They told the carriers to f*ck off..
http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/04/...rier-launch-att-verizon-sprint-t-mobile-uscc/
Or so it appears. They're launching the same phone on all networks, US and globally, with the only variation being radios and RAM. This might actually mean timely updates, no bloatware, etc.
My god. I'm a bit stunned. I was pretty sure I was going to get a GS3, but this might make it a done deal.
Knowing Verizon though, they'll find a way to mess it up. Fingers crossed they don't..
Edit: Well, the hardware looks to be the same-- http://www.androidpolice.com/2012/06/03/exclusive-photos-this-is-the-verizon-samsung-galaxy-s-iii/
Well LTE doesn't work with quad cores so it will have to have a different processor.

2GB instead of 1GB of RAM. Another surprise.
I'm really disappointed in the GSIII in general. I had high hopes but it's nothing revolutionary. More like GSII.5

The Galaxy S series aka iPhone clone trololol. Should see all the people QQing about no quadcore . Not really impressed with the S3 to be honest. Most apps barely utilize 2 cores as is, there's not much UI difference between 1core and 2 cores. I've tested this out by forcing a core offline and dropping my speed down to 600mhz on my Nexus. Just as smooth with both cores forced online @ 1.2. It's a shame they're using the same screen on the Nexus for the S3. Gonna have a lot of people crying about pentile and vertical banding and image retention/amoled fatigue. Plus if there are going to be 5 different Nexus devices by 5 different manufacturers.. There goes the Nexus name . @ OP Verizon will **** it up. You can count on it.

Of course HTC will never be able to have the kind of clout Samsung does since there's people like you who buy into the Apple-level marketing craze. The less support the smaller manufacturers get the more you'll see Apple and Samsung resemble att and verizon.
Also, I really don't think even samsung by themselves can get past verizon the way apple does when a phone by both google and samsung can't even do that. The official update for the gnex was held up for FIVE MONTHS. If you're basing your purchase off of that then I bid you the best of luck.
Anyways, I own phones from all the manufacturers, and I don't want only two phone titans fighting it out. We already see the results of having essentially only 2 carriers and it ain't pretty. If the GS3 comes out b4 the shared data things goes into effect I'll probably buy the GS3, sell it, and save the money to see what else is in the pipeline.

Sour Grapes
I know this is an HTC phone owner's forum, but I think we have to give Samsung some props for being able to tell Verizon to **** off, either take the phone as we've designed it or don't take it and having Verizon cave, Verizon always controls the smartphones it releases with an iron fist and almost never releases phones with the same specs and layout as the other carriers.
The fact that they could do this, is a big win for any smartphone manufacturer, I'm sure a lot of us wish we had a HTC One X option, instead of them releasing the lame 4G incredible, I'm disappointed by the screen technology in the S3 but otherwise I think it looks like a great phone, it could be my next one, waiting to see what else is released before the end of the year.
As far as updates are concerned, sure Verizon will slow them down partly because their Verizon and partly because having a CDMA phone naturally slows down the process, Sprint's updates are slowed down for the same reason (maybe not to the degree of Verizon) and AT&T even though it's GSM and should be able to release updates quickly once available is just as slow as Verizon, I'm still waiting on an update for my S2 despite the fact that it's almost identical to the international version and I've been running a stable rom based on the international version for 3 months.
T-mobile is probably the best, the simple fact is that as long as carrier's control our phone updates, the updates will be slowed down by our carrier's, Verizon isn't special in that respect.
Also their's the manufacturer, everyone screams about the galaxy nexus update slowdowns on Verizon, which I'm sure are verizon's fault to some degree, but I also guarantee that google prioritizes the GSM version, because they don't need to get anyone's approval and then starts working on the verizon update, Sprint's ICS update for the nexus s was slow as well.
But I think the fact that all 4 major carrier's will have essentially the same phone will put some degree of pressure on Verizon to work to get the updates completed, and any pressure on Verizon to release updates is a good thing.
In my mind any Android manufacturer that pushes back against the carrier is a good thing for Android, HTC may not be able to do this at this moment, but if Samsung can do it and HTC keeps releasing phones that are worthy competitors to samsung phones like the One X, you may see HTC or other Android manufacturers successfully pushing back against the carrier's.
Did you guys see the drop test? I ain't getting near that phone.

maybe its cos the sdcard card and small battery ?
what else ?
People are drinking the Apple and Samsung kool-aid
Made some terrible decisions, invested heavily in audio beats. Got very complacent and gave the initiative to Samsung who took it both hands and ran with it.
Launched poor products no sd card, no removable battery latter not end of the word.
HTC one x was good but they shot themselves in the foot by not including ext sd card.
HTC will have to get a move on with htc j butterfly if they want to win back their fans from Samsung.
HTC J butterfly can turn it around for them if they sort themselves out.
I would go back to htc in a flash since their products look better then the plastic polished crap Samsung use.
btw I'm using galaxy note 2, best phone on the market, which I'm very happy with but hate the plastic crap.
Samsung and Apple both produce one core line of phone and push it across all carriers, at least for their main line phone. HTC produces custom phones and is inconsistent with there phones. They've produced top, middle and bottom tier phones which give consumers mixed feelings and not a consistent experience access the board. I think Samsung has done better at marketing to. HTC has great phones, and I believe the Chinese government will prop them up if they have to, they will bounce back.

Poor business decisions and diminishing quality control will do that
Just basing this comment on some of my own experiences. I've never owned a Samsung so I can only go from what I've read/heard.
Currently on a Rezound and prior to that was the Dinc, Droid X2, Droid 2 Global and OG Droid (no particular order) Oh and the wife's iPhone 4S. Now some of my reasons, this is by far the WORST battery I have ever had. The Dinc wasn't terrible but I did expect more.
I believe part of the reason is the overlay of Sense. I loved it when I first used it now I'm just tired of it and I'm sure others are as well. You don't get the true experience of the Android OS which is extremely noticeable with the release of ICS. Lets not forget if your running true ICS and what a little Sense flavor there are countless Widgets to download.
Pile on everything mentioned above and you have a receipe for disaster.

Typically, profits fall when a number of situations occur, all of which affect the bottom line and make investors unhappy.
1 - Fixed costs are too high relative to sales - the cost of running the business (people's salaries and benefits, office space, etc.)
2 - Sales are lower than forecasts - competitors took market share away that HTC was planning on having but didn't get (Apple, Samsung, etc.)
A way to offset high fixed costs is to move jobs to countries where labor costs are lower for salaried and hourly jobs. The trend with tech companies is to establish facilities in China near the supply base. Not only do you reduce fixed costs, but you also reduce freight costs - freight on board is reduced (the transit time for inbound materials to the manufacturing facilities is significantly reduced so money isn't tied up into materials while the materials are being shipped point to point), expediting costs aren't as much of a necessity because materials aren't traveling half way around the world if production was in North America but materials are coming from Taiwan for example... There are a lot of pluses from a corporate profit standpoint as you can see.
When sales are lower than forecasts, quarterly earnings targets are missed and investors never like to see that. Investors have a major interest in quarterly projections and in companies being able to hit their targets. Investors are very quick to leap to conclusions about a company's future when a quarterly report announces that targets have been missed. Stock prices are adversely affected and investors look at other options that can make them more money. If quarter after quarter, the story continues to be consistent, the company's Board of Directors starts to get antsy and they put major pressure on the CEO and CFO to get back on track. Many C-level executives lose their jobs because of quarterly and annual losses. Talk about pressure!
Investors want to see profits that not only meet expectation, but they also want to see smart decisions being made for long term profitability. I haven't personally followed HTC's news but I'm concerned with the recent declaration that HTC isn't doing well financially. I'll be checking out some facts this weekend so thanks for the post!

I agree with this. If HTC went to a few flagship models, and they used those hardware models for all the carriers, they could focus more on getting those smartphones right, with both hardware and software.
I know people don't want to hear this but as someone who absolutely loves Android, I still feel that apple makes a hell of a device. I would like to see HTC use the resources that are so spread out currently, and focus on making a few top tier phones that are of that same build quality as the iPhone or the couple of Android phones that came close over the years.
But I also feel that way about Android in general. I would like to see Google start to have higher standards for devices from manufacturers, and instead of making android work good on a million and one devices, make it work incredibly well on a smaller number of devices.

I wish LG didn't lock the bootloader, everyone would be all over this phone and LG would finally be recognized as a legitimate option. But until they either get their act together with software updates or unlock the bootloader, I think this phone will probably be passed over by many
Normal people don't understand or care about locked bootloaders. Hell, most don't care about software updates either. LG needs to market this phone just like the S3, One X, iPhone, and get them moving off shelves.

This is true, but it helps to have a dedicated community to eventually drive sales out in the "normal" world. Think about it: Who is the guy (or girl) in your group of friends who gives the phone advice? If your answer was "Me," you get a gold star. XDA may be a small group of users, but we can exert influence outside of this website. Samsung isn't the most popular Android OEM because their phones are far and away the best devices. Samsung has the best updates, a fairly hassle-free dev environment without locked boot loaders, and they pimp their specs. HTC and LG can match them on specs, so what are they missing?

Yeah, given the poor build quality, the sub-par radios, and their unwillingness to drop Exynos source, I'm surprised they are still in such good shape here. I saw, before I got rid of my i9300, that some heavy hitter devs were leaving because of Samsung's refusal to release the Exynos source.
Really, the formula is simple for Android domination: Build a powerful device with a great design and great materials (HTC One X w/ A15 SoC), be dev friendly (unlocked bootloader and release all source), run AOSP or have the CM or AOKP team build your ship ROMs, and update as fast as humanly possible after AOSP drops. LG is THIS close to having the formula, although they should have used the Exmor Rs BSI sensor, unlocked the bootloader, and released all of their proprietary source code.

Poor build quality? Yeah everyone says that, but I don't see it. Yes, it's plastic. All of my Samsung devices hold up just fine. Just because something has glass or metal on both sides doesn't make it better, it makes it heavier. I don't have any issues with *any* of the top tier phones when it comes to build quality.
And again, none of that is what makes the S3 a top seller. Marketing. Advertising. A decent product with decent support. That's what sells to the masses. How many people say "did you see that new commercial for the S3? Awesome"
Obviously what sells me on a phone and most XDA members is completely different.

The S3 creaks, the battery door is flimsy, and good luck finding a used S3 without scratches on the battery door or bezel. If you drop it from a normal standing height onto a hard surface, it's toast. When the iPhone is more durable than your device (The iPhone has always been built better, but not the most durable), you have issues, especially when that build is all plastic.
LG DOES need to do some advertising, and they should take a page out of the Samsung book and make fun of Samsung's last-gen hardware and flimsy build.
As for us, we can do a lot to sell phones. A vibrant developer community will draw interest.

I just sold my used S3 on XDA, it was flawless front and back. It's all in how you take care of it. I'm anal. Most people are not. As for the back plate getting scratched? Yep. I agree. It was a joke. The flimsy part? No. With the battery cover ON the phone, it felt perfectly normal to me. I never had creaking issues, or thought it felt flimsy. It's light weight plastic. I get it. I'm not defending Samsung, simply saying a lot of the "build quality" debates are personal opinion. I've seen Samsung phones take a beating for years and last no problem. Same with the iPhone. And I've also seen them both take minor drops and self destruct. Even with cases.
As for the LGOG, yeah I think it feels great. Better than the S3? Heck yeah. Much better. Do I really care? No. I'm more interested in the screen, and what's inside. Again, that's my own opinion.

I had two i9300's, and how cheap they felt bothered me. To each his own, I guess.
I like the OG screen, and just the five, or so, minutes I spent playing with it at AT&T was enough to impress me. That said, I may still go with the Nexus 4, just because the ease of modification. LTE and microSD are great upside, but I don't have LTE in my town (yet) and I can live with 16GB. I'm going to mull it over this weekend.

I'm in the same exact boat as you... The LTE and SD card would be really helpful.. especially because in San Diego we do have LTE and it's great. Plus this phone is 150$ cheaper than the 16GB N4 for AT&T users... ah god why do they make us face such decisions...
Though if this device runs so seamlessly with 4.0, I wonder what the N4 will be like once they get 4.2 all tweaked in, free of bloatware :fingers-crossed:
I agree on average though that LG and AT&T need to advertise this device more... I wonder if Samsung has AT&T by the balls still for advertising/marketing priority rights.

The thing is that, every time I call at&t store they advertise ( Get iPhone 5 when on hold) so Apple has them by the balls.

A little over the top but they could air this commercial on cable and or regular tv infomercial style.

From reports, LG didn't choose to lock the bootloader. AT&T set the requirement. Too bad AT&T is going to miss out on huge sales of this phone, as a direct result.

Though a locked bootloader is bad news for develeopers customers could really care less if anything about this. Tell the average person that the LG has its bootloader locked and they will look at you like you are from another planet.
With that said this LG phone is the best LG phone I have ever used. Still not enough to sway me away from the Note 2 though.

If they release this in the Nexus variant I found my next device. First phone besides the S4 to catch my attention all year. Hoping Motorola makes an announcement soon so I can really weigh my options.

Glad to hear it's coming to Verizon, why would they release it as a Nexus variant though?
I'm getting this the moment it comes out.

Oh yea!! Awesome!! I have $400 saved up on amazon specifically for this phone ha
That thing doesn't have an SD card right?
So my decision kinda goes down to front facing speakers, or an SD card.
Let the Exodus begin! I am so stoked about this. I have an upgrade available in August, but I will pay full price and save my unlimited data. Wahoo!

This upsets me. I just ordered an Samsung galaxy 4. But then again my last 2 HTC phones was the "best of the best and will be kept up with updates." And that never happened either

Nice, if they do a Verizon version, should be plenty of AOSP to pick from I'd hope
So I guess this won't be a true Google nexus phone but just a phone to run aosp? It is nice they are looking in to the option of giving owners a choice of os. Might be the first steps in allowing us to flash what we want in the future. Might get this phone when released.
My question is why is it Google owns moto but they still haven't released a nexus phone?

Here is how I am looking at the Nexus program. I think that people are starting to buy Nexus phones like the Iphone. A single experience across a single platform. Jelly Bean finally made Android beautiful to look at and use and now people are catching on. Samsung was part of the Nexus experience for a long time, and they made a decent market out of it. With this in mind people are seeing the Nexus verisons advertised and the skins OEM use are cartoony, bulky, and don't carry 1 or 2 of Androids core features well after release. With the Nexus program more OEM's are seeing profitability probability from having these stock phones. It also will help them develop a more precise skin in using stock they will see what people like and build features off it while maintaining stock characteristics. Skins can be good Sense started off on the right foot, but has gotten farther and farther away from adding any new functions (Cough) Iphone (Cough) it used to be the best clock, weather, and calendar but as of JB stock is just as good and with Google unifying to the Card UI its feels so consistent across the phone, and skins just subtract from that when they aren't offering anything else that isn't better than or as good as stock.
Now for us, this is great news for the dev community if it means that the Nexus Updates are indeed coming from google. As we have come to terms with HTC just doesn't release source timely and with that in mind slows us down considerably. Now if Google is handling the updates they don't need to listen to HTC they can just post the source for the Nexus variant and we can build off that (not me I mean you) . This in theory should make getting AOSP roms built much faster and much stabler overall. because Even though our devs are great and our community is great JB will never exactly be 100% there. With this though we should see quicker builds, more stable builds, and increased longevity of our device.
I am excited, this looks good for us, and HTC. I know many of us came from the DINC and we all basically had the same idea about the Rez. I love this phone, but during the time I have had it HTC just seemed to be getting worse(along with verizon) but as of late I have been impressed. They seem to be really trying and the one is a combo of great design and great hardware as they always do. So I think this may be enough to keep my HTC loyalty from straying to a galaxy far far away.
Google never had to listen to the phone makers. The problem they had was with Verizon when they told Google CDMA was closed sourced and all updates had to go through them first. Anyone who owns a Verizon galaxy nexus knows how slow updates came when compared to their gsm counterpart. Any Google phone has nothing to do with the makers of the phone when it comes to the software.
Don't even try to compare the nexus line with the iPhone. Most people buys a nexus phone because you can root and customize the phone to their liking. Also to have updates to come quickly. People buys I phones for the name and that's it. Don't compare apples to oranges.
Sent from my Infected Rezound using Tapatalk 2
Only so many users are looking to root the average end user is not looking for hacking capabilities. They are looking for an experience that is taken care of for them. Thats what the Iphone used to be, and that's what Android with Jelly Bean has become. People are moving to android for more reasons than hacking. They may be two different OS's, and two different Manufacturers but Google's nexus line is becoming mainstream now. There is no denying that. I know tons of people with Iphones that have bought a nexus 7 and really "enjoyed the interface" meaning Android is now as and more polished than the previous smartphone overlords at apple. Android is becoming a more powerful OS on its own premise than manufacturers and OEM skins.
Thats just my take though
I've been switching back/forth between iOS and Android but I've been mostly an iPhone user because of the camera quality but now that there is a Nexus available with a good (great even) camera, I've gone ahead and purchased a 6P.
Is anybody else switching from an iPhone 6S?
Mine 6P is going to arrive tomorrow, and I'm not going to sell my 6S Plus yet, but it will be interesting to compare the two phones and see if Android can lure me back...
I will not be switching, because my work related emails etc will be on iOS, but I will be using the 6P as my personal device along with the iPhone 6 as my official device. So every moment the comparisons will be obvious to me.

I wouldn't consider switching from a 6s crazy.

I was back and forth between my iPhone 6 (not S), Galaxy S6 Edge, and now my Nexus 6P. Only had the Nexus a day before I knew what I liked the most. Probably the more personal choice you need to make is Android or iOS. If you've never used Android ever before, you may be shocked how things work differently.
Actually its a very wise move!
Just keep both.

I came from a 6s.
I love how smooth iOS is but the 6s wasn't a HUGE upgrade from the iPhone 6 so I was like meh.
I wanted something different. Something new. Something cool.
This nexus is buttery smooth.

You assume too much. The lack of stringent standards for Android apps is the major Achilles Heel at the moment compared to iOS that does a better job demanding apps devs to meet very specific criteria!
Being a Nexus device doesn't give it supernatural abilities to overcome crappily coded resources hogging apps!

Plethora of Sammy user complaints common to your testimonial. More than just that, inherent flaws with their distributed versions of android.

I've been with both iOS and Android for years with both and never heard anything about the number of apps ever slowing down my phones. At one point I had over 300 on one phone and reducing it to nothing changed nothing. What "slows" Android are overlays like Touchwiz. Hence why most of us are here with Nexuses

I guess I got lucky and none of the 300+ apps were coded poorly then. I'm still waiting to find this mysterious problem.

Dude/Dudette, be crazy. Keep both for a while. If you have to choose, and you have to ask opinions, you evidently like both and it's going to be a pain either way!
Maybe mediation will help.

I don't think he was making an assumption, if you look at your tapatalk sig it says what device you're using...
Also I've never had any slow downs from a device over time except for the original Nexus 7, but that was due to some sort of poor quality flash memory or something, nothing to due with the apps.
My phone history looks like this:
AT&T Galaxy S2 i777
--Back when each carrier got it's own different Galaxy variant...jeez that's crazy to think about now, not only were the designs different, they even included different CPU's! AT&T and International had the Exynos chip, all others had the snapdragon I think.
International & AT&T Galaxy S3
--AT&T was just rolling out LTE and it wasn't in my area yet so I wanted the International variant which had more custom ROM choices & a quad core processor. Once I had LTE in my area I got the AT&T version because...LTE! Turns out the Snapdragon S4 Pro was faster than the Exynos Quad Core that was in the international version. Also this is when I started running Task650's AOKP ROM and fell in love with AOSP. Once I started using AOSP ROM's I could never go back to TouchWiz or any skin.
AT&T Galaxy Note 2
--Got it just for fun, to see what all the hype was about. Had to keep TouchWiz to use the S-Pen and keep it from being just a Galaxy S3 with a big ass screen.
AT&T Galaxy S4
--I got lucky and got it right around release. This was the last Galaxy device that was released on AT&T that had a workaround to get the bootloader unlocked, and that was only for the first few months. The LokiDoki exploit as it was called was patched very quickly by AT&T and/or Samsung. So only Galaxy S4's that came out of the box with one of the earlier builds could work around the bootloader. Also there were a ton more ROM's available because Google also introduced the Google Play Edition so we finally had official Android without TouchWiz on a Samsung device!
LG Nexus 5
--My first non-Samsung Android...Also the last time I ever switch to a Nexus from anything BUT a Nexus. This phone is magical. Almost 2 years old and this thing gets faster with every update! Haha that's actually a lie, Lollipop was not good to my Nexus 5, however I'll call that growing pains as Marshmallow runs smoother than any other device I've ever used including iPhones, iPad's. I think Marshmallow(pure Marshmallow, I can't speak for TouchWiz Marshmallow, or Sense Marshmallow, etc) is finally on iOS's level in terms of polish, smoothness, and aesthetics. Marshmallow and Material Design in my opinion actually look a lot more professional than iOS does. Material Design is also more than just being pretty, it is incredibly easy to use, and most apps are updating their UI to follow suit. Another thing to note with Marshmallow is I have yet to have an app Force Close in the month or so I've been using it, compared to it happening somewhat often in Lollipop. Kit-kat 4.4.4 was also very smooth and fast, but I was never a big fan of Holo, except for when ICS came out because anything woulda been better than the UI in Froyo & Gingerbread..
Okay, so I don't know why I just wrote all that, I started typing and couldn't stop, I was having fun remembering my Android career haha. I think the point I was trying to make was that in none of those devices did any of my phones start slowing down after any amount of time. With the exception of my Nexus 7(2012) because of the flash memory or whatever I said earlier.
I am debating getting a 6p...I've been saying no this whole time as my Nexus 5 is running better than ever, but I would like something with a bigger battery and bigger screen I think.
