If you own the Sony Xperia S and are bored of the white LED transparent strip then check out some of the pictures below. People are hardware modding their handsets by swapping the white LED for various colours including purple, pink, green, blue, orange and red.
To do this involves taking your handset apart and soldering a small PCB, therefore there is no doubt that doing this will invalidate your warranty. This mod won’t mimic the Xperia U, whose LED light changes colours depending on the screen content, but it does look pretty cool regardless.

So what do you think is true or fake?
Mmmmmmmmm , I think it's a fake cause multiocolor led has 3 leads(for bicolor) and 4 leads (for rgb led) , so you need to have from 3 leads to 4 leads for each led , but in my opinion xperia S doesn't has 3 or 4 leads cause it doesn't serve at nothing cause xperia need only 2 leads for single color led
FAKE
I wouldn't call it fake though, I use to mod electronics alots, and change led is a simple task as to cut out the led and solder a new led onto it.
However, the problem that kept people from installing new led, most probably because 1: they don't understand circuitry, 2: don't have tools and steady hand, 3: and most importantly, affraid of ruining $600 phone.
And the picture above with different led color is most likely from different phone, phone A = red, phone B=blue....what you say above is most likely true, there's probably 2 or 3 connector per led.

I didn't see any reference in the first post that implies these are multi-coloured LED'S
What I did read was that these LED's have been installed to REPLACE the original white LEDs.
I read it to mean that 1 colour LED was selected and that was used to replace the originals.
And...The first post clearly states that these LEDs DO NOT change colour like those on the Xperia U.
I have changed LED's on electronics before and so long as you have a fine bit soldering iron and a steady hand, it aint so difficult.
Saying that, would you risk taking your £500 handset to pieces just to change some LED's?
I did notice that pic 3 and 4 are the same phone and they both have an LED out, so I'm going for these pics are real and the process is not beyond a lot of peoples capabilities. Although I still think they are SMD's and not LED's.
Genuine thing, here is an article from xperia blog

Its true not fake.
Only thing is that you need to open phone and replace leds with collor leds which you want or some pisce of plastig colored bag (from konzum, lidl) etc over white leds and will give you colored effect...
Here is watch my video on youtube with an older phone but you will se the 3-4 years old trick how it works...

Colored led also in Xperia P?
Do you guys think this could work also on Xperia P? I mean what i have seen is that the buttons in the stripe has light in them.

Guys, what about a clear tape strip, which we all use on a daily basis, taped over the led strip.
After that, you can paint it with a permanent marker. Just for testing purposes.
I use a transparent rubber cover on my Xperia S and could easily paint it and remove the paint.
This all doesn't void warranty ( meaning not more than my bootloader unlocking )

Won't take a chance.......but prolly after my warranty, i'll DIY. ;D

Hi all.
Im back again to show off my LED swap for the Evo 3D along with some comparison pics of the Evo 4G and Hero LED swap.
I changed not only the bottom LEDs but also the charge LEDs to blue/white
The Evo 4G wasn's as nice as the 3D as the LEDs didn't shine through as nicely but here are some pics for you to check out

Thank you all,
yea most my friends dont know why i open stuff the second i get them to tweak them out. lol
as for a tutorial its pretty strait forward take the phone apart, and their are 2 boards with LEDs, on them the top and bottom.
unsolder the old LEDs and solder in the new ones
their is a video on youtube i just found if you cant take apart the phone, even though its pretty simple, 6 screws, pop the case apart and another 2 on the inside holding down the top board with the camera. you also have to take out some ribbon cables and such to remove the motherboard of the Evo.
If you are not familiar with soldering SMD components then i do not suggest this is for you.
the top board is actually a flex board which you can damage pretty easily.
On the flex board is a single bi-color LED in which i just swapped out for 2 single color LEDs
M37R01D, great post! Thank you.
The mod looks great but soldering on that scale is still a little intimidating, to me
I found a great video on soldering surface-mount devices:
Dayum! That white LED in the Hero is tits.
The first part of that video with the 0603 size resistor they solder is the same size as the LEDs needed for this.
But look more on desoldering as that part is a bit harder and their is more risk screwing up the solder pads then the actual installation of the LEDs

I did that with my old blackberry curve, I colored the LEDs red with a Sharpie to match the housing, so I had red back lighting on the keyboard. This looks way cool, but warranty is now void right?
I'd pick red or amber to its not as bright.

Hi,
I got my S2 a couple days back and was watching a movie in a completely darkroom and noticed that the screen wasn't truly black when the title were playing. I initially thought it was an issue with movie so I tested the screen with a pure black screen (*#0*#) and noticed that the screen glowing a tad lighter than black and I had several black patches on the screen. This is extremely annoying when using apps that have a lot of black or when watching movies. the dark patches and streak is also noticeable in the clock app in the dark grey patterned lower area. I have seen this issue mentioned in another post but there is no definitive answer as to whether this problem can be fixed or goes away after some usage. I would just like to know if I should send this in for replacement? What are my other options?
I also noticed that my 3 day old phone already had slight notification bar burn ins and even my google search widget seems to be burning in to the screen. Honestly I am extremely disappointed with these QC issues and this is my second unit as I had the first replaced for other screen issues.
I'd return it now for a NEW replacement, before the time expires. After a certain timeframe, only repair warranty most likely available, and that will probably take longer.
In some cases, it could be only 1 week.

ya I have a 30 day replacement offer so I guess I will be using that. Hope I'm lucky the third time around.
You may already know this, but;
If you send it back and your phone is rooted, custom rom etc, ensure you flash back stock firmware and get a usb jig to reset the samsung custom flash counter and remove warning triangle.

Edit/update
Im on Gingerbread 2.3.3 XWKF3 (India)
If someone could please try this simple test and let me know their results, I would be very grateful.
Test Procedure:
- Find a completely dark room (easier at night)
- goto phone keypad and dial *#0*#
- tap the button that says Black (Vibration)
- now look directly at the screen for a few seconds and let your eyes adjust
At this point do you see?
a) pure black (cannot distinguish btw bezel and screen),
b) an even mild glow, sort of like a backlight
c) a glow along with patches/blotches of pure black?
I see option (c). Could some of you pls do this test and let me know your results. This problem can also be seen, under the same dark conditions, if the clock app is opened. If you have the same problem I have, then you should see dark patches in the grey area.
I tried out before my last reply, but in dim (not dark) conditions, seemed ok.
Now tried as you suggested, and let my eyes adjust for a few second, I can see what your saying.
Maybe this its part of the super amloed + screen?
So in short , I'll take answer C

Maybe more users realise they have through same (or to a degree) , but i suppose if there is no noticeable difference during day to day use (including movies etc), i wouldn't even bother.
In your case, i'd still go with the return for new. No guarantee though...

Photo
Well here's a photo to better demonstrate my issue. It is a little exaggerated by the camera but still pretty accurate. One can also see that the glow has a reddish tint. It was taken with a DSLR in hi res. You can see just how bad it is. Yes this is not that noticeable if the room isn't really dark but it's pretty damn bad in my room with all the lights out. And thats how I usually read at night. I wouldn't even mind an even glow but the splotches are unacceptable.
Ok your screen is clearly a QC fail. Go and exchange it ASAP. The screen does have a faint glow because it needs to be powered, but it should be a VERY faint and even glow perceptible only in pitch black conditions.

If you look carefully inside the Galaxy S2 headphone jack you may spot part of the motherboard. I don't know if this is normal or a manufacturing defect. I've compared a couple of other S2's, but it is too hard to tell due to the accumulation of dust particles. Please shed some light on this for me. Thank you.
Nope, can't see any part of motherboard through headphones' jack, just metal.

mine is blue, but it has a serious problem with the display, blotches and some uniformity issue. made in korea, go figure, lol. you can check your country of manufacture under the battery on the back of the phone. if there is one thing I can conclude based on the last 3 other replacements I got, I can confirm that the chinese production is better. fewer users are reporting problems with the chinese batches.
Blue is made in korea, green is made in china.

Not necessarily, I saw a blue (made in china) in the may batch and made in korea (green) in that same time. Off-topic, Let me assure you, the china batch has fewer problems than korea and china has latest camera firmware (SCEF09) whereas very few korea stocks are available that has the older firmware (OMEF01).
On-topic, can you see part of your motherboard in the headphone jack?
is seeing the motherboard within the headphone jack a normal thing?
my usb cable is made in Indonesia, I have a chinese one as well, oddly, there are some quality control issues.
the chinese build is more resilient than koreas
the display is worse on korea (all based on my experience in the past few replacements I came across)

i'm really keen to know whats up with the production line of some samoled displays
Here is a view of the inside of my phone.
The microphone jack is the blueish rectangle sligthly up to the left of the camera lens.
So the blue parts ppl see is probably the the jack itself as it seems to be sealed from the rest of the mainboard, probably to protect the inside from dirt and such.
Your motherboard is blue.
If it was true green, it would be darker (like Forest Green color as per my observations with my first replacement).
I do see the difference though from top to bottom, and the internals are pretty interesting. Correct me if I'm wrong, is the camera lens exposed? I thought the glass cover remains there during disassembly.
Mine is blue. I attached a pic of it.

The thing you see in the picture in post #15 is actually a flat cable that connects to a microphone? that is just beside the jack, there is a small hole in the casing next to the jack.
And that flat cable is lead behind the 3,5mm jack and then to the speaker.

My screen has 2 problems:
I have about 7 dead pixels spread over the upper half of my screen. Very annoying, 2 are next to each other and thus extra visible. Worst to look at when I am viewing a dark coloured area.
It looks like the status-bar has burnt in. http://imgur.com/a/YM8xH#0
I'll try to make some decent pictures with a DSLR next weekend.
Does anybody else experience similar issues with the screen?
I'm afraid I have to relock the bootloader and flash a fresh install if SE advices me to hand it in, and I will also be without a phone for weeks.

hi, in my opinion, it is not a software issue, this is in hardware, it cause the alignment of the back-light to the lcd screen. some of the lcd have a thin fiber optic film.... if this on is not aligned or not totaly intact with the lcd screen there is a possibility to have a dark color....
this only on my own opinion.... thanks!

I see it on every screen, every colour. But with a black background, it's hard to notice.
After about an hour of charging, the USB debugging icon has burnt in!

Doesn't look like dead pixels - they are nothing like that. It looks like water damage. I've had to replace several BB and Nokia LCDs due to that (all had been "damp" at one time other). One friend had used a solvent aerosol cleaner on the phone and the LCD went "stained". Replacement cured it.

But I didn't drop it in water. Could this be caused by damp air only? Also, would this be covered by the warranty? Can I 'repair' this myself by leaving my phone next to a hair dryer or in a box with silica gel?
Once this has happened, it is not reversible. Sorry.

Will try to get it repaired under warranty, else I can buy a new LCD for ~€30
Hey Guys, so i am planning to buy a Galaxy II soon so i had a query about which color i should go for. For me both the white and the black one will be for the same price. So here is what i want to know:
Does the White Galaxy S II get dirty and scratched easily as compared to the black one? Ive heard the glossy back panel on the white one picks up scratches and dirt and turns yellowish over time. Is this true?
And secondly about the rim around white Galaxy S II is silver colored and around the black is chrome i think. Which one is more durable and scratch proof? I would prefer if you answered from personal experience rather than guessing! Cheers!
I'd go for black
I have the black one and it just looks lovely after almost a year of solid use. It's not a chrome bezel though, it's pretty dark.
I also had the black one as it doesnt get dirty easily. If you scare the phone get dirty easily, buy a protector. The color is pretty much of your opinion.
Yeah, black seems old but with the great amoled looks fine than white
Dude do not go for black . I have black but it sucks when compare to white. White looks simply awesome.

Pricelists I seen a while back had the black one £50 more than the white one.
I have a white one,but I think the black ones have a higher resale value as they must be more desirable.
And there's a pink option too.......lol

Hey is there any option to change full body of gs2 with different available color in Samsung service center.

I've had two S2's so far, both of them on black. Black ones are much easy to resell. They are also much more demanded, but if I could and if I do, I'd go for the white one. Just to try something different and also because on the reviews from youtube back from last year, it was clear the S2 was a bit more desired. The phone's in white can get dirty very easily so be aware of course. Black ones if scratched can be caught in the eye much easily and also dents or chips are more visible on the black ones imho.
My own experience
So I happen to own the white one..
Don't get me wrong, I love my phone and every thing but
it looks kinda "ODD" if you know what I mean..
especially when you are trying to watch a vid in a dark room
or when you get it out in a bus or somewhere crowded -you get people staring LOL -
I've been using it for a while and the back cover is as good as new.
I guess the problem is the shiny rim.. it gets scratched easily.
so If I get to choose again I'd go for the black this time ..
I want a red one
I'd go white... just keep it clean & use a protective clear case ^^
If someone has white but want black one then u can exchange with me. I have black but I want white.

last time i checked, the white one has smooth glossy finish for the battery cover unlike the black one. but if you get a case i dont think anyone would see it
the white looks nicer with the sliver bezel around it. if i could i would have gotten a white one but it came out after i got the black one -.-
My wife has a white one and I have a black one. Both purchased about 9 months ago. I look after mine better than my wife, as in I don't just throw it into a bag of keys like she does! However her white gs2 looks like new still and mine always looks a little worn.
I would say we use them about the same too.

i think the white one will appear more dirty than the white one but you can easily clean it off. however, the white one doesnt make scratches stand out unlike the black one
I just got a silver replacement for my black one... WTF?
Depends on what kinda ninja you are.
I wear black

The white one has about a $20 more resale value. Look it up on ebay. it sells allot more than the black one and the bids are always higher than the black one.
