transformer power button (the only way users could wake the display was by plugging the tablet in to charge)
Also, these contacts inside the power buttons that most manufacturers use in the tablets are not the best quality micro switches. Repetitive usage could possibly kill them quickly. (Go check the Acer Iconia A500 forums!) I don't feel very confident of their longevity.
One great thing about Honeycomb and ICS, is that it does away with most of the mechanical buttons. The biggest point of failure that still remains on these tablets is the mechanical power switch.
I set my tablet to sleep after 5 minutes without use so that it does not drain the battery, but I don't wan't to wind up RMA'ing this thing back to Asus if there is a way to prevent it. I will try some of the recommendations provided. I really do hope that this is something that is looked into by the developers. Keep the suggestions coming! and thank you all!
Mom always said if you keep playing with it , it will fall off... lol

Good god how hard are you pressing the screen? It only needs a gentle touch or caress
If you don't want to press/touch you screen, I would highly recommend getting the dock. A stylus will apply even more pressure than the average finger. You won't have to touch the screen at all once you get the dock. If you are worried you are gonna wear out and stop/break the touchpad, get an external usb mouse.
If you are afraid of wearing out or breaking an external mouse, well then I am out of ideas.
Would it be possible, and has anyone made, a mod to require a double press or long press of the power button for screen on? I have had my 3d since launch day and I finally can't take it anymore, nothing is more irritating than pulling my phone out of my pocket and the screen is already on and I have no battery left.
Screen time out? Never had that issue... Volume rocker wake? Idk

Hello,
you can try this mod
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1334871
I use the fully LeeDroid ROM and there you can set the volume buttons or the camera button for unlock the screen. So you won't have your problem with the power button any more
Anyone else have this issue? When I short press the power button to turn off the screen, it sometimes looks like it's going to turn the screen off then turns back on to the lock screen.
This has caused me all kinds of pocket dialing / pocket shortcut making / pocket emailling issues.
I THINK this issue might be caused by the Screebl app (app that keeps screen on when being held) since I can't replicate it with it off. I really would like to use it though because it's a really useful app. Any suggestions?
I can't half press my power button. It just turns off when I apply little pressure
Must be an isolated issue

It's not a half press. It's a short press (vs long press - which would bring up the power menu to shut down, restart, etc). It turns the screen off, then it blinks back on to the lock screen, but seemingly only when Screebl is enabled. Might just have to drop that app, but I'd rather not because it's damn useful.

Your last paragraph seems as if you've already isolated the problem. Unfortunately, I think you know your only choice. I'd consider contacting the creator of the app.

If i do a very quick short press with netflix open it brings me to the lock screen. no big deal
Hey, I just wanted to confirm that this is not just isolated to your phone. I have had this issue with two phones so far, a Samsung Vibrant and an HTC One S. I've been looking for an answer as well, but so far turning off Screebl has been the only solution. Sucks because I love Screebl.
My Power button quit working yesterday. I am trying to remap my volume button to wake the screen, and be the new power button. I can't seem to get it to work. I am rooted and I am using root explorer to edit the text.
I have found a number of apps that will wake my screen and some of them work okay, but I have to have lock screen enabled because of my corporate email, and once the screen locks, the apps don't work.
Also, I am worried that if my phone ever get's powered down (runs out of battery), I don't know how I would turn it back on.
Any advice???

I need a physical button. I'm rooted on Gingerbread and I want to update to ics but I can't figure out how to fastboot without a physical power button
There's a few apps in the store like 'quickboot' that'll allow you to boot into fastboot if rooted. Just remember for menus like recovery, you're likely to be stuck once you need to use the power button to select an option

Send it to service to get it repaired. It's pretty cheap for repairing a single button.
my htc amaze has a broken power button and would flash on and off unless i take out the battery. the power button is gone, but the power sensor is still there. the phone will stay on if i push on the power sensor correctly.
you guys have any advice on fixing this and how much would it cost to repair?
thanks a bunch
have you checked on ebay for any repair parts?

It won't be able to, since the power button is assigned to turn on the device. There's one way I know of that you can use to turn the phone on when it's off. It requires a computer though.
You will need 4ext recovery installed. After that, have the phone connected to a computer and then (assuming you have adb drivers set up) type in the following command:
adb reboot
That should boot up the phone.

Sorry for the delay in answer. You can map the power button to whatever button you like. It does turn the phone off and on. I will act exactly as the power button does.

That's incorrect. Once the cam button is mapped as a power button, it will behave exactly as the power button.

No it doesn't behave like a power button. Sure it can wake the device and put it to sleep, but it CAN NOT power up the device once it's off. The power button sends a different kind of signal when the phone is off, and cannot be remapped with software means. It's a hardware button that tells the phone to turn on.
Before you go and tell me that it's not true, I even tested it out myself just to be sure and yep, it doesn't power on the device once it's off.

I stand corrected. I thought he was talking about stand-by off. I also tested if the button works to power on the device and you are correct, it doesn't work.
To the OP. My power button does work if I remove the battery case and press the spot where the battery case button would make contact with the phone. It would seem to be a problem with the button making contact with the phone.
