[Q] Screen Issues and other Possible Defects? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Have any users of the I9300 (Galaxy S3) reported any issues with their screen having banding, lines, blotches, etc. such as the Galaxy Nexus or Skyrocket(i727)?
Im curious because Samsung is known for their BAD screens that they release into their phones. I have a Skyrocket and it shows multiple lines. I've also purchased a Nexus and the screen is grainy and has banding..

There's a tint issue, but nobody has checked for lines/blobs yet.

i dont understand why samsung keep releasing phones with screen issues...

Why didn't you get the Galaxy Nexus?

Price?
Availability?
Size?
Pentile display?
Any other reasons?
Or are you getting it
Have a white sgs2, considering getting the nexus when it comes out on at&t with my upgrade.
That's easy. I didn't get the Nexus because at the time I got the S2, the Galaxy Nexus didn't exist (back in May).
But I'd definitely take it over the S2. I do have some slight reservations about not having a microSD slot, but everything else about the device is just so nice...

Software keys? What are those?
.. .. .. LOL.
Anyways, those are the "Back" "Menu" and "Options" keys on the screen. They are really on the screen (in the system, software) but not outside it (hardware) and for most people it may be uncomfy

It doesn't have a microsd slot, and from what I heard only a 16gb version would be released in the UK
I don't think my music collection is particularly large, but I won't even be able to fit my music onto just 16gb.
Didn't get the Galaxy Nexus because it wasn't around when I got my SGSII, even if it was, I wouldn't have got it.
It could of been great, but alas it isn't. Before my SGSII 16GB seemed to be enough, but incidentally after loading my SGSII up, since it's a more capable phone, I've blown 16GB completely.
Software Keys? Doesn't appeal to me in the slightest, what ever you gained with the better res, is now mitigated by the keys!
No SD Card Slot? That decision was clearly made last thing on Friday.
Phil
The Nexus is too big (the SGS2 is as large as I want to go) and, by the time you've allowed for the soft keys, the available screen area is only marginally bigger than the SGS2. Also, no ability to expand the memory.
If someone offered me a straight swap of a Nexus for my Galaxy S2 I'd turn them down...
I had to make a choice of getting an SGS2 or a Galaxy Nexus for a 21st birthday present recently, and decided against the Galaxy Nexus for a few reasons:
- The main reason is that the person receiving it uses her phone's camera to the exclusion of standalone cameras for her photos. I took a look around and saw the hideously grainy photos the Galaxy Nexus produces and decided it was unacceptable.
- Another reason is the early-adopter bugs that come with any freshly released phones. Some of the bugs that unfortunately plague, like sleep of death, would be scary for someone not expecting it to experience.
- The Galaxy Nexus is also priced higher than the SGS2, given that it's newer.
- For someone not fussed with updates, having a Nexus line phone doesn't matter.
If I were getting a phone for myself however, I would get the Galaxy Nexus

I thought you meant software keys like software licenses for apps or something

Yeah, I have a white sgs2 on at&t, and a upgrade waiting to be used... I don't know if I should get the galaxy nexus when it comes or just wait until after CES...
Decisions, decisions! The nexus s is still very solid, so the galaxy nexus should expect decent life as a relevant phone.
16gb bothers me a bit, the camera a little bit too... but HD and nexus make up for that.
Who knows - hopefully something knocks my socks off soon.
For now I could choose : HTC vivid, Samsung skyrocket, or LG nitro HD. All of them are great but none are good enough to pull me away from my albino sgs2 yet
more opinions plz!!
Screw Galaxy Nexus.. Lack of SD card and crappie camera didn't do it for me. And crappie GPU also.. Galaxy S 2 blows it away.

well. the Nexus was not out when i got the SGSII
BUT, reasons that I rather keep my SGSII, (I have an unlocked euro version)
1. its got a hardware button in the middle, , not the 4 buttons like the US version and not software like the nexus, i like to turn the phone on with that button.. bummed that it's a dead thing these days in the US market and in the ICS phones.
2. My SGSII is the smaller one, and its bigger then my Captivate, but smaller then the huge Nexus, i like the size just as it is.
3. I got the 2000mha batteries, and they are awesome, to me, it does not make the phone ANY bigger!
4. If I am not mistaken, the internal hardware is the EXACT same or close enough to being the same.
5. SD Card, I do a lot of Spotify stuff, but i like keeping stuff on my phone when I can't get cell reception.
6. Let face it people, ICS will be on the SGSII pretty soon! and it will be pretty much just as fast.
the gorilla glass is nice too , but i heard the nexus is just as good just not the same.
etc. etc. etc.
ohh and I am hoping that my next phone is an LTE phone, if AT&T gets LTE,
Another of these threads...
The nexus wasnt out when i preordered my sgs2 (uk version)
The only thing i liked about nexus was screen res (screen size same when using softkeys)
Found camera better on sgs2. Ics coming. Hardware similar. Hate to lose even more hardware keys (still miss keyboard of my touch pro). Sd card expansion

Because not everyone wants to throw out 500+ euros every time a new phone comes out?
Well, I did get one. Even though I agree with most that has been said above, especially the price (expensive!!) and the fact that the camera is sub par. But, even though I was mildly impressed when I opened the box, after a few days playing with the Nexus I have to say that I don't miss my SGS2 (although I'm still not sure whether I'll sell the device). It's just so fast, something you'll notice after playing with it for a few days. Battery life is great and the screen gets better everytime I look at it. But most of all, it's just pure AOSP goodness! Of course you can root your phone and install an AOSP rom, but my experience with the HTC Desire and SGS2 is that a custom AOSP rom is just never as good as the real deal. So that's why I'm really happy I bought the Nexus.
But! The SGS2 is great, no doubt. It's just a matter of taste. I would recommend the SGS2 to just about anyone, but not the Nexus. It's just for those who want to experience pure AOSP the way google intends it. And yes, it comes with flaws. For me it's worth it, for most I'd say it isn't...
-edit- forgot, the on screen buttons are great! They are easily getting used to and it looks gorgeous.
Firstly, Galaxy Nexus was not out when i got my SGS2, ( May2011)
and i was tempted to get it when it was announced, but
Camera,(Yes pixel matters, when you bring photos on big screen),
No hardware home button( way i like to turn phone on),
Not thin and light wieght like SGS2, ( got used to thinness of phone and light wieght), Well, i like big screen thou,
and all temptation for nexus was gone, when news of ICS was confirmed for our SGS2 , and yeah , hardware is stil good, just lack of NFC, but is okey, some other better phone will come soon in 2012 summer.
a great question here is the my answer
because
1- i own s2 coming from iphone4 after the great disappointment that they did not release iphone5
2- price ! as samsung products always drops more than 35% just in a couple of weeks after release and keeps dropping more later (this is where i live; Kuwait)
3- so i think i should wait till iphone5 comes out to make a decision about buying another phone. i should stick to s2 for now.
Ide rather wait for an S3 than upgarde/downgrade to a galaxy nexus.Next year smartphones go quad core so whats the point any other phone now.

[Q] Potential New Phone

I have a G2x that I have loved for the better part of a year. I recently cracked the screen and I have been contemplating selling my phone or fixing the screen myself.
My potential new phones will probably be
Samsung Galaxy Nexus Unlocked $620
Samsung Galaxy SII i9100 Unlocked $580
Samsung Galaxy SII T-Mobile $499
I am thinking of getting this phone but since the price is pretty high, I must ask for some feedback. What do you like about the phone? Is it easy to root(for changing battery icon purposes)? How is battery life? Is this better than the Galaxy Nexus due to better camera, video codecs, or is the resolution lacking?
All your questions have already been answered. Do a search or check the general SGS2 section which is full of similar threads.

[Q] Advice buying

Planning to by one of these. Any advice for things to watch out for if I buy from retail store? Should I consider any purge similar products? Or should I even wait for something irresistible coming up in the horizon?
I already have a Galaxy S2, and I'm fairly into trying out new ROMs and kernels.
Some issues I'm aware of for s2 is about a new s2 with lower cpu power with different product code (and much less support) being silently slipped in to some markets, and also notorious dead pixel on arrival issues.
If this also has AMOLED display I suspect dead pixels are a possibility here too... has it been often reported? What's the best way to check for dead pixels in a new device?
Any thing else that I should know before making a purchase will be helpful
Thanks
You mean the I9100G? The horribad version? That's different Only available in Korea/China save up on costs.
Also no dead pixels, Just newton rings you need to be careful of, they're like the old school CRT rings you see when you come too close to the screen, and yeah, screen display turns pink
Just make sure when you get the device, it's the Non 3G as many seem to have troubles with 3G one.
Just my 2 cents
^ Thanks

Galaxy S III... hardware/software quality

There are lots of people in this forum that have had past experiences with older Samsung models so I'd like to know their prediction on the quality the SGS3 might have when it comes out (hardware and software).
I've recently tested several HTC One X phones and it's painfully obvious that the handset is not ready to be sold yet. Many units from the first batches are having serious build problems (mainly creaking and several screen issues) and software bugs are fairly common. HTC have been quick to release two OTAs but more than one month after the release date, many serious problems have no solution yet: no multitasking, bad sectors on the phone storage resulting in people losing gigs of free space, quite bad video quality, defective GPS, etc.
Should we expect something similar from the Galaxy S3 during its first weeks in stores?
I have the OG epic 4g from sprint that I got almost 2 years ago on launch day, never used a screen protector or case and never had to have it replaced.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA
I had the Galaxy SII ( i9100 and Tmobile USA version) plastic yes, solid and strongly built? Absolutely. No build quality issues, drop them a few times, NOT a single scratch, strong screens ( never used screen protectors except on the Gnexus). There's nothing to worry about but still you have to take good care of your phone.
I belive that Samsung made a hell of a job on butild and software quality.
Currently use galaxy mini and i droped him hundred of times and nothing is still works ony little scratch. And this S3 fellow is my next phone for sure.
Hardware wise expect it to scratch easil, pickup fingerprints. Software should be smooth no issue
I also have an OG Epic since close to launch day. My two years are so close to being up and I will definitely be waiting for the gs3. Like the others, my phone has been without a case or screen protector and not a scratch on it.

Should I buy Galaxy S2?

I had HTC Desire for nearly 3 years, and it is a great phone, but I think it is time to upgrade, because:
- it is annoyingly slow with my regular set of programs installed, even on fastest available roms
- it doesn't have kernel 3.0, and because of that JB roms have shortcomings
- a little bit too small screen for GPS navigation
- really crappy camera
- somewhat short battery life
Some time ago I had a chance to look at Galaxy S2 in person and it looked like a perfect phone (at least for 2 minutes I had it in my hands).
Somewhat bigger screen, more internal storage, kernel 3.0.
I use custom roms, so big development community is important for me. I have been spoiled by Desire as it (still) has a large one.
Galaxy S2 would cost me around 170-200 euro to get it.
Should I take that, or look for something else in this price range?
My requirements:
- larger screen (not necessarily much larger)
- android (duh)
- solid build quality
- large development community
- noticeably faster CPU than Desire (Dual+ core would come in handy)
- microUSB
- good/very good camera
- good battery life
- price up to 200 euro (used)
- would be nice if it had FM transmitter (not receiver) but it is not necessary
- it must by BLACK or therebout
No. Why would you buy a phone that's been out for two yrs ? Get an S3 or S4 if you want a Samsung phone.
Galaxy Nexus may fit your needs..

Because I don't care how long the phone has been out, but how well it suits my needs.
Plus, S3 and S4 are surely more expensive.
Personally, between S2, S3 and S4, I would recommend the S3. (Although it wouldn't fit the budget, unless there are some offers!)
Mainly because it is relatively newer and you can expect new Android upgrades from Samsung (at least KLP) for it. Samsung has already announced that 4.2.2 will be the last update for S2, according to samfirmware. And with so many (mainly, codeworkx) developers not showing much love for Samsung devices of late, I am sure it would take that much longer to get custom ROMs updates.
If you do decide on S2, it is a really good device!! Great build, great design etc. But I suggest you buy the OMAP variants (i9100G), as it has better support from development community. Owing mainly to TI playing nice compared to Samsung (Exynos).
Several developers are not happy with Samsung's support for Exynos devices and Samsung's lack of support for the dev community of late. For me, this is a major concern.
Why are you advising the guy to get the g variant?.There was almost a riot in your country a year ago when suppliers were giving out g variant models instead of the plain gti9100 model.
If you want then buy a Nexus 7
Nexus has a huge development community and is also in ur price range
Press thanks if helped

Why would I buy a tablet when I need a phone?
Samsung Galaxy S2 is still a powerful device even beat some newest devices (of course not high-end ones) but it's still can go well with mid-range devices.
Get S2 or S4.....I (personally) don't like the S3.The big thing is,that S4 hasn't a big developent support, since it's a new phone.Galaxy S2 has still a big support...I still see new ROMs and updates every day or week. And it is fast,no matter what people say...get the setup as in my sig...my phone was never faster.
So S2 looks interesting, but this is what I have been told about regarding its screen:
I also considered s2 but there's one serious setback to it. Namely, the screen is amoled and without pentile matrix.
What's bad about it you ask? pixels that are frequently used lose color and items that you have on screen for most time are somewhat paler than the rest of the screen, and you can see their shadow for the whole time, ppl reported that with all amoled displays and non pentile of s2 is even more susceptible to that. That happens even to devices 3 months old, depending on how heavily they are used I guess. You can google it to see for yourself, just type galaxy s2 amoled burn in. There are also few good YouTube vids showing that. Items that you usually can see are burned in status bar, soft keys from your most used app, keyboard, alarm icon and "fully charged" sign across the screen as during night charging the phone lights up when battery is full and keeps the screen on until you turn it off or unplug it/on some ROMs at least, stock including/.

Oh, if I wasn't clear: Right now I would prefer to use an S3. But if I had a fixed budget and decided on S2, I would by the G variant. -- This is what I meant.
Honestly, I thought those 'riots' were because Samsung decided to slip in the G variant very slyly. No intimation of any sort to the buyers.
I have read about the lower bechmarks on i9100G etc. Any other difference that goes against the i9100G? (Sorry that I am hijacking the thread, just wanted to know)

The g has a lot less development than the plain gti9100,unless something changed on here in the last 2 months. And the models are based on regions(supposedly).
Theres a wiki page that lists the models and explains a bit about them,so he can look at that and see what options are best for France.
I think the lte variant is the best, but maybe its for other regions of the world.

Seeing that the G has a stable CM release and the default perpetually being restricted to only nightlies, I had assumed otherwise.
Thanks!!
Meh, I am stuck.
I read around here that s2 display is horrible when compared to s3.
s3 has even cheaper feel, and is 100-170e more expensive
Sensation is useless to me.
Price of S4 is absurd...
By the way, are there some roms for S2 that allow changing software DPI? I have seen ParanoidAndroid on Desire can do that, but apart from this ROM, I haven't seen it anywhere else.

i prefer the s2 display to my brother's s3 and my friends' s4 and xperia z personally
as to dpi, yes: slim, and rootbox do, and others may that i don't know of
p.s. i love my s2, so fast, and battery lasts soooo long , however if you're paying more than 200 usd it's not worth it
