Warranty - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'd just like to clarify the warranty for the phone if you root etc.

Update : triangleaway now works with the gs3. Look at chainfires thread upon his to do so. As stated its only been tested on XXALE8 Roms . I have personally tested it to work on a XXALE8 ROM . As emphasised it is not a harmless procedure and could potentially brick your device! You've been warned.
Anyway...
Note generally the software warranty is void. Hardware usually remains intact depending on manufacturer or part that failes (e.g. OC CPU to death )
Will root only void it? Y/ N
-yes.
- no, It is possible to remove the counter and flash a stock firmware to remove root. Bear in mind this is difficult and should only be done for warranty purposes.
Will root void insurance? Y / N
No. (Check with your insurer just to be sure)
Will flashing custom recovery e.g. CWM void it? Y / N
Yes. Again revert to stock.
Will flashing a stock custom ROM void it? Y / N
Yes. The counter value will increase but can be removed
Will flashing a different source ROM (CM/Miui) void it? Y / N
Yes. (Same as above)
Will the flash counter be able to be reset? Y / N
Yes . Ceasefire has updated triangleaway to work with out devices.
Can the phone be returned to a factory state for warranty purposes? Y / N
Technically yes. I have not yet done so, but shouldn't be more difficult then removing the counter, CWM and flashing stock firmware (without root! )
Will carriers etc be aware of what you've done? Y / N
No. (Unless you tell them!)
Will you be angry if your phone becomes a useless paperweight? Y / N
You should be.
As the title states, this thread is to clarify on these points as many new users are unaware of the implications of using a custom ROM.
Feel free to write a comprehensive response and I shall include it in the OP.
(This is what I can conclude from memory and I shall try to keep it updated. I also have rooted my own device. The counter only increases in download mode )

root does not void manufacturer's hardware warranty, same for custom ROMs etc.

Oops quite right, it does for the operator though. Will change OP.
Edit :there was a case in the HOX forums where due to the relocked bootloader and custom rom they refused to fix yellow dot screen issue for free. This was going through the supplier though, and not directly to HTC

[Q] Rooting only voids warranty?

Does just rooting the phone and not flashing any custom roms void the warranty? Even if I unroot it again?
I was of the understanding that it was flashing roms that started the counter ticking in the phone?
Finally, if I root does it mean I cant keep updating via Kies?
I'm quite sure you avoid your warranty by rooting the phone because for doing that you must replace the firmware with a rooted one
Unroot and use a JIG and you'll fake your phone, 'regaining' your warranty.

There is other methods of rooting where you don't need to replace the kernal or firmware... This shouldn't void warranty as the custom counter doesn't increase, this also means there's no need for the USB jig..
Have a look at " easy root galaxy s2 " in the forum threads for instructions.
Cheers
Samsung service bulletin clearly stated custom roms and or rooting invalidate Samsung's warranty .

It really depends what country you live in, but in mine, a warranty is implicit - and while screwing around with your phone may void the warranty, it depends on what should be expected.
Given Samsung have clearly allowed ROMs to be easily flashed to devices, if you wanted to push hard enough, they would still have to honour the warranty whether you flashed a new ROM or rooted the device.
Of course if you screw up the device by doing these things, then of course, the warranty is voided - just like if you take it for a swim, or blow it up with dynamite.

[Q] Does Rooting voids warranty ?

Im currently using 2 android devices, the old one is already rooted using CWM recovery. The new one is quite costly and that's why wanted to make sure if rooting the device will void warranty?
Consider that im unrooting the device completely, before taking it to a service center.

First things first, To put it simply yes, it does void your warranty, And in this case, you are unrooting it to seem as if it was untampered with. That should do you just fine so long as there are no traces of any rooting left behind. Also with that in mind, some newer devices have built in tamper checks that may or may not be reversible. That might not be the case for your device but i figured i let that be known also.

thank you for solving my issue.
Another question, How do I make sure that traces of rooting isn't left behind?
The newest device I intend to root is Galaxy note 2, does this device comes with a built in tamper check???
The device which is already rooted is Galaxy Star Pro, it has only 1 month of warranty left, what measures should I take before handing this device to the Samsung technicians ?

[Tutorial] Install a custom recovery

Why?!
I've decided to make this short tutorial because some days ago I've tried to install a custom recovery on my old device (mini pro, sk17i)
and there were only a very few information how to do it. To save you the everlasting search I summarise my results here for you.
Requirements
- You must be on a stock rom (e.g. 4.1.B.0.587...)
- For method 1: Your phone must be rooted
Installing a custom recovery
1. Method
If you're on a stock firmware, the easiest way is to let the work be done by an app called x-Parts
Install it, run it, switch to "Installs" and let it install cwm (it's regardless of whether your bootloader is locked or not ). Switch to "Tools" and try to reboot into the recovery!
2. Method
Another possibility consists in installing a custom kernel like f.e. nobodyAtall's 2.6 kernel. Custom kernels are usually flashed as a boot.img and have a custom recovery already integrated.
I'd appreciate your feedback or recomendations, also feel free to push the thanks button if this was helpful for you!

[HELP] Does flashing official rom from other country will void warranty?

I've recently flashed a rom from other country due to the fact that Philippines does not have a lollipop version of Samsung E7. And I've actually rooted my phone, knowing that upgrading to other official rom of other country will remove the root, but my phone just got totally hard bricked in which I could not even go to recovery mode, download mode and cannot even boot to the Samsung logo (got totally stuck at black screen and vibrating for every 2 seconds). + My laptop and computer can't even recognize my phone.
1. Due to the fact that the laptop and any computer can't even recognize the phone:
1a. Would the knox would trigger if I just only rooted my phone?
1b. Would the technicians know if I just rooted my phone?
2. Would Samsung will consider my repair if I bring it back to them?
HELP PLS
HELP GUYS
Most likely not. That is something you accept when you flash your device. Your warranty is voided.

Even though flashing an official firmware of other country? Does this count as voiding the warranty?

Flashing anything not made for that that device will void your warranty. Does no one read the legally binding TOS for using devices?

I flashed the right one for my device but I guess I've skipped on something while flashing. Sorry for asking this kind of questions, I'm just new in here and new in flashing.

Custom rom install questions

So if I were to install a rom on an hdx,
Would the correct procedure be sideload the rom zip wiping dalvik/cache? Then sideloading gapps zip or whatever for apks?
Or would pushing the rom and gapps to sdcard and installing the 2 zips with twrp be alright?
Am I missing anything important? I read people talk about safestrap but oblivious as to what it is or if it matters.
I tried searching for a guide on the correct way to flash custom rom but didnt find anything.
Is there only 1 rom option these years for hdx? I only found 2 lineage options.
I read of AEX, aospextended, etc. but couldnt find them or links 404d. since those files are absent now I guess they are discontinued or deleted by their creator?
Any advice is appreciated.

Hi, flashing ROMs usually will come device specific instructions. It can depend on the generation of your device. I searched flash custom ROM on HDX and got this. I hope it helps or at least gets the ball rolling for you.

Does seem like theres directions but the directions seem to presume I know enough before hand. Lol
I dont know how to wipe data, it doesnt say much specifically.
Guess I can just go for it and see what happens.
But id rather know exactly so I know my ignorance wont end in a brick or faulty rom install.
I did read ggow say dirty flash was alright. But im not even sure what constitutes dirty flash.
Total green noob here. The only thing im not a noob at is bricking phones by modifying root files. Lol
Thanks for the quick response jonpjingleheimler. Awesome name btw.
Well if I ever figure out the proper way to do this I will write a guide with every possible specific I can muster.

a lot of us started out not knowing a dirty flash from a clean flash. I think if you are serious about installing a custom ROM it would wise to locate the stock ROM for your device first. Most if not all stock roms for amazon tablets are available for download by Amazon. This way you can at least get back to stock usually without much hassle. YouTube is also a great resource for device specific instructions and sometimes a bit easier to follow. just keep that stock rom on hand. If you get into a bootloop or other crappy situation it's usually possible to get into the stock recovery perform a factory reset or use ADB sideload to flash the stock ROM.
Good to know. Thanks for the advice. I will definitely do that.
I look forward to getting to use apps that are from more recent years that actually work alongside website development.
Its rough finding functional apps when relegated to android kitkat.
