Wifi randomly disconnecting. - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

So I've read around and decided to post a thread about this issue because I've noticed at least 5 users complaining about it. Multiple times per hour my wifi will disconnect and the phone will not detect the network. It can take up to 5 minutes for it to reconnect. I know its not my router because my Nexus and other devices have never done this. All of the Wifi settings are default. If anyone else has noticed this even once please post if you notice any trends and what you all be doing about it.

I'm browsing all the wifi complaint threads. There is one that was started asking for details on what carrier, etc, in thoughts of trying to narrow it down.
ONe fella posted there that he returned his, and the new one works great.
I'm about to try the same thing.

I was hoping to avoid that. If I ordered online would I be successful taking it to the store?

I am having the same problem, but it's sporadic. Sometimes I'll go a couple of days with no problems before it will happen again. I am stock rooted with bloat removed.

I have come to the conclusion that this is most likely just a software issue. I will not be returning mine and will wait for an OTA to see if it goes away. If that doesn't fix it then off to ATT I go.

I have this problem, but it always happens the same way.
The phone will lock up, I'll get an ANR popup for Samba Filesharing, I'll hit close, and the wifi comes back on.

I had issues at work. But not at home.
Today I told it to forget my B/G radio and to connect to the N radio. No disconnects, none..
No changes made to the phone at all..

I"m not sure hot to tell it to "use N radio". I'll explore. But first want to test to see if I still have the problem on this new phone.

[Q] Cannot enable WiFi

Hi there,
I have a T-Mobile Vibrant running CM7 stable. When I try to switch on the WiFi radio, it pauses for a moment, then just writes "error".
This also happened with the stock t-mobile ROM so it's not a CM issue.
Any ideas on what may be the problem? Do you think the actual hardware may be broken?
Cheers.
Reboot?
If that doesn't fix it then reflash
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
This happens on mine too. Wifi will take up to 30 seconds to turn on and then fail with Error. Sometimes I have to do it multiple times for it to work.
I also have messages (texts) that fail to send with full bars. Completely stock btw.

for you, sounds like you need to do an efs clear using odin. First, make a backup of your /efs contents (this will allow you to unlock your phone later and keep you IMEI). Then, odin to whatever build you want, but make sure you select the box "clear efs data". this should fix that.
As for the op, sounds like a hardware issue. You can try the clear efs data, but i doubt that will help. i'd suggest a warranty exchange.
Ive yet to do any rom flashing, ironically to prevent things like this from happening. I figure that an obvious problem such as consistant wifi failure would have been caught in Bell/Samsung testing. Would you stil recommend a reflash? Ive been on the latest froyo update ever since it came out. Maybe the upcoming gb will fix it.

i had 3 vibrants (tmo-us) that had faulty modems. it got to the point where i couldn't get anything from calls to texts (i don't have a data plan) until i restarted my phone, it would get stuck in between airplane mode on and off, and even after reboot i had usable signal for 3 minutes. it's part of hardware failure, and the best thing to do is use your warranty to get it fixed for free right now.
Thanks guys, I appreciate your help.
No vendor warranty I'm afraid -- I got the device off ebay (I knew about the issue, but thought it might be software-related).
Is this something I could get fix in a lab, you think? Or only by Samsung?

But jfd is the stock build with all the basic info needed for your phones to come back from different filesystems. There are a lot of tutorials/links around here to help you out with that though.

Basics first: just let us know if you've done all this stuff.
Simple reboot.
Reboot through recovery with wipe of cache and dalvik.
Clear cache and data of any app with which you are using GPS (e.g. Google Maps).

What is dalvik? It's not in your glossary, so I don't know what it is.
Also, I used gps status to wipe GPS cache, also nothing. The first time I did that with gps status while still on stock GB it worked for about a day, then stopped getting a lock again. I was convinced it was because of all the blaot weighing my phone down on stock, which is why I rooted, assuming that rooting would solve my problem. My GPS has worked great for me the last 18 months until about three weeks ago for no apparent reason, now I can't seem to get a lock on any or more than one satellite at a time.
And if I sound like I know what I am talking about, that's awesome, cause I am a total noob and fake'n it. You awesome devs got me this far, and I want to learn more, but first I REALLY need my GPS to work!

i would say if your gps worked for 18mo then quit, its a hardware issue...especially if you flash aokp and gps still does not work. i get instant locks with 5ft accuracy...thats on glitched aokp 37.

call them and see...if they will send u a replacement then odin to stock and ship it off.
I just called verizon and they said i could talk to tech support to do some troubleshooting, and that they would probably contact samsung. ultimately, at this point, I am outside of the one year warranty for replacement with verizon and with samsung, so I might call later when I have a ton of time to waste on the phone and after I odin back to stock, but i'm not holding my breath and am going to start searching ebay and craigslist for cheap replacement with functioning gps. Any replacement suggestions?

you could also "lose your phone" and call insurance

[Q] Could I have fried my WiFi chip somehow?

I don't know what happened. All of a sudden, my phone's WiFi functionality is totally shot.
No access points are detected, and when I try to switch WiFi on and off again, the phone locks up and reboots.
The last time I had flashed something was a week ago. I haven't even downloaded any new apps recently.
I was on jokersax's CM9 0.6.9.2 and 1.0 GHz kernel. After wiping data/cache, re-flashing joker's CM9, upgrading joker's CM9 to 0.6.9.3, and switching to faux's latest 1.0 GHz kernel, the problem persists.
Could I possibly have fried the WiFi chip on this thing somehow? It sounds crazy, but there were virtually no software changes made to the device prior to the incident.
Have you a nandroid backup of a rom with working wifi? I had same problem several times and restoring a backup with it working has always fixed mine.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA
I had the same. Mine just kept getting worse, until the phone kept rebooting at every phone call, and eventually every few minutes. Called warranty, and the said it is well documented problem and replaced both of my atrix phones. They said it was a hardware issue.

That's unfortunate. Well, at least I know I'm not an isolated case.
So after charging overnight, WiFi worked for like 5 minutes, then proceeded to cut out again and continually reboot the phone until I turned off WiFi.
I would just send it to Moto, but of course their refurb/replacement units are bootloader locked... I doubt they'll even replace an unlocked device.
Looks like I'm screwed.

I mean, the problem just started randomly; I was running that version of CM9 for a week already, so I doubt the ROM is the issue. I suppose I can try, though (if I even have a recent nandroid backup...heh)
Mine was unlocked and rooted. Just flash the latest sbf, and send it in. That returns it to locked stock.

Yeah, that's the main reason.
So it seems Wi-Fi isn't 100% toasted. After a few cycles of toggle on, toggle off, toggle on, toggle off, lockup and reboot, toggle off, toggle on, lockup and reboot, toggle on, etc., I can end up connecting to Wi-Fi. It works, but then locks up and reboots after some amount of time (5-10 minutes usually) and then it doesn't connect anymore.
I don't know how, but maybe this could be a software issue? Could some system file that governs Wi-Fi have gotten corrupted somehow by some random process? Is there some system file I should check? Maybe flash a radio? I don't know.
All I know is that I'm gonna easily blow through my 2GB cap if I don't remedy this somehow.
(EDIT: My Smart Keyboard Pro settings got randomly wiped about the same time this started happening, but I have no idea how that could relate...)
EDIT2: Well, never mind, I found the thread in the Dev forum that has a bunch of people talking about this issue. Case closed, I guess, to some extent.
I unlocked the bootloader of the new phone. So, seems to me it is the way to go. Let them send you the new phone. Had to combine a few of the unlock methods, but everything is fine.

My wife's Galaxy SII had the exact same problem. No data, can't make calls, and was stuck in Airplane mode.

It ended up being the Radio hardware was fried. Sent into Bell, who sent it to Samsung for repair. The defective component was replaced, and the phone was back to normal.

[Q] Intermittent Mobile Network Loss

Good Morning All,
I'm wondering if anyone would be able to assist me. I recently installed CM10.1 on my I777 and all was fine until this afternoon when it suddenly began losing mobile network connectivity. One minute I have full bars, the next, nothing; it happens every few seconds or so. I thought that maybe it was the rom causing issues or the modem (had UCKH7 installed at the time), so I decided to revert back to Stock ICS (the build compiled by AJ Newkirk, normal, rooted stock), but the problem still remained. I tried flashing a different modem other than the UCLE5 that comes as default in the ICS build (flashed UCKH7), but that didn't work either. Finally, I decided to use creepyncrawly's guide and revert back to stock Gingerbread but still the problem remains. At this point I'm wondering if there is anything else that can be done to get the phone fully functional again; maybe it needs to be opened or something? Getting it replaced via warranty is out of the question due to my location so if anyone has any ideas or suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated.

Another possible thing to try that has worked wonders for me is to go to recovery. Advanced. Fix Permissions. I had my signal cutting out in the middle of calls and that fixed it for me. Hope it helps.

Just to be clear, there was no physical impact to the phone, right?
Flashing new modems can make a difference, but it's pretty marginal; it won't create signal.

Nope, no impact to the device whatsoever.
FWIW, I tried swapping the rear of mine and the wife's S2's since the antenna is located at the base of the device along with the loudspeaker. I got the same problem when I did. I placed the rear of mine onto hers and her device gets full signal strength. Therefore, I have to conclude that there is something wrong with the board itself on mine. I'll probably try and see if I can get an I777 off of Ebay for parts and make the necessary changeouts. If it's too pricey, I'll just abandon it and get a new phone. Thanks all for the suggestions/assistance guys. :good:

So what you're suggesting is that there may be a remote possibility that something in CM10.1 is triggering this issue? If someone else chimes in with the same issue, then we could say for sure, but otherwise we just look like two random cases. Did you try any of the stuff I did? Maybe you might have more luck than me.

Lol... I hear you man... I think I've tried everything I can think of except throwing it against the wall or dropping it a couple feet off the ground.. lol.
Just an update.... I did some more flashing between returning it to stock rooted GB, then ICS, then I decided to flash ShoStock 3. Afterwards I put the phone to charge since the battery had run down to about 20% and when I checked back a few minutes later, it was super hot.. so hot in fact, that the phone refused to charge the battery stating that it was too hot to do so. So I unplugged it, removed the rear cover to allow it to cool down and left it alone for a while. Later on when it was much cooler, I checked it and noticed that the cell reception was no longer cutting in and out, but I was still skeptical. However, after a couple hours, as of this post, it still works as it should, even after rebooting. I plan to flash a different rom tomorrow to see if it holds out which may be kinda risky, but after what happened today, I'm confident that it will.:fingers-crossed:

Afterwards I put the phone to charge since the battery had run down to about 20% and when I checked back a few minutes later, it was super hot.. so hot in fact, that the phone refused to charge the battery stating that it was too hot to do so. So I unplugged it, removed the rear cover to allow it to cool down and left it alone for a while. Later on when it was much cooler, I checked it and noticed that the cell reception was no longer cutting in and out, but I was still skeptical. However, after a couple hours, as of this post, it still works as it should, even after rebooting. I plan to flash a different rom tomorrow to see if it holds out which may be kinda risky, but after what happened today, I'm confident that it will.:fingers-crossed:

...you've got one messed up phone.
I know right? It didn't hold out anyways and is still giving the problem, but I finally figured out after doing some serious googling, reading and part swapping that it's the board that is causing all the problems. I was thinking of ordering a replacement board I found on ebay, but it would make more sense to just put the extra and buy another s2 on auction.... They're pretty cheap now anyways.

I was using AJ Newkirk's Semi 18 and I experienced occasional loss of the cell radio - no calls or texts. A reboot would fix. I think it also happened when I used a different ICS ROM but it never happened when my S2 was stock. I'm now using ShoStock3, a JB based ROM, and haven't had any occurrence. In fact, this is the fastest and most stable ROM I've ever used.
Just wanted to chime in. My network loss is fixed now. Turns out I had a dying sim card! It fully died today overnight so I woke up with no network at all. I thought my phone ****ted out but bam! New sim card and I'm golden

Nice... glad to hear your issue is fixed!! I'm getting a GT-I9100 next week for a good deal from a friend that wants to buy a Galaxy Nexus and I've swapped phones with the wife so she'll get the one I'm buying. All she ever does is go on facebook anyways....
