[Q] GPS - Does it work? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So dose the SGS3 have a better GPS than any of the other Samsung phones?
accuracy is what i am talking about not GPS lock. GPS lock mean very little really
How does the GPS work over time and distance?

Hopefully it will be better than the S1's GPS. I use a GPS mouse anyway to save the battery from draining

This is also a very impotent question for me and hopefully someone can bring any light into the dark.
The Galaxy Nexus also has a very bad accuracy when it comes to GPS even if it locks very fast!

I tried navigation today through sygic while travelling at 140 km/h. It was spot on. I also checked it through gps status and gps test apps and I got 10/14 locks under 5 secs

[Q] Whats the GPS on Atrix like

Considering buying an ATRIX but I need good GPS, whats locking speed and accuracy like and is it fast even with Data connection off?
I consider it great....but I always have connection on....
Enviado desde mi MB860 usando Tapatalk
Not sure about with data off, but in regular use its great, and is one of the main reasons I switched from the iPhone. It also seems to calculate real time traffic into your ETA.

keep mobile data off 85% of the time. almost never use the gps. connects within seconds indoors without downloading data. ive had a g1, droid, and acer iconia tab. this blows them away gps wise.
I was shocked at how fast it connected and started navigating. Last week I tried my g/f's inspire. Took like over 5 mins to lock. My Atrix takes seconds.
The Atrix has a fantastic gps. Even better than my son's low-end Garmin. I used it for a 600-mile trip to Spokane and it never missed a beat. I loaded my route before leaving, and it cached all the maps. Hence, it worked well even in areas without data service. I was so impressed that I bought the car dock when I arrived in Spokane just to have better access to the gps features in the car.
Best GPS on any phone. I have ever used.

Rofl seriously my captivate gps would have me driving a mile away through houses, driving in one direction while pointing in another direction, and tell me I was accurate to 30m all at the same time. Atrix gps is awesome.

Agreed, i'm very happy with the gps. It didnt occur to me to test without data before but i just tried it.
I went into airplane mode, went into Gps Test app and turned gps on. It immediately located the first satellite and others, and ~6-7 seconds later it had full lock. This is from my 3rd floor office of a 4 floor building.

GPS is awesome on these phones. I don't know about with the data off though, you have to get maps from somewhere. With Google maps, you can set it to cache your route and that helps if you're in poor service areas. I use mine almost everyday, and all day long, it never misses a step.
I came from the Captivate and I can tell you it's excellent. I get an approximate location within 2-3 seconds, and an accurate location within about 7-8 seconds. And by accurate within 5 feet or about 1.5M. I was surprised how fast and accurate the GPS was on my phone. This was while indoors, I'm sure if you went outside you could lock on a few seconds faster.
I think you have your answer OP.
Keep in mind Google Maps will use the cell towers to get location. Google will even work if you disable the GSP. I use Navigon. I like having the maps on my phone just in case. I also use BackCountry Navigator. Both these programs will only use the GPS. The Atrix GPS is great. I has always lock in 10 12 seconds or less. If you use GPS Status to download the A-GPS XTRA Data, it will lock in 1 to 3 seconds. The Atrix GPS seems to be very accurate also.
I found it to be awesome on froyo and real iffy on gingerbread.

GPS performance?

Hey guys, do we have any real world tests of GPS fix time / accuracy??

Havent seen any but this is a good question to ask "vickytoria" to test for us in her video thread.

Gps in this unit is wonderful... damn fast <2 seconds

See the video at 9:25 for yourself to be amazed.
Thanks
Accuracy is almost 30 feet which is 10 meters all the time which is a good sign.
Note that the device was tested in aero plane mode so no Agps which means a real good sign.

thanks for linking that.
wow! less than 2 secs connection on non-assisted gps.
btw, how does hox performs in that test?
lol @ background music, unbreak my heart.
it's like the s2 singing that song since it's thinking it's going to be replaced by the new s3.
hehe
as this device has glonass along with gps it should be damn fast.
nice video posted above and some extra news is the mobile needs 20 seconds to boot... i thought there would be some improvements here
A very good post and nice video, i was actually worried about this.
He says that even when he is in buildings and houses the GPS managed to lock onto a satellite.

HTC One X
Lock speed : 2 - 5 Seconds
Accuracy : 5 feet (<2 meters) [ Consistently getting 5 - 15 feet ]
Number of satellites lock : 2 - 10 Max [But never looses connection]
Location : Singapore
Has Only GPS
Galaxy Note
Lock speed : 2 - 5 Seconds
Accuracy : 30 feet (+-10 meters) [ Consistently getting 24 - 35 feet ]
Number of satellites lock : 8 - 17 Max [But never looses connection]
Location : Singapore
Has Both GPS and Glonass
Galaxy S3
Refer above video
I expect SGS3 will be in range with Galaxy Note with accuracy of < 30 meters and instant lock to the satellites as shown in the video.
Point to note here is, just because the devices locks to more no. of satellites doesn't mean the accuracy is going to be good. I have seen it and experienced it but do not have an explanation for it.
I am very much interested in SGS3 wrt the GPS for Using SYGIC ! especially with the original Samsung car mount.

he already loaded the location with the gps on the s3
he didnt on the s2 and disable wifi when he starts
if you look at 5min, where the S3 is probably still hot starting in gmaps, after 2-3s he quits gmaps and the GPS lock icon is still blinking (= no lock), so much for "instant lock"
the S2 locks rather fast (even if most likely slower) with hot fix outdoors in similar conditions
so sure, glonass+gps is probably faster, but, the comparison video is pretty poorly made.

I agree with you. That was a bad comparison and doesn't give the S2 justice.
I took a screenshot of my S2, beeing indoors, and as you can see I got a 3 sec. fix. It varies between 3-10 seconds.
At the Galaxy S3 Presentation Show I read in the specs the s3 supports glonass too. I love glonass on my xperia play and miss it so much on my EVO 3D.

Do you have any problems with GPS-apps in Xperia?
Theoretically, with GPS and Glonass, you should get 24 satellites in view with both, 12 over the horizon with GPS and 12 with Glonass. I'm not sure if all GPS-apps are able to show 24 sats?

I own a Note and One X and the Note's GPS performance is much better than the One X's. The One X's is fine for navigation purposes, but less so for sportstracking and so forth. It's lock speed is not 2-5 seconds as you suggest (it's generally 5-10s and occasionally a little longer, which is fine, but not as good as you suggest), and neither does it never lose position.

thanks for clearing that up.
liars go to hell.
Who cares about the lock time, accuracy is more important...
I had HTC One X for 1.5 month and GPS was the best I've ever seen. I use Sportypal to track my workouts and not only it almost always showed my track on the road and not over houses, but it also was almost perfectly smooth with little zig-zagging:
SG3 though, I had only few days and first experience is not good, actually it's terrible. It was loosing connection all the time on clear day and the result - the track was all over the place:
This phone had the best GPS I've ever seen on any device, and I've had many phones. It connects under 2 seconds and finds more than 10 sattelites every time, even without a data connection. I'm very impressed by it.

how big of a role does wifi play in GPS?

I don't use wifi at all, I have unlimited internet and never need wifi, I only leave it on to improve GPS. we have glonass now, how big of a role does wifi play in fast/accurate locks?
does wifi not being connected to anything really drain that much juice?
also wondering about Bluetooth, I connect it to my car, does it use that much juice? any solutions?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using XDA
When Google drive about doing their street maps they collect data on router and WiFi info and location.
So when you connect to any WiFi and you share location with them, Both Google and your phone know your approx GPS position until GPS locks, and updates this more accurately.
Don't use BT, sorry can't give specific advice there.

I don't have my GS3 yet, but on my GN, BT uses next to nothing. Really. I can stream BT audio for hours with the screen off and use very negligible battery stores. I know, not very specific, but it's really light. Nothing like your 3G/4G radios, Display, etc... Especially if it's just connected to your car while your in it and you're not really using it.
Wifi won't give you better accuracy, maybe just improve the time of the initial lock when you start Google maps. It's more useful when you can't get good gps/glonas signal, i.e. indoors.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using XDA
I have had my GS3 since the EU launch and have used BT everyday so far and it uses so little battery it's awesome I clocked in 1 day 22 hours and 37 mins using Bluetooth - wifi - live wallpaper and full brightness the whole time.

Cell Standby?

So I just bought a 3.6 Player and I'm wondering why the majority of the battery use is by Cell Standby. For that matter, why the hell is there a toggle for airplane mode?
Sent from my beastly Galaxy S 2.
Airplane mode doesn't just switch off cell, it also disables wifi, Bluetooth, fm radio, and GPS. Concerning cell stanby, I had that problem when I used a gt-i9000 settings.apk, but I don't think it actually drains anything (at least in my case.
Sent using Tapatalk
I kinda figured, since it has almost zero battery loss when not in use. Now if only the 2.3.6 could be rooted...

Hi. Was wondering why i had Cell Standby account for 90% of my battery too. I found this thread but it's quite old, not sure if it's better to "necro" an old thread or open a new one.
Does somebody actually managed to find why a device with no cell communications does show cell standby using Battery? Is it related to some other signals (GPS, FM Radio receiver, Bluetooth)? I turn off BT and WiFi when i don't need them and my battery isn't really drained when in standby, but if there is still some small drain, i would like to know where it comes from and how i can address it.
My guess has been that there's just a flaw in the reading of battery stats and it's just throwing whatever random drain due to just time in under cell signal. There's never a lot of actual standby drain going on, no matter what it says.

[Q] GPS heat up

This is a question I've had for a long time. Whenever i use my GPS, my phone gets really hot and has a major battery drain (even with the new maps crap). Im running on cm10.1 but the s4 isnt the first phone that has had this problem for me. My DNA on stock and my fascinate on stock had the exact same issue. Can anyone explain what is going on and whether there is a fix for this?
bump
This is normal. Despite the s4 having great battery life, gps and tethering beat this battery to death. With Rapid power consumption, comes more heat. No way around it
