My First Brick - HTC EVO 3D

So yesterday I tried to use the Juopunutbear S-OFF method, I was super excited to get an s-off method that would not have to brick my phone. It made it even better that I had the live cd burned to my usb ready too go. So i got as far as the wire trick and I even got the screen with Juopunutbear loading on my phone, all the sudden it went black. An I ****ing knew it instantly. I pressed the power button--nothing at all. I must say these last two days without my evo have been so ****ty probably the ****tiest days Ive had since I got the evo 3d last year. But I sent an email to RMA, basically saying that I accepted an OTA and my phone became response less. The worst part is Ive adapted my life to XDA its just something that I do everyday without even thinking about it. And I am still going on when ever I get the chance or I am bored. Anyone have any tips? Experiences? Thoughts on how HTC RMA will respond?

This is why I have insurance. For $10 a month, throw the phone at a sidewalk until the screen is shattered. free instant replacement.

I have already had 2 replacements through asurion and Im pretty sure thats the limit.

This happened to me.
I'm planning on going to sprint tomorrow.
Weird thing is my device randomly starts working then stop working by itself.

Take it to a store, play dumb.. "I don't know what happened, it just quit". Won't count against your Asurion claims.

there is ultrahardbricked, hard bricked, and sooft brick. Im talking ultra hard, no status light, nothing at all.

Do this in order:
1. Get a spare sprint phone
2. Change your ESN to that phone
3. After a day or two go back to the 3D and add insurance (you can always add insurance for up to 30 days on any device you activate)
4. Go into sprint get a new phone
5. ?????
6. Proceed to make a 'OMGGGMG GOT A NEW PHONE FROM SPRINT!!!111!1" thread in general or the Q&A

They told me 15 days. I don't know the phones are on back order. I have had a s off brick for over a week and finally got my tracking number this morning. I am excited...I have been using a 1970's piece of **** Samsung Instinct...it was the bomb 30 years ago. Ohhh btw LMAO at the guy who said smash his phone into the concrete that made me chuckle.

Guys I have to close this thread and here's why.
It's been stated many times that rooting your phone voids the warrenty. You knowingly voided the warranty(as we all did), but the discussion has become how and what to do in order to rip off the insurance company to give you a new one after you voided the warranty and forgo your right to use the insurance or the right to get a warranty replacement through Sprint or HTC. That I cannot allow to take place. I hope you can understand, but leaving this open says that xda condones your actions, and I don't believe that's acceptable.
On a side note. That really sucks and I hope you can get your phone fixed, I couldn't imagine life without mine.

odd...EVO 3d factory reset itself?

so last night my EVO decided to drain its battery quicker than usual and when I tried turning it on this morning it decided to factory restore itself.....
now the good thing is it boots in about 15 seconds but the bad thing is I lost all my apps and the data that went along with it including messages and application data.
has anyone else experienced this? should I bring it back to sprint or just hang on to it? I have had it since day 1, and haven't really had any other problems with it.
Have you rooted it?
nope. not at all
Then I would return it. I wouldn't chance **** like that happening again.

I have had this phone since it launched.
I brought it down to a sprint store today and they told me it would be a $35 fee for them to repair it. I asked them about the 1 year warranty and they told me that is an HTC warranty and if I wanted to use that I would have to send it to them and wait for them to fix it.
the phone is in perfect condition as it has been in an otterbox defender since day 1.
It shouldn't cost $35 to repair it unless it's physical damage to the screen, do you have Sprint TEP?
If not I seriously recommend adding it if you still can.

it definitely is not physically damaged it looks brand new.

Wow - they snuck that out, didn't they. Walked back to my phone and saw it was in the middle of a forced update. So much for temp root, etc. Really bummed.
If you are using temp root simply because you don't want to unlock the boot loader, sorry I have no sympathy for you. If you can't unlock it because it is a company phone or something, then I feel bad for you.

Con ... first, thanks for all the work you do for the Rezound.
To answer you ... it's all on me I'm on Rezound # 4 and since heat is very subjective and there is no answer to what ultimately happens when/if a "re-locked" phone gets back to Verizon, I haven't unlocked. It was nice having temp root from time to time when needed, but I don't have $650 lying around, so I stayed locked.
I'll tell ya ... I wish we had S-OFF and S-ON swapping like on my dearly departed DINC. That would solve it all

I usually give my devices the 2 week rule. If it doesn't have problems in the first 2 weeks, it is likely it won't have any until the warranty expires. Then at that point I would be paying for issues anyway. If it has problems in those 2 weeks (I have NEVER had an issue with an electronic device in my life as far back as my 4th gen clickwheel ipod) I would keep returning until I get a good one.
Welp

... and that's a good rule; but whether or not a phone overheats (which is what I wish I knew) or is acting normally given the ambient temperature + what you are doing, is too subjective across threads to be determinable. Short of standing next to someone running basically the same background threads (although I would gladly dismiss that), running battery indicator, and playing the same game at the same time for the same length; there is no true way to know yes or no. ... so that 2 weeks never ticks off
Anyway - again, thanks for all your hard work for the Rezound.
One word..... Asurion, their replacement program is awesome and they don't care about root etc. IF you ever have an issue you call CS and complain. They promptly send out a new one. You just gotta pay the initial 100 dollars.
The cheaply made htc batteries have a lot to do with the overheating. When they start using some well made batteries the overheating should stop.

USB Port semi-dead, will Jig still work?

Ok so I had to use Mobile Odin to flash back to stock everything, but I still have the counter (no triangle).
I had bought a Jig that was recommended on here, but it didn't work tried it on several phones just to make sure.
So will it work even with the port messed up, that way I can get another?
It does charge though, but PC won't recognize it and yes I tried different PCs and cables.
It might, but if you're sending it back to AT&T I wouldn't worry too much as long as you're on stock, and erase your internal SD card.
I did that months ago, with a flash counter of 2, and they never did slap me with a charge because of breaking warranty. Plus man, worse comes to worse, you tell them that a "friend" told you he could fix your phone, and you trusted him, but you never did anything other than use the Android Market. They'll buy that, thinking he must of tripped the counter. That was my exit strategy at least, but nah, never got called up even. Shame really.

Probably is a refurb but I've found the refurbs are better than the new. Normally less issues. The people in the AT&T store are clueless, they have not a clue what they are doing but I feel bad for them since they deal with the dumbest people in the world everyday and that would be the average cell phone user blaming them for losing their contacts and pictures. I laugh. I always go in and tell them specifically I need nothing backed up, I also tell them I factory reset and have everything at home on my computer. They normally get me in and out of there within 5 minutes.

bottom 2 mm of phone not working right??

the bottom 2 mm of my sprint evo 3d is not working right. by that, i mean that its sorta uncalibrated. my phone is rooted and it was normal until yesterday. now, if i put my finger on the bottom to mms of the screen then it claims it to be higher that it is.
for example, the dev options gives me a screen pointer overlay option and if i have my phone on the very bottom possible it says its at 888.5 on the Y. my finger trace is followed but higher.
thats a really bad explanation so ill try using a picture from paint

my photoshop trial ended a month ago so im making due on paint for this
but i think im just gunna take it in to sprint... i already flashed an ruu and unrooted and got s-on... on the bright-side hopefully ill get a new phone!
same thing happened to my phone. took it to a sprint repair store they told me to come bak in 2 hrs i did and they replaced my phone with a refurb. unfortunatly my refurb is also borked and will restart whenever i connect to wifi. anyways best of luck to u =)
uh oh. i hope i dont get one of those... i never turn wifi off! :O
i plan on re-rooting or rooting whatever phone i get, so hope its not messed up and is in good condition...
you think theyll give me a refurbed white one if i ask?
They originally told me that they didn't have any refurbs at the store and would have to order one but theymagically found one...
I called sprint and complained and they helped me out with a loop hole to get a new phone a year ahead of time and I got the s3. I wasn't dealing with any more crap phones from them even tho they say they r HTC certified

New Policy For Best Buy's Extended Warranty

Hey guys/gals,
Just thought I would share this with everyone. Best Buy has a new policy with their warranty for phones (at least the ones by me do).
You no longer have to ship your phone in for service. All you do is go to the store, tell them your problem, they ship a new phone (the last couple I had replaced arrived in less than 36 hours), and you bring your phone in when the new/re-manufactured one arrives.
This is great if you have a problem where your current phone still works. You don't have to dig out an old phone, or rent a POS loaner phone from BBY, but you can still do all of those things if your phone is unusable.
Like I said just though I would share this info. I think BBY keeps making their protection policies better and better.
Hope this has helped someone!
I will put this to the test this weekend!!! Good find!!!

They did not offer it to me until I spoke with the manager because i didn't want to be without a phone for a few days or use one of their loaner phones.
Sent from my EVO LTE rocking Sense 5!
about time they changed it, I canx my 3x black ties just because of this
Best buy insurance, ftw. I will never buy another phone anywhere else. Im on my 3rd lte and i got the lte free because they had no more 3d's. They ask basic questions about what happened and then ship it out. I got my last replacement in 2 days. Took it in on a Monday at 7pm and got my replacement on Wednesday at 7pm.
Awesome. I love black tie (bb). I had to replace due to malfunctions and no questions or hassles in fact the reason I signed up for black tie was the guy indicated I would never have to send anything in and that I would get a new replacement directly from the store which they did. I even had the guy write and confirm that on my sales receipt because I didn't believe him.

Thank you all for the info. I won't be going to Sprint stores anymore. BB sounds like the way to go now. Back when I worked there it definitely wasn't but a lot has changed since then. Good to know.
My EVO has developed a problem where I'm getting all sorts of crazy noise on the screen. Definitely a hardware problem as it even has problems with the HTC logo on boot. I'm currently S-OFF with the latest CM release installed. Do I need to unroot and restore back to Sense before I take the phone into Best Buy, or do they not care?
Thanks for the help and all the useful info!!

Yeah, my store is the same way, but I doubt every store is the same. To be safe I would backup, flash a stock rom, bring it in and show them the problem, then recover until your "new" phone gets in and the re-flash a stock rom when you bring it back.
I doubt they'd care, but this should cover your a$$ either way.

Best buy covers software though right? So why would it matter? There's nothing saying they don't cover rooted devices. I even asked the manager when i got my 3d and he said if i bricked it I'm covered. So why flash back to stock? Unless youre having issues that could be rom/kernel related of course.. then youll obviously want to flash to something else to make sure its not the rom and then go back to stock to show them its happeneing on there also.

Because it is better to be safe than sorry. If you read the terms and conditions, they don't list software as covered. They could deny coverage if they wanted to. Every store is not the same, but if you hand them a phone that is obviously not stock, there is more of a chance of them questioning it. I don't think they would, but it takes me 2 minutes to flash back to stock, so I'd rather avoid a potential headache. I'm getting a "new" phone anyway, so what do I care if I leave cm10 on my old one. Plus, it's a good way to wipe your phone.
Personally, if I were a store employee and someone brought me a "bricked" phone that I could prove was rooted, I wouldn't cover them. If you bricked your phone, that's your fault. Best Buy or any other business shouldn't subsidize your hobby, because you didn't know what you were doing. That makes the development community look bad. Now if it were a problem that was obviously not caused by root, I would look the other way.
I'm currently in this situation where my screen is cracked. I too was wondering if I needed to unroot before I had them ship the phone out for repair. What stock ROM does everyone suggest?
