So i rooted my SGP 4.0 and i got Steve's kernel on it ... and i know if try to add voodoo sound form the Store it says its not compatible but if you side load it it works fine. I was wondering if there was a way to know what apps are now compatible because my device is now rooted... i mean without having to plug and chug each one i want to use that it.
trial and error is really the only way, you can flash a ROM with the device ID hack done is another option, but that can make programs not show up aswell, or there are the questionable app markets (against the rules to give names, I believe) most of them don't filter for device "compatibility" to save you the trouble of side loading.

I hope i wrote this thread in the right place...
What I was wondering is are the apks downloaded from the internet phone specific or can i just run the apks into any android os phone. For instance if i download an apk from the internet, is it only meant for a certain android device or i can run that apk in the hero,g1 and basically anything android
apps arent device dependant, within boundarys. different screen resolutions can cause trouble, so there might be high and low resolution versions of an app. it is scalable, but you know how it is, doesn't always work like planned.
so answer is no, apps are not specific, and yes, this is the right place
Thanks for the reply. Should have asked this earlier but so long as its for the android there shouldnt be any risk of bricking my phone right??(this goes as far as apk are concern)
no, a default APK cannot brick your phone, like from a small puzzle game or something..
well, there maybe some device specific apps, like the HTC battery widget, doesn't work on the Villian 5.1 sprint port, cause the famework is sprint, and the app is made for the Hero, so it simply won't install..
but there shouldn't be any problems, with default games/apps or something
thanks so much...
The only real specifications come down to the OS your running as for example os 1.5 ran differently to OS 2.0 some apps won't run without modifications.
I think google try to reduce these problems as much as they can though.
Some apps have hardware restrictions for example google earth, can be installed on a hero but it wont run.
Other apps won't be visible in the market if your missing something like a camera (won't see camera apps).
But on the whole just install and see if it works
getting mine tomorrow and haven't had a sammy phone before. had to do a goldcard method last year with my desire though which was a pain.
i was looking at this guide and it seems too easy somehow - like i'm missing something. or has rooting just come leaps and bounds since just last year? if so - sweet!
it looks like you use odin to flash new roms too. any particular rom that people recommend?

New roms flash via Odin or some via CWM .

Current custom roms are early builds as phone only six weeks old and the devs are on a learning curve .

rooting is as easy as it looks. cause of the unlocked bootloader u don't have to work around it like on the HTC ones. just flash the cf corresponding with ur kernel
If you're getting a Samsung Fascinate, (that's the Phone I have and love); I don't recommend Rooting or Flashing the ROM, as it comes with or will be able to DownLoad Over the Air from Verison Wireless the latest Froyo, and later on you'll be able to Get the next version, (Gingerbread), also Over the Air.
Here's what I found. If you Flash the ROM with Odin or "ROM Manager", (DownLoad from the Android Market ~ Caution: The Samsung Facinate seems to need ClockWorkMod Version 2.5.1.2 or it will hang, {as there are two separate language barriers and version 3.x.x.x at this time can't communicate with the other language. See the Link Below for more Details}).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...3#post14476573). Use Ctrl-F to Find "USB Port Got Confused".
Also, if you Flash the ROM with "ROM Manager", the Samsung Fascinate might not be able to get the Next Flash Upgrades from Verizon Wireless or other. It will be manual from now on. However; you get the SuperUser App when you Flash, (which will also Root your Phone), but, you can also DownLoad this from the Android Market. The Cool thing about "ROM Manager" is that you can BackUp your ROM.
You will have Froyo 2.2.1, and can DownLoad the Latest Adobe Flash Player, 10.3.x. This will allow you to Track Packages that might be sent to you from eBay via PayPal; however, the Daily Briefing won't have a City for you to find, and so your Desk Cradle can't find either the Weather for your City or the Daily Briefing either.
Now, as to this Samsung Phone defaulting to BING for Maps and Searches; that's a minor thing as you can DownLoad Google Maps, and you'll also get Google Latitude and Places, (a Feature I use often)
And the New Stock Froyo allows you to put a Google Search bar and the Google Icon right on your screen, (find an Empty Spot and Press and hold for a few seconds, then go to Widgets and Scroll down to Google Search ~ All).
And if you Save the Web Site for Google, and for Google Tasks, then you can also Press & Hold the screen and place Short-Cut Icons for these on your Phone as well, and if you're still not satisfied, you might be able to change the Search Button to default to Google, (but that is beyond my knowledge of how to do so, search the XDA Forums). Select a Blank Screen before pressing the Applications Menu, (on the far Right). The Google Icon is also in the Applications Menu and you can Press and Hold on this Icon and it will appear on the Previous Screen.
You get a lot of so called Bloatwear on the Stock Froyo, (like VZ Navigator, which will cost money. Use Google Maps instead). You also get Amazon Kindle, Madden NFL 11, NFS Shift, Tetris, V Cast Music, V Cast Tones, V Cast Videos, V Cast Apps... but none of these seem to slow down the performance of this Amazing Samsung Fascinate, (especially if you don't use them, and you can UnInstall them using the stock "Task Manager". I recomnend DownLoading the "Advanced Task Killer", and you can still tinker with "ROM Manager" & "Root Explorer" if you've a mind to.
Back in the early part of this year, I might have said "It's worth the effort to Flash the ROM" to get the latest Froyo Firmware, and Adobe Flash. But, now that it's stock, I think you're asking for something that just takes up your time that could be better spent showing love and affection to your spouse or family.
Froyo:
Cons
1. ThinkFree Office" seems to give an extra "Text encoding" Pop-Up Screen with Froyo, (either Stock or Flashed); that didn't occur with the previous ROM.
2. If you Flash the ROM, the Daily Briefing no longer can Find a City.
Pros:
1. You get the Extra "Auto Rotation" Menu Choice on the Pull Down Screen, (which means to you, that you can lay in bed and Turn Off the "Auto Rotation" so the Screen doesn't keep flipping on you)
2. You can DownLoad Adobe Flash Player.
thanks all, - JC - i'm in the UK so the phone should be vanilla (hopefully)
looks like i just need root for the moment then until devs get more time with the phone

Hi, I've got a new phone recently, and I'd like to turn my old HTC legend into a mp3 player.
I'd like to completely remove Android and just make it a file manager similar to an iPod Classic, so I can play audio and video files.
I want the file manager to be the ONLY program on the phone, exept being able to take pictures (althogh the last is optional)
How do you do that/anything similar?
Thank you.
I don't think removing Android fully and using the phone with just a file browser is an option, I might be wrong though.
Your best bet would be to run CM7 without the Gapps package, this will probably be as light and fast as your going to get.
MoPhoACTV Initiative
Well, I don't want it to be an Android anymore
I did something similar with my old Motorola Droid. I wanted it just to be an Audible player, so I installed CM7 and just disabled as much as I could. With root access, you can remove a number of system apps without breaking anything, and then use something like LauncherPro to hide the rest ot the icons in the app drawer that you don't want on there. You can also make a dock at the bottom in LauncherPro that has nothing on it, so that you can't even get to the drawer without adding an icon for it in the dock. You would end up with a homescreen that just has whatever specific apps you want on it, similar to an iPod Touch.
It'll probably be close to impossible to get something working on there that isn't Android--the touchscreen/wifi/camera rely on drivers and such. Your best bet will probably be to go with a ROM and customize it to fit your needs.
If you've ever used the Rockbox firmware for various MP3 players, there is an Android port. This runs like a regular app on Android. Its compiled daily for Android here:
http://rasher.dk/rockbox/android/
You still need an operating system, you can't just get rid of Android. You could disable stuff that isn't essential to the OS like Gapps, and any other apps you dont need.
A few questions about new root
Hey Guys!!
I'm very sorry if this is in the wrong section or if I sound a little bit on the dumb side, I'm a bit of a rooting noob, so I'm not as experienced on the ins and outs of a superuser enabled system quite yet.
I have a rooted Fire HDX 7" (thor) on version 3.2.8, and since installing google play, I keep getting an annoying pop up saying it's stopped, now I have done some reading on this, and people are saying that it's because google and amazon "aren't playing nice" what I want to know is, is there any way to disable the pop up window? I don't really care much for the application's instability at present, just the annoying pop up.
I am FAIRLY computer savvy, admittedly I'm more a hardware kind of lady, and I'm slightly weaker in the software side of life but I've done my A-Level computing and got a good grade, and I'm fairly able to interpret code and scripts if that's any help to you.
If it comes to installing ROMs, are there any ROMs compatible with such an old operating system version that will enable smooth running of google play apps?
if there aren't would I need to unroot and update, if so, how would I do that?
also, when referring to OS versions what does "stock" mean?
Again sorry if I appear a little ditsy, I would like to think I am fairly receptive to information, however.
Thanks!!

Hi - we all were Android/FireOS/HDX noobs at some point. Your questions are not out of the ordinary and show some knowledge of the relevant topics.
There is not an easy way to suppress the 'stopped' pop-up. Nor is there a way to prevent various Google services from occasionally crapping out. Happens on a wide variety of devices (even Google signature devices, ie: Nexus 4/5/7/10) with varying frequency. Amazon does not officially support Google Play Services so it's not surprising the failure rate is higher when run in conjunction with FireOS.
With 3.2.8 you can install Safestrap v3 (not v4) and Nexus v2 which brings AOSP to HDX including full access to the Play Store and other Google apps. Works great! You could also upgrade to FireOS 4.5.2, install Safestrap v4 and then flash a newer version of Nexus or CM11. However, there is risk and work associated with the upgrade. I would start with SS v3/Nexus v2 to see if it meets your needs.
Give it some thought. If you want to proceed I can provide links to appropriate discussion threads along with a quick overview of the process.
This is a known issue on Fire OS and some samsung devices. You either have to use a different rom on your device, downgrade to gapps 5.3 (i think), or just put up with the spamming until a fix is released. :/
Hey Davey and Terra_Byte_Tech,
Thanks for getting back in touch, I'm very sorry I wasn't able to reply earlier, I've been quite ill recently.
It's a shame there's no work around for the pop ups, I would normally stick with the older versions but youtube consistently harrasses me to update google play services.
I've found a make-shift work around though, and that's to freeze google play services with titanium backup and unfreeze it when you first start youtube, youtube only checks if Google play services is enabled when it first starts up, I'm assuming it's an update check of sorts, after that GPS can be disabled again with no issues.
Play store works fine with Google play services disabled.
I like the idea of safestrap v3, it seems like the easiest option when taking into account my software version, I'll admit I've been trying to find a link for it but I've noticed the mirrors in the kindle safestrap thread are both down. I've heard that the AOSP ROM doesn't have any headphone capability though, or has that bug been fixed?
I do have the 'update-kindle-13.4.5.2_user_452004120.bin' file available and ready to use, however I'm not sure why but the kindle doesn't detect the update file, I'm pretty sure it's probably the root and the workaround to disable OTA updates I put in but even removing the root and renaming the folder back I can't do it, but I'm sure if we can find a way around this little bump, we could try safestrap v4 and CM11.
Thanks!

Hi Zee - sorry for your recent illness. Hope things are better now.
You should discard the 4.5.2 file you mentioned unless you are absolutely sure it came from this thread. Updating 3.2.8 with the 'wrong' variant of FireOS v4 can lead to an unrecoverable brick. The OTA block is probably what saved you if it's a stock update .bin.
Headphones work fine on CM11 and Nexus v2/v4. Whatever information you had is likely outdated.
Once you have the right 4.5.2 file in the root of the sdcard folder try using HDX toolkit to remove the OTA block. Make sure your device can not connect (airplane mode engaged; delete all wifi profiles)! Root status is irrelevant once the update file has been placed. Let's see if that works. Keep in mind there is risk associated with upgrading with consequences ranging from data loss to an unrecoverable device. Most survive the journey intact but you need to be aware things can go wrong.
If you make it to 4.5.2 skip the WiFi setup section as Amazon will immediately attempt to update your device to 4.5.5 (as of this writing) which is not rootable.
You should also download ES File Explorer and Kingroot apks and place them in a uniquely named folder of your choosing on sdcard before upgrading. You'll need to install these on 4.5.2 and you will not be able to easily download them without risking an unwanted OTA.
(FYI - I will be traveling the next few days will limited connectivity. Feel free to post questions; others will likely respond)
Let me preface my question with some info. I know my way around android and have been flashing roms since the first non-google rom was created. I also have extensive linux/windows/cli experience. My experience falls a little short when it comes to the more modern (and customized) android internals (such as which packages are required by what these days).
I already have the GlobmallX1 and while experiencing issues I decided I wanted to further clean the junk off of it. I also have an H96 Pro + ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06W2L2WTY ) that will be here on Monday that I would like to clean off before we start using it. The only things I really need on these boxes are going to be Kodi and Netflix. I would like the play store installed and obviously anything required for the remote/wifi to function.
I am seeing a ton of packages installed that at first glance I would assume are not required, however I want to avoid killing the box by removing packages that are required by others. The Globmall came with Kodi and a Kodi updater preinstalled. I am probably going to backup the kodi install and wipe both of those out and install manually so I know the package has not been tampered with. I found a lot of stuff in /system/preinstall that I would like to get rid of, but again unsure if any are required. I looked into finding a clean rom to use instead for the H96 but it seems they all are missing something (sound, 4k, wifi, etc). I also searched for apps that might have some internal bloatware database however everything I found seems to be trash and just shows all apps and sends you to settings to uninstall.
My questions:
1: Is there an easy way to check a package to see if its required/important/malicious (either an app, or something I can do via adb)?
2: On these china kodi boxes, can the entire /system/preinstall dir be wiped out and the device reset safely?
3: I am seeing word that as long as the cpu and wifi chip match, roms from similar boxes can normally be safely flashed. I know flashing is in general not "safe" and has risk, but am I likely to find clean android roms that are fully working?
4: Does anyone know if there is a good place to find bash precompiled for arm(v8l)? I really hate this 'toybox' shell that I am finding on the boxes I have.
5: Last question is regarding a netflix issue I am having that I think is a problem on the box. Has anyone seen this before?:
Netflix was previously working a few weeks ago. I didnt use it frequently so I dont know when it broke. Basically what happens is I can load netflix and click on a show. The show will load and play about 1-4 seconds of video and a popup will appear (error 0013) saying it could not connect to the netflix service. While this popup is playing, the video sometimes pauses with audio continuing for a few seconds and sometimes freezes on a single frame. This happens on about 80% of the shows I try to play, however the 3 shows we want to use netflix for are all in that group.
This morning, I tried a couple older Netflix apks (I was running 4.13.3):
4.11.0, 4.12.1, 4.13.0, 4.13.1, 4.13.2
All experienced the same issue (again, why I feel the issue is with the box and not the app). A few other things Ive tested are resolution (1080p and 2160p) and enabling/disabling HDR (heard this can cause netflix/kodi issues).
I know this is a massive dump, but any help on any of the questions above will be appreciated. I have googled and searched forums for each of these, so If the answers are there I may be searching for the wrong thing. Thanks in advance.
Nothing? Is this a bad forum to post this on?
