Does anybody notice an increase in audio quality?
I'm interested in the rumors that htc improved the s/n and Dac. i use my Evo 3d and a Cowon J3 as my PMP's and would love to use just new Evo if it has improved.
please leave the Beats™ comments/bashing silent as I'm interested in the hardware improvements
I noticed that the Audio Quality is drastically better than my EVO3D. If you had the EVO3D you would know its speaker phone was utter trash and the volume on the regular speaker when holding it to your ear was also weak as hell. Never the less I know that the Noise Cancellation is SIGNIFICANTLY better than the EVO3D as well. This helps people hear you VERY well when your in the car. My Wife and I both have EVO4GLTE and calling between us while in the car with road noise is way more audible.
Don't want to hijack this thread, but my question doesn't really need it's own thread...
Do you need to do anything to enable beats, or is it on by default? As a secondary question, do you need to be plugged in to headphones for it to be on? Thanks.
@ john
I think you need to have something plugged into the headphone jack in order for beats to work.

Beats is a built-in feature. The equalizer comes into play whenever you plug in headphones or (I believe) sync a bluetooth earpiece. It doesn't work over the phone's external speaker. It's all automatic
Yeah, you must have headphones plugged in...or some kind of external speakers. Then you can go to Android Settings and select Sound under the Phone section. In there there is an option for Sound enhancer. By default it is set to Beats, but you can select none or others (this is grayed out if nothing is plugged into the headphone jack).
the audio with headphones is way better than my og evo. more crisp and louder. not quite as good as my Zune HD with E6 mini amp
I think the external speaker and the earpiece are better than the 3D by leaps and bounds.
Sent from my EVO LTE!!
used skull candy earbuds today and its far better then my og evo. even better then my og evo with beats audio hack.
I plug it into my car's audio jack and it wounded better. I enabled and disabled the Beats and I could hear a difference. It sounded better and warmer with beats enabled.

I know I'm early to the game as not many people have this pre-launch... but for those of you who were lucky enough to get your hands on one [or if this thread persists to launch date...] :
Is it just me, or does the sound quality when streaming BT just plain awful? I can't find anywhere in the settings to adjust the EQ when on BT. I'm fearing that the sound quality was tuned specifically for the included iBeats headphones (which are pretty good so far).
I spend a lot of time commuting, and used to use my Thunderbolt as my primary music source (streaming BT to Lexus IS350, which has a great sound system)... I've spent 2 days with the Rezound, and am seriously considering going back to the TB.
Anyone having similar experience? Am I dumb and there's a setting somewhere?
well, no re:Zound here yet, but my experience using bluetooth for music just isn't as good as going through AUX.
Ive spent about $2,000 on the speakers, amps & subs in my car and tried using my TB both through AUX and BT. I found the sound quality to be noticably better with the AUX. You can get a short 3' gold tipped cable at Radio Shack for about $5 - $10.
Yeah, my wife's Bluetooth (Moto ROKR) unit does a pretty poor job of reproducing music from her phone. It's good enough for her, I guess. I have not tried the Rezound on her system yet. If I get a chance, I will let you know.
I have tried the Rezound on my Line In in my car, and the extra bass is a little annoying. I turn up the bass in my car as it is, for radio playback, CD playback, Pandora playback, etc. When I start the HTC music player, my normal bass settings add to the Beats bass amplification and things are a little over-the-top in the low end.
That's to be expected, Dan. Your car has an equalizer built in, so you're putting one eq over another. Turn beats off or use the other dolby or whatever one, then use your cars eq...or turn down your cars eq and use beats. That eq was designed for headphones, though
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
The thunderbolt has Bluetooth 2.1 and the Rezound has 3.0
Differences between them is 3.0 uses less power, transmits at a higher distance, but has lower quality. It really is meant for phone calls and not music, I'd suggest finding an FM transmitter or AUX line if your car has it. Both are really cheap and much higher quality than even the 2.1 bluetooth.
about the EQ bit, yeah... since i have the subs in back, i let them handle the low's 100%.. all the other speakers handle just the mids/highs.
oh and i remember when i went to get my head unit at a local car audio shop, i mentioned using blue tooth for music and the salesman gave me a strange look and stated that blue booth isn't geared towards music and said to stick with aux. heh
How is the audio quality on the razr with heaphones. I reaaaaaally like the phone but I currently have the revolution and its audio quality is literally poop. Anyways, its between the Razr and the Rezound and while I don't like the Rezound's response issues, Im tempted to get the rezound for the beats. Has anyone listened a great deal to music on the phone yet? Im a student and I listen from my phone a ton. Thanks!
I don't have a decent set of headphones to test this out for ya but for what it's worth the external speaker is by far the best sounding phone speaker I have ever heard. Hopefully the headphone delivery is just as good. I'll play around with the different headphones I have kicking around.
It's quite nice, and there's a few preset equalizers in sound settings to play around with.

Ill +1 you right in the face about the speaker, ive had speaker docks that dont sound as nice as the Razr, and i aint kidding
I total vouch for the audio on this phone even to the point where i tested it against the Sensation XL with beats and the beats headphones and imo the razr actually sounded better. using the same beats headphones.
The audio quality through headphones, by Pandora, was as good as any other Moto phone I've had, but the same can't be said for when I plug the phone into my car stereo/s auxiliary port while streaming pandora. It seems like the signal is weaker, and there is some software trying to compensate, which flattens the music and adds a tinny effect to the highs. This is the only real setback that I've experienced with the RAZR, and I'm hoping to get a bluetooth stereo and stream that way, if it is any better. Streaming Pandora through the Bionic in my car sounded full and amazing, I really miss it.

Beats is really not that great no reason to buy a phone...especially if you're an audiophile it's not anything special...the sound is fine on the razr especially the speaker it's loud and clear!

I've tested the audio with the headphones that came with my razr and with my beats by dre tour in ear headphones and I think the sound is sensational, I actually for the first time using a phone as my mp3 player

I've ever used my phones as MP3 players, Milestone was the best prior knowing the RAZR sound.
well, today my phone has gone into an endless boot and Im fed up with the revolution. I called verizon and they offered me an early upgrade and since Im a tad strapped for cash, I went with the bionic. Hopefully the audio quality is better than the revo.
I am very surprised to hear anyone say they enjoyed the sound from the razr, i came from an HTC incredible and the sound of the razr was very disappointing. I use pandora thru an AUX port on my deck and literally i can't listen to music on the razr, its that bad. muffled low voice sometimes i can't even hear the voice at all! Ive tried playing with the audio settings and shutting it off completely to no avail. Ive been tethering to an old 3GS iphone witch of course sounds crystal clear perfect.
I have no interest in rooting my phone since you can tether without it but im seriously contemplating it just to try and possibly fix the sound issue with beats.

I have only found the headphone audio inferior to my HP envy 15 beats computer but there is a app that installs beats audio on the razr making it equal on the amazing quality.
i use a pair of etymotic hf5's and the audio out from thr razr is not too shabby. It doesn't sound as good as my ipod video 30gb with the Wolfson dac but it sure sounds better than the audio out of my nexus. As long as you have some decent cans, it should be comparable to most handsets. If its too muffled/quiet the razr probably doesnt put out enough juice to power the drivers in your headphones so you'll need to buy an amp. Pick up a fiio e5/e6 for $30 and you should be set.m
Qualityis also subjective and depends on what headphones you have and what type of music you listen to. I damn nearly cried the first time i used my HF5'S while listening to Pavarotti because it sounded so good. If you're a serious audiophile, id suggest you invest in an ipod classic with a lod cable, a decent pocket amp and a nice pair of audio technicas, grados, sennheiser, beyerdynamics etc.

The audio quality from RAZR is very decent. Low noise, relatively good power output to drive earphones better. I am using Unique Melody Mage; quad BA drivers custom IEMs, and very satisfied.
Sound signature : It has a bit bass bump, nice mid, and a bit softer treble
Bottom line, try it with a good earphones or IEMs, for better result.
Thank you

as per title..anyone? mean to say PORTABLE.
I've stopped using gs2 to listen to music long time as the volume is too low and also finding harder to drive my headphones to full. Just only yesterday, my iriver broke and in the market for new player. Thinking whether should be better off with just getting Fiio E6.
yes, we do lack line out through usb (very hopeful that it'll be put on ICS) and the only way to connect is through headphone out which is already amplified.
impressions pls. Thanks.

volume is too low???? either your ears or s2 is done!!!!
think it's both. But yes normally I listen to a high level of volume and gs2 is the one of the lowest sounding device (ie through headphone out) i've ever owned. Not made for each other and made worst by owning couple of higher impedance headphones.
i have been using a FiiO E5 from when i had a n900, i think the volume is too low on the s2 aswell, i think you can get them for less than 20quid now, deffo worth it imo
thanks for that. I'm almost set my heart to buy one of these for later to be paired with sansa clip+ or similar. Probably will be cheaper and better than cowon's or sony x's. It's just curious what will be the effect on sound which is already amplified as HO in gs2.
Try Voodoo Louder from the Market for a 6dB increase, or the app in my sig for more than that. I use Brainwavz M3's with this app & find I only need to have volume at around 30% even in noisy environments (public transport, walking around town).
I've not found the S2 volume to be too bad, but I've used both one of the small "pop up" speakers, as well as a full blown amp, and a car headphone in socket - all absolutely fine.
you've tried Equalizer?, is in the market, is very good. regarding your original question, i use mine with logitech LB21, and it's sounds amazing.
Regards.
with Poweramp I think the sound is louder than the music original application, you can find it on the market
yes i use the E6 - it works fine and the quality is good.
Do not use any of the EQ's etc as suggested here to get it louder. The samsung internal amp can only go so loud without distorting - all u are doing with software boosts is dynamically effecting the music you are listening to. Somewhat like the radio does. It makes all of the instruments in the track as loud as each other by compressing the loudest sounds and lifting the volume of the lower ones. If you really want to get a louder performance from your phone use different headphones - that run on less ohms or use an external portable amp like any of Eii's series.
that's a very good explanation. I've also tried with low impedance headphones but still lacks the "punch". My bad as in OP I used the wrong word "loud" instead of "punch".
so what's the effect of E6 on already amplified Headphone out? just to amplify few dbs on all spectrums??
Rockbox on [email protected] and [email protected] with Voodoo [email protected] did improve the overall sound. Also maybe in that time, my ears started to adjust with the sound coming off GS2. Found similar thread here where ppl's had good experience with amplifer. Ordered Fiio E11 and will post impressions arrive.
I notice that the audio from my aux jack is significantly lower than my old evo or wife's iPhone. Is this normal or do I have a defect?
Audio IS lower
... but not horribly low.
Both the audio out of my 3.5mm jack and the audio out of the speaker are quite a bit lower than my og evo. It's not anything like a deal breaker though.
Wow and I thought it was going crazy for noticing this... I also noticed it when using a bluetooth headset. It's not A LOT lower, but it's definitely noticeable
Sent from my EVO using XDA
It appears that this only happens in 3rd party music apps. Htc's music app sound fine.
There is a noticeable difference when I'm listening to music in the car. It's not so bad when I use headphones.
Music does sound better through BT in my Prius though. I might have to pick up the HTC BT adapter for my other car.
Bluetooth streaming seemed great volume on ford sync but aux cable for my other car is considerably lower than my evo 3D was. I do notice the beats by dre makes it sounds great. I might try installing equalizer and cranking that up will prob help but prob will have to shut the beats by dre off then.
I've always noticed that the HTC phones I've had don't have very loud volumes for headphones. I use earbuds, so it's not an issue for me. Beats does make it louder, but I don't think it necessarily improves the quality of the sound.
I recall reading an article on either Engadget or Ars about what Beats actually does.
I'm experiencing the same issue. Does anyone know of an app or other fix to boost the volume, more specifically for me the volume of the speaker, because it's a little quite when I'm using the Navigation app. I remember a long time ago when I was surfing around, the was a way to over clock the speakers on the EVO 4G but I never needed it or tried it. Let me know if anyone knows anything like this for EVO LTE?
I was also having very low sound compared to my OG EVO. I installed the free equalizer app and have it maxed out(up to 4 for free app) and it does boost the sound a bit. I think you need to have it running in the background all the time which is gonna suck for battery life. If not you have to enable the equalizer every time you want to listen to something which is a pain. Anyone know of an app that will automatically start when music app, GPS etc are turned on?

One thing I had on my G2x because the output was horrifically low, there's an app called volume booster, actually a couple and it's nice because it stays off until you plug in headphones or an aux cable.
I use my auxiliary port on my receiver in my car for audio and calls and have noticed that the sound from my music app (Spotify) is just a bit lower than on my 3D. There seems to be a much bigger difference in the volume for phone calls though. It seems much lower. When I get a call while I'm listening to music, I've got to turn the volume way up in order to really hear anything. When the call ends, I've got to remember to quickly turn down the volume or my music will come back on super loud. Pretty annoying.
So.. I bought the DNA today and am severely regretting this decision.. Wondering if anyone has experienced the same issue?
I have a Jaybird BlueBuds X bluetooth headphones. Compared to a lot of others, they have an amazing sound quality.. at least they had an amazing sound quality. When they were connected to my Galaxy S3 (running CM10.1 in the interest of full disclosure), they sounded as if they were hard-wired - no distortion, no buzzing, perfect sound quality.
I paired them with my new DNA, hoping for the same audio quality (and then some, due to famed Beats Audio) and... didn't get it.
So the problem I'm running into here is that they now sound like a pair of cheap, 10$ bluetooth headphones - the sound is distorted, there is crackling noise in the background, the music sounds like as if it's 64 kbps - barely usable, very unpleasant. As soon as I pair it back to my old S3, the sound comes back to life.
I've read the forums and understand that the OTA pushed out an update with some bluetooth fix.. I have the OTA (got it that way), so my phone is already running the supposed sound fix.
Has anyone experienced same problem? Especially with higher-end BT headphones? (Jaybirds, Sennheissers etc) Really like the phone, have been an HTC fan since WinMo days, but I simply cannot tolerate this BT flaw... Does it have to do with the BT chip that DNA has, or is it the BT stack/driver on this one?
++> On a side note - sound quality over wire is great.. so this a bluetooth only issue. The issue (noise) is more pronounced on higher frequencies..
I don't have BT headphones, but do have a Sony Xplod CD deck in my wife's Honda & pairing any of my HTC phones via BT sounds so horrible. However, I did get the HTC Steroclip for my Sony Xplod CD deck without BT in my truck & it sounds great. What gives? Was wondering if it might be the same issue as with the headphones.
I am running Creative 350's with apt-x codec and they sound great. I would find a set of headphones with apt-x. You won't be disappointed.

Well, quite honestly, when i first started researching bt headphones for exercising there has not been a single pair that garnered the amount of positive reviews as the bluebuds.. plus they did sound amazing on s3. I did look for aptx - s3 uses it, but no workout headphones that had aptx had good reviews in terms of build quality etc.
I do wonder tho...
On dev.android under the about Android 4.2 JB it does mention that it got a new BT stack developed, replacing current BlueZ as well as updated low-latency audio.. maybe the new stack does indeed improve quality.
im going to flash the s3 with stock 4.1 and see how it sounds and then try a couple of variations of aosp stuff and report back..
Ps. I also found a mention of how s3 uses a2dp edr natively, whereas dna is using aptx... Its going to suck if this is truly a hardware issue...

I think Stereoclip has aptx.
So I flashed S3 back to Stock VRALF2, 4.0.x ICS, and played a couple of songs and still was getting crystal clear quality.. So it has to be the BT implementation in DNA.. Sad. Anyone has any insight into why/what could be the root cause? BT chip? DAC chip?
Thanks

Same issue. I streamed music from the same Google Music account, on both my Rezound and DNA, to the same receiver (2010 Infinity G37S).
DNA audio quality is noticeably bad. Especially in mid and high range. It sounds like very low bitrate audio, and/or very lossy compression. The Rezound audio quality over BT is nearly the same as wired.
I suspect HTC has deliberately chose to use a low bitpool value for A2DP w/ the stock Sense ROM. DNA now supports atpX. So, they gimped A2DP stream, with the goal being to sell more of their Bluetooth Stereo Clip product, that support atpX.

I have a set of jaybird freedom's myself and have had no issues with bluetooth, beats audio or audio quality. One thing i have seen though is that some roms do not handle beats over bluetooth very well. The other thing you probably should look at is to make sure that it is pairing as a stereo audio device and not a mono audio device.

DNA Sound Quality
I hope you haven't given up entirely on your DNA since your post because there are some options you can explore.
Did you try turning off "Beats Audio" in your settings? I purchased the Power Amp music player update and Power Amp and Beats Audio don't work well together. In my experience, the standard Music player that comes with your phone works best with Beats. Other music players may also have the same problem. Second question, did your problem go away with the latest update to Jelly Bean 4.2.2?
Good Luck,
