So, it's been about 8 months since I rooted my phone and I'm startin to want to learn more...
I rooted my phone and installed xtrSENSE4.0.6.1 ROM and I've spent the past 14 hours today, reading here and androidforums seein what options I've got now. I'm debating upgrading to the newer xtrSENSE...but I'd like to learn to customize/theme everything as much as possible, so I'm not sure if that's the right option for me?
I'm looking for some direction on things, what ROM would you guys recommend moving to, I LOVE my current ones performance.
My only internet access is through my phone, I'm using wireless teather to type this now, so errors are no option for me, saddly.
I only use the basics of my phone, calls, text/mms, camera, internet, youtube, music player so less is more for me...out of the 7 screens, I barely qualify for using 3, I play most of the Storm8 games, but other than that, don't use much of the stock apps and would like to rid of as many as possible...if possible
I see now, that we've got an option for an improved boot without trackball required, which sounds like something that I should install, just as a precautionary to be on the safe side of things...
I've been reading the "How to theme" threads but I get kinda lost, even in the super noob easy ones...I'm feeling lost as to what I should do, I need step by step with visual...I feel re tarded!
i have become quite fond of the cm7 roms. they run fast and smooth. they all (i think, i know tazz and shed) have wireless tether working. you will lose sense with any cm7 though. themeing in cm7 is made especially easy in cm7 through t-mobiles theme engine. all you do is download and install a theme from the market, run the tmobile theme program, select the theme, and reboot. if you decide to go with a different rom, most themes are through metamorph which there should be several threads on. the froyo roims are also very stable. however, tazz's froyo with sense is the most complete sense on 2.2 and it is missing the camera and bluetooth audio. i saw you use the camera and so 2.2 sense may not be an option for you. it does have wireless tether though. if you like sense then a 2.1 like xtrsense is the way to go. the themes section should have all the information you need to get you up and theming. the only caution is to make sure the theme you select/apply is designed for your rom. amon ra recovery is usually the best way to go especially if you do not routinely check md5sums. the trackball usually starts to scroll left before failing, so unless you have that issue already, you probably do not need the trackballless recovery. however, as you suggested it is often better to be safe now then sorry later, i would pick an amon ra needing trackball over a clockwork without trackball since amon ra checks file integrity before flashing to try to avoid bricking you phone.
Thanks for the insight, yeah, I'm runnin xtrSENSE right now, it's what I flashed 8 months ago and have left it, there's a new version now, I started thinking though, maybe I should try somethin else, and something that I can theme.
I'm a minimalist which is why I was thinking maybe a NON-SENSE might be better suited for me. From what I understand, the SENSE ROMs are harder to theme and the CyanogenMod ROMs are probably going to be more what I'm looking for, since they're suppose to be easier to theme?
I'm kinda lookin for opinions and basics of things to get started learning some more customization skills. I'm also a windows guy and am lacking knowledge in MAC and Linux, which is seemingly where Andriod is based.

Vanilla ROMs and CM ROMs are definately easier to theme than Sense ROMs. Here's a good thread you can look through if you want to learn more. This is where I learned a lot.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=916814
Also all the devs here are very helpful and will always help in any way they can.

Yeah, I've been spendin most of my time reading that thread and the threads linked in there, there's a lot to read!
What's a good day to day, stable Vanilla or CM ROM? Are those all AOSP? or just the CM's? Maybe I'll just have to flash'em until I find one I like, then go from there with learning Themeing
if you are looking for a cm7 rom, i am currently using gingershedbread 1.6 although i have also used tazz's and it works equally as well. i had been using froyoshedyo previously as it is a very stable 2.3 cm6.2.
I personally run gsb 1.6 an i really like it...but before that i ran nonsensikal black and blue

I'm running tazz blackened gingerbread now coming from his cm7 v6. Both are running great. The best thing to do though is try a few and see what you like best and what runs nest on your phone.

I've downloaded both tenzomonks Vanilla 2.0.4. and Worksheds GSBv1.6 I'll have to check each of'em out Was gonna DL Tazz Froyos GB too and compare the three.
As for icons and what not, I know there's packages and theme zips you can download and pull images/icons and things from those, but can you pull from ROM's themselves? Without installing to the phone?

Yes. Just open the zip and go through and find what you want. A lot of the icon's could be located within apk files which can be opened with 7zip or winrar. If they are theme icons then they might be located elsewhere. Just browse around until you find what you want lol That's what I did.
Well...I've got fewer than 10 posts so I'm stuck postin this question here rather than in the Vanilla ROM thread...
I flashed the Vanilla 2.0.4. ROM succesfully to my phone, but when doing a wipe, the Wipe SD:ext partition failed, I tried twice, failed both times, proceeded to install the ROM and everything went fine, I'm just wondering if that's going to cause any problems in the future?
I'm also wondering if I can totally format my SDcard and have a fresh phone, I've got everything backed up on the computer so I wouldn't think it'd be a big deal if an error occured, I could just put everything back on via backup on computer, right? Mabye, delete one at a time on the sd? Just would like to clean up a bit

i'm not to familiar with tenzomonk's rom. most roms do not require you to wipe the sd card unless you need to change the partitions on it. however, i am not sure why your wipe of the sd card failed. if you are running windows, you can boot to recovery, mount sd card in recovery (very easy if you are running amons), when it shows up in your drive list, right click and format. then copy your flashable rom file to your sd card, unmount, rewipe data, reflash.

Did you put an ext2 or ext3 partition on to your SD card? In other words, your SD card is normally a single FAT32 partition. Amon's Recovery gives you the option to create an ext2 partition and a swap partition - generally for apps2sd on 2.1 ROMs for the Eris - and also a way to convert that ext2 partition to ext3.
Wipe:ext will wipe an ext2 or ext3 partition on your SD card if you have one. It will not wipe the normal FAT32 partition on the SD card.
If you did not create an ext2 or ext3 partition on your SD card, then wipe:ext does nothing.
Yeah, I've never done anything to the SD so I'm assuming it's FAT32 and that's why it failed then, thanks, now I know why.
I've been trying to change the keyboard on this ROM with no luck, in the Vanilla ROM thread, there's a link to an HTC_IME.apk for the sense style keyboard, but when I installed those, nothing happend, I followed all instructions for setting up, using EStrong to install, then switching from android keyboard to multi-touch and the first install, the milti-touch wouldn't pop up, then I uninstalled/reinstalled and it "works" but the only difference between the two is the background color, milti is grey, droid is black...
I've got a few other things I'm wanting to change but I can't post in the Vanilla thread yet so I thank you guys for all your support and suggestions in this thread thus far
One other thing now too, I forgot to mention, I've only messed with this keyboard change and I've installed Dolphin browser, and it pops up saying storage space is low, yet under phone storage sdcard, it says available space is 6.17gb out of 7.39gb and phone storage is 139mb

This is a nifty keyboard solution i found. It is an online kitchen that lets you make your own custom keyboard. As far as i know, it would work with your ROM. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=654179 . I have personally used it and found it to be quite user friendly, easy to use, and free. I used it on KaosFroyo v32 FYI.

Does it give you the "low space" notification in the status bar? If so, when you go to menu->settings->storage "internal storage" What is listed as your available space? Is that where you see the 139mb free? Could be a rom issue? With GingerShedBreaad 1.7 and about 50 apps installed, I have 67mb free and never get the status bar "low space" notification.

Ok I am not a nooby to rooting and have done it on many devices.
I will say this though I have never seen so many different ways to root one device.
So far I like the sd card root method. But any way here are my questions.
1. what is the best way to Root? Possibly the Sd card way?
2. How Do I repartition the Nook To be able to Utilize the 13Gb of space on it
3.Is there a way to sideload the Android Market (Google Play)?
4. How do you put on CWM
5. What is the most stable Rom that gets rid of bloatware and feels the most like Gingerbread. If its CM7 which version.
If you want you can just point me to Thread links. I am not afraid to read or anything. Its just that there seem to be 7 ways to everything I just asked about and its a little confusing to know which direction to go.
So any help would be appreciated. Thanks so much.
1. The SD card way definitely.
2. Easiest thing to do is take it to B&N and have them do it. You can do it yourself though with this thread.
3. If you only root, the sd card way of rooting will automatically add the play store.
4. Indirect has an app here that will allow you to flash CWM or the stock recovery (the latter option is good for if you ever need to return the device to stock conditions). Simple and easy. This app is actually included with the sdcard root method (it'll be on the sdcard after you burn the image to the sdcard). So once you are in the B&N OS with root access, you'll be able to use a file manager to find the apk for this app, install it and then flash CWM.
5. CM7 Final is the basis for the other CM7 roms. CM9 is cool too though, albeit hardware acceleration does not work yet so things like Netflix and higher end games do not work. I've also listed all current roms that are out for the nook tablet here.
It sounds like you have a decent idea of what you're doing and possibly some experience with Android so you know the drill. Read thoroughly and follow directions to the T and you will be fine. Good luck.

Holy cow your awesome!! Thank you soooo much. Have y'all considered stickying those threads? You guys have alot of information here. One more thing. If I am understanding you correctly your saying that if I use the sd card root method, it automatically puts on google play? That would be awesome if it does.
Again thanks a million.

Actually looking at the list of apps that is included with the root script, it doesn't seem the play store is listed. Regardless, its trivial to add.
And if you decide to go custom rom, its as simple as flashing gapps after you flash the rom.
---------- Post added at 02:57 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:55 PM ----------
Google mandates that the play store and other google apps cannot be included with roms. However, you can fetch google apps from here and flash them after flashing an AOSP rom like CM7 or CM9. Just make sure you flash the right ones (i.e. cyanogenmod 7 package for CM7).

is there any pitfalls if you partition the drive where you have all 13 gigs available to you and none for the B&N section of the tablet?
I called B&N and they said if they partition it they do about half and half and will not give you access to the whole Hard Drive. Boo!!
Basically, if you opt for more "media storage" then you forfeit space for /userdata which is app install storage.
This step:
Give a value between 11.6 and 13.6 that will leave you with>> 11.6GB: 4GB for /userdata | 13.6: 2GB for /userdata
Click to collapse
Basically portrays the min/max potential here. If you opt for 11.6 "media" storage, then you will be left with 4GB for app installation. If you opt for the max, 13.6GB, then you will be left with 2GB app installation.
You could always redo it as well I believe.

Check out this post for changes that can be made to the build.prop file: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=23487384
I thought these changes were made to the rom but maybe not. If these lines in your build.prop file are different, change them to look how they're shown in this post and you should be able to mount the internal media storage and your sdcard.
Note that if you decide to try cm9, there is no support yet for mounting the internal media on a computer.

I was able to complete item#1(sd card root method), without a hitch. It looks like the only place to flash cwm (item#4) is internal mem. Is there a way to flash to an sd card, so I can choose to pull out sd and boot to stock rom if I wanted to? Thanks
...or maybe I can already boot to CWM from this sd boot, but I'm just not doing it yet(don't know how)?

Edit:Made a new thread, seems i had more questions than i thought...
Just a quick question don't wanna make a new thread for this:
What i want to do is extend my media drive for my own books and videos and also id like to Root via the sd card method as mentioned in the 2nd post here.
I'm wondering in which order to do it all though.
1. should i get adb tools working first doing the first part only in this video (as instructed in this thread i think?)and then use the CWM included in the sd-card method?
Or
2. Start with the sd card method and then install adb tools and extend my media partition?
Also do i need to worry about the Tools part which is the 3rd thing you need for extending your partition, unless something goes wrong?
hey guys
i have yesterday in fact got cwm on my sgp 5.0

and also i cannot connect my sgp to my computer as windows 7 comes up with usb device not recognized
please help a brother out thanks all
P.S i have all the kernal files and roms that i have loaded onto my sgp if needed
I suspect you've got a few full (i.e. from CWM) backups stored on the internal drive. THose suckers take at LEAST 1 gig for each backup point.
Also, you might try deleting the actual rom image files from your device, since they're not needed after flashing.
Finally, try searching the app store for a disk usage analyzer to help you track down the bloat. There are a few decent free ones out there.
Ohk thanks for the hand with this

i had a similar issue..my actual sd card that i could take in and out was labeled as "internal" and viceversa. so to get into my actual cd card i would have to go into the "internalsd" folder instead of the external..so try that, maybe yours got switched. im sure your 16gs is still at least half way empty. i dont remember what i did to reverse this affect but i think it just fixed it on its own i cant remember.

You flashed ICS Crumble, which is AOKP based. I'm thinking you're suffering from a known code issue that switches the storage locations on your device. So, in a file explorer you'll notice that what was "external" on stock ROM is now registered as "internal", and what was registered as "internal" on stock ROM is now listed as "external" on ICS ROMs.
I attached a patch for it here. It's a patch that you flash in recovery. So, put it in an easily navigable directory.
By the way, not sure if you know, or not, but ICS Crumble is a really old ROM and Reuben is not developing it any more. If you want something more recent, I recommend Supermaster34's CM9 or Remics-UX (Samsung touchwiz look-alike). Also, we have some amazing devs in this forum that are working on a kernel 3.x and Jelly Bean build for our device (5.0). That could hit beta stage in the near future.
thanks higg
thanks man it worked
i would buy you beer right now
anyway so you say theres new roms out?
well im currently running cwm5 and im unsure of how to upgrade it to 9
do i do it the same as the storage swap zip?
if you can get the correct file for my tablet i would owe you even more
and once again thank you soo much you rock!!!
I'm glad that I could help. I gotta give credit where it's due. The patch I attached is something Reuben, the developer of ICS Crumble, added to patch the storage issue. I keep a copy of the patch handy for those who need it.
CWM refers to ClockWorkMod. CWM is just another name for recovery mode where you flashed that patch. CM9 refers to Cyanogenmod 9 which is a modified build of Google's open-source Ice Cream Sandwich code. CM10 refers to Jelly Bean, but our developers are still working on a kernel 3.0 and a stable build for our devices. AOKP, which I mentioned earlier, is similar to CM9 with some subtle differences.
If you search the Galaxy Player's development forum with the phrase "CM9" you should see some current ROMs. Right now, a developer by the name of Supermaster34 has some awesome ICS builds for the SGP 5.0. I highly recommend his work.
As for the storage issue and patch, you'll probably have to flash that patch every time you flash a new ICS ROM. Because, when you flash a ROM, you usually need to format the system and do a data wipe. But, the only way to be 100% sure is check your directories with a file explorer after flashing a new ICS ROM. (Also, always remember to backup your current ROM before flashing a new one!)
Edit:
Here is the link for the ROM I use from Supermaster34's.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1679957
Just go to the OP (Original Post) of this thread and follow the instructions. If you look in the "extras" section, you'll see the Bluetooth patch there too. You flash the ROM and the Bluetooth patch in recovery mode. If you have a USA model, skip the step for the home button fix. Good luck.
In all of my ICS ROMs I've already swapped the memory locations around so you won't need to flash the swap storage patch. Personally I'd recommend RemICS-UX over my CM9 ROM as its got more features and I usually update it more often, but it does have a Samsung like ui so not everyone like it

Now I've noticed that all my s note stuff isn't appearing when I open the app. I've already figured out a fix for other apps such as browser downloads and such but I don't see an option to change the directory in s note. Anyone have any tricks?

I don't think you can just toss everything on your card like that because not all apps will work natively from the sd card like you used to be able to do with previous versions of Android.. You would have to run a mod to get your sd card to be set as internal and vice versa... Check out this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1772234 :good:
I haven't rooted this thing yet. I haven't seen a reason to buy this may be it. Any one have it working for the note 2?

There are several people that have it working and there is even a rom that has it built in... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2055073 but you WILL need to be rooted to pull this off. Hope that helps :good:
Thanks bro. Have to relearn the whole process again coming from a nexus lol

Hey shojus, thanks for help and the links. Can you confirm that this works on the Verizon version of the Note 2 specifically? I ask because I'm really nervous about flashing my phone too much and possibly bricking it. I'm actually very tech savvy, but this is my first jump into rooting an Android phone. Here's the basic scoop:
I need more space so I rooted my phone so I could employ a memory mod to give myself more room for apps. I first attempted using directory bind, but that didn't seem to work. It DID bind apps to my external sd, but there were several issues popping up (apps that refused to load, and more importantly the actual directory bind app was glitching). I ended up ditching that method and thought I'd look into a memory switch method, such as the one you've linked to. However, after thoroughly reading up on the idea of rooting and custom roms, etc, I'm nervous about flashing the wrong rom or patching the wrong software and killing my Note 2. I have a Verizon Note 2 that I rooted using Odin and I used Bean's rom to do so. I really like Bean's rom, but I don't mind flashing to a new rom if it means I'll be able to get more memory. I may end up just flashing to the rom you linked to that has the memory-switch built in to it, but I really do like Bean's rom, so I'd rather find a way to get the memory switch done while still running Bean's rom, if that's possible. If not, can I just jump from Bean's rom (like I currently am) into that other custom rom that has the memory-switch built in?
Thanks for the help!
I installed INFECTION 2.9.1 over my rooted ICS installation, but decided I liked the look of the ICS sense better, so I decided to restore my nandroid image of ICS. It booted up but got stuck on the screen right after the white HTC one. I flashed back to jellybean and tried a FACTORY RESET. It reboots me into RA-VIGOR with the error message "E:Invalid command argument"
I can boot back into jellybean but now it is telling me there is NO INTERNAL memory. Where did it go?
Have I killed my phone here?

No you just didnt read threads or previous quiestions...upon moving from stock to a 4.2 based rom you got the bug from memory on that...you need to switch to twrp if not on that and mount and partition your emmc and internal sd card....this has been a known bug for the longest time now....dont use Amon Ra (RA-VIGOR) as it gives bugs on rom installs for any rom really and it doesnt play nice....such as possible phone overheats, battery drain, and many random reboots even after not upping your min frequency

Yep, you are right, I did not read previous threads as I did not know there was a problem with Amon Ra when I first installed it. The Infection 2.9.1 thread recomemended using it! Anyhow, I have since got a message pop up on the screen that said something about bad memory and told me to format it. I did, and now I can see my internal storage again. It is now empty of course, but what was on it when it was factory ? Is there anywhere I could get a copy of those files from?

the files you had on it prior to formatting? no....unless you know how to use pricey data recovery software

Yep, the software that was on it before formatting. It was just whatever default files were on the phone from the factory, and I assume some of them files were to restore the phone to factory. Is there anywhere I could find those files and just copy them back to the phone?

Oh, so I don't need any of the files that were on the internal memory then? That would be good. Hey, as you seem to be very knowledgeable about all this (and i'm most definatly not , what I ultimatley would like is jellybean with the sense clock and weather . I also noticed from the infected rom that the camera did not report how many pictures could be taken with the available memory left. Is there is a rom out there can satisfy my needs? The phone is S-on BTW
Thanks for all your help so far

Yes, it is the internal 10gb that I meant. For a while it was not showing, either on the phone or in windows. After the message on the phone came up to format it (which I did) I could then see it in both windows and on the phone. I had not taken any notice of what was on it beforehand. I have only had the phone for a couple of weeks as it was given to me by a friend who was cut off from Verizon for not paying his bill !! I shoved in a TMOBILE sim from a spare phone I had and it works just fine for making calls but only Edge for data (not that it matters as I have a Optimus L9 for data)
Any info you could find would be most appreciated.

Thats cool. Hey, you mentioned there was a process to get back to stock ICS. How do I do that? This new rom I'm on keeps rebooting on me

to go back to stock you actually have to first s-off and unlock the bootloader....also 4.2 reboots furiously if you dont set things up right...try a 4.3 rom like Tachyon or Carbon Rom....on either one of those ive yet to have a randoom reboot on proper settings that i set up

I was looking at the Tachyon rom yesterday as it happens, but I read somewhere that in 4.3 they changed something with the way memory is handled? and that you can no longer select the external SD card in the camera app, only the internal memory. Is that right?

yes but to be honest....stock is the same exact way
Edit...if your looking for a good fresh fast and to have everything work but base build go with tachyon....if your looking for fully customizable everything thats fast and stable go with carbon rom or pac 4.3....also you can download and replace the stock gallery with one that does save to internal sd card which is 10gb...you can always transfer to external sd as well as to a pc
