I'm trying to copy a backup of my ROM to my external sdcard. The data part is about 5gb and I get an error message so I imagine that the file system can only deal with files smaller than a certain sixe - maybe 2gb.
Is this right? And is there any way round?

Well to give you the whole story, I have a copy of the rooted stock ROM on my int sdcard.
I wanted to transfer it to the external card as there was more space.
Traferring directly bewteen the two seemed to tak a very long time so I started again tranferring the ROM to the external card attached to the PC.
Much faster but then it stopped and said that the file was too large.

Is your external SD FAT32 formatted? If so, that's a filesystem limitation since it can only handle (2^32)-1 bytes (=4GB) per file.
At the time of FAT32's release, that was the capacity of a whole hard disk.
ExFat (Fat64) and NTFS do not have this issue.
I thought that the s3 couldn't read NTFS.
I'll check the format - yes it's FAT32.
How do I format it to ExFat?

Hi,
I'm getting low on space message on my hero running VillainRom 6.1. Tried rebooting, still there. I've only tried to install one or 2 apps with the message there, so not sure if thats actually been affected.
settings-->sdcard & phone storage-->internal storage shows 14.83mb
quick system info shows:
sd card storage free 2.14gb
a2sd storage 249mb free (total 457mb)
system cache 129mb free
memory 37.35mb free
there doesn't seem to be any more processes running than usual - only around 3-4.
I do have quite a lot of apps, over 100, probably closer to 200, I havent counted.
btw thanks to everyone on this site, I'm new to flashing roms but having fun learning, and my phones definitely got a new lease of life.
use the apps2sd checker to make sure its working. If it is id say increase your partition from 512 to more
Just because the app is installed on the sd card (assuming its working properly) doesn't mean the davilk cache for the app has moved. unless you move this as well (which isn't really recommended) each time you install an app system memory will still go down a little.

after that restart the phone and check your memory is should be 120mb

thanks for the suggestion
a2sd check script says its working fine, also checked via adb shell.
This is what I then did to the partition size:
I copied SD card contents (both partitions) into ubuntu.
then I put SD back into phone and repartitioned using 1gb for ext2
then I copied back SD card contents from ubuntu.
I assumed this would work, but when I booted I was getting FC all the time. Bart backup sorted it out but I am still left wondering why this method of increasing partition size didnt work??
In any case quick system info shows a2sd has more space, but still got low space message.

would you by any chance out of interest know why copying ext2 contents from sdcard as outlined above didnt work? - may have some future relevance if changing/upgrading roms.
Thanks again

this is because the ramon recovery image had been linked with ext2 with a 512mb partition and u selected 1gb. im not quite sure about that.
chnagin rom is quite simple beucase you have to is
1.backup using nandroid
2.make sure you wipe everything. (also battery and rotating settings)
3. Re partition your sdcard to hold 1 ext2 partition and last partition should be the rest in fat32
4. Flash the rom you want through "zip file from sd card"
5. Reboot.
im a newb so i dont have much knowledge but patching up problems that i had, so that i can help others.
it can be pain especailly rooting!!!
So thats how you would flash a rom, but what if you wanted to keep your a2sd apps? So you dont have to install them all over again in the new rom when you wiped everything.
I think I read somewhere that it should be possible to leave the contents of ext2 as it is, and that should carry forward to the next rom, but I havent been able to test it myself yet.
kyriakos304 said me he cant publish on this forums, so here is him post, if you wanna thank, thank him
Hey, For those who have problem with SD card.
Download mini tool partition wizard.
Put your SD card into an adaptor.
Put it into your computer’s SD slot
Open mini tool partition
Select your SD card
Right click on it
Delete it
Right click on it
Create a
Fat32 if it more than 2 GB
Fat if it less than 2 GB
You need to make it as primary.
Click ok and then apply.
Now you have to do all steps from the beginning to install the ROM.
Hope that helps.

What are the card problems?
Just to clarify, the only problems i have is in managing file integrity when the file is big. Eg the roms I downloaded and put on my sd always changes its MD5 hash after I reboot. So always unable to flash. On rare occasions it could load up.
Is this the same as formatting using windows inbuilt tool or gparted or does minitool handle things differently? Would it differ from formatting in xrecovery or in storage settings on the phone?
Clear and useful guide nonetheless thank you

Your sd is seriosly damaged, buy a new one
I think it might be the cable when the speed of transfer of the zip file gets higher than 3mb per second i'll expect a bad file.
Other stuff are working fine though so i'll stick. What's more it's a 16 gb card and I don't wanna part with it!

Hi ive done a bit of searching but was unable to find an answer i was please with...
If i want to update my CM9 to a newer version.. WIll i lose all of the data on my phone (just like reformatting all over again)
or will it just flash over the top of it and carry on as normal..? I found these instructions but they're unclear
Upgrading from earlier version of CyanogenMod 9:
- Copy CM9 ZIP to your internal SDCard
- Boot into Recovery
- Flash CM9 zip
- Reboot.
I also have an issue with my SD card corrupting everytime i flash ROM.. is this normal, or just unlucky and what are the chances of it happening on an update of the ROM?
Your answer's are appreciated

No, it will only format and replace the /system which does not include data but only the operating system itself.
Even the configuration for the OS is stored in another location, so it's really install-reboot-enjoy.

I've seen lots of people having issues with the SDcard after format. Mine survived roughly a dozen ROM flashes and it's a FAT32-formatted Class10 Samsung 32GB.
What filesystem is on your SDcard?

I will most likely format it to FAT32- it's a class 10 64gig, is there a way to format it without doing it via the phone? it won't let me format just using the phone..

Through an adapter on the computer. You'll need a non-default Application though, e.g. the HP Format Utility.
Windows, for compatibility reasons, restricts FAT32 sizes to 32GB.
Hello Everyone !
Last week i was trying different ways to mount our phone storage ( internal as well as card ). What im about to share is the result of some experiments done at that time.
This is not a guide exactly, as many of us know the steps done here, but still, i take no responsibility of any type of problem you face. Please ask for help if you need.
for more information : Read this.
When i checked my internal storage, it was 72% fragmented !!!
so i thought may be there are others who haven't formatted internal/external storage for a year or above, thus leading to heavy fragmentation.
here it is :
method 1: (also applicable for card storage)
take backup of all data and format. That should solve it !
method 2:
i recommend using 360 security app(with root access) first.
let the app scan your phone, it will find app cache, trash and user data in your phone. but first uninstall unused apps and delete some data that you don't need. you can always copy it back if you need it.
clean all, including empty folders (it will increase simplicity of your storage).
How to Mount Internal Storage as USB DRIVE :
1. Reboot into CWM
2. Connect phone to a windows PC (prefer win 7)
3. Go to "USB mass storage"
4. Select mount sd card.
5. You should see your internal mounted as removable mass storage drive.
6. Enjoy unrestricted access to your internal drive.
--------------------------------------
All right guys, i dont know much about the ssd, but if it is not necessary (even at > 50% of frag-level ), please tell me.
Thank you !

Samsung uses their own filesystem in the newer devices.
And I think Sony uses ext4. But the thing is why would we need defragmentation if it's ext4. The files aren't accessed as in windows. Of course that windows will find disk errors and that there is a need if defrag. But the way Linux works, do we really need that?
file access is not the issue. i think the way ext4 manages writes makes all the difference.
ext3/ext4 avoid fragmentation of data and the way they store data, they can easily manage new read/writes without decreasing performance.
but even ext4 gets some issues, i found after some googling that when free space is less than ~15%, ext4 does not get enough room to swap things around. that fragments the drive heavily, thus the issues.
in that case, defragmenting might do some good.

Oh yeah, on low space. Well on my U from 4GB I usually have around 2.5GB free so I guess I'm safe for now.
Btw the fragmentation usually shows losing performance when accessing libs and stuff. But that doesn't apply to us.
i had only 500mb free some time ago, so i did defrag the internal at that time(72% fragmentation), but now i have 3 gb free ! :highfive: .so its same for me ...no need !

Internal storage (/sdcard) uses FAT32 file system, the data partition uses ext4 file system.
I know that defragmenting a flash drive is useful only to cause more wear and tear.
Are you all insane? You can't defragment flash drives!
That slows it down and eventually will ruin it.

If sdcard uses fat32, then it should be defragmented....otherwise its fine...
One doubt though, internal is named sdcard too....
You mean external storage, right?

Internal storage use FAT32 filesystem, external storage use FAT/FAT32/exFAT.
Both are flash drives and shouldn't be defragmented.
That. I'm rooted with TWRP recovery, using the AOSP Extended ROM v3.2 (7.1.1 nougat).
I dont want to format my sdcard to internal, because I use it to save files and backups, and zip files to flash on an emergency.
Is there an alternative? I can't seem to find one.
It would be cool to make it think it has 2 sd cards, 1 internal and 1 external, while in real it's just one that is formatted in 2 partitions, but I don't think thats possible.
Thanks.

I'll try to dig up the link for the procedure. You need a PC, and a basic knowledge of adb.

It will nuke whatever is on your SD card. Won't touch a thing on your phone. Just follow the directions, he tells you how to confirm you're looking at the proper storage device.
AFAIK there are no negative effects beyond the normal additional read write cycles due to adoptable storage. Been using one card like this on the e (backup device, low use) for six months, and the other one for about a month now on the Z (high use daily driver). Working fine for me.

Seems legit. I have a 32gb sd (max for the Moto E surnia) and going for 25% internal (about 8gb) and 75% external (about 24gb.)
Thanks a lot!
EDIT: OK. I did it, but i forgotten to eject it, so now it's corrupted, and I can't seem to find a way to eject it to try to do it again, as when I press on the SD card, it tells me to format it. If I format it (temporarely, to then do it again) it will still say "Corrupted". EDIT2: I tried formatting it as portable and it worked, but then when I ejected with the icon next to the sd card, and then doing the commands gives the same result as before. "Portable Storage" is okay, named as "sdcard1 / vfat" but internal says "Corrupted". What do I try now?

Hmmm. Probably better off to reformat the whole card to a single fat32 partition (use a card formating tool on the pc for this) and start over. Not sure if or how to do it via adb if it's seeing one partition as corrupt.
Fwiw, 32gb is the max " officially " supported SD card size on the surnia, but it works fine with bigger cards. I'm running 64gb.
I'm going to try a solution that is on the comments of the blog post. Thanks!
EDIT: tried the solution, heres the comment:
A Bored Boy 16 September 2016 at 19:54
For anyone that is getting the corrupted error on their SD card when creating a mixed partition. Here is the solution.
After you have partitioned the disk and while your SD card is corruped enter In the terminal the following:
$> adb shell sm list-volumes all
Which will list your volumes, for example:
private mounted null
public:179,1 mounted B5B1-140C
private:179,3 unmountable null
emulated mounted null
Then enter the following replacing 179,3 with whichever disk numbers you are given:
$> adb shell sm format private:179,3
$> adb shell sm mount private:179,3
Now your SD card in device storage should be properly mounted and your portable storage will still be there.
This worked on my LG G5 and should work on the S7.
On the 2nd and 3rd step I get the following error:
▶ adb shell sm mount private:179_67
Error: java.lang.IllegalStateException: command '55 volume mount private:179_67 0 -1' failed with '400 55 Command failed'
Help?

OK. Tried formatting into FAT32 with a chromebook (only computer I had access to atm, no usb adapter :/) and it formatted. Then putted the sd on my phone, selected as portable, EJECTED and did the proccess.. no luck.
Same result. The internal partition marks as "corrupted".

Haven't used link2sd in many years. Used to require lots of manual management, but it's the same concept. 2 partitions on SD card, 2 different formats, apps on one, media etc on the other.
Give it a shot. Used to have to manually format SD card to ext2 (iirc) for the app partition.
