Hey guys iv got a USB jig sitting my drawer, for those of you that dont know... a USB jig is used to reset the custom flash counter using hardware rather then a software mod.
My question is does anyone actually know if its safe to use the JIG on the SIII, last thing I want to do is short it out and activate the self destruction feature we have seen floating around the forum
EDIT: With further research, USB jig does not work to reset counter although does work for entering download mode.
Just use triangleaway

As per all the posts . USB jig on SGS3 does not remove the rom count only access download mode .
jje
It stopped resetting the counter on the second Gingerbread bootloader for S2.
The main feature of the Jig -reviving Softbricks - still works across all Galaxy devices, so I wouldn't throw it away anytime soon.
Unless I'm seeing things I thought I reset the counter last time with my jig. I will test next time to make sure.

US Cellular Galaxy S3 Hard Bricked
my US Cellular Galaxy S3 has recently hard bricked after attempting to install a rom called energy 2.0 when i attempted to install it said something about a boot.img i dont know if it was bad thing i dont recall and a code 7 error installation aborted.
so after it said that i just decided id keep the KitKat 4.4 rom i had and left CWM through the restart phone option. so after i hit that it turned off and never turned back on, i cant access Download Mode, Recovery Mode or anything no vibration no nada. so i recently decided to purchase a USB JIG from ebay in hopes that it will set it to download mode? however knowing that i have a US Cellular model (SCH-R830U I Believe) all of the descriptions in ebay for the JIGs say that they work for Sprint models, Verizon models and so on but nothing about them working for US Cellular models, so my question is does anyone know if it will work?, i bought it hoping it will work but i just want to know so i dont get my hopes up haha? thanks.

I recently bought a Samsung Galaxy Player 5 / S Wifi 5.0 / YP-G70 from eBay (International Version). I tried flashing a Samsung Galaxy S I9000 Gingerbread ROM to it with Odin v1.3 and now it won't even light up or turn on. I thought it might work because the device is just like the I9000 without the phone. My device even tried looking for a cellular signal when it clearly did not have the phone capabilities. Now I'm afraid that I spent all this money for nothing.
I've tried every button combination to try to enter download mode and have tried a USB jig from eBay, but since the device doesn't light up or turn on I can't tell if anything has worked aside from Odin not recognizing the device.
Please help!
Update 1:
I've tried Heimdall and that too does not recognize the device. I've also opened the device up and tried buttons combinations with and without the battery and plugging in the device to my computer. Still no success. I think it still "works" because when I plug it in to charge, the back gets warm.
Update 2:
Okay, so I've placed an order to MobileTechVideos.com for their JTAG repair service. From other posts, I've concluded that I probably messed up the bootloader. I'll see how this goes.
Update 3:
Unfortunately MTV wasn't able to repair my device so I got a refund. They'll notify me if they get one working.
Update 4:
MTV found a working solution! I just received my repaired device in the mail today and it works like brand new! XD
go to nearest service center that would be helpful for u !

Well just because the screen is BLACK does not mean that your phone is not in download mode.......i would put the phone into download mode and plug it up to odin anyway....see if goes yellow for the com port #
and if your accusing someone of blatently bricking your phone with a false file......you will be hard pressed to prove that here. i dont see ANY i7000 dev thread over here.
so just be a little more careful next time.
no i followed the links in xda that is supposed to be reputable
I used the att counter reset .zip NOT THE ROGERS NOT THE TELUS!!
And it said flash successfull.
when i reboot from cwm nothing nothing !!
and every other follow up said nothing but yay and awesome and worked perfect!
What gets me is wtf happened.
i can see it recognized when i plug into my pc and when i hold power button i can hear stuff on the pc but the screen has no response I tried to see if i could get a port to recognize by vol down and power but no com ports appear
Calm down, there is no reason to call anyone out.
You knew the risks of flashing beforehand. If your phone is recognized by the computer then it means it's not bricked. Don't just assume it's bricked. There are things called jigs, if you have done your search before freaking out.
Just saying.
Well ive also read that qhbusb dload is a bad sign meaning hardbrick
since it accepts the device as unrecognized
the screen of death so called is being described as what im dealing with on forums

Yep mine was in that state and a jig dint work, got it replaced by ATT cause they cant really figure with the phone in that state.
So just to confirm, you have blindly tried to get into download mode, you do have the samsung SGH-I717 USB Drivers installed on your machine, and ODIN does not recognize the phone? If you havent done all of that, start with the USB Drivers, then try to blindly get into DL mode via vol down+power from a hard off state. Wait for the vibrate then let go, with the drivers installed and the phone in "DL" mode Odin should recognize it. If it does you can flash back to stock with the appropriate files.
Hope that gives you a place to start.
Lojak et al: Flashing .....
YOUR PHONE IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY........
Know who made the rom/kernel etc and read carefully BEFORE flashing things..... 99.8% of the ppl in XDA are good responsible members, just have to watch out for the exception.
But, bear in mind what you do to your phone is YOUR issue not anyone's here and....... caveat emptor is the advice Everyone can only offer. Many here might be able to help you resolve, just calm down and think it through, then post logically the issues and the members will offer some ideas up.... they always do....
Why would you want to reset the counter? My understanding is that Samsung will still know whether you flashed your phone or not...

I was under the impression that as long as the counter is 0 they won't know you've flashed it. Is this wrong?
its interesting to see how worried people are when it comes to a flash counter issue if you turn your phone in to be repaired/replaced under warranty.
when you think about the thousands of phones that go in weekly for warranty claims, do you know how many techs they would have to employ to start checking all the phones binary counters?
I'm sure that if any testing at all goes on, with a warranty claimed phone, is no more than just trying to turn it on, and if it doesn't come on, then its just moved on down the return line...
Obvious signs of abuse, would probably give them a reason to take a closer look, but how many people do any of you know that have warranty claims turned down because they flashed a custom rom?
I've been on phone forums for many years, and read thousands of posts, and I can't even think of a handful of times that I read about someone getting turned down for warranty repair/replacement because of their flash counter.
Hell, Sprint even has an official "policy" on how to handle warranty issues with rooted phones.
The yellow triangle annoys me, so I will try and get rid of that when it shows up, but I don't care what my flash counter says..
Well i was flashing a few different roms to test and see which one i liked better and when i went to flash back to the stock rom, accidentally clicked on the wrong thing and it just hard bricked my sgp
It wont turn on at all. The charge logo doesn't even show up when you plug it in. I just need to know if there are any ways i can fix this.
happened to me too. the roms/file systems/procedures that are available for the 4.0 US are not infallible and can lead to a soft/hard brick.
the full restore appears to be faulty too, however it's quite possible that a working full restore might be available soon.
unfortunately, that leaves you with a well & truly dead device right now.
if you can get a warranty repair from samsung; well and good. I was able to return mine to the store and got it replaced - no questions.
to anyone else: wait for a working full restore.
I saw a video on youtube of a USB "jig" that plugs right into the player (or any samsung phone, I believe) that they claim will recover from hard bricks to download mode so you can reflash. Check around youtube or maybe here somewhere apparently its just a resistor connected to certain pins on the usb connector.
I just ordered a usb jig yesterday and when I get it ill tell you if it works. This is where i got it, its supposed to work for the galaxy player.
Its only $5.50 : usbjig (.) com Just take out the '(' and ')' in the link and it will take you to the website.
The same thing happened to me. What you need to do is instead of spending money on some device which is most likely a scam, you can just go into download recovery and flash from there. You said that you had been flashing roms before so you must have some experience with Odin or Heimdall. To get into download mode you need to power off your player, then hold the up-volume button while turning it on until a yellow triangle with a little android guy in it. Hook it up to Odin or Heimdall, by the way, I have no experience with Heimdall so I cannot really help you with that if thats what your using, and flash a different or a recovery rom to your device. May I suggest Klins Klassic R5 with SteveS custom kernel R3?

First of all, the jigs that people have made or purchased have worked in countless situations and are well documented in this forum. Scam? I don't even know where to go with that. In my case both CWM and Recovery Mode were inaccessible without the jig. For less than $5 I was able to recover my device.

Try to get into download mode. If you can't get into download or recovery then picking up a jig isn't a bad idea. I was devastated when my Galaxy Player 4.0 seemed dead in the water but the jig got it to where I could connect it to my laptop and flash a recovery kernel, rom, and fortunately, a bootloader.
This is my experience
OP, do NOT copy what I did. What happened to my device does not look in any way similar to what happened to yours. I am linking my thread SOLELY to illustrate how much information I had to cough up to assist the fine folks of XDA to guide me towards a fix. XDA is awesome. Help them so that they can help you.
When i said hard bricked, i meant that you cant do anything with it. It wont boot into recovery or download mode. But i already ordered the jig, like i said ill post on here if it works or not.
I'm running stock JB with siyah kernel on my SGS3 GT-I9300. I wanted to try out a rom from CyanogenMod but when I was flashing it through CWM, my phone froze!! Now, it's not powering on. It's not going to download mode or recovery mode. I'm scared now. I flashed the right file, I know that. But somehow, it didn't work. Any ideas?
Also, I wanna know, that if I take it to Samsung Care, will they be able to make out that my phone was rooted before? Because device status was modified & flash counter was around 12 before I hard-bricked (atleast that's what I think) my phone.
Please help me out.
P.S. I'm new here. So, move my thread to any category which you think is suitable for it. I thought it should be in this category, so I posted here.

That`s weird, did it just froze during the flashing? I can`t imagine how that could hardbrick your phone since Cyanogenmod doesn`t touch the bootloader. At least download mode should work. BTW what version of Siyah Kernel did you use?
Yeah if you can`t even access download mode then there is probably nothing you can do. You can try a USB Jig but if that`s not working too then take it to a Samsung Service Center and play dumb. Say the phone just wouldn`t come on. And if they can`t access download mode then I highly doubt that they can see if your phone is rooted.
Thanks a lot

Thanks a lot for your answer. I'm an experienced flasher and I flash roms on daily basis that's why I'm also very shocked at this.
I have a USB jig from the days when I used to have Samsung Galaxy S2, but it's not working with my S3.
Anyways,I'll take my phone to Samsung Care only I guess. :crying:
P.S. Even after changing the motherboard or something, they won't know? Cuz otherwise I'm out 40000 rupees!! (I live in India)
EDIT: I was using Siyah kernel v1.8.9.
If Samsung get it to boot then its no warranty but probable that they will put it down to SDS and just change the motherboard .

Ok that`s really weird. I suppose it`s just some hardware failure then. Of course that it happened while you flashed a ROM is very unfortunate.
If they change the whole mainboard then all information that was on the old mainboard will be gone. There is no way after they change the mainboard that they will see if you were rooted or not.
I recently hard bricked my phone after flashing CyanogenMod 10. I know that CyanogenMod doesn't even touch the bootloader but somehow I ended up with a very expensive paperweight. But luckily Samsung Care replaced the motherboard in my phone and now my phone is good as new. But that doesn't mean that I'm gonna refrain from flashing or rooting. I've been rooting since 2 years now & this is the first time I've ever hard bricked the phone. But this experience really did scare me. So, to avoid it, in future, I wanna know all about hard brick. So please answer my following questions:
1) What exactly is hard brick?
2) Possible ways in which one could end up with a hard bricked phone? (Mainly SGS3)
3) Possible ways of recovery from hard brick?
Thanks a lot in advance. I want this thread to be a complete source of information to anyone who is new to flashing & needs DO's & DONT's of flashing properly.

1: You hardbricked your phone if you can't power it on at all. That means no Recovery and no Download mode. No lifesign at all.
A softbrick on the other hand is the situation that your phone powers up but stucks at a certain point and you can`t boot it up to the OS. However Recovery and/or Download Mode is still accessible, so you can flash a ROM, which usually solves the problem.
2: If you screw up the Bootloader. How can you screw up the bootloader? If you flash the bootloader through Odin there is always the chance that during the flash process your OS crashes or you by accident disconnect the USB cable. Although I heard cases where people hardbricked their phones during flashing a ROM through CWM (like in your case). This however doesn't make sense because like you already said most ROMs don't touch the Bootloader, so even if something happens during the flashing process, you should still be able to get at least to Download Mode. So with cases like that I assume that it is a hardware failure of some sort.
3: If you screwed up the bootloader then you can bring your phone back to life by using JTag. There are people who do this for a little money, so if you don't have warranty anymore, this is the way to go because it's a lot cheaper than replacing the mainboard.
Thanks a lot
Thanks for such an informative reply. Really appreciate it.

I know the symptoms. But what exactly is a hard brick? Hardware is burned out? Software isn't able to communicate with hardware? Like, what happens exactly inside the phone?

How can one screw up during bootloader update/flash? The process takes like 5 seconds!!
Plus Samsung Galaxy S3 GT-I9300 doesn't allow flashing of any other device's bootloader.(Yeah yeah, I was about to flash GT-I9305's bootloader on mine by mistake!) Odin stops automatically during flashing. I don't know whether it is a security feature by phone or odin but whatever it is, it ROCKS!

The Bootloader is the first thing that is loaded when you power up your phone. If you screw up the bootloader your phone won`t boot up at all. This is caused by the user of the phone, that`s why people say: "Your hardbricked your device".
If your hardware fails to function properly because of whatever reason then it`s not a hardbrick but simply a hardware failure. It is in most cases not caused by the user (except if someone would be dumb enough to overclock CPU/GPU to a ridiculous high level)

Look at the XDA Q&A Threads. There are several cases a day where people have problems flashing something on their phones because Odin fails for some reason. That`s why I would use Odin only when it`s really necessary. When I had my first Smartphone (Samsung Wave) I flashed a lot of stuff on it and one time the flash tool just reported an error and that`s it (bootloader was screwed). I don't know why it failed until this day. So flash a bootloader only if it`s absolutely necessary because this is the most dangerous thing that you can do to your device.
I hard bricked my phone by rushing to install a new ROM before i had to leave for work. Later when I retraced my steps I realized that I made a stupid and critical mistake. I installed a ROM for a Galaxy S2 onto my Galaxy S3.
The installation appeared to be going smoothly. When it was complete I pressed the "reboot now" button. My phone turned off and never turned back on.
Now the phone has no signs of life. No Power, No Recovery, No download mode, No drivers when I plug it into a computer USB port. The computer does recognize that some kind of USB device is connected to it though. Which is what makes me believe that the phone is not dead and must be repairable.
I've done research and it appears that there are 3 options. (Please let me know if there are more)
Option #1: Pay someone to perform a JTAG repair service.
Option #2: Attempt to boot into recovery using a JIG.
Option #3: Play dumb and return my phone under warranty.
Questions
Option #1: is there a kit you can buy to perform this JTAG repair yourself? I will be more careful in the future but I don't want to be helpless if this ever happens again.
Option #2: I find conflicting advice here. Will this help my phone? eBay sellers warn that a JIG will not help a phone boot into download mode if it doesn't even power on at all. Has anyone attempted this with a phone in the same condition as mine? if so, what was the outcome?
Option #3: The easy way out . But also the defeated unhonest route I would rather avoid. It seems that most people reporting a phone in this condition never explain how they fixed their phone. What do they do?
My phone is still under warranty. Will they be able to detect that I caused the malfunction if I tell a lie that this just happened one day after charging the phone over night?
What do people do when their warranty has expired?
Please let me know how you handled this?
I hope this at least helps someone prevent what I did. Take your time!
I look forward to any advice

That may work but it depends upon the actual problem .

Dirt Cheapo always worth a try .

It will be either rejected for warranty or repaired .

YES use GOOGLE search .

helpless is a simple fact of reading the faqs and guides after its broken .
