Is there a Wifi tether version that works on the x2? I'm rooted of course & supercharged & need something that isn't just ad-hoc. Already tried barnacle & the native app with phone toggle and so far its a bust. Is qpst an option?
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA Premium App
I'm in the same boat, I used QSPT to get the dun out of my tethering app, but it kept getting replaced.

Sorry just read entire post
Yeah, that makes an ad-hoc network. Is there an option for infrastructure?
This version of wifi-tether works for my win7 nwtbook but not my vista laptop. What do I need to do for the qpst method? Did it in my fascinate by going in with dun enabled. Can't seem to find how to enable it in the x2.
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA Premium App
As it stands the QPST don't work. as soon as you reboot it overwrites the change.
I use barnacle with no issue, rooted with v6.

The problem is barnacle make ad-hoc also.
really? no wifi-hotspot for us yet?
I see the VZW application on my phone, haven't tried it yet though, didn't sign up for it. I wonder do they just charge me for it if I was to use it? Or would they call me up & scold me first?

They wont scold you for trying it. But it won't work unless you sign up for the additional service which costs $25 or $29 per month (can't remember which).
Is there no root app that allows us to use the Droid X2 as a wifi tether without the extra monthly charge? I keep seeing references to others who say they are doing this, but no one seems to want to say exactly what app they are using.

again that's ad-hoc, we're all looking to create an actual wi-fi hotspot in infrastructure mode

Bump. I wish I understood why some phones can do infrastructure and others not.

Actually I just tried it and I can connect to the internet with my W7 laptop with that ad-hoc tether program running on my Droid X2. I'm sending this reply over that connection.
I guess, as implied earlier in the thread, W7 makes provisions for ad-hoc. Don't know about other versions of Windows. My Samsung Galaxy Tab cannot see the connection.
still looking for a hotspot instead of ad-hoc wireless tether though, got multiple wi-fi devices that I may want to connect...
I am interested in the infrastructure Wifi as well. I am attempting to connect a Color Nook to the DX2 and can't get it to recognize the ad-hoc network.
for the NC, you have to dload an adhoc wifi supplicant file. then you have to replace the existing wifi supplicant file w/ it and then reboot. your NC should now be able to see and connect to ad hoc networks.
google is your friend.

FWIW The Wifi Teather program works with the new 2nd Generation B&W nook (at least since firmware update 1.0.1 - don't know if it worked before). So now the ad-hoc wifi teather works with my laptop running Win7 and my completely stock nook. I'm happy
im assuming there is no solution yet. im still using the ad-hoc method for now. but i would love to see a true hotspot
I don't know why people don't understand that you specifically said infrastructure vs ad hoc. You can use the phone for infrastructure for free.
First use the hotspot app and wait for it to start up.
Hook up your computer and open your browser
when it takes you to verizons website, all is good.
go to your phones dialer and type in *#*#INFO#*#* or *#*#4636
select phone info
go down almost to the bottom and you will see a button that says "turn off radio"
Press this and wait 10 seconds and press it again to turn it back on.
Now when it regains 3g signal you should have internet access on your computer.
You may have to redo this a few times for it to work. It works for me 75% of the time. Sometimes it doesn't work but most of the time it does.
Good luck
I was playing with my friends evo lastnight and wantted to see if I could connect wifi to the ps3 and I was..so I downloaded a few tether apps on my MoPho to see if I would be able to tether to the system but it wouldnt show my phone so I played with the settings and still no luck..i looked around on a few sites and everyone is saying I cant be in ad hoc,is there anyone that has tried this and got it to work or is the phone just not built for tethering out side of ad hoc?

Wifi tether beta 6 . Change the network to infrastructure . Now, I'm not sure if it will work on the Photon, but it works on a ton of other devices. Not sure why it wouldn't.
Sent from my MB855 using xda premium
I use tether beta 6 also. I set the device-profile to "samsung galaxy s" and the setup-method to "Netd (master)." I also have the routing fix enabled, but I dont know if that is necessary. It will give an error at startup, but everything works. You should then be able to connect your PS3. It works for mine.
This may be a dumb question but, why? Even if you could play games on Photon, PS3 is across the room? Again, maybe I'm missing something (easy to do!)

It lets them get on Sprint's Network with the PS3 so they can sign into the Playstation Network, and maybe play games if they connection is fast enough where they are. Does 4G work with this or are you stuck on Sprint's crappy 3G?
Ty all to posted, ill try to connect when I get off work...but sprints crappy 3g is better then my wifi wich with me living right next a tower it shouldnt be so bad

If it helps..
First i'll start by sayin i'm a COMPLETE NOOB, But managed to connect to ps3 and psps.I have root Inspire and using wifi tether 3.1 beta11. Inside the settings it had 8.8.8.8 primary dns 8.8.4.4 alternate....I simply put those same dns number in settings of ps3 and psps. Worked fine, although signal in my house is terrible(3 bars/edge) I too checked routing fix, but i think the dns thing is what really did the trick. Also, just to let you know I didnt change any other settings in ps3/psp. Hope it helps
Have a question re Wi-Fi tethering. I am rooted running Eclipse V1.3 I am looking to tether my Samsung Galaxy 10.1 tablet and my Droid X2. The problem is when I start the tether with the phone and tablet I get a webpage from Verizon wanting me to purchase the tether for $20.00 a month. I thought one of the benefits of being rooted allowed you to be able to connect without any restrictions? Any help would be appreciated.
You will need to use either this...
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
or an app from the market.. I recommend Barnacle as I have used it before.
That being said, so far these apps only support ad-hoc mode and not master or access point mode so some devices and clients may not connect.
Your mileage may vary..
There is also a thread here.. somewhere about using radiocom to tag data packets differently to utilize the stock hotspot, but i beleive that method no longer works.
Barnacle is very simple and easy to use. Can be set with wep password too. I recommend it as well

Thank you both for your quick reply, will give it a shot.
i 3rd, the use of the Barnacle app. my friends that have iphones ask to use my wifi.. and this little app has never failed.
I've heard of an app called face sniff. Supposedly like fire sheep where it van gain access to accounts on a network. I wonder if A) it works, and B) it works with barnacle haha
Anyone ever try the app before?

Device Profile - Samsung Galaxy S
Setup Method - Netd (master)
then whatever ssid you want to call it and whatever password you want for it also...

I have been doing it a little different than what was posted so maybe you can try it. May not make a difference but works for me.
**Someone else figured this method out and gets all the credit. I can't find the original post to link to.
1) Download Wireless Tether app and then Data Enabler widget from Market.
2) Set in WT app:
Device Profile --> Google - NexusOne
Setup Method --> Netd (master)
3) Toggle Data Enabler widget off --> turns off 3G/4G connectivity
4) Start tethering in WT app.
5) Toggle Data Enabler widget on --> turns on 3G/4G
Device should immediately show up as WAP and connect via infrastructure mode.
Works great for me. Hope this helps.

Thats crazy - I downloaded this and it tells me my "kernal will not allow the access-control, access-control disabled"...
I tried changing the device type, etc as you guys stated above, but it still won't start up the tethering.. any ideas?

Should still tether, mine does. Access Control just let's you grant or deny access to machines as they connect

odd - okay - will give it another try at home.. I had a couple guys try to find the wireless signal with their phones and no one could find the network. Will post back when I figure out if that is working or not.

Please state what ROM your are on.

If your phone doesn't already include the option to tether in your settings, download the app from the link above. Once downloaded you're pretty much good to go from there... Sorry for not elaborating more, but I'm typing this on my phone... When I get to a PC in the morning I'll type up something more formal/informal.
Quick question for reference, what rom are you using?
My vibrant has a euphoria.. I thought T-Mobile block tethering...
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA Premium App
They blocked tethering through user agent sniffing . Chrome seems to be the only user agent being blocked at the moment . If you use internet explore it will work or you could use "user agent switcher" extension for chrome .

Really? Because I just typed up this post on my PC in Google Chrome (without the "user agent switcher" extension) and I am currently tethered to my Vibrant. I've also tested Internet Explorer, which also works while tethered to my Vibrant... I'm using the app I mentioned above, although the built in wireless tether feature also works for me. Then again, I am using a custom rom, so that could explain why it works for me. Anywho... landrian18, you want to know how to get tether on your device? OK, I'll show you how to do it both on an ICS rom and with the "WiFi Tether for Root Users" app.
On an ICS rom:
Note- I'm not positive this is the same method you would use on euphoria as I'm on a different ICS rom, however, you can still try and see. It should be the same.
1. Go into your phones system settings, this can be accomplished by either locating the settings icon in your app drawer/home screen or by clicking the leftmost physical touch button on your phone.
2. Under WIRELESS & NETWORKS click More....
3. Click Tethering & portable hotspot.
4. Click on Portable Wi-Fi hotspot.
Note 2- Your phone is now acting like a Wi-Fi hotspot and is accessible/detectable by almost all wireless devices except other Android smart phones. If you would like to encrypt your Wi-Fi hotspot click Configure Wi-Fi hotspot and change the password. You can also rename the Wi-Fi hotspot by changing the SSID from AndroidAP (or whatever the default is) to whatever you'd like.
On the app:
Note- These steps are written under the assumption that you have already installed the "WiFi Tether for Root Users" application.
1. Locate and launch the WiFi Tether for Root Users application.
2. Done. That's all you got to do.
Note 2- If you want to customize the SSID, password (remove password), encryption type, etc. Simply go into the apps settings.
IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE, FEEL FREE TO ASK.
I'm on a custom ROM I've been tethering forever but now I get redirected to TMobiles tethering advertisement page . Others have recently complained about this on XDA . It only works of I use user agent switcher .
Here is the thread www.forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=840423

That's rather intriguing. Especially since the thread you linked me to originated in 2010. I've never had this issue, although I do use Google Chrome. Hmmm... Very interesting indeed. So you get a window from T-Mobile if you tether using Google Chrome and without the switcher extension?

Yes sir . I'm at work right now when I get home I'll post the page I get redirected to without User Agent Switch . I have two Vibrant and both get redirected . Mine is on Chimera and the other is on Euphoria .
I have ics and I use the interface no app needed. Though when I used the together for root I get errors . Strange because when I had gingerbread I used the root tether app with no problems

1.
does the phone charge, tether and receive incoming calls while pluged in usb, during wifi or usb tethering? (I used to tether an evdo device and an incoming call would drop the internet)
2.
supposedly easytether will screw with any future attempts to flash your phone and best avoided, whats the best fully featured free alternative to pdanet for a rooted vibrant to usb tether? + can you confirm wifi tether for root works on device?
3.
If I use firefox on my laptop and get redirected to a tmobile subscription page all I have to do is install this addon on my laptop. even if I get re-directed before installing the addon, installing the addon will solve the issue?
thanks, I did a couple searches and didn't find answers.

Just a quick question, are you sure you have the vibrant, and not the galaxy s 4g? There is no stock gingerbread on the vibrant...
Side note, I've used easy tether (great alternative to pda net) along with firefox for a few years and have never seen the t mobile warning. Used it on stock and rooted g1 and vibrant with never any issues.
Does an incoming call drop your usb internet connection and does it charge while connected?
Unless I'm wrong the sgh-t959v is a vibrant as observed from the label. I updated via kies to gingerbread rom from mfg that why I called it stock, not a custom rom.
T959v isn't the same as our t959 Vibrants.
Ours didn't have a GB update via Kies. Be careful even using Kies.
-I'm not sure there is much in our Vibrant thread that applies to t959v at all. Is the t959v the Samsung Blaze 4g? I must research this when I have time.
note: don't modify your phone with anything you see here at all until someone with more knowledge chimes in. I think its a bad idea.
T959v is the galaxy s 4g! T959 is the vibrant. The vibrant never got the gingerbread update, galaxy s 4g did.
Easy tether does charge while in use, phone calls I don't know, never tried.
