[Q] To buy or not to buy a new one - Sony Xperia P, U, Sola, Go

Well I have seen similar discussions in different threads but there's a wide range of different opinions among many threads so I thought it would be nice to have a generl opinion in just one thread.
The thing is, I bought the Xperia S sim-locked and BL locked and unlockable. I have found a friend that may want to buy it sim-unlocked for 350€, and I can get a new cellphone at amazon for 420€.
The question is: What's the most experienced developers opinion on the locked BLs? I read many people are saying that we should wait while others say it will be impossible.
It's a bother to sell it and get a new one shipped from Germany to Spain, but thanks to this great community and its ROMs, I can keep the X10 alive (and planning to keep it alive for another year or two!) and it would be a pity if I had to throw away the Xperia S because I can't improve it at all. On the other hand, if I decide to wait the price will drop and I will loose even more money.
So what's your opinion? Thanks in advance for the help

Wait until ICS is released, then see if any exploits are found. No one wants to mess with GB when ICS is around the corner.

What's happening with handtec.co.uk ?

Guys, who all have got sgs2 today as promised by handtec in uk ?
R u guys happy with their delivery service ? Why no one has posted their new experience with this phone ?
One strange thing is bugging me, eventhough sgs2 is such a popular device around the world, why handtec still has huge stock left ? Is it because they have too much of stock or no one except few crazy people like me have bought it from them ?
I mean this is very strange for handtec, as new device gets released arlest we have to wait for min 1 month until we get the devices in stock. Atleast that's what happened to me last year when I ordered htc desire...
I guess the reason could be because of the samsung's thoughtful plan of releasing it throughout the world at the same time or around a minimum duration.
Or it might be because of lack of NFC which is preventing people from buying it online from uk ??? I think it's the least cause for the people to do it that way for such a master piece in the whole mobile industry till today....
This is what I guess whenever I see " in stock next day delivery" on their website now....
Anyone could possibly know what's the genuine reason for handtec still having the stocks in ???
no its because handtec is HUGE and they ordered a huge supply..

I just hope there is stock left at the end of the week. Because if AT&T/Samsung do not announce the S II U.S. launch date at their press conference Thursday, I will be ordering from UK.
It sounds like they are launching in 120 countries this week and next so I assume they made sure to have plenty of stock.
Any chance of them reducing the price of sgs2 to promote the sales ?
If it's like that, then I am here to wait for another 2 wks..... You know competition is always good for customer....
Samsung has really done a great job by decentralizing the availability of their master piece till date.....
I think it's foolishness tobexpect the price drop atlasest for another 3 months....
My bad..... I will order for one from them.... It would have been nice if the UK model carried NFC chip along with it.... Too bad that samsung played a dirty trick to boost their sales figures.....
Hmm.... Pls don't repeat this trend samsung.... No one likes it .....
Can we have some unboxing pics & new hands on experience from UK buyers.... Pls many people here like me are dying to see this sexy showing off it's true collies until we all have one in our hands.... Pls.... It's a request to those who have already bought it... Tease us with pics, not by just asking or commenting about new feature or doubts..... We as fed up of seeing those threads with questions about new features & unknown things about sgs2.....
Come on guys..... Do us some favour by posting things what we would like to see here....
it is actually a interesting question, why wouldn't they have stock?
They know how many are pre-ordered and they just got it from samsung, that's it
After all handtec is a big business, I trust their ability to fulfill all pre-orders and having a handful handsets left for sale.
Yeah I hope so.... Over a period of years they must have learnt s lesson on his to stay ahead in the market with many new competitors introduced.....
Actually it's a good thing gig them as well as for us....
I wish they have enough stick till I order one for me from them... way to go handtec.... Keep it up
Also I am dying to see someone post screen shots of unboxing & hands on review pls ... Only pics would suffice our desires to see this beauty flying in colours....
you'll have to wait for tomorrow for that...

Sad at how inactive this section of the XDA forums are. When presented with the opportunity to get a Galaxy Tab 8.9 or an HTC Jetstream for cheaper, I feel I should've first spent some time scoping out the modding community on these tablets before committing to a purchase. Why is HTC Jetstream development dead when we have unlocked bootloaders and root? Are we waiting for something to happen or just developers? Just even more users in general, perhaps?
I am an active developer/programmer with 5+ languages under my belt, products including Android/iPhone apps, but I've never attempted kernel and/or ROM development and honestly wouldn't know where to start.
Would love for ICS to be on this beast... it's still very nice hardware. Not as slim as the Galaxy Tab, but still a beast.
the main problem is that when the device was new it was expensive. so very little people actually bought it.
the community was tiny, but we got two developers to come. task650 and doomlord.
they mainly came because there a was a bounty for rooting the device. after that occured, they vanished. can't blame them.
i think that now there are alot more users but none of which are developers.
so we're screwd. perhapes HTC will be nice enough to update the device to ICS one day...
I still check in here everyday, but am never surprised to see that nothing new is there. I do remember capychimp had popped in and said he wanted to do a rom, but I never heard anything back from him.
At&T software update at the end of january is very helpful. Doomlord help a lot with root and recovery, kernel. We have got unlocked bootloader. I've paid almost 900$ to got this device from AT&T without contract with scribe pen and I unlocked it for 25$ so I was able to use here in my country Hungary, successfully rooted, updated, debloated. Now HTC please update to 3.2 or ICS. Or somebody please make s-off
Galaxy tab 10.1 3G 16gb is 500$ simfree here in my country so Jetstream for 900$ very expensive
Galaxy tab 8.9 3G 440$ sim free
Like galaxy s2 is 500$

Well, I am a capable and willing developer, but I also have a full time job. And I understand the bounty, don't blame them either. I don't require the bounty for motivation though for getting ICS on this since I own it. I just don't believe I could set aside enough time or have enough know-how around custom ROM development to lead a project. Though, like I said, very willing to help.
Did it sound like this capychimp was willing to lead a project?

Eek, $900 is very expensive... I got it in a deal where you could get a Galaxy S2 Skyrocket for free if you got the Galaxy Tab 8.9. Asked if it applied to the HTC Jetstream as well, and they agreed. So I got that one instead since it was a bit cheaper, under contract of course.

Seems Task650 and CarpeNoctem have released their custom roms. May be you could break heads with them and help bring out a really good release and may be even try out for ICS. Here is hoping for the best.
I got the Jetstream for $699 off contract as bought it on Black Friday sale. Getting it sim free costed me $25 - so in all spent $724 which amounts to close to Rs. 36000 as I live in India. Spent another Rs. 8000 ($ 40) for the screen gaurd and a gel case though. Comparing it with Galaxy Tab that was available around same time for Rs. 33000 ($660), I still find the Jetstream a big bargain considering its specs and the Scribe pen which has been a big boon for me. Yes of course have to wait for upgrades, etc which can get frustrating but I really do not mind as even the stock device solved a lot of my time and helped a lot. Anything more is like a bonus. Thanks to HTC for this wonderful device and thanks to all the developers in the community who are trying their best to make this device even better than it is.

Yes very expensive. I bought it last year October almost after official luanch from AT$T retail store. I live in Hungary so I need it without commitment. I paid 849$ + tax for it and I didnt got the free scribe pen I paid 25 for the unlock and I use it here in Hungary and worked perfectly for me.
Im worked for a GSM service company. We will repair, service, update, unlock, cell phones and much more so I will bought the scribe pen and accessories from my wholesealer very cheap and Im very happy with my tablet but software support is a little bit dissapointing for me:S I hope soon we will get ICS or some OS upgrade.
Waiting for S-OFF!!!!
I think ICS will put this tablet to Heaven Strong hadware, good screen...

[Q] Still No .73 UK Generic Update?

I have a white unranded Xperia S and have still not recieved the generic .73 update.... Has anyone else yet? Why is this taking so long? Its been out for over a month in singapore and nothing yet in the UK on unbranded Xperia S devices.... I used to have a HTC Desire which got timely updates.
Not impressed. It feels like all Sony have done is re brand Sony/Ericsson who used to be shocking for stuff like this.
Positive thinking, maybe they skip .73 and go for ICS.
I gave up. If you're itching to try one of the .73 FWs, just get one from the Dev section and flash it. You don't need to unlock the bootloader unless you want a prerooted one.
Sony UK really dropped the ball on this one, I think.
Sorry guys, I really dont mean to sound so negative. Its a fantastic phone and in all honesty so far its been great apart from battery life. I know the .73 firmware addresses this.
I really dont want to Root my phone etc just so I can get the firmware. I think Sony should have released it in the UK, my thinking is maybe Sony has not released it because ICS is just around the corner. If not that im not happy at all.
Look at the Playstation 3 and Playstation Vita. They update those devices fast, ok I know its not a Phone but maybe Sonys mobile devision could learn a thing or two from their games console devision.

I suppose the question he is asking is ' if the .73 update improves something as fundamental as battery life, then why oh why have Sony mobile UK refused to release it especially when it's available for branded kits. It just brings back bad memories of the X10 and we hoped all that was history now.
I personally believe the phone should never have been released with gingerbread. I just cannot understand the reasoning behind this move and I'm sorry Sony are just add guilty as Ericsson for this. Rebranding or not.
A phone that could have really taken off once again has been given a handicap by very poor executive decision making. Again a throw back to the x10 days. If ICS wasn't ready by the proposed launch date then they should have delayed the launch rather than releasing the phone with software that the community doesn't care about anymore.
It just shows that the company, Sony included, just haven't got it that android sells these phone and not the stuff they do no matter how good that might be.
A shame because the phone despite its cheaper price is in my opinion currently the best thing on the market.
The big retailers like amazon and play have just refused Sony's recommended retail price of £460 because of the poor poor performance of the phones released last year. Who can blame them. The xperia s will just have to clean up the sales mess left behind by the arc, play, and all the other ridiculous devices they flooded the market with last year.
It beggars belief that Sony should find themselves in any way shape or form competing with HTC, Samsung, and the other Korean and Chinese manufacturers.
On a hardware level despite its older CPU, the xperia is much quicker than all others which proves the point that when it comes to electronics, made in Japan is better than made in Korea, Taiwan, and China. No offence to the rest but the Taiwanese and Chinese are still very much up and coming.
What they do however is understand the android community much better than Sony.
Sony seem to think we are like apple consumers which couldn't be further from the truth. There in lies their problem.

Hi K900, thanks for the reply but I would rather use official update channels which for some reason have not happened in the UK. A bit of a silly move considering the Xperia S is selling bucket loads in the UK at the moment.

Yes I agree it seems very illogical. I came from a HTC Desire which had some really fast updates and Sony to me seems highly odd, considering the .73 firmware fixes battery issues.
The phone has taken of by the way, its selling very well across the world but Sony could help by releasing firmware that its possibly very important to everyone.
As for the processor and the Phone it was all designed in europe including the processors and stuff. All sony did was remove the ericsson moniker and make then use better hardware.
ICS is apparently out as early as a week away, if your phone is locked down to a network it maybe longer due to bloatware. This may not happen but reading stuff on here and twitter its looking very likely. Android versions arnt what sells a phone the most to consumers, its the screen, the design of the Phone, the camera and yea im sure the Android version helps but its not a huge thing. I really hope this is just a bedding in period with Ericsson now being trained how to make Sony phones properly.
I think its a fantastic phone and with the correct leadership from Sony could be bigger yet (sales).

I think it's more down to the user than anything...personally as someone who isnt a frequent user of their phone (mainly due to the fact that I use a tab), I find it quite disappointing how quick the battery drains...even in standby mode.

The phone is doing well as far as sales goes but that's because the HTC devices have been disappointing. Once the galaxy s3 is launched. All that would change as things stand. Sony need to make sure ICS is ready before the s3 launch

Hi, hope you don't mind me asking. I've just upgraded my old X10 Mini Pro and should be receiving the Xperia S in a couple of days. I've been looking at .73 threads in the Dev section and they tend to imply an unlocked bootloader. e.g http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1571396
Needless to say I'm somewhat confused! Can I flash the above with a locked bootloader?

You can flash an original official FW, so replace stock UK with stock SG(Singapore) for example. But this wont get you root, unfortunately.

Yeah, I think I'd have to flash something like DoomKernel to get root? I'm still struggling with the learning curve with the Xperia S and still can't see the wood for the trees!
At this point the first thing I'm aiming to do is improve battery life, which .73 seems to do for many people.
Just had an email from Sony UK saying the .73 firmware will be out sometime this week. Makes me think ICS will be a long wait if it takes so long to release a simple firmware update.

[Q] Buy a no-contract locked phone and then unlock it or buy the I9100?

Hello. I'm going to write a long and detailed post, so please hear me out.
My current cellphone provider is switching from CDMA to GSM in mid 2013 so I might as well get a shiny new GSM phone while I'm at it (some of you may even be able to guess which provider I'm with). I'm way too poor to afford an S3 so that's out of the picture.
My question is if it's better to buy an ATT or TMo S2 and then unlock it or just buy the unlocked S2 instead. It's certainly cheaper and the specs look better (though I honestly have no idea how big of a difference 1.2ghz and 1.5ghz is).
My next question is what is the best rom for the I9100 in terms of best performance and least bugs? I'm not really looking for something that will give me a plethora of more features but I want something that's not stock. I really just want a rom that never lags... ever (like if I ever decide to play a graphically intense game and then press the home button, it would go there in half a second). I looked over the dev forums and it's just too overwhelming. There's way too many options and I don't understand half of what their features are. Like Devo said, "Freedom from choice is what want."
You're in the wrong place. Your thread should either be in AT&T Skyrocket Q&A or T-Mobile Q&A.
Both of these phones have their own fora.
Report your post by clicking the triangle with the ! in the right hand corner of your OP & ask mods to move it to one of these fora. That way you'll get answers from people who actually have one of these phones.

LG mobile let me down!!!!

I have owned lg g4 and im still actually, the funy thing is not a single update not even one scurity update since i bought it (september 2016) . LG promized Nougat though..
I gave LG another chance with LG G6 purshased last march i was surprised to find a flagship still runing on nougat while other start reciving android p beta..
I have recived a majore 20a and minore 20b update since then witch is good, but apparently it is still not smooth ( korea first and then region x and then region y and then model xy...etc witch takes ages to reach some countries. and some region/ model are completely ignored..?
The bottom line is LG produce brilliant phones but if software support is not provided at least to flagships for 2 years customers will runaway and LG will lose money as they did the recent years and this year (Lg mobile)
I have read this today about oneplus:
https://www.xda-developers.com/oneplus-3-oneplus-3t-android-p-update/
Without forgeting nokia and others witch Lg must take exemple if it dosnt want to sink.
Rambling on an internet forum isn't gonna make a phone company listen to you. We've heard it countless times. Call customer service, tweet at them, or do something else about it if it matters that much to you.
Or just don't buy their products. Period.
***for LG updates are important to me and LG skipped them im still on nougat and there is no official new from LG customers care team regarding for next update
LOL.
They support is like a low price phone not a flagship

Rambling on an internet forum isn't gonna make a phone company listen to you. We've heard it countless times. Call customer service, tweet at them, or do something else about it if it matters that much to you.
Or just don't buy their products. Period.

He answered like this because this matter has been discussed a lot already, many people, like me, have been disappointed, but i didn't only come here to complain, i also complained to them for months on twitter and via E-Mails, and i won't buy an LG devices ever again, moreover all the people around me will know my experience and i'll try to keep them fro buying LG phones.
These are all things that have (or may have) real effects on LG, complain here is useless i'm afraid, if you don't believe just check all the threads that have been created on the Oreo update, or the updates in general since last summer where all begun, and if you bought a G6 after last summer, well, you should have known how LG behaves on software updates and shouldn't have bought it.
Have a nice day, meanwhile i'll wait to throw this ****ty G6 away to buy a sparkly red OnePlus 6

It doesn't matter if it's low-priced device or a flagship - both of these segments should be treated equally. Remember that Nokia 2 or Nokia 3 are not very powerful, they may be treated as low-priced ones but ALL HMD-Nokia devices are getting P. I tried to defend LG to the very last moments but right now I know that G6 is my last LG phone ever. I will be looking for a company which cares for their products instead of just releasing them, I will wait a little bit for Gorilla Glass 6, newer processor, some other inventions and then buy something.

Right on the money, sir.
To the OP, apologies for my blatantly sarcastic response, but with all due respect, this doesn't seem to be a matter worth discussing since it's been heard countless times before (and I mean countless, do a google search and you'll find tons of threads like these).
I didn't intend to criticize you or be rude to you in any way, so please accept my apology. You're right. I can't control what you do. Just be mindful that this isn't the first time we've seen someone complain about how lousy of a company LG is. We're all on the same boat here, and we all suffer equally from LG's mediocrity
